Rob Zombie's "The Munsters" hits home video and streaming today, and it's a loving ode to the widely beloved original 1960s series. Gone are the buckets of blood that accompany some of the director's other work, but his usual flair and attention to detail remain. It's a prequel to the campy classic we know and love, set before the titular Munsters were a happy monstrous family. Starring Zombie staples Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman Munster, Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily Munster, and Daniel Roebuck as The Count/Grandpa Munster, it's a loving and colorful engagement with the classic franchise.
For fans of "The Munsters," there's a lot of fun to be had here, while Rob Zombie fans will find both differences from his extensive film canon with some stylistic commonalities that make it feel like a proper Zombie affair. I spoke with actor Daniel Roebuck about the film, the original series,...

Founded in 1938, Don Post Studios created iconic masks for both Hollywood and the everyman and even invented the classic rubber masks that we all knew and loved as kids on Halloween. This is the company that produced the William Shatner/Captain Kirk mask that became Michael Myers’ impassive visage in the Halloween series. The studio was critical in the shaping of Monster Kids back in the ’60s and ’70s. Don Post himself was buddies with our own Uncle Forry — a match made in horror heaven. The studio has such a dedicated fan base that there was even a convention — Don-Con, of course — last year in Burbank.

I think it’s safe to say that everyone knows the iconic Michael Myers mask is actually a modified Captain Kirk mask from Don Post’s “Star Trek” line. Yes, Myers walks around wearing the whited-out face of William Shatner, which is… Continue Reading →

Today I will conclude my horror film Fun Facts series with the classic John Carpenter film Halloween. I know it seems like the obvious choice since today is Halloween and the film is one of the most iconic horror movies ever made. I'm sure some of you think you know everything about the movie, but there still might just be a few things that you don't know. I thought I knew a lot, but as I did the research I found there were plenty of things about the production of the movie that I had never heard about before. So here are twenty fun facts about John Carpenter's classic horror flick.
For years people would tell Carpenter how horrified they were by Michael Myers grotesquely disfigured face, which we get a glimpse of when Laurie pulls his mask off for a brief moment near the end of the movie.

Bizarre AC II took place June 13-15 at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, and Dread Central went down-the-shore to check it out! Here's our event report plus an overflowing image gallery.
Having traveled to different conventions across the country, I am always searching for that old-school vibe I felt back in the 90’s. I would go to every NYC Weekend of Horrors starting at the age of 14 with my horror-loving father, Joseph Buckley (a man who used to buy Don Post Frankenstein masks from Famous Monsters to scare the kids with in the Heights of Jersey City but would not get the Monster inked on him while in the Navy because he thought it would upset his dad).
Bizarre AC II had that feeling… the feeling of the old ways, the old time when horror was new and everything you saw was not readily available from an online chain store.

Halloween is just a couple months away now, which means we're pretty damn close to the time when those Halloween superstores will once again be popping up in a town near you. That also means you'd better start thinking about who/what you're going to be this year, whether you're going out trick or treating (you're never too old) or kicking back at a friend's house and pounding pumpkin beer. Thankfully, Trick or Treat Studios is here to help! Created by Chris Zephro in 2009, Trick or Treat Studios rose to prominence last year with the release of their officially licensed Michael Myers mask, at long last a quality Myers mask that was made available for a fraction of the cost similar masks had for years been selling for from indepedent mask makers. Zephro and sculptor Justin Mabry's attention to detail paid off, and the Myers mask instantly became not only a fan favorite,...

Fred Dekker’s 1986 horror-masterpiece Night of the Creeps changed my life – and it probably change yours, too. It was the horror film that brought aliens, parasites, axe-murders and zombies together in one grand, hilarious and terrifying masterpiece. It was the horror film that wed John Hughes’ teenaged life with George Romero’s on-earth death-walkers.
Back in 1959, a meteorite crashed into Earth, bringing with it a type of parasite that feeds on human brains. When the first victim of the parasite is put into deep freeze, no one expects two teenagers, Chris and J.C. (Jason Lively and Steve Marshall) to inadvertently release these slug-like aliens onto their campus when they unthaw an infected man who has been cryogenically frozen since the fifties. Now with the help of a sorority girl that Chris is crushing on and an aging, cynical detective, they must stop the slugs from infecting their friends before...

Where do I even begin? First and foremost HorrorBid sprang as an idea from my obsession from collecting all things horror but mainly masks. To be even more specific, Michael Myers masks. I began around 1997 collecting what was then simply converted masks that the Don Post mask company made called simply, "The Mask". In those days mask makers would take some airbrush and a few strands of hair and redo the masks to look as close to the "hero" mask…...

First off, I have absolutely nothing to do with the artists at Trick or Treat Studios. MoreHorror is running a contest giving away one of these masks, but it's sponsored by a retailer (enter the Halloween II Michael Myers Mask give away here), and not the studio, so I feel free and clear to ramble on about my absolute love for this mask. Just look at it (pictured on the left).
My history with the shape mask goes back to when I was eleven and found a five dollar version at the mall. Yea, it was garbage and didn't last until I got home that night, but I loved it with all my black little heart. Years later I found a decent Don Post version, one of the earlier ones, and kept it on my shelf for years until my ex stored it in the garage one...

Stacked in the windows, peering out like eyeless sentinels were rows and rows of Don Post Monster Masks. No longer just two dimensional, black and white images in the back pages of Famous Monsters of Filmland Magazine, they were there, in three-dimensions, painted in their garish colors. I was at the right place, alright: The Vieux Carre Hair Shop. Inside, two gentlemen greeted me. The first one was roughly thirty; he had a fringe of dark hair circling his baldpate and was mustached. Remember Halloween in 1978, the little indy film shot by kids basically? It was pretty much the Paranormal Activity of its day as far as box office numbers are concerned (content and lasting impact are another matter). It’s an incredible feat that most low budget movies only dream of accomplishing. Still, one has to wonder how they pulled it off. Why the success?...

There are only two things I love in this great life of ours: everything, and monsters. Unfortunately for me , the modern world though has been experiencing a monster drought as of late. Well, I should say…we’ve had a good horror movie drought as of late (but I’m digressing into a giant sized rant right now). The only decent movie monsters we’ve seen in the last few years have been: The Wolfman…oh my God, that’s it, isn’t it? Just the Wolfman. I like to think back to an era I didn’t live in where monsters were the only think on kids’ minds and they just couldn’t get enough of them. From t-shirts, to model kids, and rubber Don Post masks; those freaky creatures were everywhere. And the Mecca for all of these great monstrosities was Famous Monsters of Filmland Magazine.

The date is the 31st of May, 2009. Let me just say this first and foremost; I go to a shit ton of conventions. Shit ton as in a whole lot of conventions. And believe it or not, I've never done a write-up on any of them. I've filmed plenty of videos at conventions and talked about them on podcasts and what have you, but never written an article about one.
To be perfectly honest, I've never done this because I usually only go to conventions these days to hang out with friends I haven't seen in a long time and to drink too much and end up hitting on Cerina Vincent (or being hit on by Tiffany Shepis). I couldn't care less about meeting celebrities anymore or looking through all the independent films booths. I know that makes me a heathen, but hey, I did all that for many years,...
