Paxton Whitehead, the Tony-nominated British actor best known for his snooty roles on “Mad About You” and in the Rodney Dangerfield comedy “Back to School,” died Friday at age 85, according to his son, Charles Whitehead.
In the latter feature film, he memorably played Dr. Barbay, the disapproving dean of the business school who is horrified to learn that Rodney Dangerfield’s low-brow middle-aged character has bribed his way into college. Whitehead also had a recurring role on ’90s sitcom “Mad About You” as the “neighbor from hell” Hal Conway. The actor additionally guested on a number of series including “Frasier” and “Friends.”

Julian Sands is being remembered by actors and filmmakers everywhere.
After the “A Room With a View” and “Ocean’s 13” star went missing while hiking in the Mount Baldy region in San Bernardino County, hopes for Sands’ return have flooded social media.
Cassian Elwes penned, “I’ve known since Friday that my friend Julian Sands has been missing on Mt. Baldy. I’m devastated. A very close family friend who was an adventurer in everything he did. I’ve said many prayers. Life is fleeting and precious.”
Jon Cryer added, “I am hoping against hope that this will turn out to be just another one of his adventures. I’m so sorry for his family and friends going through this.”
Matthew Modine wrote, “Julian Sands is a wonderful man, husband, father, and friend to so so many. A gentle, kind soul. Keep candles burning for his safe return from the mountain he loves.

When the sad news came down this weekend that comic great Fred Willard had died, fans all across the internet looked back on some of his greatest roles. Some recalled his hysterical portrayal of Kvwn news director Ed Harken in the Anchorman films, while others remembered travel agent Ron Albertson in Waiting For Guffman, Grandpa Frank Dunphy on Modern Family and folk music manager Mike Lafontaine in A Mighty Wind.
It was his work in the 2000 Christopher Guest mockumentary Best In Show, however, that generated the most conversation, and with good reason.

Jeremy Irons, best known as Scar in the animated Lion King movie, and current cast member of Watchmen on HBO, has been cast in an upcoming biopic about “horse trainer Sir Henry Cecil, who fought years of failure and illness to make Frankel the greatest champion racehorse of all time, unbeaten in all 14 starts, and bowing out with an emotional victory in front of a capacity crowd at the Champion Stakes at Ascot Racecourse.”
Irons will produce the film written by Jim Piddock, with director Ron Scalpello (Bobby) at the helm. This sounds like it could be an interesting and inspirational movie if done well. Irons is a fantastic actor who could bring a real dignity to the role. Does this sound interesting to you?

A few years ago, in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the death of influential film critic Pauline Kael, I wrote the following:
“I think (Kael) did a lot to expose the truth… that directors, writers and actors who often work awfully close to the surface may still have subterranean levels of achievement or purpose or commentary that they themselves may be least qualified to articulate. It’s what’s behind her disdain for Antonioni’s pontificating at the Cannes film festival; it’s what behind the high percentage of uselessness of proliferating DVD commentaries in which we get to hear every dull anecdote, redundant explication of plot development and any other inanity that strikes the director of the latest Jennifer Aniston rom-com to blurt out breathlessly; and it is what’s behind a director like Eli Roth, who tailors the subtext of something like Hostel Part II almost as...

The world of film is obviously as broad and far-reaching as it could be, and no matter how much we might feel that certain films are so good that everyone should like them, people have differing tastes. I might think My Dinner with Andre is easily one of the best films there is, despite the fact that most people can’t finish it. Virtually every list of the best films ever includes Casablanca somewhere close to the top, but I agree with the cast and crew in thinking that it isn’t really anything special. Such is life.
But, if you don’t have Waiting for Guffman, or Best in Show, or both, on your list of favorite movies, I just don’t get you.
Christopher Guest‘s mockumentary films (which also include A Mighty Wind, and For Your Consideration – which are both good, but not nearly as solid) all include familiar faces,...

Owen Harris’ directorial debut Kill Your Friends has premiered a new trailer today, taking you into the dark and twisted mind of Nicholas Hoult’s seedy A&R (artists and repertoire) man, Steven Stelfox.
Part American Pyscho, part Wolf of Wall Street, Stelfox’s general irreverence for the world around him is captured brilliantly in the latest sizzle reel, as Hoult’s businessman embarks on a power-mongering – and seemingly bloodthirsty – climb to the top of the British music scene of the mid-90s.
Thanks in large part to genre-defining hits from Blur, The Stone Roses, Oasis and the like, the industry was enjoying a historic high before the turn of the millennium, and those themes of fame and excess will underpin Hoult’s burning desire to continue his winning streak.
Lifted from John Niven’s novel of the same name, Kill Your Friends also stars James Corden, Tom Riley, Joseph Malwe,...

The music industry ain't pretty. It's a notion that's explored in "Kill Your Friends," bringing an almost "American Psycho" vibe to the story of one young man trying to make his mark on the '90s "Cool Britannia" scene that yielded Oasis, Radiohead and Blur. London, 1997; the British music industry is on a winning streak. Britpop bands Blur, Oasis, Radiohead rule the airwaves and Cool Britannia.

Kill Your Friends is adapted from John Niven’s 2009 novel. It’s a late Nineties black comedy about the last hurrahs of post-Britpop record labels before the internet came along and devalued everything they’d built their expense accounts on. The book is to the music industry what Brett Easton Ellis’s American Psycho is to Wall Street. In so much that taking a life can be justified if winning is all and losing will get your fired.
Leading the film is Nicholas Hoult. He plays Stelfox – the ruthless and ambitious record company executive that lacks any morals or love of music. He simply craves success. Paradoxically, this has served him well to date, but the lack of a work ethic or plan is catching up with him.

Confidence was a preference for the habitual participants of what was known in the '90s as Britpop. And for Nicholas Hoult's character in Kill Your Friends, that confidence is stoked by large quantities of white powder and not a little violence. How far will his A&R man Steven Stelfox go to find the next Oasis? Have a look at the latest trailer to get an idea.Adapted by John Niven from his own 2008 novel, Kill Your Friends finds 27-year-old Stelfox carving out a career for himself in the London music industry; zigzagging around the world in search of the next massive hit (powered by greed and huge snorts of Colombian marching powder); and doing almost anything for that elusive new sensation, even if it means cutting a few throats in the non-figurative sense.Owen Harris (Holy Flying Circus, Black Mirror) is here directing his first feature film.

Have a look at the first - quite sweary - teaser trailer to get an idea.Adapted by John Niven from his own 2008 novel, Kill Your Friends finds 27-year-old Stelfox carving out a career for himself in the London music industry; zigzagging around the world in search of the next massive hit (powered by greed and huge snorts of Colombian marching powder); and doing almost anything for that elusive new sensation, even if it means cutting a few throats in the non-figurative sense.Owen Harris (Holy Flying Circus, Black Mirror) is here directing his first feature film.

Actor-filmmaker Christopher Guest has revolutionized the "mockumentary" format, satirizing rock spectacle (This Is Spinal Tap), stage musicals (Waiting for Guffman), dog shows (Best in Show) and folk music (A Mighty Wind). For his latest project, he's teamed with Netflix to poke fun at a more obscure topic: the grueling grind of mascot competitions. The streaming service announced Mascots on Tuesday, Deadline reports, teasing the movie with a poster outlining the basic plot.

Nine years after his last film, legendary mockumentary filmmaker Christopher Guest ("Best in Show," "Waiting for Huffman") is returning to direct a new film and is doing it with the help of Netflix.
The streaming service made the announcement in a tweet, confirming this Netflix Original film will be titled "Mascots" and will premiere exclusively on the service in 2016. The film promises the following:
"Welcome to all the drama, intrigue and occasional excitement of the 8th World Mascot Association Championships, where a group of 'unusual' men and women, with big heads and furry suits, compete to win the prestigious Gold Fluffy Award and be crowned best mascot in the world."
No doubt cutting jokes about the cutthroat world of profesional flurries will ensue. How many Guest regulars like Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Fred Willard, Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy and Jim Piddock might show up at this point is unknown. 3

A movie set in the world of '90s Britpop? That's right up our alley, so we'll be playing close attention to the provocatively-titled "Kill Your Friends." Nicholas Hoult and Jim Piddock will star in the adaptation of the novel by John Niven, that follows "an A&R man who goes to extremes to find the next hit." Here's the Amazon book synopsis: As the twentieth century breathes its very last, with Britpop at its zenith, twenty-seven-year-old A&R man Steven Stelfox is slashing and burning his way through London’s music industry. Blithely crisscrossing the globe in search of the next megahit—fueled by greed and inhuman quantities of cocaine—Stelfox freely indulges in an unending orgy of self-gratification. But the industry is changing fast and the hits are drying up, and the only way he’s going to salvage his sagging career is by taking the idea of “cutthroat” to murderous new levels.

HBO's "Family Tree" has been cut down. The freshman comedy series created by Christopher Guest and Jim Piddock and starring Chris O'Dowd will not be getting a second season, according to various published reports the network has confirmed to HitFix. Complications surrounding HBO's co-producing deal with the BBC on the series reportedly contributed to the network's decision not to move forward. Also ending its run after a single season will be "Hello Ladies" starring Stephen Merchant, though HBO has agreed to air a special for that comedy series to wrap things up, similar to the send-off they gave to Ricky Gervais'...

HBO has decided not to move ahead with new seasons of Hello Ladies and Family Tree, two comedies that launched last year to favorable reviews but failed to capture the zeitgeist like Girls.
Hello Ladies was adapted by Stephen Merchant’s stand-up show of the same name. It starred the comedian as an Englishman looking for love in L.A. The series will end with a special.
Family Tree is a documentary-style comedy from Christopher Guest and Jim Piddock. It bowed in May and starred Chris O’Dowd as a young man investigating his lineage.
