In June, “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment recently scored two highly coveted comic book licenses from Hasbro, “The Transformers” and “G.I. Joe,” with both planned for release this fall as part of the new “Energon Universe.”
Kirkman won’t have any input into future movies based on “G.I. Joe,” but given the difficulty that franchise has had on the big screen lately, we couldn’t help but ask Kirkman for his take now that he’s got a toehold on the universe.
“There’s certainly good aspects to the, the ‘Snake Eyes’ movie, and the other two ‘GI Joe’ movies, I think that maybe didn’t perform in the box office as much as Hasbro and Paramount would have liked,” Kirkman said during the Q&a portion of the “Transformers & G.I. Joe Return in The Energon Universe” panel at San Diego Comic-Con, hosted by Comicbook.com’s James Viscardi.

The hook of these fantastic Marvels Snapshot books has been the ordinary observing the extraordinary. That is, what is it like for the more average people in the Marvel Universe? What’s their story? It’s a nice idea, and one that writers have a lot of fun with. Writer Jay Edidin puts his own spin on that take here. The ‘ordinary’ observer to events this time round is a resident of a Nebraska orphanage, a certain teenage Scott Summers. He’s destined to have a massive impact on the Marvel Universe, he just doesn’t know it yet. I love this idea for a couple of reasons. One, it’s smart. Pre-powers heroes are as ‘ordinary’ as the rest of us. Two, I’ve always felt that Scott Summers has never really been portrayed that well. Cyclops was picked as X-Men leader,...

Friday night Twilight Zone reruns, Saturday afternoon Frankenstein matinees, and Sunday morning Godzilla flicks; these were the films that introduced my lifelong love affair with horror films. My parents were the influencers, the ones that nurtured my fascinations with the fantastic, weird, and wonderful world of genre film. I was taught from them to respect the classics, the films of Hitchcock, the genius of Lon Chaney, and the storytelling of Sterling, but they also emphasized an understanding and study of the past. These guidelines have, and continue, to shape my thoughts and ideas about film.
But in 1988, the introduction to the sinister and suspenseful nature of horror was still fresh for a middle-schooler who couldn't get enough of watching scary movies in the dark with stove-top popcorn and Rc Cola. Growing up in a lower- to middle-class family with young siblings and hard-working parents didn’t leave a lot of...
