"Elma Reid was born in Aberdeen and was trained at the Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
She made her professional debut in 1926 in pantomime, and later played leading roles on tour for three years.
Her most important parts include Anne in "The Dover Road", Mary Shelton in "The Wrecker", Penelope Moon in "Billeted", Mary Frampton in "The Moving Finger", Gladys Brabazon in "Getting Mother Married", and Joan Ripley in "Husbands are a Problem". Next came an important part in "The Dishonoured Lady" at the Playhouse Theatre, followed by others in the phenomenally successful German farce "It's a Boy!" at the Strand Theatre and in "Take Two from One" at the Haymarket.
Elma Reid excels in straight and light comedy roles. She possesses a fluent knowledge of French, in addition, of course, to the Scotch dialect, which she acquired as a child. Height five feet two inches, with fair hair and dark grey eyes".
