During the same interview where he defended the Warner Bros. awards season flop “Joker: Folie a Deux,” Oscar-winning director Quentin Tarantino also expressed a strong disinterest in the studio’s top contender, “Dune: Part Two.”
Speaking to Bret Easton Ellis during an interview with Ellis for the writer’s podcast, Tarantino said he had already watched “Dune” adapted for the screen by David Lynch.
“I don’t need to see that story again,” Tarantino said when asked about Denis Villeneuve’s screen adaptations of Frank Herbert’s science-fiction novel. “I don’t need to see spice worms. I don’t need to see a movie that says the word ‘Spice’ so dramatically.”
The “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” director added that Hollywood’s reliance on reboots and remakes was not something he found interesting as an audience member.

“Joker: Folie à Deux” is a movie directed by Todd Phillips starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. With Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Harry Lawtey.
Todd Phillips set out to create a film that defies traditional genres, leaving viewers in a state of emotional turmoil similar to that of Arthur Fleck: teetering on the brink of despair and always flirting with utter degradation. He achieves this, but the outcome is not always pleasant or easy to digest.
“Joker: Folie à Deux” shines brightly at times: it is technically well-crafted, with complete creative freedom, and carries a message that is as profound as it is cynical and overwhelming. This film will neither appeal to everyone nor has it been well-received by the majority, as “Joker: Folie à Deux” is not intended to be an enjoyable experience; it aims to degrade Arthur in Arkham to his ultimate downfall.

Joaquin Phoenix might just be the master architect of one of the best comic book adaptations of all time. With his 2019 film Joker, Phoenix began a silent revolution, and like the streets of Gotham, a splintering rage consumed the fans when the awaited sequel failed to perform well. In many ways, the events of Joker: Folie à Deux mirrored the upsetting downfall of the actor in the real world.
Phoenix was expected to deliver another masterpiece, especially considering how accurately he understood and captured the unbridled insanity of the character. But Todd Phillips, the director extraordinaire, did not visualize a world away from the saturated Batman saga. He simply picked up the script of Martin Scorsese’s 1982 film The King of Comedy and gave it a good dust-off.

Famed director Quentin Tarantino is a vocal supporter of the Todd Phillips sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux.” In a recent podcast, Tarantino spoke enthusiastically about the film even as it has struggled at the box office compared to the first “Joker.” Tarantino praised Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as “one of the best” he’s seen. He also drew comparisons between the sequel and Oliver Stone’s “Natural Born Killers.”
Tarantino suggested Phillips directed “Folie à Deux” in the spirit of the Joker character. “The entire concept, even him spending the studio’s money – he’s spending it like the Joker would spend it,” Tarantino said. This subversive approach may explain the film’s commercial underperformance, which has earned just over $200 million globally so far compared to the first film’s $1 billion plus.
Francis Ford Coppola also praised Phillips for “staying one step ahead of the audience.” However, Paul Schrader, who...

Quentin Tarantino was "tremendously" impressed by 'Joker: Folie a Deux'.The 'Reservoir Dogs' moviemaker has admitted he wasn't sure what to expect when he went to see the comic book film - which features Joaquin Phoenix opposite pop star Lady Gaga - but he found he was "caught up" in the story and the musical numbers.Speaking on 'The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast', Tarantino said of the film: "I really, really liked it, really. A lot. Like, tremendously, and I went to see it expecting to be impressed by the filmmaking. But I thought it was going to be an arms-length, intellectual exercise that ultimately I wouldn’t think worked like a movie, but that I would appreciate it for what it is. "And I’m just nihilistic enough to kind of enjoy a movie that doesn’t quite work as a movie or that’s like a big, giant mess to some degree.

Unlike its predecessor, Joker: Folie à Deux has brutally failed to fare between both critics and general audiences, with a minority still standing up in praise for it. Turns out, one of Hollywood’s most renowned veterans, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino is also included in the list of people who seemed to have “really, really liked it, really. A lot. Like, tremendously.”

To say the least, the director, who is famed for having tamed pieces like Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill film series, found himself discovering and praising influences of a script he wrote 30 years ago in Joker 2. But the best part about Tarantino’s review is his theory in one statement about the director’s approach to helming this piece: “Todd Phillips is the Joker.”

Quentin Tarantino stands alone as an auteur with praise for Todd Phillips’ box-office disaster “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Where Paul Schrader couldn’t get through more than 25 minutes of the widely panned sequel, now sputtering out in theaters and headed to VOD, Tarantino adores Phillips’ anti-paean to comic book lovers, movie audiences, and fans of the first film.
Appearing on the “Bret Easton Ellis” podcast (via World of Reel), Tarantino praised Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as one of the greatest he’s ever seen. Meanwhile, “Joker 2” continues to tank in theaters, grossing just over $201 million worldwide. Globally, the 2019 original “Joker” grossed more than $1 billion.

Oftentimes, studio interference hinders the quality of the final product, and Warner Bros. has been infamous for impending with the director’s vision, especially in the now-defunct Dceu. On the flip side, giving the director the full creative freedom has often led to great returns, with Todd Phillips’ Joker being one of the biggest examples.

Quentin Tarantino may no longer be making The Movie Critic as his 10th and final film, but the Hollywood auteur became one when he gave two thumbs up to Todd Phillips’ antihero musical Joker: Folie à Deux during a podcast appearance.

Joker: Folie à Deux, the follow-up to 2019’s Oscar-winning Joker, has become one of the biggest box-office bombs in modern movie histoy. But despite the terrible critical and commercial reception that cost Warner Bros. somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 million during its theatrical run, Joker believers have gained an ally in the form of Quentin Tarantino.

Quentin Tarantino has never been shy about shooting straight from the hip as far as his opinions are considered, whether it be praising his favorite movies of all time or telling off pearl-clutchers like Jan who think his violent films are directly responsible for all the ills of society. His eclectic tastes have intrigued and confounded fans and fellow filmmakers alike over the years, so nothing he says at this juncture should ever feel like a surprise. There’s another person who is going to do something. … I can’t imagine what it would be if we didn’t have Heath Ledger’s performance in that film, right?”

Heath Ledger died months before The Dark Knight arrived in theaters. As a result, the actor never got to see the response to his performance as The Joker or receive the "Best Supporting Actor" Oscar, which he was posthumously awarded the following year.
It's impossible to imagine anyone else playing the Clown Prince of Crime in that movie as Ledger has become nothing short of iconic as a result of his incredible performance.
However, Joker star Joaquin Phoenix - who won an Oscar for his portrayal of the character in the 2019 movie - has now revealed that Christopher Nolan approached him for the role that ultimately went to Ledger.
Explaining that he "wasn't ready" at the time, Phoenix said, "I talked to Chris Nolan about “The Dark Knight” and that didn’t happen for whatever reason, I wasn’t ready then...I can’t imagine what it would be if...

Joker 2 Box Office (Worldwide): Crosses A Major Milestone ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga’s Joker: Folie a Deux is still fighting the odds and has finally reached a major milestone at the global box office. Joker 2 experienced a harsh drop in the overseas markets, and with the release of Venom 3, it has been further affected. This is a lost cause at the box office, and there is hardly any chance it will recover and start doing well. In the next month, a couple of more big-budget films will be released, and then it will be game over for this Todd Phillips directorial.
Joker 2 had a reported budget between $190 million and $200 million. It was one of the most anticipated comic book films of the year after Deadpool & Wolverine. It is underperforming at the cinemas, and seeing that the makers have decided on an early digital release for the film.

On Sunday, October 27, 2024, Clint Eastwood will premiere his fortieth feature directorial effort, "Juror #2," at the American Film Institute Festival. This feels like a landmark number. It's certainly a landmark achievement, given that Eastwood is 94 years old, an age at which most people are interred. So it's frankly despicable that Warner Bros-Discovery, headed by noted enemy of cinema David Zaslav, has chosen to unceremoniously dump "Juror #2" on 50 screens over its opening weekend, with no plans for expansion or an awards campaign.
While it's possible the film is not, in the eyes of its studio, an awards contender, it has a commercially viable hook (as evidenced by its compelling trailer) and a killer cast headed up by Nicholas Hoult. Moreover, it's a film by Clint Eastwood, a man whose films have earned WB loads of money over the last 50-plus years. He's had an office on the lot for nearly as long,...

You can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs, but in the world of filmmaking, sometimes those eggs never get cracked at all. The much-anticipated biopic about retired professional wrestler Hulk Hogan, featuring Chris Hemsworth, seemed set for success. With a talented lineup of writers and producers, fans were eager to see how the story of this iconic wrestler would come to life on screen. Unfortunately, in a disappointing twist, the project has been permanently shelved.

David O. Selznick was a demanding producer who often interrupted pitches and then bullied filmmakers once their movies started shooting. I wonder how impresarios of his era — Selznick, Sam Goldwyn or Darryl F. Zanuck — would have coped with the unruly YouTubers, TikTokers, Instagrammers or superstar influencers crowding today’s marketplace.
Or how they’d deal with esteemed filmmakers like Alfonso Cuarón, who today are re-inventing and re-structuring their craft to fit the ecocentrics of streamerville?
In a maze of memos, Selznick told George Cukor, then King Vidor, that they lacked the pizzazz to turn Gone With The Wind into a hit. Would he have instructed Passthatpuss to trim his act or Todd Phillips to pull the tunes from Joker 2?
The bottom line, I suppose, is that pop culture has moved to a new rhythm and only sentimentalists worry about the creative debris along the way.

Christopher Nolan has been credited with making one of the most celebrated versions of The Joker, something that still hasn’t been followed up to this day. However, there was a lot of fan backlash for some decisions that Nolan made for the character, either from fans or from Warner Brothers. themselves.

One of the decisions that Nolan and the team made for the story of the sequel was to forgo the origin of The Joker, which was reportedly something that Warner Brothers pushed back on. Nolan’s decisions bore fruit in the end, but it was definitely something that was still suspect for the studio, despite the success of Batman Begins.

Tm & © DC When director Todd Phillips decided to make his sequel to Joker a musical, Lady Gaga was a natural first choice for the role of Harley Quinn. After all, Gaga possesses both the vocal prowess and edgy persona necessary to pull off the character. But even though that was working in her favor, Gaga said she felt like she needed to find a new voice for her songs in the film — a voice that would sound less like Lady Gaga and more like Harley Quinn. Gaga’s co-star, Joaquin Phoenix, said it was amazing to watch her transform her voice and persona to fit the role. (Click on the media bar below...

While this year has had its fair share of surprising flops, Joker: Folie à Deux is probably one of the more surprising ones. It had the hype of Lady Gaga taking on the role of Harley Quinn and the musical twist potentially lent itself to exploring interesting territory as an R-rated sequel to a notorious comic book villain. The movie’s response would become incredibly underwhelming, and Blu-ray.com has announced that Warner Bros. is already set to release the film’s 4K Blu-ray and standard Blu-ray release on December 17. The digital release is going to be even sooner, with a recent Variety report on the film’s box office woes revealing WB is dumping it on digital early – October 29 – in the hopes of recouping some of its $200 million investment.
Joker: Folie à Deux stars Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan, and Harry Lawtey. The description reads, “Joker: Folie À Deux...

Over the years, David Howard Thornton has garnered quite a cult following for his work in horror. However, it looks like the star wants a chance to dive into the supervillain genre.

The latest update from Christopher Nolan’s next film after Oppenheimer sounds very promising. Spider-Man fame Tom Holland is reportedly in talks to star alongside Matt Damon in the new film. While the theme and plot of the new film are kept tightly under wraps, Nolan earlier this year expressed his interest in making a horror film.

Fans have speculated that the Interstellar director has finally come up with a “really exceptional idea” for his horror film. While Nolan is yet to make a full-fledged horror film, he has included horror elements in his films including Christian Bale’s Batman Begins and his war film Dunkirk.

The last five years have been transformative for cinema, between the impact of Covid, the streaming revolution, and the rise of AI technology. Which is exactly why Empire decided to poll an array of top filmmakers in Hollywood – and beyond – on what exactly is going on in the industry, and what it all means for the movies. The result is a major new article – available to read in full in our Mickey 17 issue (order here).
One of the hottest topics is the encroachment of AI, with the industry still figuring out how it could, should – or should not – be used in moviemaking. “It is not creative,” says Gina Prince-Bythewood, director of The Woman King. “It just takes from others’ creativity.” Sofia Coppola – director of Priscilla and Lost In Translation – questions its capabilities beyond creating mere imagery: “It can be helpful, but I think you need a heart and soul to make art.

It wasn’t an exciting weekend overall at the box office, but Sean Baker and his new film “Anora” sparked a fire in limited release with the best platform opening in over a year. Read on for the weekend box office report.
The big release this weekend was Paramount Pictures’ horror sequel “Smile 2,” opening in 3,619 theaters after building up strong reviews with 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. The original “Smile” (2022) was right behind it in terms of reviews, and it opened with $22.6 million, going on to $105.9 million domestic and even more overseas. Because of that huge success, “Smile 2” was expected to do better, but it just barely surpassed the opening of the original.
First, “Smile 2” racked up $2.5 million in Thursday previews, leading to a $9.5 million on Friday, including those previews. It ended up making an estimated $23 million over the three-day weekend, which is only slightly higher than the opening for the first movie.

While 2019 saw the monumental success of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019) becoming the highest grossing movie of all time, it was a spinoff of the iconic Batman villain that became the most profitable film of that year with its miniscule budget of $65 million being matched with a worldwide run of over $1.07 billion. ‘Joker’ (2019) was the talk of the cinema community as it was the first r- rated comic book film to receive such attention and profit and has since been in the minds of cinema enthusiasts and normal movie goers alike. As any successful movie goes in modern times, a sequel had to come and it did this past weekend with ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ (2024). With Todd Phillips returning as the director and Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role as the titular character, we see another venture into a far more real and depressing look at Gotham than any other interpretation of it has shown.

When Todd Phillips decided to make 'Joker: Folie à Deux', a sequel to his 2019 hit ‘Joker’, he didn’t settle for the expected. Instead, Phillips chose to transform the film into a jukebox musical—an audacious move for a franchise that built its identity around dark psychological realism. Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, this sequel had immense potential, with its creative risks hinting at something truly groundbreaking. But despite its high production value and powerful performances, the film has struggled both critically and financially, calling into question whether it was a necessary addition to the Joker narrative. Joker 2 Box Office (China): Latest Update( Photo Credit – YouTube )
While Art the Clown from Terrifier 3 is entertaining the viewers despite the lack of big stars, Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix fail to catch people’s eyes. Joker: Folie a Deux’s last hope was China, but it seems the movie is not doing so well there as well. Joker 2 is even below the re-release collections of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Scroll below for more.
Besides Terrifier 3, Smile 2 has created much buzz with its early reviews and the Thursday previews. It will surely be in the top three of the domestic box office chart. The Wild Robot and even Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which was released in early September, have been doing better than Todd Phillips’ sequel. The makers have reportedly decided to release the film on digital platforms in less than a month of its theatrical release.

Oscar-winning “Joker” composer Hildur Gudnadottir played an even more crucial role on “Joker: “Folie à Deux,” musically bridging the harsh reality of Arthur/Joker’s (Joaquin Phoenix) imprisonment in Arkham State Hospital with the escapist classic pop music that he imagines singing with or without Lee/Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga).
“This was quite an interesting development, musically, from the first one where the songs were important to Arthur for him to connect to the outside world as an observer,” Gudnadottir told IndieWire. “But this time around, he’s more like a participant and starts singing the songs. So he has different musical faces that go with his different personalities as Arthur and Joker. So it was definitely a harder musical jigsaw puzzle to try to make [score and songs] work together and not against each other.”

Todd Phillips’ 2019 film Joker is largely considered to be a masterpiece, it aptly explored the destructive character of Gotham’s most nefarious villain. The film’s sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux represented the iconic character played by Joaquin Phoenix joined by his equally unstable lover portrayed by Lady Gaga.
However, the new movie received mixed responses from fans and critics who were unamused by the several creative liberties taken by the director. One incident allegedly involved a movie-goer setting a chair on fire in protest during the screening. Although his protest had nothing to do with the film, but the lead actress’s connection to Brazil.

Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix will never hear the end of fans whining about how underwhelming Joker: Folie à Deux was. Having achieved so much with the initial release in 2019, Phillips probably thought he could get away with adding an unusual and unexpected twist to the sequel. But things simply haven’t worked out in his favor this time.

It has been just over two weeks since the movie’s release, and the fact that the Joker’s story was transformed into a musical has backfired big time! Things are getting so out of hand that Warner Bros. is about to add the movie to streaming platforms to alleviate the damage that it might endure during its theatrical run. But what’s worse is other small-budget films are doing far better than Joker: Folie à Deux.
