Opening on a soft focus into a kitchen, Margot (Michelle Williams) is busy baking something. While the light shining through the window gives the scene a cosy feeling, this seemingly perfect scenario is contrasted by the unsatisfied look on the lead’s face. Writer/Director Sarah Polley uses this interesting opening to draw viewers into Take This Waltz and question what has resulted in the unfolding scenario.
While she is abroad for work, freelance writer Margot makes a charming connection with artist and rickshaw driver, Daniel (Luke Kirby). She is upfront about being married to Lou (Seth Rogen), her loving husband of five years, although the momentary spark is troubled by the revelation that Daniel lives across the street from the couple.

Public television has held separate collective bargaining agreements with the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA for years. So, while studios and networks this fall faced the ramifications of dual Hollywood strikes, it’s been mostly business as usual at PBS.
Perhaps lost in the conversation about this most unusual fall — in which the broadcast networks tweaked and re-tweaked their schedules in light of the lengthy production stoppage — has been PBS’ ability to keep the majority of its schedule intact.
In fact, according to Sylvia Bugg, PBS’ chief programming executive and Gm of general audience programming, just one program on its fall lineup was impacted by the strikes: John Leguizamo’s “American História: The Untold History of Latinos,” which had been scheduled to premiere last month. In solidarity with the strikes, Leguizamo opted to delay the project until 2024. PBS replaced it with another docuseries, “Becoming Frida Kahlo.”

In what may be one of the most powerful and stirring episodes of the entire run of FX’s “Reservation Dogs,” the series this week took on the horror of assimilation “Indian boarding schools” — and attempt by the government in the 19th and 20th centuries to erase Native culture from the country.
It’s another dark chapter that is well known by most people with Indigenous heritage, but something that most non-Natives have either never heard about, or only have a passing knowledge of it. For “Reservation Dogs” co-creator Sterlin Harjo, there was a responsibility to tell the story right.
“We have an opportunity to tell some truths, and that’s what the show has been about — telling the truth about who we are,” Harjo says. “I just wanted to make something that represented that experience, to show people what the reality was. To show people how it must have felt,...

Restructuring
Multinational cinema operator Cineworld‘s proposed restructuring now has the backing of most of its lenders, the company said on Thursday.
The restructuring, which was announced in April, “now has the support of lenders holding and controlling approximately 99% of the legacy facilities and at least 69% of the outstanding indebtedness under the debtor-in-possession facility of Cineworld and certain of its subsidiaries,” the group said in a statement.
Cineworld Group and its subsidiaries had commenced Chapter 11 cases in the United States Bankruptcy Court in September 2022. The group now expects to emerge from the Chapter 11 cases in July and will continue to operate its cinemas as usual without interruption, it said.
The lenders have also agreed to amended and restated versions of the restructuring support agreement and the backstop commitment agreement, which were filed with the United States Bankruptcy Court.
Cineworld owns the Regal cinema chain and is the second largest movie theater operator in the world.

Lille, France — Headed by a commanding performance from Navid Mohammadzadeh, superbly shot and packing arguably the best opening scene of any series in Series Mania main competition, Navid Javidi’s “The Actor” won the Grand Prize at Series Mania on Friday night.
The top Series Mania award for the “The Actor” also proves vindication for the Festival which this year has broadened its geographical reach in an effort to discover new narrative modes and styles. Consistently subordinating narrative to mood, “The Actor” certainly wins on that score.
Main scribe John Kåre Raake (“The Quake”) and co-scribe Linn-Jeanethe Kyed (“Bø”) scooped best writing for “The Fortress,” a banner upcoming Viaplay title produced by Norway’s Maipo Film and sold by TrustNordisk, which delivers a telling political cautionary tale for our times, a chic isolationist parable thriller set in an alternative Norway which has built a wall to keep foreigners out. Montreal-based Rezolution Pictures, behind Sundance winner “Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World,” and Winnipeg-based Op Little Bird have partnered with Fremantle International on Jennifer Podemski and Hannah Moscovitch’s original drama series “Little Bird,” which is set to premiere on Crave and Aptn in Canada.
The series, which stars Darla Contois and Lisa Edelstein, follows the life of Bezhig Little Bird, a victim of the Sixties Scoop in Saskatchewan wherein First Nations children were abducted and placed in foster homes before being put up for adoption by white families.
Told in parallel timelines, “Little Bird” quickly contrasts Bezhig’s childhood with her engagement party – only this time as Esther Rosenblum, a woman in her 20s on the cusp of life, and suddenly wracked with repressed memories. Veninger, of Toronto-based pUNK Films, has recruited nine international collaborators to work on Exquisite Cadaver Project and established a set of rules that embraces available technology and speaks to the unprecedented contemporary times.

With the dust fully settled on the Academy Awards, we point our attention northward with tonight’s 2014 Canadian Screen Awards. Many of the television winners have already been announced in glitzy fashion during this Canadian Screen Week, but with baited breath, we’re more keen on seeing how the film award honors will pan out. Last year’s Tiff saw Denis Villeneuve bring not one (Prisoners), but a pair of feature films and it is the offbeat, doppelgänger delight Enemy that should reap in the top awards of the evening. Here are my predictions of who will win, who should win, and who should have been nominated in each of the most anticipated film categories.
Best Motion Picture:
The nominees are: Enemy, The Dismantlement, Empire of Dirt, The F Word, Gabrielle, The Grand Seduction, Maina, Tom at the Farm

Just a day following the conclusion of Tiff’s Canada’s Top Ten festival, many of the same films were heralded in this morning’s Canadian Screen Awards nominations. Leading the noms was Enemy, Denis Villenueve’s adaptation of Jose Saramago’s celebrated novel The Double. Its astounding 10 nominations include best picture, actor (Jake Gyllenhaal), supporting actress (former Tiff rising star and current Cronenberg muse Sarah Gadon), and director (Villeneuve).
Other Canada’s Top Ten overlapping nominees include multiple nominations for wunderkind Xavier Dolan’s nod to Hitchcock, Tom at the Farm (with eight nominations including best picture), doc Watermark, Rhymes for Young Ghouls, Gabrielle (which surprisingly was snubbed for best director), and the recently locked The F Word (which garnered a best actor nod for Daniel Radcliffe but astoundingly not a nomination for its charming lead actress Zoe Kazan).

Remember Peter Stebbings' last film, "Defendor"? Featuring Woody Harrelson in a wacky costume, the movie won people's hearts and was a smash hit at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival.
Vancouver-born Stebbings is back with "Empire of Dirt," which is set to premiere at this year's Tiff.
"Empire of Dirt" focuses on an impoverished single mother who's trying to save her teenage daughter from the streets. Also, the mother returns home and attempts to reconcile with her own mother. It's an interesting tri-level generational story, full of heartbreak and poignant moments.
Three native female protagonists -- Jennifer Podemski ("Take This Waltz"), Luke Kirby ("Take This Waltz") and fresh faces Cara Gee and Shahiyela Pourier-Eyre -- take on the lead roles.
Podemski, who also produced the film, brought the script to Stebbings while he was editing "Defendor."
You can check out "Empire of Dirt" at Tiff.

Take This Waltz (15)
(Sarah Polley, 2011, Can/Spa/Jap) Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Luke Kirby, Sarah Silverman, Jennifer Podemski. 116 mins
This is almost the opposite of a romcom: it deals with the prospect of a happy couple breaking up, as Williams is tempted away from cuddly partner Rogen by a handsome, wholesome neighbour. Which is better? The solid, stable kind of love, or the whirlwind, passionate kind? There are some irritating quirks, but on the whole it's an intelligent, truthful drama exploring guilt, regret, confusion and other grown-up emotions generally absent from the summer movie season.
The Bourne Legacy (12A)
(Tony Gilroy, 2012, Us) Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton. 135 mins
It's really the Damon legacy we're talking about here, and whether Renner can plug the Matt-shaped hole in the action franchise. He's got the right mix of acting and one-man-death-machine skills for the job, though this story of shady government operatives...

Hollywoodnews.com: The Toronto International Film Festival rolls on, with first glances at such films as Paramount’s Sundance romance “Like Crazy” and the Jennifer Garner-led homespun comedy “Butter.”
The latter had its Gala screening last night at the Roy Thompson Hall, where co-star Olivia Wilde read a message from Harvey Weinstein that took pot shots at the Tea Party and presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann, whom Weinstein (with tongue in cheek) invited to the comedy’s Iowa premiere.
“We could take some math classes in the morning to help balance the budget, brush up on the Constitution in the afternoon, play some ping-pong, and then maybe some verbal ping-pong on gay rights and women’s rights (especially the right to choose),” Weinstein said in the statement.
The crowd lapped it up. But Weinstein’s missive got the evening’s biggest laughs, which isn’t great for “Butter.
