Martin Freeman returns for The Responder series 2, which is heading to the BBC in early May: here’s the trailer for the show.
The first series of psychological drama The Responder held a mirror up to the emotional extremes of life on the front line of British policing. Written by former Merseyside police officer Tony Schumacher, the show was equal parts a thrilling police procedural and intense character study, with a tour de force performance by Martin Freeman at the centre. It was one of the biggest dramas of 2022, winning Freeman an International Emmy for Best Actor and several BAFTA nominations. Half of the first series was directed by Philip Barantini, who went on to direct the brilliant Boiling Point.
Set and filmed in Liverpool, it followed Chris Carter, an inspector, as he gets demoted and begins working the night shift. The drama interspersed scenes of Chris tackling various crimes...

Separated siblings, bullied children, horrible accidents and Marc Bolan’s death are only some of the tragedies here, but strong performances keep the horrors watchable
This Wales, Liverpool and London-set drama is a proper melodrama any way you slice it, but one with strong enough performances and sufficiently good dialogue to keep it from feeling tacky. The first chunk of expository scene-setting shuttles back and forth between the 1970s and the present day, establishing a sunny comic tone that’s suddenly pierced by tragedy. In the 70s, a coachload of kids from a children’s home are travelling to see their favourite band, T Rex, chaperoned by the home’s vicar (Andrew Lancel) and cheery carer Simon. The vicar’s daughter Penny (Eden Beach), about 10 years old, is close with home-resident Sadie (Amelia Rose Smith) and Sadie’s shy older brother Jimmy (Isaac Lancel-Watkinson), who is bullied by the older boys.

Jim Wiseman’s Sky original documentary “Williams and Mansell: Red 5” is set for a debut on Sky Documentaries and Now on July 8. Featuring some of the biggest names in F1, it follows Nigel Mansell and the Williams Racing team’s rise to fame told through the eyes of his team, family and drivers including Jenson Button, Damon Hill and Karun Chandhok.
Mansell grew up in England in the 1960s, dreaming of becoming a professional race car driver, despite not having the financial means for it, while Frank Williams was realizing his own dream at the company he founded, Williams Grand Prix Engineering. The two joined forces, and after years of trying to win together, Mansell left to join Ferrari and then ultimately retired from racing after years of ups and downs, without ever winning the Formula One Drivers’ Championship. But seemingly overnight, he came out of retirement and re-joined Williams Racing.

Pennyworth Episode 4
Well, this is a helluva episode. After much of the story is spent with Alfred and Martha Kane exploring the Raven Society infiltrated hamlet, in a rather quirky jaunt, the episode suddenly ends on a dark note that sees the brutal death of Esme.
In retrospect, Esme’s murder was foreshadowed in the opening moments of “Lady Penelope” when an at-first Wayne-esque family of three walks down the wrong alley of this alternate London. However, rather than get mugged, they beat the disfigured beggar. Not to mention the silence outside her door finally entered. Similarly, things were looking too suspiciously rosy for Esme, what with her getting on famously with Alfie’s cantankerous pop (Ian Puleston-Davies).

The world needed a series about how Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon) grew up to be Batman’s butler as much as it needs one about the tailor who sells Bruce Banner all those purple pants. But to its credit, Epix’s Pennyworth — from Gotham creator Bruno Heller and that show’s chief director, Danny Cannon — doesn’t particularly care about filling in blanks of the Bat mythos, even though Bruce Wayne’s father, Thomas (Ben Aldridge), keeps crossing paths here with his future manservant. Rather, Heller is using the connection...

After Gotham and Krypton, get ready for...Pennyworth, a Batman prequel focusing on Alfred.
Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, the masterminds behind Batman prequel, Gotham, are staying in the DC Universe a little longer. And Epix will be the well-kept home for Pennyworth, a series about the youth of future Wayne butler Alfred Pennyworth, to apply his trade.
No, wait, come back. There's a rather cool hook to this, as Pennyworth, which arrives as a 10-episode TV series period piece, is set in London in the 1960s. Here's the official Pennyworth synopsis:
"[Pennyworth] follows Bruce Wayne’s legendary butler, Alfred Pennyworth, a former British Sas soldier in his 20s who forms a security company and goes to work with a young billionaire Thomas Wayne, who's not yet Bruce's father, in 1960’s London."

What happened in Marcella series 1? With series 2 arriving today, here's a reminder of the main action. Spoilers ahead...
Warning: contains massive spoilers for Marcella series one (obviously).
See related Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 episodes 1 & 2 review: Orientation
The first thing to know about Marcella, the TV detective played by Anna Friel in her eponymous 2016 ITV series, is that it’s pronounced Mar-chella as in cherry, not Mar-cella as in Marcel Marceau. Lock that down and you’re on your way.
The next thing to know about Marcella is that she suffers from dissociative fugue, a psychiatric disorder that causes her to enter an amnesiac, often violent state at moments of intense stress. This means that Marcella can suddenly wake up after several hours utterly baffled as to what’s happened or why, much like the viewer after the series one finale.
