- Cousin of actor Mandy Patinkin.
- He was chairman of the theater department at Columbia College Chicago. He was a founding member of the Playwrights Theatre Club, the 1950s group that spawned both the Compass Players and The Second City. He had a half-century association with Second City, where he remained an artistic consultant. He also worked with many other Chicago theaters, including the Steppenwolf Theatre Company.
- He was awarded the 1993 Joseph Jefferson Award for Director of a Revue for "Puttin on the Ritz" at the National Jewish Theater in Chicago, Illinois.
