Getting into the 96th Academy Awards has been complicated by the security measures meant to keep pro-Palestinian protesters at a distance. Sources who are waiting to get in said they’ve been stymied. “The entrance of the Oscars has been shut down,” said a source in a tux. “Hundreds of people are stuck.”

Exclusive: After making all five episodes available on Tuesday, Marvel Studios’ Echo has premiered at No. 1 on both the Disney+ and Hulu platforms. The series marked several firsts for a Marvel show: the first TV-ma series developed at the studio, the first time every episode was available to subscribers at once and the first time a whole Marvel series has been available on both platforms at the same time.
It’s also the first show under the Marvel Spotlight banner, which the studio describes as a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity. While the studio hasn’t put out numbers, Echo is doing better than some of the consistently top-performing titles.

Vincent Gallo and his new film The Policeman are being scrutinized by SAG-AFTRA following the emergence of misconduct complaints against Gallo by multiple female actors, Deadline has confirmed.
“We are aware of these complaints and are investigating,” said a spokesperson for the guild. “We extensively engaged with production regarding the complaints and, while shooting has wrapped, we continue to monitor and investigate. We also reaffirm our commitment to ensuring a safe and respectful environment on set. Because our inquiry is ongoing, we cannot respond to specifics of the complaint.”
Written and directed by Jordan Gertner, and co-starring James Franco, The Policeman has Gallo playing Golden State killer Joseph James DeAngelo, a serial murderer and rapist who began terrorizing California residents all the way back in the 1970s, only being brought to justice in 2018. The complaints spotlight sexual comments allegedly made by Gallo, the controversial actor known for projects like The Brown Bunny,...

Ingo Rademacher’s legal battle with ABC over his refusal to get vaxxed while working on General Hospital is over: A Los Angeles Superior Court Judge agreed with ABC in that the actor’s opposition was based on health reasons rather than his religious leanings.
A detailed ruling is expected in next several weeks from the very busy Judge Stephen Goorvitch. Rademacher’s attorney had no comment when contacted by Deadline. However, based on precedent, it is very likely the actor will appeal.
Weeks after Rademacher was pink slipped from General Hospital for not getting the Covid-19 vaccination, the actor in December of 2021 slammed the Disney-owned network with a wide-ranging civil rights lawsuit on constitutional grounds. At the time, Disney had one of the strictest vaccine mandates of any Hollywood studio and most major corporations.

Disney will roll out a single streaming app with programming from Hulu and Disney+ by the end of this year.
CEO Bob Iger announced the move during the company’s fiscal second quarter earnings call, describing it as a “logical progression of our Dtc offerings.” Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ will continue to be available as stand-alone services, he noted. The three have been offered as a discount-priced bundle since 2020, with the combo helping to drive subscriber acquisition across all of the services.
Iger also said the company would be “rationalizing” the volume and investment in streaming content, though he didn’t offer specific details. Pricing, he said, would also be increasing along with the new consolidation plan. CFO Christine McCarthy said the company would take a $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion impairment charge related to content cuts and other streamlining in the company’s streaming operation.

When approaching features like those in his Avatar franchise and the fantastical worlds they depict, filmmaker James Cameron looks for “true, universal human experience” to ground the narrative.
In the case of the original sci-fi epic released by 20th Century Fox in 2009, he was looking at “a relatively simpler story” about “boy meets girl,” in the vein of Romeo and Juliet. And with his long-awaited sequel Avatar: The Way of Water, coming up for release on December 16, he’s turned his attention to family.

In a dramatic move, the Congressional committee investigating the January 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol voted today to subpoena former president Donald Trump on the matter.
The resolution was submitted by committee vice chair Liz Cheney, who urged in reference to Trump, “We must seek the testimony of the key player” in the attack. “I am offering this resolution, that the committee direct the chairman to issue a subpoena for relevant documents and testimony, under oath, from Donald John Trump, in connection with the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.”
The tally was an unanimous, “Aye” from all nine committee members.

Donald Trump was subpoenaed today over his role in the insurrection and attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. The Congressional January 6 Committee announced earlier today that it would vote on whether to subpoena the former president in its ongoing investigation into the assault. There had been little indication in recent days that such a move might be in the offing, though in the hours before the conclave NBC did report on the possibility.
Committee Chair Bennie Thompson said as the gathering began today that “We are convened today not as a hearing, but as a formal committee business meeting so that in addition to presenting evidence, we can potentially hold a committee vote on further investigative actions based upon that evidence.” It was a fairly sharp departure for what had been assumed to be the committee’s final meeting — at least for 2022.

Another wave of Warner Bros Discovery post-merger layoffs is coming.
We hear multiple divisions of the merged company will be impacted, with Warner Bros. Television Group considered a main target. The staff reductions are expected this week, as soon as (and likely) Tuesday. Speculation about the imminent downsizing started spreading like wildfire Monday morning. Reps for Wbd and Wbtvg declined comment.
The number of layoffs is unclear but appears to be substantial. The HBO/HBO Max programming operation in August laid off 14 of staff — about 70 people — the vast majority of them on the Max side, with the areas of Max Non-Fiction Originals, International, Acquisitions, Casting and Live-Action Family Originals as the most heavily impacted.
Like with HBO/HBO Max, the Wbtvg cuts are expected to be accompanied by structural changes spearheaded by Chairman Channing Dungey.

History was made at HBO with the debut of House of the Dragon. The Game of Thrones prequel drew 9.986 million viewers across linear and HBO Max platforms in the U.S. Sunday, the largest audience for any new original series in the history of pay cabler.
The premiere also marked the largest series launch on HBO Max across the U.S., Latin America, and Emea, driving what HBO calls an unprecedented level of concurrent streams on the platform. Typically, Sunday night viewership for a HBO series will represent just 20-40 of the show’s total gross audience, according to the network.
The debut also topped Game Of Thrones‘ 2011 premiere by almost 350 in terms of viewers. Of course, there was no HBO Max back then and streaming was a minor part of the TV industry. Another bit of trivia: Game of Thrones‘ 82-minute series finale...

In terms of surprises there were actually very few of them at the Emmy nomination announcement this morning. We still heard many of the same familiar names leading the charge, some from last year like Ted Lasso, Hacks, Saturday Night Live and others. Some back for another round from past seasons like Barry, Euphoria, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Succession, Better Call Saul, Atlanta, What We Do In The Shadows etc. And then thrown into the mix were some actual newcomers who managed to break through like Yellowjackets, Severance, Only Murders In The Building, the rare foreign language show Squid Game, and the even rarer (these days) broadcast network show, ABC’s Abbott Elementary. Popular tv staples like Yellowstone, NCIS, anything from Dick Wolf, were again completely ignored. Actually when I say there were no real surprises I have to mention I was a bit shocked that the Academy almost completely...

“It was a wild ride,” exclaims 2x Primetime Emmy nominated Grace and Frankie production designer Devorah Herbert about the final season of the Netflix/Skydance Jane Fonda-Lily Tomlin series.

Editor’s Note: This post on the Jan 6 committee hearings by our TV critic Dominic Patten has been reclassified from a review to a commentary, and has been edited to better reflect the author’s point of view. In trying to opine that the presentation of evidence about a horrific day in American history did not rise to the occasion, the author did not mean to denigrate or belittle the loss of life and shocking violence that happened that day.
If tonight’s primetime debut of the House January 6 committee investigating the Maga-fueled murderous attack on the U.S. Capitol last year was any indication of how the democracy-protecting politicians plan on making their pitch to the American public, they fell short.
The fact is Thursday’s hearings led by chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss) and vice chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-wy) was not effective.

Deadline TV critic Dominic Patten and Awards Columnist and Chief Film Critic Pete Hammond take on the Emmy Awards race for Best Comedy Series, where Apple TV+’s juggernaut Ted Lasso is looking for a two-peat after taking the category in its first season last year.
Can Reservation Dogs break into the race in its first go-round, or The Great in its second, or Grace & Frankie in its seventh and final year? And what about Curb Your Enthusiasm? Isn’t it high time for Larry David, already? We talk about all these and more in our conversation, and also hear some of Hammond’s conversation with director Barry Levinson and star Ben Foster about the harrowing HBO movie The Survivor.

On this week’s edition of the Deadline podcast series TV Talk, television critic Dominic Patten and awards columnist Pete Hammond take on network broadcast TV’s Emmy dilemma.
Listen here:
Although the Television Academy heavily relies on fees from the four broadcast networks who share the annual Primetime Emmy telecast on a rotating wheel, it is each of those networks that benefit the least from Emmy attention in the major marquee categories of Drama, Comedy, Limited Series and other categories.
These days, th top categories almost exclusively cater to pay-cable networks like HBO or streamers like Netflix, Apple, Hulu, Amazon and others who have simply — and successfully — crashed and taken over bragging rights for TV’s most valued award, which when the wheel with rights to telecast the Emmys was originally created, was dominated by nominees and winners from those TV networks. My how times have changed.

The state of Netflix has become the subject of endless media speculation and investor worry as their value on Wall Street started plummeting dramatically late last month. The streamer has even floated the once verboten (for them) idea of an ad-supported version to help stem the bleeding, and all of this seemingly is affecting the public and industry perceptions of the steaming behemoth.
For this week’s edition of our TV Talk Podcast Deadline’s TV critic Dominic Patten and awards columnist and chief film critic Pete Hammond decided to meet the issue head on, particularly wondering what, if any, impact this downturn in Netflix fortunes might have on the current Emmy race where Netflix continues to be a major player. Will all this negative talk actually translate or even matter to the Television Academy’s 20,000 or so voters as they get ready to cast nomination ballots in the middle of next month?...

Johnny Depp’s multimillion-dollar defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard is set to start on Monday. But before the fireworks begin, Amber Heard gave her Instagram followers a taste of her mood.
“Johnny is suing me for an op-ed I wrote in the Washington Post, in which I recounted my experience of violence and domestic abuse,” Heard wrote. “I never named him, rather I wrote about the price women pay for speaking against men in power. I continue to pay that price, but hopefully when this case concludes, I can move on and so can Johnny.”She added, “I have always maintained a love for Johnny and it brings me great pain to have to live out the details of our past life together in front of the world. However, somethings have actually changed since the iconic series that launched a 1000 spinoffs went off the air in 2010. NBC have only provided the first episode for critics, so a full-scale review is inappropriate. Yet, with the addition of the likes of Odelya Halevi, Jeffrey Donovan, and Hugh Dancy, let’s just say, the 21st season of this new-ish L&o is as much ripped from the culture as it is the headlines – at least off the bat.

Oscars: Performers & Presenters Won’t Need Vax, But Nominees & Guests Will – Plus Two Negative Tests
The Oscars finally has a Covid policy. Presenters and performers at next month’s Academy Awards will not be required to show proof of vaccination, but nominees and guests will.
People in the latter group also must have two negative Pcr tests, Deadline has confirmed.
In a story posted tonight, The New York Times quoted an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences spokeswoman as saying Oscar presenters and performers indeed will be subject to rigorous Covid testing, however.
The Times also noted that audience members in the sections of the Dolby Theatre nearest to the stage won’t be required to wear a mask but will be seated farther apart from one another than usual. Those in the mezzanine, however, must wear a face covering.
The Academy is inviting 2,500 people, which is 75% of the venue’s 3,317 capacity.

Friday night was coming up fives in primetime for the major networks, as five – count ’em – five shows tied for the top demo mark on the evening.
The CBS crime drama lineup was the king of Friday night, as Swat, Magnum Pi, and Blue Bloods all came in with an 0.5 rating in the 8 Pm to 11 Pm span. Blue Bloods also had the highest overall total viewership at – you guessed it – 5.90 million.
Not to be outdone, ABC’s Shark Tank also came in with an 0.5 on the night. Its trailing 20/20 newsmag had an 0.3 for its examination of the Rust on-set shooting incident, a program that included more of George Stephanopoulos’ exclusive talk with Alec Baldwin from last week. Martha De Laurentiis, an American film and TV producer and wife of Dino De Laurentiis, died early in the morning of December 4 after a long battle with cancer.
“My mother was both a warm, generous, optimistic soul – my father always referred to her as his ‘sunshine’ – and a fierce protector,” her daughter Dina De Laurentiis told Deadline today. “A treasured wife, mother, and grandmother, and a friend who touched so many, as well as a nurturer – and protector – of creative people on the movies and television she loved. She put family first, but got up every morning passionate about building upon my father’s legacy and continuing to forge her own. Her kindness, intelligence and grace will continue to inspire us.”

On The Good Boss, Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem reteamed with filmmaker Fernando León de Aranoa to examine “the abuse of power that some people have in their relationships with others,” from the perspective of an abuser.
In the Spanish-language dark comedy distributed by Cohen Media Group, Bardem stars as Blanco, a charismatic but controlling factory boss who will go to extreme lengths to protect the world he has created for himself, and to stop his affairs with interns from being exposed to his wife.
Bardem noted during his appearance Sunday at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles event at the DGA Theater that his performance was inspired by research and reflection on people “like Harvey Weinstein,” who are applauded by society for their intelligence and business acumen, up until to the point when their abuses of power are finally called out.

I hear Disney Television Studios’ ABC Signature, which produces the hockey-themed sequel series, made the decision not to pick up Estevez’s option for Season 2 after weeks of back and forth with his team over the show’s Covid vaccination requirement. Reps for the studio and Estevez declined comment.
Heading into Season 2, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers — like many Disney TV Studios series — has adopted a mandatory vaccination policy for the cast and crew in Zone A, which was included as an option in the most recent Return-to-Work agreement between the Hollywood studios and major unions. (Zone A includes all actors and crew members who...

Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Koretz introduced a resolution today to support legislation that would eliminate live guns and ammunition from television and movie productions following the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins after a weapon discharged as star Alec Baldwin handled it on set.
“While movies can be convincing and very realistic — they are supposed to be make-believe,” said Koretz, who introduced the resolution. “A single gun accident, let alone a fatality, like the one that occurred on the Rust set and the ones that killed Brandon Lee and Jon-Erik Hexum destroy the lives of not only the victims and their families, but the lives of the other actors and crew who forever after are burdened with the emotional trauma of avoidable accidents.
“The idea that even one misfire has caused danger is outrageous,” he continued. “The clear solution is banishing live guns and ammunition from the sets of television...

Update: Director Richard Stanley (Color Out of Space) who was the subject of allegations of abuse by an ex-partner, has filed criminal complaints in France in response.
“My attorney has filed criminal complaints of Libel and Harassment on my behalf, in France, against Tracy Robertson, aka ‘Scarlett Amaris’, a screenwriter and fantasist who launched a vicious attack on my career and reputation on March 16, 2021,” Stanley said.
Stanley called the accusations “lies and damnable lies, and I have the witnesses and evidence to fully discredit Tracy’s story as a dark fairytale that bears no relationship to the truth.”
He added that he was confident in the outcome of his legal proceeding, and said his reputation would be vindicated by the evidence he would present.
“In the meantime,” he concluded, “I wish to thank all those who have stood by me through this difficult period.”

An angry Britney Spears vented on Instagram earlier today, offering her fears for the future and anger at the system that kept her in a custodial arrangement for many years.
“I’ll just be honest and say I’ve waited so long to be free from the situation I’m in … and now that it’s here I’m scared to do anything because I’m afraid I’ll make a mistake!!!,” she wrote. “For so many years I was always told if I succeeded at things, it could end … and it never did !!! I worked so hard but now that it’s here and getting closer and closer to ending I’m very happy but there’s a lot of things that scare me!!!”
Among the complaints were overly aggressive paparazzi. “I don’t like that they try to scare me and jump out like they do … it’s...

Actress Briana Thomas is suing Sony Pictures Television and CBS Studios, the producers of long-running soap The Young and the Restless, alleging harassment on the set from its showrunner, Anthony “Tony” Morina.
Thomas appeared on the show in a background role as a barista in 2018 and 2019. Legal papers filed Thursday in LA Superior Court (read here) claim in detail that during that time, EP Morina commented on her body, made repeated advances, offered “private acting lessons,” then fired her when he was rebuffed.
The complaint states that Morina would leer at Thomas, complimenting her looks and allegedly telling her she could “really be something” on the show. He allegedly asked her to remove a sarong so he could see her in a bikini in one poolside scene.
“It’s a tough industry to break into, unless you know someone who can help you,” he allegedly said, touching her waist while playing with her bikini strings.
