Fans of Judy Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” had to wait more than 50 years to see the classic children’s novel transferred to the big screen, but their patience was finally rewarded this spring. Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig (“The Edge of Seventeen”) and featuring such A-listers as Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates, the faithful film adaptation boasts an awe-inspiring Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 99% and was even described by its source’s author in a “Today” interview as “better than the book.” As the 2024 movie awards season begins, its best shot at a Golden Globe nomination lies with its 15-year-old star, Abby Ryder Fortson, who would be the fifth youngest contender in the history of her category.
At this point, Fortson is hovering directly outside of Gold Derby’s predicted six-person Best Comedy/Musical Actress lineup with the support of just over a quarter of our oddsmakers.

As Carol Burnett turns 90, she bristles at the idea of looking back at her legacy. She’s not one to watch old episodes of her iconic “The Carol Burnett Show,” for example. “I’m not like Norma Desmond,” she quips, referring to the fading star in “Sunset Boulevard.” “The only time I do it is if I have to for a reason.”
In this case, NBC gave her a good one. The network is set to air “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love” on April 26, and the special features both new performances and clips from Burnett’s storied career. And it gave Burnett a chance to reminisce with old friends — and new.
“It’s exactly what I wanted,” Burnett said. “I didn’t want a birthday party with cake and balloons and confetti and all of that. What I wanted was to have an entertaining show. And that’s what we got.

Carol Burnett has always made the audience her priority. Over 11 seasons of her landmark variety show, she indulged fans in countless Tarzan yells, never reshot a sketch when one of her co-stars cracked up and prided herself on getting The Carol Burnett Show‘s weekly crowds (and its staff) out of the studio in time for dinner. Naturally, during the recent taping of the upcoming NBC special Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love, she avoided the trappings of a clip show. And she kept things moving. “It’s a two-hour show, and we were done in about two-and-a-half,” she says of her early birthday party — filmed in front of a live audience. “I want people to feel like they’re seeing a Broadway show, not sitting around waiting for scenery or costume changes.”

"Annie" goes back a long way.
John Huston's 1982 musical film version of "Annie" was based on a Broadway show that debuted in Connecticut in 1976. That musical was, in turn, based on the popular newspaper comic strip "Little Orphan Annie" which made its own debut in 1924. Authored by Harold Gray from its start until his death in 1968, "Little Orphan Annie" was a cultural staple for many decades. After Gray's passing, other authors continued the strip's run until its final cancelation in 2010. Gray based "Little Orphan Annie" on a James Whitcomb Riley poem that was first published in 1885. The poem was originally called "The Elf Child," but was later changed to "Little Orphant Annie" (employing a Hoosier dialect on "orphant"). This is all to say, "Annie" has been part of the popular consciousness for over 137 years.

Ann Reinking, a Broadway veteran who starred in the original production of Chicago, won a Tony Award as its choreographer and also co-starred in the films Annie and All That Jazz, has died. Auditions make me nervous. Not for myself — I’m beyond the casting-call stage of life. But rather for anyone who still has the nerve to endure the almost always disappointing, sometimes humiliating, process of being screened, interviewed, tested and most probably rejected for a role in show business. Or journalism. Or politics, wherein the final auditions for a part as Joe Biden’s vice presidential running mate are reported to be underway.
The Biden casting process, confined to women, has been wide, semi-public and deliberate enough to keep a lot of proud candidates dangling. At one time or another, Stacey Abrams, Keisha Lance Bottoms, Val Demings and Elizabeth Warren have been in the mix. Fantasy whispers about Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama won’t go away. I thought throwing out my Annie CDs would be easy--i thought I only had one Obviously that would be the indispensable Original Broadway Cast Recording with Dorothy Loudon and Andrea McArdle. How wrong I was I knew that, as a kid, I had the tape of the 1982 movie soundtrack with Carol Burnett and Aileen Quinn and an all-star supporting cast, but I didn't remember buying it on CD. And when the hell did I get the CD of the 1999 TV version with Kathy Bates and an all-star cast And, oh yeah... I forgot about this studio album from the 90s with studio cast queen Kim Criswell--I think I bought back in the day somehow convincing myself Ruthie Henshall was playing Annie. Little orphan Annie is all grown up! There was a touching "Annie" reunion at the Actors Fund's 19th Annual Tony Awards Viewing party on Sunday in Los Angeles. Aileen Quinn (Annie) joined her costar Tim Curry (the evil Rooster Hannigan) at the event, where he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. It's been 33 years since the beloved 1982 musical hit the big screen -- and it's been that long since these two have seen each other. "He was so caring and nurturing. I know he's known for these crazy, wild, evil characters, but offscreen, he was so kind to me," Aileen told MovieFone on the red carpet. "He would protect me and hold my hand real tight during stunt work. He would ask, 'Are you nervous?' He was so sweet. I can't wait to give him a big hug." Tim suffered a stroke two years ago, and while his speech has slowed,...

Congrats to Tim Curry, who made a rare public appearance Sunday night in Los Angeles to accept an award. It was one of the first times the beloved "Rocky Horror Picture Show" star has been in the public eye since a 2012 stroke left him in a wheelchair.
The 69-year-old star may not be the same energetic force we remember as "sweet transvestite" Frank-n-Furter, but he told Moviefone he's "very lucky" to be honored by his peers. "It feels amazing. I feel very lucky," he said of accepting his Lifetime Achievement Award from the Actors Fund.
He also wished "good luck" to Will Poulter ("We're the Millers"), who's been cast as the new Pennywise the clown in the upcoming remake of Stephen King's "It," a role Curry played to perfection in the 1990 mini-series. "It's a wonderful part," Curry said of Stephen King's unforgettable evil clown, who terrorizes a group of children.

"It's a wonderful part," Curry said of Stephen King's unforgettable evil clown, who terrorizes a group of children.

As Will Gluck's new film version of "Annie" opens, an adorable red-haired moppet stands in front of her class reading a plucky book report. As she finishes, her teacher rolls his eyes and calls on the next student, Annie B. With that very post-modern move, things are handed over to Quvenzhane Wallis, who approaches her first scene the way she approaches literally every single second of the film: big smile in place, bouncing rather than dancing, and sing-talking her way through songs that demand a much better singer. Harsh, perhaps, but from start to finish, "Annie" feels like a movie made by people who are deeply embarrassed to be working on a musical, and that's a problem. Wallis, who is an appealing young performer, simply doesn't have the chops for what has traditionally been one of the more demanding leads in a musical for a young performer, and Gluck,...

This week, we finally get to see the Jay Z/Will Smith–produced reboot of Annie that we did not ask for but will take anyway, because of our plucky, can-do spirit. (But, you know, we will take it cautiously. Cameron Diaz? No “We’d Like to Thank You, Herbert Hoover”? Will Stacks? It’s a tense time to be a fan of Annie.) So how’s about you and your loyal dog hop in my DeLorean Gif for a trip back to the week of May 19, 1982, when the original Aileen Quinn/Albert Finney film adaptation had its U.S. premiere? (The movie went into wide-release the following month.) Was the Billboard Top 40 as bewildering then as it is now? Maaaayyyybeeeee …40. "I Don’t Know Where to Start," Eddie RabbittEddie Rabbitt was one of those early '80s country guys who managed to cross over onto the pop charts in...

This unecessary reboot is clearly meant to warm the cockles, but boring musical numbers and hammy performances simply leave the viewer with a sugar rush of nausea
There’s been an update to that well-known tune about Annie, the parentless little cutester melting the flinty heart of the scowling plutocrat billionaire looking after her. It’s based on – and basically mired in – the 1970s Broadway musical, which has already had two movie adaptations: the 1982 film directed by John Huston with Aileen Quinn as Annie and Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks, and the 1999 version directed by Rob Marshall with Alicia Morton and Victor Garber.
This new one, on the other hand, is basically like a horrific mix of Lionel Bart’s Oliver, My Fair Lady and Pretty Woman. Did we really need another go-around for Annie, that indomitable little curly-haired moppet, who defiantly sings about how she’ll “love ya tomorrow...

From a poem to a play to a number of high-profile films, Annie has been a very popular orphan.
Columbia Pictures released a brand-new trailer for the upcoming musical comedy Annie, and in it we get a fun, lighthearted look at the world of orphans who are forced to be political pawns in order for a wealthy man to maintain his grasp on power and influence over the population. But, in a fun way, and also there's a lesson about love in there too.
However, this story goes back over 130 years through a long and complicated lineage of adaptation and interpretation in various forms of media. So let's take a look back at the history of Annie.

The more we see and hear about the remake of "Annie" with Quvenzhané Wallis and Jamie Foxx, the more we like it... Mostly.
First, we had some questions about Cameron Diaz as Miss Hannigan, but okay, we'll roll with it. Then there was that emoji video; the less said about that, the better. And now there's this version of "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile."
Power pop singer and producer Sia is contributing three songs to the soundtrack; you can hear her take on "It's a Hard Knock Life" in the background of the second trailer of the movie. However, this stand-alone version of "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile," which is sung by Sia herself, gives us pause. Granted, '80s kids who grew up on the Aileen Quinn version are going to be hard to please - especially now that we're cranky adults! - but this electro-flavored,...

Kids say the darnedest things! Isn't that what Bill Cosby taught us back in the 1990s? Well, the legendary comedian was right, obviously, especially when it comes to memorable movie quotes. We wanted to take a look back through the decades at some of the most hilarious, touching, unforgettable lines said by kid characters (most are live-action, but there are a few animated characters too). We even asked some of our friends and readers what their favorites were and came up with this list of 25, but it just as easily could have been 50.
And if you notice we paid extra attention to the '80s and '90s, let's just say that's when many of us were growing up; we're sure younger (and older) readers could come up with an entirely different lineup of quotes. Feel free to share them in the comments!

There are people out there who have never seen The Princess Bride. They walk among us, holding down jobs, contributing to society, and generally living happy, semi-fulfilled lives. But whisper a perfectly-timed “mawage” in their direction during a wedding, and the resulting blank stare or awkward chuckle will expose an inconceivable pop-cultural blind spot. Someone failed them when they were growing up.

As we continue on, I need to once again clarify that if this list was “Joshua Gaul’s 50 Favorite Movie Musicals,” it’d be a quite a different list. But, if my tastes determined what is definitive, I’d be asking you all to consider Aladdin as a brilliant piece of filmmaking and wax nostalgic about my love for Batteries Not Included and Flight of the Navigator (not for the musicals list, of course). Much to my dismay, my tastes are not universal. I’d like to think my research methods are.

The trailer is up for Sony's contemporary approach to "Annie" and performances look completely overdone and unrealistic from both Cameron Diaz and lead Quvenzhané Wallis. This just doesn't seem to have the magic of a beloved musical which has left a soft spot in so many of those who watched the stage version or the `981 film which starred Albert Finney (now Jamie Foxx) and Aileen Quinn. The way the trailer starts off with Diaz is just appalling, and it's pretty much downhill from that point onwards. We've had a butchered "Karate Kid" from Overbrook, and now here comes "Annie" to finish us off. Will Gluck directs as well as writing the script alongside Aline Brosh McKenna. The film is produced by Will Smith, James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith, Laurence "Jay" Brown, Shawn "Jay Z" Carter, Tyran "Ty Ty" Smith and Gluck.

The legendary John Huston directs this much-loved version of the hit Broadway musical, starring Aileen Quinn as the young orphan who changes the life of munitions billionaire Daddy Warbucks (Albert Finney). Miss Hannigan is not a sacred role.
Hundreds have played the negligent, booze-soaked ward of that Depression-era orphanage. That’s one of the great things about musicals. The parts are interchangeable by design. We may have our favorites, but on a certain level, we accept that the part is expected to live on separately from any individual performance, transcending generations and even the beloved soundtrack. Committing that performance to film, however, does tend to get people riled up in a way that, say, Nick Jonas playing Marius in Les Misérables on stage does not.

Cameron Diaz will reportedly play the boozy shrew who manages the run-down orphanage in Annie, the upcoming cinematic adaptation starring Quvenzhane Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) as the adorable orphan and Jamie Foxx as an updated Daddy Warbucks named Benjamin Stacks. I remember the 1982 Annie quite well. I was five when it was released and I think the #1 thing I took away from it all these years later is how much I love Geoffrey Holder, not so much for his role as Punjab, but more for his weird performance in Live and Let Die and his excellent work in Boomerang. Of course there was Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks and Carol Burnett as Miss Hannigan. Nothing came of Aileen Quinn who played Annie, but perhaps 2014's remake, which will feature the Oscar-nominated star of Beasts of the Southern Wild, Quvenzhane Wallis, in the lead role will only solidify the young actress in the hearts of audiences. It's already been reported Jamie Foxx will take on Finney's role though the name Daddy Warbucks has been upgraded for modern audiences to Benjamin Stacks and Easy A helmer Will Gluck will direct.
