World-premiering in this year’s Forum program at Berlinale, The Secret Drawer (Il cassetto segreto) finds director Costanza Quatriglio returning to her childhood home in Sicily to explore the library and archive of her father Giuseppe Quatriglio. A major historical figure of the Giornale di Sicilia and other important newspapers––as well as a writer, essayist, and friend of intellectuals of the twentieth century––her film is built on the discovery of over 60,000 photographic negatives, dozens of 8mm reels, and hundreds of hours of sound recordings. Ahead of the premiere, we’re pleased to exclusively premiere the first trailer and poster.
Here’s the synopsis: “Costanza has a famous father. Giuseppe Quatriglio was a Sicilian journalist, author and globetrotter. Smart, hungry for life, good-looking. He filled a house with books, texts and mementos. It was in this rich environment that Costanza grew up. In 2010, she begins filming her father, without extra lighting,...

Berlinale co-directors Carlo Chatrian and Mariette Rissenbeek are going out with a bang in their final year, with a lineup unveiled today featuring the latest works by Olivier Assayas, Bruno Dumont, Mati Diop, Hong Sang-soo, Abderrahmane Sissako, Jane Schoenbrun, Alonso Ruizpalacios, Matias Pineiro, Travis Wilkerson, Kazik Radwanski, Annie Baker, and more.
When the co-directors were asked by Screen Daily about their departure, Chatrian said, “It’s quite simple. Mariette and I had a mandate of five years. It is true that at the beginning I said that I was willing to go on because there was a shared will with the [German] Ministry [of Culture] to go on. But then the people who have the responsibility to see the future of the Berlinale thought this structure of two leaders was not the right one and I don’t consider myself able to run the festival alone. And that was the decision of the Ministry.

Danny Glover was recently a juror and mentor at Turkey’s virtual International Migration Film Festival, for which he took a deep dive into films tackling the plight of migrants around the world from his home in San Francisco, just as protests over the death of George Floyd escalated in the U.S.
The actor-writer-producer and passionate political activist spoke to Variety about how he’s been associating the current global migrant crisis with the historical roots of violence against African Americans in the U.S. The screen icon, known for classics such as “Places in the Heart,” “The Color Purple” and the “Lethal Weapon” franchise, also discussed his parallel career as a producer of socially relevant films by global auteurs, such as Cannes Palme d’Or winner “Uncle Boonmee who can Recall his Past Lives,” and why “Lethal Weapon 5” should come back “within the political framework that we are in.

For its first edition the International Migration Film Festival has assembled a diverse lineup of eight titles tackling the plight of refugees and migrants around the world and running the gamut from feelgood comedy to gut-wrenching dramas and docs.
They will vie for a best feature film award worth €15,000 and also a prize for most inspiring script worth €5,000, both to be decided by a prestigious international jury comprising Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan, who serves as jury president, American actor Danny Glover, Iranian actor Shahab Hosseini, Bosnian actor Emir Hadzihafizbegovic, Danish filmmaker Lone Scherfig, and British costume designer Sandy Powell.
The selection, which will be visible in Turkey June 14-21 on the FestivalScope platform, serves as a nice primer of recent pics tackling the topic, but also as “a reminder to not let people forget about refugees” during this time when the coronavirus pandemic – which has also greatly added to...

Following the announcement that came earlier this week, launching yet another hugely impressive line-up at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, the respective line-up has now been announced for what is in some ways its European counterpart, the 2013 Venice Film Festival.
The announcement shows that the two will continue to have a number of films overlapping, including Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity (the Opening Night Film in Venice), Peter Landesman’s Parkland, Stephen Frears’ Philomena, and more. But it also brings with its news of where a number of films will be making their debut, including Terry Gilliam’s The Zero Theorem; the latest film from Hayao Miyazaki, The Wind Rises; James Franco’s Child of God; Lee Sang-il’s Yurusarezaru Mono, the Japanese remake of Unforgiven; and Steven Knight’s Locke, led by Tom Hardy, and shot in one take.

With still several films not yet announced for the behemoth Toronto Int. Film Festival, it appears that 2013 will be a significant cross-over year for Venice titles (Joe, Night Moves, Parkland, Philomena, Tracks, Under the Skin) landing in the Canadian capitol and from the get-go, it appears that Toronto programmers have indeed stole some of the thunder from the Alberto Barbera’s Lido, specifically in the case where they grabbed world premiere rights to Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave with the Fox Searchlight folks possibly looking to keep the film on North American soil. However, for the time being that are titles that are worth salivating over that will be making their preems on the Lido – along with a grab bag of Euro and Asian titles we have the highly anticipated showings for Hayao Miyazaki’s Kaze Tachinu, Tsai Ming-liang’s Stray Dogs, Xavier Dolan’s Tom a la Ferme...

Surprise, surprise! We have Venice Film Festival winners and as usual, we’re here to share the complete list of winners with you!
Now, about that surprise part, here’s the strangest thing in the world of festivals so far. We all knew that Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master was one strong contender for the festival’s top prize, so I guess we were (and still are) all shocked when the jury decided to give Golden Lion to Kim Ki-Duk and his Pieta.
And all that because, well…apparently Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix were just too good in The Master and they both received that acting award a.k.a. Volpi Cup.
That leads us to Festival’s new rule where one film can not win more than two major awards, which basically means only one thing – Thomas Anderson goes home with the Silver Lion for best director.

Venice, the festival that acts more like your elementary school tee-ball league than you may have realized. Due to the dozens upon dozens of awards given, pretty much everyone gets at least a “good try”-esque pat on the back — well except maybe Brian De Palma and his poorly received erotic drama Passion.
While you likely only care about the first handful of awards — in which Kim-Ki Duk‘s drama following a debt collector, Pieta, has won the top prize and The Master took home top acting prizes — nearly everyone from Harmony Korine to Robert Redford to Spike Lee have been awarded honors.
In interesting tidbit, THR also reports that Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master was set to win the top prize of Golden Lion, but due to a rule change, a film can’t win more than two major awards. So, the jury had to deliberate again (I...
