Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) — the vice chair of the Jan. 6 committee and one of the only Republican to openly criticize former President Donald Trump — saw her bid for reelection come to an end on Tuesday when she lost the Republican primary to represent Wyoming’s at-large district in Congress.

Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou, known to cinephiles around the world as Vangelis, has died this week at a hospital in France, his reps announced in a statement. He was 79.
Vangelis is best known for the iconic theme and soundtrack to the Best Picture-winning sports film “Chariots of Fire,” for which he won an Oscar for Best Original Score while the soundtrack reached the top of the U.S. Billboard charts. He also composed the score for Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic “Blade Runner,” for which he was nominated for a BAFTA and a Golden Globe.
Born in Athens, Greece, Vangelis got his start playing keyboards for a pop band called Forminx in the 1960s and later with the prog rock band Aphrodite’s Child, which found success on the European charts. All seven House Republicans who are seeking reelection after voting to impeach former President Donald Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol are faring well financially, campaign disclosures filed this week with the Federal Election Commission show.
The New York Times points out that despite drawing Trump’s wrath, the seven Republicans are out-raising their primary opponents. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), for instance, raised a war chest of around $6.5 million in 2021, and is entering the 2022 election year with just under $5 million, while her opponent, Harriet Hageman,...

Nearly 140 Republican members of the House of Representatives voted against certifying Joe Biden’s 2020 election win, and now a lone member of that group has come forward to say he regrets it. “In retrospect I should have voted to certify,” Rep. Tom Rice (R-s.C.) told Politico on Wednesday. “Because President Trump was responsible for the attack on the Capitol.”
Rice said that he believed the former president was responsible for the insurrection because Trump watched “with pride” as his supporters flooded the Capitol and “did nothing to stop it.

Updated, 1:36 Pm Pt: Donald Trump became the first president to be impeached twice, as the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday passed an article citing him for inciting the insurrection on the U.S. Capitol last week.
The 232-197 vote came after just two hours of debate, reflecting the urgency of House Democrats to impeach the president before his term ends. Ten Republicans joined with Democrats to impeach the president.
After House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the vote as final, members paused for a moment, then went about chatting among themselves.
All of the news networks covered the vote, and broadcast networks broke in with special reports.
Trump was charged with one article for impeachment, inciting an insurrection stemming from the riot at the Capitol.
It will be up to the Senate to hold a trial. If two-thirds vote to convict, Trump will be removed from office.

Technically hitting paydirt in the indie biz with their breakout addiction drama, we could argue that over the course of their four film filmography (television fiction and docu assignments aside) that the writing-directing tandem of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are softening their searing-like stance yet adhering to a contemplative template. Half Nelson (easily among my top ten films of ’06) was followed by Sugar (2008), dramedy It’s Kind of a Funny Story (2010) and in 2015, we can “bet” on a roadtrippin comedy to detail our need to beat the odds. Boden and Fleck are no strangers to Park City, a pair of their shorts landed there prior to their first two features. Mississippi Grind is a blue-chip indie item that originally had Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead but Ben Mendelsohn, Ryan Reynolds take the reigns alongside Analeigh Tipton, Sienna Miller, Alfre Woodard and Concussion thesp Robin Weigert. Shot in Alabama, New Orleans and Louisiana,...

About a half-dozen years have passed since John Krasinski broke out behind the camera with his 80-minuter raining men oddity. The adaptation of David Foster Wallace’s Brief Interviews with Hideous Men actually landed at Sundance’s Dramatic Competition and was followed by an uneventful theatrical run. Working from Sundance alumni James C. Strouse’s screenplay, Krasinski’s sophomore film, which was shot Mississippi in mid-July and wrapped in August, sees the actor fill the titular protagonist’s shoes. What the film has going for it is that it is supported by the likes Anna Kendrick (last year’s Park City queen was showcased in a trio of films: The Voices, Life After Beth, Happy Christmas), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (brilliant in Sundance preemed The Spectacular Now) and Richard Jenkins. Cock-eyed optimists would say that Sundance still has room for Garden State types or sentimental explorations of self where 30-something men...

Frankly, we’re a bit miffed that John Krasinski‘s next directorial effort, The Hollars, is not about an Appalachian family with issues they need to work out or a fake type of currency, but that might just be our own prejudices and personal interests shining through. Instead, the James C. Sprouse-penned screenplay centers on the fictional Hollar family. ZZzzz. Let’s maybe change that. The Hollars will see Krasinski approaching, oddly enough, both Steel Magnolias and Garden State territory. No, really, as Screen Daily reports that producer Tom Rice describes the film as “blending the emotion of Steel Magnolias with the youth-oriented relevance of Garden State,” which is either absolute brilliance or the end of Krasinski’s short-lived directorial career (we’re leaning to the former on this one, though). See? Steel Magnolias and Garden State. It’s right there. Krasinski will also star in the film as John Hollar, a...

Fox Searchlight has taken to Nat Faxon and Jim Rash’s directorial debut “The Way, Way Back,” which had its world premiere Monday at the Eccles Theatre. It may stand to be the biggest buy in recent memory, as one source puts the price just short of $10 million for North American rights and most other major territories. Searchlight plans a summer theatrical release. Starring Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Allison Janney, Sam Rockwell and Maya Rudolph, the comedy follows a 14-year-old whose summer vacation takes an odd turn when he begins to mix with the staff at a rundown water park. This is the writing-directing debut of Faxon and Rash, who won an Oscar for co-writing “The Descendants,” which Searchlight released in 2011. Kevin J. Walsh of The Walsh Company and Tom Rice of Sycamore Pictures produced. OddLot Entertainment and Sycamore Pictures co-financed the project. “Nat and Jim have crafted an uproarious...

A fan of the rare coming-of-age film genre when it actually works, so when you consider this 2007 Blacklist dramedy fell upon an ensemble sees Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Sam Rockwell, Maya Rudolph, Rob Corddry and Allison Janney then the only concern is on the rate of success Nat Faxon and Jim Rash had in translating their A grade screenplay for the big screen. The Descendants wasn’t too shabby and a Sundance berth is certainly a step in the right direction. We’ll see if they live up to what was on the page.

A top-tier 2007 Blacklist script that would end up falling back into the laps of those who penned the project, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash’s debut behind the camera was completed midway this year and if the producers choose to go the festival route with The Way Way Back it could command a huge payday with the Little Miss Sunshine reunion of Steve Carell and Toni Collette. The dramedy also includes Sam Rockwell, Amanda Peet, AnnaSophia Robb, Maya Rudolph, Rob Corddry and Allison Janney.
Gist: Over the course of his summer break, a teenager comes into his own thanks in part to the friendship he strikes up with one of the park’s managers.
Production Co./Producers: Sycamore Pictures’ Tom Rice and Doubleyou’s Kevin J. Walsh
Prediction: Premieres section but could see this wait until Tiff in the fall.
