If you’re in the process of trying to get a short film off the ground, the Pitch Film Fund is now open for submissions. Details below.
Getting your start in filmmaking is tough, but if you’re looking for an opportunity, we’ve got one for you.
The Pitch Film Fund is accepting applications for 2025 entries. There’s £65 000 up for grabs, to be split between two pitches – one comedy and one drama short. Training is also offered to entrants and finalists.
Don’t get too hung up on the two genres mentioned above, there’s some flexibility here. You can mix comedy or drama with another subgenre if you fancy. The only guideline is that your story will need to be based on any story you can find in the Bible.
That’s right, that Bible! If you’re wondering why, the organisers have a very helpful webpage for...

The Annecy Animation Festival is a special place where the majority of attendees are animation students and young folks just getting their start in the industry. There is a palpable excitement and genuine desire to know how these projects are made that is simply not present at any other festival or convention. But, much like Comic-Con, the studio presence is increasing with every year and trying to overwhelm attendees' attention with flashy titles, known IP, and big name talent. Sometimes it works great, though, like in 2022 when Netflix gave a bunch of auteurs the space to realize their passion projects and showcased movies such as "Wendell & Wild" and Guillermo del Toro's "Pinocchio."
This year, Netflix returned to Annecy with another big presentation showcasing some of its upcoming titles, including Zack Snyder's animated show "Twilight of the Gods" and the many other titles it has coming out in the next year or so.

Aardman’s Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham debuted first footage of new Wallace & Gromit character, smart gnome Norbot, during a Next on Netflix showcase at the Annecy International Film Festival on Wednesday.
The co-directors took time away from production at the Aardman studio in Bristol of Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl to give an update on the movie to animation professionals and students at the French lakeside festival.
The existence of a smart gnome character at the heart of the storyline was revealed some time ago, but it is the first time he has been shown to an audience on the big screen.
“Wallace and Gromit’s world has really got to a point where Wallace is just on a big inventing spree, and he decides that what Gromit really needs is another new invention, as if he didn’t already have enough inventions already, and he invents Norbot,...

Attendees at Netflix’s presentation for the Annecy Animation Festival got exclusive glimpses at footage from Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and Zack Snyder’s Twilight of the Gods, among other forthcoming animated projects heading to the streamer.
Snyder and producing partner Deborah Snyder took the stage to share sequences from their animated series that is inspired by Norse mythology and hits Netflix on Sept. 19. This included footage of a dragon battle that involved copious amounts of blood.
“[It’s] shocking for me that the main characters form a team,” Zack Snyder quipped about Twilight of the Gods, given the similar themes from his previous work that includes 300, Watchmen and Justice League. He jokingly added, “I can’t wait to do a single character.”
Snyder, who previously directed the animated feature Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, explained that his process for animation doesn’t differ greatly from how he typically works.

This marks the first outing for the pair since 2008’s A Matter of Loaf and Death. Sarah Snook and Kodi Smit-McPhee lend their voice talents to Adam Elliott’s ambitious animation that has a strong personal touch
Like Britain’s Nick Park at Aardman, Australian stop-motion film-maker Adam Elliott has shown a natural talent for screenwriting comedy – and for fusing that with the simplicity and directness of his animation style itself, creating a distinctive kind of lovability and pathos and importantly an instinct for the underdog and the outsider. He makes mainstream animation look a bit neurotypical. His 2003 short Harvie Krumpet was an Oscar winner, and Elliot has come to the Annecy animation film festival for the premiere of what’s probably his most ambitious feature-length work yet. It is charming and beguiling, with a strong new personal and even autobiographical strain and, as in the past, he has persuaded A-list voice talent to get involved.

There’s a single brief shot in Memoir of a Snail showing a sleepy koala lounging in a tree fork that exemplifies the incredible attention even to the most casually observed details in this proudly analogue assembly of thousands of handcrafted objects. It also serves to show the very specific Australian-ness of Adam Elliot’s second feature, a young-adult chronicle of outsider existence that would feel intimately personal even without the meta aspect of a principal character who aspires to be a stop-motion animator.

You could call Adam Elliot the Australian Nick Park. But while the British Wallace and Gromit creator and his Aardman studio have gone from award-winning claymation shorts to big-budget animation features made with the likes of Dreamworks (Chicken Run, Flushed Away) and Netflix (Chicken Run: The Dawn of the Nugget, the upcoming Wallace and Gromit movie), back in Melbourne, Elliot has kept things small.
His entire filmography: The three shorts Uncle (1996), Cousin (1999), and Brother (2000), two mid-length films Harvie Krumpet (2003) and Ernie Biscuit (2015) and his two features: Mary and Max in 2009 and Memoir of a Snail, together clock in at around 4 hours. You can become an Elliot completist in a single afternoon binge.
Three decades into his career, with an Oscar to his name (best animated short for Harvie Krumpet in 2004), Elliot continues to tell the same sort of stories: Semi-autobiographical dark and funny tales of outsiders, mostly living in 1970s Australia,...

There's been chatter for a while now about plans for a new Wallace & Gromit movie and Aardman Animations has confirmed Vengeance Most Fowl is coming to the BBC in the UK this Christmas.
Don't worry, though, because - as we first reported on Toonado.com - it will debut on Netflix worldwide around the same time.
With a 70-minute runtime, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl will be the first feature-length adventure for these two since 2005's The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2008's A Matter of Loaf and Death clocked in at less than 30 minutes).
The biggest news, however, is the fact this movie will feature the return of iconic villain, Feathers McGraw. The twisted penguin debuted in 1993's Oscar-winning The Wrong Trousers and, if that title is any indication, he's eager for revenge!

Wallace And Gromit return in feature length special Vengeance Most Fowl, a new 70 minute film coming this Christmas.
It’s a commonly held view among both animation aficionados and film fans in general that The Wrong Trousers is one of the best animated films ever made. Thirty perfect minutes crammed with character, jokes and the most well directed train chase sequence every committed to film, it won a BAFTA and an Academy Award.
It’s perhaps no surprise that for their big return to the small screen, Wallace and Gromit will face off against their iconic foe, Feathers McGraw, once more in Vengeance Most Fowl. The BBC has confirmed that the new film will be bigger in scope than its previous four short films – A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave and A Matter of Loaf and Death – and will in fact be a feature film closer...

Netflix is getting animated this Thursday with two announcements bound to inspire nostalgia and smiles. The news begins with the title of Aardman‘s latest Wallace & Gromit movie, Wallace & Gromit: A Vengeance Most Fowl. Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham direct the feature, which focuses on Wallace’s dependency on his befuddling inventions. Next, we’ve gotten word of a SpongeBob spinoff film centered around the antagonistic planktonic copepod, Plankton. Dave Needham directs the Plankton film, which focuses on the villain’s plans for world domination getting foiled.
Circling back to Wallace & Gromit: A Vengeance Most Fowl, the latest stop-motion animated adventure featuring the affable Wallace and his canine companion Gromit, finds Gromit concerned when Wallace invents a “smart” gnome that seems to develop a mind of its own. When Gromit discovers that a vengeful figure from the past could be pulling the strings, he must battle nefarious forces to save his friend and master,...

Netflix Animation held its first slate preview event June 6 at the Tudum in L.A., as a lead-up to the Annecy Animation Festival (June 9-15), where it will premiere Shannon Tindle’s “Ultraman: Rising” (streaming June 14) and tout some of its upcoming works in 2024 and 2025.
Hosted by Christopher Sean (the voice star of “Ultraman: Rising”), attendees were treated to exclusive presentations, previews, and special announcements. The biggest announcement was the full title of Aardman’s next stop-motion feature, “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl,” which will have an Oscar-qualifying run this winter before streaming in 2025.
Directed by franchise creator Nick Park and creative director Merlin Crossingham, who offered a pre-recorded introduction, “Vengeance Most Fowl” marks the return of the villainous penguin, Feathers McGraw, from the Oscar-winning short “The Wrong Trousers.” The film is a cautionary tale of high-tech gone wrong involving an out-of-control “smart gnome” with a mind of its own.

Every Wallace & Gromit installment needs a great villain, and the new film is no exception. Titled Vengeance Most Fowl, the latest stop-motion entry follows our favorite inventor and his loyal pooch as they face off against a brand-new chicken opponent — wait a second, he’s removing something from his head. No! It can’t be! That’s no chicken! It’s Feathers McGraw!
That’s right, the famed villain of 1993 short film The Wrong Trousers is back, and as the title suggests, he’s out for revenge. The dastardly jewel thief made a brief cameo in the final scene of last year’s Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, but now, Feathers, the Sphenisciformes Napoleon of crime, is finally back in full force.
You can see a few images from the new film below, including a peek at Feathers’ grand return. Read on to learn more.

I don’t know how supermodels behave in real life, but if they’re anything like Nick Park, I would want to be friends with them. The face of Infinity Models in Netflix’s Geek Girl, Nick, is a gorgeous 20-year-old guy who’s stuck in a limbo. On one side, he’s got Poppy, an established supermodel herself who’s head over heels for him. But Nick finds Harriet way more attractive and warm, and he feels like that’s who he should be with. Having to walk on a tightrope, Nick makes all the best possible choices he can, and it’s refreshing to see a man who’s emotionally intelligent and doesn’t let the wrong things take over his identity.
Spoiler Alert
Were Nick and Poppy actually dating?
When Harriet first stalked Nick, all she could find on social media was Nick and Poppy’s cheesy couple posts.

Kate Moss got discovered while she and her father were stuck in an airport courtesy of a delayed flight. A photographer spotted Cindy Crawford in the stands of a local football game. Modern family sensation Sofia Vergara was discovered on a beach. There are countless stories of people getting discovered and their whole lives taking a turn. So Netflix’s latest 10-episode series, Geek Girl, follows a similar premise. Harriet Manners, a 16-year-old introvert who gets bullied by pretty much everybody, gets a chance to change her life when a celebrity scout spots her. The show revolves around Harriet trying to find her feet in the modeling world and coming to terms with who she really is.

From a geek girl to a fashion model, Harriet Manners’ life changed all of a sudden when she was spotted by a modeling agent at London Fashion Week. Geek Girl pretty much follows the Princess Diaries character arc—from being bullied at school to being celebrated by the world. Harriet, a neurodivergent teenager, struggled with her social life, but thankfully she had Nat, her best friend, by her side to support her. The school bully, Lexi, and her minions had crushed Harriet’s self-esteem, and as a result, she preferred hiding away from any form of attention. One wrong move and Harriet always ended up becoming the joke of the school. Harriet was not expecting her life to change after the London Fashion Week because making it big in the fashion industry was Nat’s dream and not hers. But life had other plans for Harriet, and soon it turned into a journey of self-discovery.

Netflix’s Geek Girl is all things teen-drama fun. The English show starring House of The Dragon’s Emily Carey does require some suspension of disbelief. Especially if you have any knowledge of the workings of the fashion industry. However, it’s still an amusing coming-of-age story about finding one’s true self and owning up to your distinctiveness. The fashion industry is surely not as forgiving as it is in this show. Geek Girl tells the story of Harriet Manners, an intelligent straight-a student whose life is upended when she gets scouted as a supermodel by one of London’s biggest fashion agencies. Harriet’s not the kind of girl who likes attention. In fact, she’s the kind of kid who hates the spotlight and would rather hide in the corner. Harriet’s never been interested in fashion; it’s always been her best friend Nat, who obviously...

Claymation legends Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham will offer stop-motion fans a sneak peek at their upcoming Wallace & Gromit film at this year’s Annecy animation festival.
The still-untitled feature will see inveterate, cheese-loving inventor Wallace designing a “smart gnome” for the family garden who begins to develop a mind of its own. As events spiral out of control, it is up to faithful dog Gromit to put things right. Park and Crossingham co-directed the film, based on a story by Park and a screenplay from Shaun the Sheep and Gnomeo & Juliet writer Mark Burton.
The film, which will premiere on Netflix worldwide outside the U.K., where it will have a first-release window on the BBC, is the second feature from Aardman Animations based on the beloved characters, following the Oscar-winning Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) and the series of award-winning shorts, including Oscar-winners The Wrong...
The still-untitled feature will see inveterate, cheese-loving inventor Wallace designing a “smart gnome” for the family garden who begins to develop a mind of its own. As events spiral out of control, it is up to faithful dog Gromit to put things right. Netflix will be out in force at France’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival once again this June, after last year’s high-profile attendance with Nimona as well as teasers for Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget and Blue Eye Samurai.

Aardman co-founder Peter Lord has revealed details about the plot of the new Wallace And Gromit film, which will be broadcast at Christmas 2024.
There are few franchises as universally beloved as Wallace And Gromit. What began as Nick Park’s student film project grew into two of Britain’s most iconic animated characters.
So far, the titular heroes have starred in four short films – A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers – which won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 1994 and features arguably the best train chase sequence ever put on screen – A Close Shave and A Matter Of Loaf And Death. There’s also the 2005 feature film The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit, a series of even shorter films called Cracking Contraptions and a videogame, Wallace And Gromit: Project Zoo.
A new film has been in the works for a number of years, owing to the arduous production process of stop motion animation.

For more than 40 years, Aardman Animations has been producing classics like “Wallace & Gromit,” “Chicken Run” and “Shaun the Sheep.” Now, following in the footsteps of pioneers such as Peter Lord, David Sproxton and Nick Park, new recruits have come on board at the company’s headquarters on Spike Island in the port city of Bristol, in the West of England, replenishing its creative treasure chest.
Variety steps along the gangplank to meet some of the more recent additions to the crew: Dan Ojari and Mikey Please, the creators of Oscar-nominated “Robin Robin” (see here); kids’ comedy series “Lloyd of the Flies” creator and director Matthew Walker, and co-director and voice director Jane Davies (see here); and Lucy Izzard, the creator, writer and director of “The Very Small Creatures,” a BAFTA nominated preschool series (see below).
“The Very Small Creatures,” commissioned by U.K. pay-tv operator Sky, is a stop-motion series for one to three-year-olds.

Following in the footsteps of Aardman Animations legends Peter Lord, David Sproxton and Nick Park, a new wave of creators are driving the company forward. While its celebrated franchises, such as Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and Chicken Run are still much loved, and it has four Oscars wins with nine further nominations under its belt, Aardman is also focused on nurturing new talent, such as the creators of Oscar nominated short film “Robin Robin,” and series, such as “Lloyd of the Flies” and “The Very Small Creatures.”
Speaking to Variety from Aardman’s headquarters on Spike Island, Bristol, in the West of England, two of the creative minds behind “Lloyd of the Flies,” Aardman’s first CGI series, explain how the show evolved. In other articles, Variety speaks to Dan Ojari and Mikey Please, the creators of “Robin Robin,” and Lucy Izzard, the creator of “The Very Small Creatures.

Dan Ojari and Mikey Please, the co-writers and co-directors of Aardman Animations’ musical film “Robin Robin,” which premiered on Netflix in November 2021, and was nominated for an Oscar the following year, say that a spinoff is in the cards.
“We are currently working on more stories in the world of ‘Robin, Robin,’” Please tells Variety. “I think that’s all we’re allowed to say. But that would certainly be our hopes and dreams. We feel like there are loads more stories to tell in this world, so we’d love to do more.”

As 2023 came to a close, a pair of animated movies — Aardman and Netflix’s Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget and Illumination/Universal’s Migration — delivered stories featuring carefully designed chickens and mallards, respectively, that leaned into simplicity to be expressive.
Dawn of the Nugget is the sequel to famed British animation studio Aardman’s 2000 stop-motion hit Chicken Run, which was directed by studio co-founder Peter Lord and four-time Academy Award winner and Wallace & Gromit creator Nick Park, who designed the original flock. “He came up with this aesthetic, which is very simple. And if you look at Wallace & Gromit and then look at the chickens, they have this in common. They’re not very mobile. The chickens are kind of like bottle shapes with arms and legs,” says Lord. “Then they have this quite exaggerated mouth. Nick came up with this idea that lip sync was best served...

Please remember that this doesn’t represent every movie and series currently in development at Netflix. There are a few that we’re not allowed to mention just yet, including a hotly anticipated new series from a writer who has produced some excellent titles for Netflix so far.
There are also plenty of shows and movies that should probably be listed here but won’t be. That’s because of how entwined US and UK projects tend to be, with some more US-produced series like The Witcher also falling into the UK camp...

It would be understandable, as much as easy to forgive, were one to have allowed the existence of 2000’s “Chicken Run” to slip from that mental space reserved for cinema’s finest animated offerings; indeed, despite co-director Nick Park (having shared the credit with Peter Lord) helming franchise successes “Wallace & Gromit” and spinoff “Shaun the Sheep,” “Chicken Run” has, for the past 23 years, remained a somewhat unique, solitary hit in the world of stop-motion animation, still the highest-grossing stop-motion film and a critically acclaimed classic begging for a follow-up.

Sam Fell’s Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget finds Ginger (Thandiwe Newton) and Rocky (Zachary Levi) settled down on a bucolic island sanctuary that’s entirely free of humans, their daring Great Escape-style breakout from Tweedy’s industrial farm now a distant memory. But while they and old friends like Babs (Jane Horrocks) and Fowler (David Bradley) appreciate their hard-won freedom, their young daughter, Molly (Bella Ramsey), is now at an age where this safe haven is beginning to feel like its own form of captivity.
Defying her parents’ wishes and heading out in search of adventure, Molly soon finds herself in trouble on the mainland that the older members of her flock once fought so heroically to leave. And it’s not long before their old foe, Mrs. Tweedy (Miranda Richardson), re-emerges with a new diabolical scheme—one that allows the basic premise of Peter Lord and...

It’s the final month of the year, which means much of our attention will be turned to sharing various best-of-2023 rundowns throughout December. The month also brings many of the year’s most noteworthy films, which we’ve rounded up before––some of which will be opening in a more limited capacity and expanding next month.
We should also note some top November picks like The Boy and the Heron and May December are finally getting in front of wider audiences, with the former getting a wide release on December 8 and the latter arriving on Netflix this Friday. For this round-up we’re also not including films getting limited one-week-only runs this month, such as Noora Niasari’s Shayda on December 1 and Ava DuVernay’s Origin and Alice Rohrwacher’s La Chimera on December 8.

‘Chicken Run’ Studio Aardman Animation Was Forced to Reassure Fans That It’s Not Running Out of Clay

From pandemic-induced supply chain backlogs to film stock manufacturing crises, great filmmakers have often been forced to navigate the occasional raw materials shortage. And few filmmaking operations are as reliant on a single material as Aardman Animation is on modeling clay.
A recent report in The Daily Telegraph sent stop-motion animation fans into a panic by saying that the “Wallace and Gromit” studio only had enough modeling clay for one more film. The report indicated that the British studio had yet to find a new source of clay after its primary supplier, Newclay Products, recently shut down.
The public concern became so overwhelming that the studio was forced to release a public statement on X to reassure fans. While Aardman did not share specifics, the legendary stop-motion animation house indicated that it has plans in place to ensure a smooth transition to a new clay pipeline.

Following the closure of the Aardman Animation’s only clay supplier, the studio currently only has enough supplies left for one more film.
How does a claymation studio operate when there’s no clay left? That’s the question facing Aardman Animation following the closure of its one and only clay supplier, Newclay Products. According to The Telegraph, Newclay announced its closure in March of this year, at which point Aardman moved quickly to buy all of the company’s remaining clay reserves.
That was around 400 kilograms of the stuff, which is said to be enough for the studio to finish the current projects in its production pipeline, including a Wallace And Gromit project that is due for release next year. Beyond that, however, things look less certain. Given that current economic forces are making production costs spiral, not to mention that it clearly looks to be a seller’s...

Rocky, Ginger and their family’s newest member Molly lead the charge in a fight to free their fellow chickens from a deadly nugget plot in the first full trailer for Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget.
Hailing from the Academy and BAFTA award-winning Aardman animation studio and Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated director Sam Fell, it’s the long-awaited follow-up to the highest-grossing stop-motion animated film ever, Chicken Run.
After pulling off their escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger (Thandiwe Newton) and Rocky (Zachary Levi) have built a life on an island away from the human world — a sanctuary alongside the flock with their newest hatch, Molly (Bella Ramsey). “We’ve put the past behind us,” Ginger says in the two-and-a-half-minute trailer. “We have to think about Molly now.”
A curious Molly is unaware of the world across the water, the place her parents and community fled from, with Ginger fearing for her daughter.

Although the holidays would usually call for chicken pies, this December sees the dawn of the chicken nugget. The team at Aardman that brought us the beloved children’s show Wallace & Gromit returns to their poultry pals in the new Netflix sequel to the 2000 stop-motion animated film Chicken Run.
The official synopsis from Netflix reads,
