Despite it being widely recognized as a top highlight from this year’s Academy Awards, Ryan Gosling almost didn’t give his amazing “I’m Just Ken” performance.
“During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Friday, the Barbie actor said his answer was “100 percent no” when he was first asked to perform the film’s hit song. ‘There’s a lot of ways that could go wrong,’ he explained.”

Linda Hamilton will be making an appearance in the upcoming Stranger Things, which poetically takes place in the era when she catapulted to fame thanks to The Terminator. Her defining performance as Sarah Connor sealed her in pop culture as one of the best sci-fi characters of all time. However, even though she would make a return to the series with the sequel Terminator: Dark Fate, Hamilton has definitively stated that she is no longer interested in reprising her iconic character.
The Beauty and the Beast TV show star recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to talk about her projects. It was inevitably asked if she would come back for another round with the cybernetic organism when they inquired what was more likely: an AI-written Terminator sequel or her reprising the role of Sarah Connor. Hamilton answered, “AI writing the next Terminator movie. And they kill me off before we start.

Colombian auteur Ana Maria Hermida (“The Firefly”) is directing an all-star cast in Catalyst Studios’ “Alix.”
The film introduces Cristal Aparcio (“Enfermeras”) to international audiences in the title role of Alix. Based on Hermida’s script, the film also stars Natalia Reyes (“Terminator Dark Fate”), Roberto Urbina (“Snowpiercer”), Carlos Bardem (“El Cid”) and Carolina Guerra (“Animal Kingdom”). Principal photography has begun in the jungles of Rio Claro, Colombia.
A redemptive coming-of-age tale about the discovery of inner strength and new beginnings, the film is a magic realist tale that tells the story of Conejo (Urbina), a skilled soldier, and a young girl, Alix (Aparicio), who he recruits to be a child soldier in the Colombian jungle under the command of the charismatic Ramon (Bardem). Alix, innocent and optimistic, deals with the trauma of her hard circumstances by letting her imagination journey to a magical realm.

When I was about seven or so, I attended a baton competition in Orlando, Florida that granted all of the attendees a day pass to Universal Studios. The park had recently opened the "Terminator 2: 3D: Battle Across Time" attraction, which meant the park was covered in advertisements with spine-chilling imagery of the T-1000 staring into my soul, and a handful of prominently displayed, life-size Terminators that I assume were added solely to scar me for life. We had to pass by the attraction to get to another side of the park, and I just stood frozen in my tracks. I had seen both "The Terminator" and "T2: Judgment Day" at this point, but seeing a Terminator right before my eyes immediately destroyed the safe distance provided by the movies. The damn thing looked way too real for comfort, and I totally freaked out.

Linda Hamilton with a rocket launcher. A gloopy shape-changing robot. Arnold Schwarzenegger with a cool beard. The trailer for Terminator: Dark Fate was filled with elements designed to appeal to fans of the long-running, and often lackluster, sci-fi franchise. But none were as important as a simple block of text declaring, “Producer James Cameron Returns.”
While Cameron created the franchise with the stripped-down The Terminator in 1984, and then returned with the definitive action blockbuster Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 1991, he remained hands-off for everything that followed. And everything that followed failed to live up to the standard Cameron set. Sure, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles have their defenders, but no one would argue that either entry holds a candle to the first two movies.

Some fans were excited when they heard that Terminator franchise creator James Cameron was going to be involved with the making of a new Terminator sequel after being absent from a few previous entries in the franchise. But when Terminator: Dark Fate (watch it Here) arrived in theatres back in 2019, it wasn’t met with much enthusiasm. It turned out to be another box office failure, continuing Terminator‘s three film losing streak. Speaking with Deadline, Cameron said he feels the casting was at least partly to blame for the movie’s failure, saying that having Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton in the lead roles make it look like a movie for granddads.

Where do you go after the unthinkable has happened? It's a question people in the real world have been trying to answer as they've navigated the pandemic for the past two years. It also speaks to the heart of "Station Eleven," an affecting HBO miniseries based on Emily St. John Mandel's 2014 post-apocalyptic novel of the same name.
In a plot that hits more than a little close to home after 2020, "Station Eleven" centers on a deadly flu pandemic that wipes out much of the world's population, bringing society to its knees. However, where a franchise like "The Terminator" tends to focus more on the battle to cancel the apocalypse, "Station Eleven" is much more concerned with what comes after, when those who survived have to figure out how to start living again in this strange new world.

After skyrocketing to success with “Deadpool,” director Tim Miller followed his “rock-hard nerd belief” to helm a reboot for the “Terminator” franchise with 2019’s “Terminator: Dark Fate.” While the Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring franchise installment was a labor of love for Miller, he admits that his own desires for what he wanted to see on the big screen weren’t enough to make it a hit with other audiences.
“I went in with the rock-hard nerd belief that if I made a good movie that I wanted to see, it would do well. And I was wrong,” Miller told audiences during Collider’s Directors on Directing Hall H San Diego Comic-Con panel this past weekend (via ScreenRant). “It was one of those f**king Eureka moments in a bad way, because the movie tanked.”
“Dark Fate” served as a direct sequel to “The Terminator” and “T2: Judgement Day,” both directed by James Cameron.

There are lost-at-sea thrillers that make a virtue of the leanness of their narratives. J.C. Chandor’s “All Is Lost,” Wolfgang Fischer’s “Styx” and Chris Kentis’ legitimately traumatizing “Open Water” (not to mention Alfonso Cuarón’s “Gravity” if we switch in space for ocean) all spun gripping tales of survival — or not — using minimal dialogue and very little character backstory. But the pitfalls of this less-is-more approach are laid bare in and stereotypes. In its familiarity, “Submersible” at least appropriately evokes such a sinking feeling.
We’re engulfed in the action immediately, when the film opens, as the rickety, makeshift sub codenamed “Guadalupe” is already mid-crisis. Its crew of three — secretive pseudo-captain Felix (Leynar Gómez), quiet, older engine maintenance guy Kleber (Carlos Valencia) and jittery, crazy-eyed wild card Aquiles (José Restrepo) — scrabble about the squalid, listing interior and decide in desperation to redistribute the weight on board by shifting their precious cargo around.

James Cameron’s breakout film “The Terminator” may not have been a hit in theaters, but it was such a cult favorite on home video that it spawned one of the biggest and most lucrative movie franchises in history. With “Terminator: Dark Fate” in theaters, let’s look back at all six feature films in the saga, and see how they stack up against each other.
6. “Terminator Salvation” (2009)
The fourth “Terminator” movie has a great cast — Christian Bale, Anton Yelchin, Bryce Dallas Howard, Helena Bonham Carter — and a smart idea, to give all the time-travel a rest and actually set one of these post-apocalyptic thrillers after the apocalypse for a change. Unfortunately, director McG is more interested in chaotic action than in the story, the new revelations about the universe are groan-inducing, and Sam Worthington’s forgettable protagonist, a survivor with a secret, takes valuable screen time away from everyone and everything else.

While the box office performance of 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate resulted in the franchise getting lowered into a proverbial vat of lava as it flashed a thumb-up, it seems that plans exist for a seventh entry, which would have followed up on the wantonly retconned storyline—indirectly, anyway.
Mackenzie Davis, who starred in Dark Fate as cybernetically-enhanced human Grace, divulged a rather intriguing tidbit on the Happy Sad Confused podcast about the inevitably fruitless plans for a follow-up film. The character, hailing from a timeline altered by Terminator 2’s destruction of Skynet, was sent from the future to protect the fated Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes) from a new humanity-exterminating A.I. called Legion, but was (Spoiler Alert) killed at the end of the film. Yet, Davis reveals that Grace would have returned in the next film by way of yet another alternate timeline.

You’re terminated… The stakes seem higher than ever these days, whether a Aaa action film is a success or a failure. The amount of money that needs to be pumped into these films, plus the global marketing often means that new ideas are cast aside for the more likely bet of a sequel, prequel or remake. Very quickly then the talk now turns to a “franchise” rather than a film series as, of course now we are talking about funko pops and various other plastic tat that we nerds can’t seem to resist.
On the one hand, it has meant that kids from the 1980s, like me have got to wallow in our own crapulence for years.

The “Terminator” franchise is a weird thing because the powers-that-be behind these movies have made repeated attempts to soft reboot the series over the past decade. In Hollywood, parlance, a “reboot” is a fresh start — with a “hard” reboot meaning the franchise begins again from scratch, and a “soft” reboot involving an attempt to sort of refresh the series while still acknowledging the previous films. “Salvation” tried to reboot the series into being about the future post-apocalyptic war against the machines. “Genisys” tried to recontextualize the battle through time in order to dramatically alter the franchise dynamic. And “Terminator: Dark Fate” tries to just do it again with new people and also the old people — not unlike what “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” did.
Part of what “Dark Fate” does to reset things involves getting rid of some of the franchise’s existing x-factors.

Apparently, not even James Cameron can salvage The Terminator franchise. Returning to his 1984 creation with Terminator: Dark Fate, he made the bold (and probably correct) decision to jettison everything that happened after the first sequel. Recognizing that all subsequent stories have failed to recapture the thrills of these two, he decides to wipe the board clean and upend all the audience expectations.
Cleverly, he picks up with clips from Terminator 2: Judgment Day then makes a clean break by having John Connor shot dead, creating a branching timeline that prevented audiences from knowing what came next. However, what we discover is that Skynet may not exist, but Legion, an equally vile AI, has taken control and is sending their version of Terminators — Rev-9 (Gabriel Luna) — after the next “savior”, a young woman Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes). In the end, its different but startlingly familiar.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton star in Skydance Productions and Paramount Pictures’ “Terminator: Dark Fate.”

What might have been an extraordinary movie died a dud. Terminator: Dark Fate collapsed under it’s own weight, after months of hype, and millions of dollars. Probably more than one career ended with this movie. I’m not being dramatic, that bomb had some stink on it.
Official Synopsis: More than two decades have passed since Sarah Connor prevented Judgment Day, changed the future, and re-wrote the fate of the human race. Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes) is living a simple life in Mexico City with her brother (Diego Boneta) and father when a highly advanced and deadly new Terminator – a Rev-9 (Gabriel Luna) – travels back through time to hunt and kill her. Dani’s survival depends on her joining forces with two warriors: Grace (Mackenzie Davis), an enhanced super-soldier from the future,...

Since 1984, the Terminator franchise has certainly proved that the future is very much not set. 35 years on and we have seen director James Cameron’s original film and his seminal 1991 sequel, T2: Judgment Day, rightly celebrated as classics. They remain benchmarks that few other Sci-Fi or action films could ever hope to reach, least of all the sequels that have since followed. While the series has increasingly mustered hype or hope, following T2 has proved to be a battle even the human resistance could not win and yet, like Skynet, the franchise has remained inevitable. So, for the third time in history we gear up for an attempt at “Terminator 3”, only this time Cameron is back (in a producing capacity) and Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) has finally returned. So is Tim Miller’s (Deadpool) Terminator: Dark Fate able to succeed where others failed? Yes…and…No!

At 35 years of age, the “Terminator” franchise is older than I am. While most parts of the franchise have only arrived in the past 16 years, we’re all still living in the past with this one, pining for the days of “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” Which is where “Terminator: Dark Fate” comes in.
Paramount has worked hard marketing the latest franchise film as a direct sequel to “Judgment Day,” ignoring the three sequels that have come since then following Sarah Connor’s attempts to prevent Skynet’s nuclear holocaust proved futile. James Cameron’s involvement as producer has been emphasized, and while Arnold Schwarzenegger, the longtime face of “Terminator,” remains a major presence in trailers and TV spots, the top draw this time around is Linda Hamilton, returning after 28 years to play Sarah Connor as an aging but still-formidable defender of humanity.

Terminator: Dark Fate follows the Halloween franchise in recentering the story around the women who started it all.
This article contains spoilers for Terminator: Dark Fate and Halloween (2018).
What do a 19-year-old waitress and a 16-year-old babysitter have in common? Neither got any warning that her life was about to be shattered. In the space of one fateful night and a violent attack that neither could have predicted or prevented, their idyllic existences—dates and daydreams, service shifts and National Honor Society—are transformed into desperate fights for survival. Sarah Connor of the Terminator movies and Laurie Strode of Halloween become final girls, but more than that, they are remade as mothers of franchises. Each woman’s first showdown, with the Terminator and with Michael Myers, respectively, spawns an entire fictional world that largely grows up without them.
Until now with the release of Terminator: Dark Fate and last year’s Halloween.

As Terminator: Dark Fate begins, things have changed for the better. Yet, that doesn't stop a deadly new Terminator (Gabriel Luna) from traveling through time with the intention of killing Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes). Only with the assistance of super-soldier Grace (Mackenzie Davis) and battle-hardened warrior Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) does Dani stand a chance at survival. Will an apparently retired T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) help or hurt those prospects? Now in theaters,...

Paramount, Skydance and Disney’s “Terminator: Dark Fate” failed to ignite much traction overseas, launching with a soft $72.9 million from 48 international territories.
The sixth “Terminator” installment debuted with a dismal $29 million in North America, bringing worldwide ticket sales to $123 million. That’s a disappointing result considering the movie cost $185 million before considering global marketing and distribution fees. Disney is releasing the movie in all foreign territories aside from China, where Tencent Pictures is handling distribution. Paramount is distributing the movie in North America. All three companies co-financed the film, meaning any potential losses will be broken up among the different players.
“Terminator: Dark Fate” had the strongest start in China with a tepid $28 million, followed by Korea with $9.8 million and the United Kingdom with $6.9 million. Imax screens accounted for $9 million of global ticket sales, $2.9 million of which came from China.

Review by Peter BelsitoThis is a sequel to a long-running franchise. There’ve been — what? — five versions before this? With much time travel in these Terminator movies, which have always trafficked in alternate futures and pasts — there’s a temptation to include a recapitulation of where things stand before getting started and what’s happened before.
We’ll skip that.
We’ll let Terminator: Dark Fate, a satisfyingly solid sixth installment in the sci-fi series about various Terminators, stand on its own virtues. It works or at least I enjoyed and followed it. I saw but did not reflect nor was I bothered by recalling any of the previous 5 films. This one worked.
Dark Fate is only a sequel to the first two films, both of which were directed by James Cameron. Cameron is again involved here, as a producer and story consultant, but he didn’t have anything to do with the third,...

“Terminator: Dark Fate” shot past box office competition but fell significantly short of expectations as Paramount, Skydance Media and Disney’s sci-fi sequel debuted to $29 million in North America.
The sixth installment in the “Terminator” franchise landed in first place on domestic box office charts, but the results are disappointing given the film’s $185 million budget. Heading into the weekend, the movie was expected to collect over $40 million during its first three days in theaters. A start above $40 million seemed attainable since reviews were strong and audience sentiment was overwhelmingly positive. “Joker” could have cannibalized ticket sales for “Terminator” since both film’s catered to younger men. For “Dark Fate,” 60% of opening weekend crowds were male, over half of which were under the age of 30.
International audiences might give the film a boost, though China only brought in a middling $28 million and could continue to stall in coming weeks. Overseas,...

Paramount’s “Terminator: Dark Fate” is falling short of expectations with a projected $27 million opening weekend at 4,086 North American locations.
Though the sixth installment of the sci-fi franchise is dominating domestic moviegoing, the results are a disappointment, given the hefty $185 million cost. “Terminator: Dark Fate” took in $10.6 million on its opening day, including $2.4 million from previews on Halloween night.
Pre-release forecasts for “Dark Fate” had been in the $40 million range. The film had generated buzz due to it being the first franchise entry since 1991’s “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” with series creator James Cameron and stars Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger returning.
“Dark Fate” centers on Hamilton’s resistance leader Sarah Connor protecting a young girl from a deadly new killer cyborg from the future. Tim Miller (“Deadpool”) directed “Dark Fate” from a screenplay by David S. Goyer, Justin Rhodes and Billy Ray. New cast members include Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes and Gabriel Luna.

Paramount’s “Terminator: Dark Fate” is stumbling toward a $28 million opening weekend at 4,086 North American locations — significantly below forecasts, early estimates showed on Friday.
Pre-release forecasts for the sixth installment in the sci-fi series had been in the $40 million range. The third weekend of Disney’s “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and the fifth frame of “Joker” are battling for second place in the $11 million to $12 million range, with “Joker” appearing to lead. The comic-book pic will wind up the weekend with about $297 million in domestic grosses.
Focus Features’ Harriet Tubman biopic “Harriet,” starring Cynthia Erivo, is coming in at the high end of forecasts, between $10 million and $11 million at 2,059 sites. But Warner Bros.’ crime drama “Motherless Brooklyn” and Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures’ animated adventure “Arctic Dogs” are showing little traction and heading for openings in the $2 million to $3 million range. All three new entries had been forecast to debut around $10 million each.

For as time-hoppy-twisted and messily scripted the last two Terminator franchise entries were, Terminator: Dark Fate isn’t all that more successful beyond slavish recreation. Sarah Connor stopped “Judgment Day” and saved humanity, but what if man’s hubris caused the same artificial intelligence mistakes to still be made – just delayed?
Dark Fate is a familiar reboot hinging on positive revamp qualities (kickass girl gang!) in all the wrong ways. More T-800, more mechanized Two-Face headshots, and more digitized attack sequences that mainstream movies love to lean on nowadays.
It’s been some twenty years since Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) altered Earth’s doomed fate, or so she thought. Turns out her destruction of Skynet only delayed our technological judegment, as a new A.I. program labeled “Legion” retaliates against humanity with equal devastation. Mackenzie Davis, Gabriel Luna and Natalia Reyes tell us why they wanted to fight for the future in Terminator: Dark Fate.
If you’re an up and coming actor, do you want to land a part in a franchise like the Terminator movies? After all, those films have long been dominated by the presence of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s title cyborg, and the last two or three entries in the saga have taken their fair share of knocks (and arguably then some).
But there is still something cool about getting involved in one of sci-fi cinema’s most acclaimed and groundbreaking (both visually and thematically) franchises, which is how Mackenzie Davis (Blade Runner 2049), Gabriel Luna (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and newcomer Natalia Reyes came to star in Terminator: Dark Fate alongside series icons Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton -- the latter returning to the role of Sarah Connor...

“Terminator: Dark Fate,” the latest sequel to the “Terminator” franchise that brought back the original stars Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger, made $2.35 million in previews on Thursday night. It opens on approximately 4,000 screens this weekend.
As November kicks off, “Terminator: Dark Fate” is one of four titles opening in wide release this weekend. Warner Bros. has the noir film “Motherless Brooklyn” starring Edward Norton, Focus Features has “Harriet,” the Harriet Tubman biopic starring Cynthia Erivo, and Entertainment Studios has the animated “Arctic Dogs.” Additionally, Netflix is releasing Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” into limited theaters beginning this weekend.
“Dark Fate,” though, is aiming to prevent Judgment Day yet again and bring the “Terminator” franchise back to life, with the studio projecting an opening between $35-40 million behind a $185 million budget. It would have to overperform to $45 million to become the highest opening for a Terminator film, ahead of 2003’s “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

Paramount/Skydance Media/Fox’s Terminator: Dark Fate drew $2.35M from 7 p.m. shows on Halloween night. Last night we were hearing early estimates between $1.5M-$1.7M, so this definitely is an improvement on that.
That’s on par with the Tuesday night previews of its previous chapter, Terminator: Genisys which made $2.3M back on June 30, 2015. In fact it is pretty good for a Halloween night, which typically attracts audiences to genre and family fare. Genisys had a five-day opening, making $27M over its three-day weekend and $42.4M over five days. Note this is the second time in the Terminator franchise since the first pic in 1984 that one of its pics have played the fall corridor and also opened on a pure 3-day weekend. Typically Terminator movies play the July 4th spread, opening mid-week and racking up a five-seven day run. Terminator Salvation was the only movie to play the...

Prior to the release of Terminator: Dark Fate, many suspected that Linda Hamilton’s iconic longtime franchise heroine Sarah Connor might not make it to the credits. After all, the actress has taken long periods of retirement from the role and it took James Cameron himself to convince her that the project was worthwhile.
However – minor spoilers to follow – the ending of Dark Fate potentially sets up the character continuing in a mentor role to Natalia Reyes’ Dani. But would she return for another tussle with the time-travelling killer robots? Well, when asked by an interviewer, Hamilton refused to be pinned down, claiming:
“You know, it’s not up to me. I choose my work based on story and character, so if it’s there and it’s good enough, I would want to do it.”

Time and Terminators make fools of us all. Much like the cold-blooded killers that have inhabited it, the sci-fi action franchise seems hellbent in its refusal to die. At six films in–across four studios and five filmmakers–few other film series have been able to sustain such longevity despite a seemingly exponential growth in disapproval. Every few years, a new model reemerges with a subsequent dismay from even the most ardent of fans. With Terminator: Dark Fate, however, there looms the promise of a true fresh start: a Terminator 3 the die-hards wish they’d gotten. This installment touts the return of Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor, and James Cameron with a story and producer credit. The latter is a curious laurel, considering Cameron had given his thumbs up on every previous entry that wasn’t his, but alas, whatever fills the seats. A surprisingly uninspired rehash, Terminator: Dark Fate is high on action but low on ambition. When Arnold Schwarzenegger finally shows up, this sixth installment briefly comes to life, but it’s too little too late. Aside from the (mostly) Arnold-free Terminator Salavation in 2009, this is without a doubt the weakest entry in an otherwise fairly esteemed sci-fi franchise, Terminator: Dark Fate opens with a brief prologue involving a de-aged Linda Hamilton and Ed Furlong before two new characters are introduced. The first is the lean and muscular Grace (played by Mackenzie Davis), who appears, as do all time travelers in this series, in an energy burst that drops her naked into the present. She’s traveled backwards to protect yet another future resistance leader named Dani Ramos (tiny Natalia Reyes) who resides in Mexico. Dani is being pursued, for the same reason Sarah Connor was in the first two installments,...

Any Terminator fan can tell you that Sarah Connor — former waitress, mother of the anti-machine-resistance messiah, all-around survivalist badass — stops Skynet from turning the world into a dystopic junkyard and saves 3 billion lives at the end of 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Her faith in her fellow man has been restored, and the notion that even an android can learn compassion has softened her heart, if not her rock-hard muscular arms. We last see Sarah speeding into the unknown with her son, John, having secured a future in which humanity...

Paramount and David Ellison’s Skydance have a lot riding on “Terminator: Dark Fate,” the latest reboot of the famed sci-fi franchise which hits theaters Friday. The $185 million film, which marks the repairing of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton for the first time since since “T2: Judgment Day” 28 years ago, is currently projected to gross a modest $35-40 million domestically from 4,000-plus screens.
If the film overperforms and opens to $45 million, it would have the highest raw opening for any “Terminator” film, beating the $44 million opening of the 2003 film “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.” “T2: Judgment Day” still remains the biggest box office hit in the series with $520 million in worldwide ticket sales in 1991 — but on a leaner $102 million budget.
More alarming, Paramount and Skydance are coming off a big failed gamble with “Gemini Man,” a $140 million sci-fi film that tried to drum up interest through Will Smith,...
