As any TV viewer knows, there is nothing quite like a good main title sequence. Some shows work fine without them, but it never hurts to set a story’s mood with a well-edited arrangement of eye-catching graphics. If the design is good enough to make watchers refuse to hit or even forget about the “skip intro” button, it deserves recognition, and that is exactly what the Best Main Title Design Emmy category is for.
Four of the seven shows currently nominated for their title sequences – “Foundation,” “Lisey’s Story,” “Pachinko” and “Severance” – are Apple TV+ originals. Also included in the 2022 lineup are Hulu’s “Candy” and “Only Murders in the Building” and Netflix’s “Cowboy Bebop.” To discern which opener will most likely win the TV academy’s favor, let’s take a look at each of them individually. Be sure to make your Emmy predictions in this and 26 other...

On this blog, and elsewhere I’ve been privy to discussions/debates about the perceived dearth of black filmmakers (specifically independent) creating work that’s, shall we say atypical of the kind of material that we collectively, broadly brand “black cinema,” in terms of content, themes explored, style, etc.
I’m never really quite sure how to involve myself in those conversations, often scratching my head, perplexed, because I think it should be go without saying that, of course there are black filmmakers with interests that exist outside of what many of us may have come to understand as the “norm” for black cinema. As has been stated here before, while we might all share some similar race-related experiences as black people on this planet, we’re certainly not a monolith, and our individual life experiences vary greatly, across all spectra. So, naturally, our artistic output will vary just as widely.

A major highlight of the Worldwide Short Film Festival this year was the opportunity to talk at length with British animator Osbert Parker, who was on hand for a retrospective screening of some of his key work, including the stop motion animated Film Noir. Now don’t start thinking you know how this one is going to play out because it’s stop motion. Parker does entirely unique things with the technique, blending cut outs with physical props and fully three dimensional sets to fuse styles in an entirely unorthodox and very compelling way. Compelling enough that Film Noir was nominated for a BAFTA and very deservedly so.
We’ve got a minute long clip for this one embedded below the break. Check it out and have your mind blown.
