Exclusive: In 2016, Cheryl Guerriero’s script about a college football star-turned-convict landed her a spot on the Black List. Nearly four years later, the writer-producer’s screenplay became Palmer, the Apple TV+ film directed by Oscar-winning The Cave helmer Fisher Stevens with Justin Timberlake starring in the lead role.
Set in a small Louisiana town, Palmer follows Timberlake’s Eddie Palmer as he returns to his community following some time behind bars. Looking to start over, Eddie finds company in a 7-year-old boy named Sam (breakout Ryder Allen), who amuses himself with pretty hair accessories, dolls and Disney princesses. Abandoned by his mother (Juno Temple) and often the target of bullying, Sam forges a brotherly bond with Eddie that helps the latter pick up the pieces of his once-broken life. June Squibb stars as Eddie’s grandmother Vivian, and Alisha Wainwright plays Sam’s Teacher Maggie.

The streaming premiere of Justin Timberlake’s “Palmer” was touted by Apple TV Plus as powering its ‘“most-watched weekend” since the platform debuted just over a year ago. The film has Timberlake playing Eddie Palmer, who returns home from prison and bonds with a boy from a troubled home.
However, it’s singer Nathaniel Rateliff’s end-credits song, “Redemption,” garnering awards buzz for as the race for best original song continues. Variety has the exclusive premiere of his solo acoustic rendering of the theme song (below).
Says Rateliff, “For me, the song is about what I saw in the film, and what I see out there in the world, of continuing to struggle until we find some kind of peace and some kind of answer. It’s about hope and connection. At the end of the song, there’s the line ‘we keep running until we learn to find peace’.” Rateliff says.

A good weekend for Apple. Besides Apple Studios on Saturday acquiring the hot Sundance title Coda for a festival record $25 million. Apple TV+ is reporting it scored its most-watched weekend in the relatively short history of the year-old streaming service. The record-breaking viewership was driven by the premiere of Palmer, starring Justin Timberlake and directed by Fisher Stevens.
While the streamer doesn’t divulge specifics, Palmer was Apple TV+’s third-biggest launch and second-biggest film, per the studio. Apple heads of worldwide video Zack Van Amburg & Jamie Erlicht and head of features Matt Dentler acquired it in July. The drama follows a former college football phenomenon named Eddie Palmer (Timberlake). After a stint in prison, he returns to his hometown to get his life back on track. There, he faces not only lingering conflicts from his past but also a much more surprising challenge as he finds himself suddenly in...

Justin Timberlake headlines the newest Apple TV+ film, "Palmer."When a movie has its heart in the right place, you can forgive a lot of things. Palmer, the latest Apple TV+ movie, is as saccharine as they come. It never aims to surprise, instead it just wants to make your heart soar and tear ducts swell. On both counts, it achieves its goal.
The film stars Justin Timberlake as Eddie Palmer, a former football star who spent the last twelve years of his life in prison. He gets out and lays low with his grandmother, Vivian (June Squibb giving you exactly what you expect), who often babysits her neighbor’s child, Sam (Ryder Allen). Sam’s Mom, Shelly (Juno Temple), goes on an indefinite bender, leaving Sam with Palmer and Vivian. Sam is obsessed with princesses and fairies, which often leaves him the target for schoolyard bullies.

Can there still be any justification for calling Justin Timberlake an under-the-radar movie talent? Sure, he has an Oscar nomination — but it’s for the “Trolls” soundtrack. Meanwhile, he’s been racking up solid acting credits for years, yet every time he turns in another strong performance, people are newly surprised.
Fisher Stevens’ earnest small-town tale “Palmer” — streaming on Apple TV+ — is unlikely to earn Timberlake any awards, but it is another reminder that he’s got the potential for loftier dramatic ambitions.
What “Palmer” is, in every sense of the word, is decent. It’s familiar, and predictable, and a little bit hokey. But it’s also genuinely moving and surprisingly memorable, thanks to its two leads.
