“There will soon be nothing more than self-communicating zombies, whose lone umbilical relay will be their own feedback image – electronic avatars of dead shadows perpetually retelling their own story.” —Jean Baudrillard in Telemorphosis Around 1979 the American filmmaker Robert Kramer and the French schizo-analyst Félix Guattari started working together on a film about two Italian fugitives from the Italian Autonomia Movement, Latitante. The film, which was to star Pier Paolo Pasolini's regular actress Laura Betti, was meant to be a sort of first person collective reflection on the finitude and fragility of the body, “opposing the enormous weight of things-as-they-are, systematically defined by vast power.” A film about the intimacy of resistance. Somewhere along the way the film morphed into a significantly different creature, the science fiction flick A Love of Uiq, a formal shift (sub)consciously informed by the wider political changes taking place off screen: from the grand...

Prince George had a party fit for a king on Tuesday. Celebrated by his grandparents, godparents and, to top it off, his great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth - as well as uncle Prince Harry - the royal infant marked his first birthday in style at the Kensington Palace home of his parents, William and Kate. Guests had all arrived by 4 p.m. London time when the Queen was whisked in from Kensington High Street's entrance. Those waiting for her inside the newly refurbished home were grandparents Carole and Michael Middleton and their children, Pippa and James, and godparents Zara and Mike Phillips and their daughter Mia,...

Wales’ great start helped them hold off a courageous Italian fightback in the opening game of the Six Nations in Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium today.
First-half tries from backs Alex Cuthbert and Scott Williams, combined with some very neat kicking from full-back Leigh Halfpenny had the reigning champions 17-3 ahead at the break, as they commenced their quest for a three-in-a-row in the Northern Hemisphere’s premier annual rugby competition.
However, Italy fought back in the second half with an early try from debutant and Rbs Six Nations Man of the Match Michele Campagnaro.
Walses looked comfortable at 60 minutes, and Gatland made a raft of changes, presumably resting players before next week’s crucial clash with Ireland in Dublin.

Nicolas Winding Refn's "Only God Forgives" was booed after it debuted at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, and the jeers haven't really let up in the months since.
Out now in limited release and via on demand services, Refn's reunion with "Drive" star Ryan Gosling has been skewered by critics to the tune of just a 33 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. ("Drive," by comparison, received a 93-percent rating on the review aggregation site.)
"When people love or hate your films, it's the only time you've actually penetrated," Refn told HuffPost Live in a recent interview. "That was like the whole point of making films: You're meant to react to it. If everybody likes it -- which, of course, is great -- it's the same thing as everybody hating it. Of course it's more pleasurable if everybody likes it -- because being degraded and hated by everyone is a terrible emotion...

Continuing their masterful efforts to promote Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" (September 14) ahead of its showings in Venice and Toronto, the Weinstein Co. shared the film again at a single benefit screening on August 16 at Chicago's Music Box Theatre (the last 70 mm facility in the Chicago area). It may be the first and last time Chicagoans are able to see the film it its 70mm form, and - as the Chicago Tribune's Michael Philips puts it - "Once is Not Enough for 'The Master.'" There's a chance the Music Box will screen it again in 70mm around the holidays, according to the Weinstein's Eric Lomis. So who else will get to see the film in 70mm? Lomis tells Phillips that audiences in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, Washington D.C. and Austin, Texas are the lucky ones. Minneapolis, Denver and Ann Arbor, Michigan are also possibilities for 70mm runs.

With the hangovers of Cardiff now dulled and replaced with warm glow of satisfaction, now is a good time to have a look back at who impressed in this year’s Six nations and can justifiable bask in the public’s admiration as the rose tinted glasses of history beckon.
One paper this week said this was a Six Nations that left more questions than answers and it would be right. Where does Andy Robinson go from here? Will Italy ever have decent half backs again? How good can England be? Can Wales go on and beat the Southern Hemisphere sides? Why do France still go from fabulous to farce? And are there any more tighthead props in Ireland?...

Wales continued their quest for the Grand Slam whilst Italy were desperate to avoid another wooden spoon in Cardiff on Saturday.Let us know what you thought of the game either in the comments below or on Twitter @Ballintouch
Wales had retained as much of the line up from their last match as possible with Justin Tipuric making his first start in the place of the injured Sam Warburton. Italy made a raft of changes after their disappointing loss last time out to Ireland, with Kris Burton taking back the ten shirt from the less than impressive Botes.
Italy, clearly incensed by a less than satisfying outing last time were clearly keen to deny Wales any periods of quick ball, setting to at the coalface as is their way. With Wales in the unique position of favourites for this match at Twickenham, all the talk was about the callowness of the starting England side and the size of the Welsh backline.
It was the gigantic George North who almost drew first blood, two scything runs cutting the England defence to pieces and taking the Welsh into the English 22. Unlike the Irish in the earlier game of the day, Wales were in no mood to start slowly.

All the talk was predictably about the World Cup quarter-final between these two sides that was won by the Welsh and led to their failed semi-final effort against France. The Irish side seemed to select as many as possible from those still available, the absence of Brian O’Driscoll through injury being the most notable. His replacement Keith Earls had also dropped out of the team so Fergus McFadden had all the pressure of the number 13 shirt to deal with.

In League Together
Reigning Premiership champions Saracens this week announced a link up with Wigan Warriors, the current rugby league Challenge Cup holders and last years Super League Grand Final winners that will see them sharing ideas, resources and players.
The relationship blossomed on the back of discussions between the two clubs that resulted in England international Joel Tomkins switching codes after the London based club bought out the four remaining years of his Wigan contract for a reported £250,000.
With the resultant cash, Wigan were able to secure Tomkins’ younger brother Sam on a lucrative new contract believed to be worth £200,000 a year until 2016 for the 22 year old who has become one of the biggest names in the sport, and has been much coveted by many within both union and league.

Duffy has reportedly split from her boyfriend Mike Phillips for the second time this year. The soul singer has made a "final" decision over her relationship with the Welsh rugby player, the Mail on Sunday reports. "It's sad, but it's all over," a supposed friend said. "Mike and Duffy went through a rough patch in May but they worked through it and spent the summer together between London and Wales." Reports earlier this year claimed that the couple, who had been together for more than two years, had separated amicably. The source explained: "We were all hoping (more)...

The Well, Well, Well'singer - who had been in a relationship with 29-year-old rugby player since September 2009 - reportedly broke up with the sportsman while he was in New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup earlier this month because they never get to see each other. The split comes after the pair first broke up in May but quickly reconciled. A friend told the Mail on Sunday newspaper: 'It's sad but it's all over. It’s the game no one wants to play in. Ultimately it doesn’t mean much; it is just a badge, to finish on a high despite the looming shadow of Sunday’s Final reminding those involved of what could have been. But on Friday one of these sides will be deemed “third best team in the world”.
On paper it doesn’t sound bad, being third best considering there are plenty more teams below you in the pecking order. But the wounds are still too raw either both teams to appreciate that fact, the healing effect of time yet to be given a chance to soothe.
Both sides could feasibly have been playing two days later and both will feel aggrieved not to be there. The Welsh arguably have a greater justification to be annoyed, given the performance they put in against the French considering they went an hour...

The anticipation had been simmering all week, coming to the boil on Saturday and regardless of form, the look in the eyes of both teams said it all. Passion was palatable during the Anthems, the coverage showing an absolutely packed Millenium Stadium back in Cardiff of Welshmen willing their boys on.
The kick-off forced France to put the ball out immediately, prompting the Welsh to maul the resulting lineout with alarming speed to within ten metres of the French line before errors dampened this effort. France responded with vigour, putting in several similarly determined drives into the oppositions half before a lack of precision (front rows trying to pass) ceased any opportunity.
After five minutes James Hook was given the opportunity to score the first points of the day from inside the French 22. Despite been next to the touchline, he curled it through the posts beautifully.

With Wales playing their first Rwc Semi-Final since 1987 against the troubled and precocious French, the winner will take their seat at the top table of world rugby against one of Australia and New Zealand on Sunday 23rd October in the World Cup Final.
Momentum. A key word bandied around rugby circles, but what does it mean? At its most basic level, you need momentum to go forward. In a rugby context that could be a tackle, a scrum, a maul. But it’s not just a physical act; it can also be a state of mind. And it is something Wales have in bucket loads at this very moment, something none of their contenders for rugby’s crown can claim to have.

Rising at an hour so unfamiliar, with the sun yet to rise and a slight crispness to the air, the first 6am start of the weekend felt a little bit like Christmas. Walking into the living room to find the floor bare of presents was a slight disappointment, but this was quickly made up by what these two teams gave us in the first quarter-final of the weekend.
Both teams started with an unbelievable ferociousness, turnover ball in their own half leading to Wales’ Jamie Roberts almost shattering Donnacha O’Callaghan when he tried to make a tackle on the Welshman. Just inches short it was no surprise that it was record try scorer Shane Williams who managed to squirm over between his opposite number and the touchline for the opening score, Rhys Priestland adding the extras.

From the time I was a kid, I remember watching Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel review the latest movies on TV as the highlight of my viewing week. After Siskel’s death in 1999, Richard Roeper joined Ebert, and although the chemistry wasn’t quite the same, I had great fun watching the two of them together until, sadly, Ebert’s voice was taken by cancer. Even then, Roeper continued the show with a variety of guest hosts (including, at different times, Jay Leno and Kevin Smith, resulting in a newspaper headline that read, “Jay and Silent Bob”), until Roeper was ultimately sacked by Disney after a drop in ratings and a desire for them to attract a younger, more hip presenting duo to attract a more populist audience.

The Duchess of Cambridge had plenty to see during her very first trip to the U.S. With the help of private helicopters and Prince William, she managed to cover a lot of territory during her three-day stay. Critics gave Mel Gibson's 'Edge Of Darkness' movie really good reviews. Warner Bros. Pictures has unleashed its new Mel Gibson thriller movie, "Edge of Darkness" today, and the top movie critics seem to think it's pretty damn good. It mostly got Bs across the board and only two Cs. It stars: Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, Shawn Roberts, Bojana Novakovic, Frank Grillo, and Gbenga Akinnagbe. Sam Allis from the Boston Globe gave it a B-. He said, "(Mel Gibson) remains a likable man with a natural screen presence." Michael Philips over at the Chicago Tribune gave it a B rating. He said, "conflicted but entertaining."...

Top movie critics give 'When In Rome' movie poor reviews. Touchstone pictures has released its new comedy, "When In Rome" today, which stars one of my favorite actresses, Kristen Bell. However, it has gotten some pretty poor reviews from top movie critics. It got nothing but Ds and Cs from them, but I'll still go and see it. It looks pretty funny. It also stars: Josh Duhamel, Will Arnett, Alexis Dziena, Jon Heder, Dax Shepard, Kate Micucci, Bobby Moynihan, Danny DeVito, and Anjelica Huston. Janice Page over at the Boston Globe gave it a D. She said it was, "predictably charmless and forgettable." Michael Philips from the Chicago Tribune gave it a D +. He stated, "Certain scenes in When in Rome signify nothing less than the death of screen slapstick."...

Duffy is dating a Welsh rugby star. The 'Mercy' singer is reportedly smitten with Mike Phillips, 27, but his pals claim he is only interested in following in the footsteps of Wales teammate Gavin Henson - who is in a long-term relationship with Charlotte Church - by having a famous girlfriend. A source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "Mike and Duffy went for their second date this week and they have fallen for each other. "Mike got her number from his agent a couple of weeks ago and texted her. "It's like Gavin and Charlotte - he wants to raise his profile and fancied Duffy so thought he'd try his luck. As soon as she agreed to a date,...

Beauty, brains and thoughtful insight can exist in the same package. But let's face it: That's pretty hard to find. When Disney's ABC Media Productions announced last summer that it was bringing in younger (and coincidentally, prettier) hosts for the long-running At the Movies, it touted the move as one that would usher in "the next generation of the series."...

Editors Note: Nick Allen interviewed Rian Johnson back in November 2008, because The Brothers Bloom was originally set to release in December 2008.
Rian Johnson is my friend. Considering my interview skills were a bit rusty, (the last “celebrity” I interviewed was the keyboardist of Harry Potter rock group, Harry and the Potters), I was a bit intimidated by the idea of asking Rian Johnson questions. He is the writer-director behind indie-classic Brick and has now worked with Oscar nominated and winning actors/actresses in The Brothers Bloom. However, the ego I assumed he would (rightfully) have was nonexistent. The dialogue between the us was natural, somewhat professional, and at times egregiously nerdy. He fielded my odd questions and welcomed me into the world of The Brothers Bloom like a friend. In fact, Johnson’s amicability made my shy wave to critic Michael Philips (who had interviewed him before me) more of a celebrity-like scenario.
