The sequel to 2017’s massively popular Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was just as much of a sensation when it released last year, surpassing 10 million copies sold within 3 days of launch.
Recent Zelda games have not only found loads of commercial success in the Switch generation, but the transformative Botw has also influenced several games, including FromSoftware’s 2022 blockbuster, Elden Ring. While many believe it’s perfectly normal for games to draw inspiration from each other, The Legend of Zelda‘s creators find themselves in a different school of thought.

The Legend of Zelda is as much a genre as it is a franchise. Older entries codified a gameplay loop of exploring dungeons, finding items that open up new areas, and repeating. That design stayed with the franchise, for good and for bad, until The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild tossed quite a lot of it out in favor of expanded open-world concepts.
Given the overwhelmingly positive reviews of that title (and its historic sales figures), Nintendo had clearly struck gold. More importantly, Nintendo made lightning strike twice by iterating on that design with an equally successful sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. But while these recent entries are the most immersive games in the franchise, they raise the important question of which direction the series will follow from now on. The answer, unsurprisingly, seems to be “whatever direction Nintendo wants.”

Ever since the first gameplay footage of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was revealed, fans have been grappling with a sense of déjà vu. As the sequel to Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom was always going to be somewhat similar to its hit predecessor. Even still, some fans wondered if the game was perhaps too similar to Breath of the Wild. Some have gone so far as to call the game Breath of the Wild Dlc. Others have simply wondered if the game will justify its $70 price point.
Well, don’t feel too bad if you thought Tears of the Kingdom was a little too similar to Breath of the Wild. It turns out the Tears of the Kingdom team felt the same way.
“The word “déjà vu” cropped up many times during development,” says series producer Eiji Aonuma in a recent interview. “We...

While there is so much to talk about when it comes to the new Tears of the Kingdom hands-on previews that were just released, I’d be derelict in my duties if I didn’t tell you that the legendary “meat arrow” meme is as real as it is unimpressive
First, some context. During a recent Tears of the Kingdom video preview, Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma revealed the game’s Fuse ability. As the name suggests, that ability allows you to combine two objects and turn them into a new item. So you can do something like attach a spike to a shield and turn it into a weapon. That’s just a very basic example, though. The possibilities are reportedly endless.
During that video preview, fans noticed that the game technically offered the option to attach a piece of raw meat to Link’s arrow. However, Aonuma failed to...

After six excruciating years, the wait for the next Zelda title is nearly over. To fans’ dismay, the creative sadists at Nintendo opted to withhold practically all information about the game, entitled The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, outside of its basic premise and setting until roughly a month and a half before the game’s May 12 release. Initially satiated with a brief 10-minute gameplay demo led by series producer Eiji Aonuma, the floodgates fully opened for fans with the release of the game’s suitably epic final trailer.

The land of Hyrule is full of iconic races, but every now and then, Nintendo introduces a new race to the series’ canon. Usually, these newcomers are right in your face, but Nintendo tried something different with the Zonai. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild set up a fascinating mystery involving the Zonai, and Tears of the Kingdom might finally help solve it.
For those who need a refresher, the Zonai were a prehistoric tribe of barbarians introduced in Breath of the Wild. The only remnants players can find of their existence are ruins located around Faron (most notably the titular Zonai Ruins). There’s also the Barbarian Set of armor which, according to the game, was “once worn by the warriors of an ancient warlike tribe from the Faron region.” While those ruins and items are treated as little more than set dressing, they still introduced a mystery that left players obsessed.

By now, you probably know some version of the story. The first trailer for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was revealed during the SpaceWorld 2001 show and immediately drew widespread backlash, much of which was directed at the game’s cel-shaded art style. It’s a controversy that has arguably become as big of a part of the Wind Waker’s legacy as the game itself.
However, to fully appreciate that controversy, you have to look at some of what people actually said about the game at that time. Thankfully (relatively speaking) you can do that by checking out this preserved IGN forum thread titled “Official Zelda Bitch Thread.” Yes, it turns out IGN comments have always been the way they are. Here are some of the highlights (presented without grammatical corrections):

Nintendo games are full of memorable character designs, many of which even non-gamers recognize. Out of all of those designs, though, Link and his green tunic are arguably the most recognizable. Nintendo makes it a point to ensure nearly every Legend of Zelda game includes the iconic tunic, but why? The games and lore make it abundantly clear almost every Link is a different person despite their shared personalities and seeming inability to speak, so why do they all dress the same?
Let’s start at the beginning. According to an interview with the magazine Gamekult (translated by Polygon), Shigeru Miyamoto stated the tunic design was selected due to themes and hardware limitations. The Nes only let the team use three colors, and since the original Legend of Zelda title had so many forests (or at least what the console could render as forests), green was ultimately selected for Link’s clothes.

The Legend of Zelda is one of the only game franchises out there that can continually star characters who look, sound, and act the same without them technically being the same characters (with a few exceptions). Aside from superficial similarities, timeless character roles, and Link’s general refusal to speak, the Links and Zeldas of the Legend of Zelda franchise share little in common, including their ages.
It’s no secret that some Links and Zeldas are older than others. All one has to do is compare the Link from Wind Waker to the Link from Twilight Princess to see all Links are not meant to be the same age. However, actually determining the characters’ respective ages on a game-by-game basis is far more complicated. The Legend of Zelda games rarely come out and say how old its cast is supposed to be, so we’re usually left to rely on guides,...

There are two kinds of heroes in the world of video games: those who talk, and those who don’t. Some protagonists start their lives as quiet characters and eventually graduate to speaking roles, but The Legend of Zelda’s Link has always remained the strong, silent type.
While voice acting has become the norm in video games, Nintendo’s landmark series The Legend of Zelda has primarily stuck to its non-voiced roots. The franchise only recently started exploring voice acting with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild via voiced cutscenes, and yet despite all of the characters talking around him, Link never utters a word in the game except for the usual grunts of “Hyut!” and “Hya!” While Nintendo is more than willing to get with the times when it comes to the rest of the Zelda cast, Link is seemingly stuck in the past. However, the...

While The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD fixes a surprising number of the original game’s issues, it does little to address the game’s status as this franchise’s somewhat awkward origin story.
Yes, even though the Zelda timeline is a bit of a mess, there’s no denying that Skyward Sword is the earliest adventure in the official Zelda canon. It doesn’t quite tell the story of how “Heaven and Earth were created” (the only listed event that precedes Skyward Sword on the official Zelda timeline), but it does help explain the origins of the Master Sword, the early history of Hyrule, and why Link and Zelda are seemingly destined to do this dance until the end of time.
Truth be told, Skyward Sword does sometimes succeed as an origin story, if for no other reason than many fans couldn’t have guessed that Nintendo would...

A few years ago, Shigeru Miyamoto managed to troll the internet by “revealing” that Link’s full name is “Link Link.” It may have just been a cute nod to the fact that Mario’s name is apparently Mario Mario (a joke established by the infamous 1993 Super Mario movie), but considering that there is so much about Link and the Zelda universe that remains mysterious, fans tend to be invested in anything that Miyamoto says about the franchise.
If you ask me, though, Link’s first name has always been more interesting than his last name. After all, why did Nintendo decided to name Link…well…Link in the first place?
What’s makes that question even more fascinating is that the origins of most other major Nintendo characters’ names are pretty well-known. For instance, Mario was named after an old Nintendo of America landlord, and Donkey Kong’s name...

While The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD for Nintendo Switch was arguably the biggest game revealed during Nintendo’s recent Direct presentation, it’s hardly a surprise that the internet is losing its collective mind over the also recently revealed Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Joy-Cons. I mean, just look at them:
The colors alone make these controllers a winner, but the real joy they inspire comes from the fact that they’re modeled after Link’s most famous pieces of equipment. The right Joy-Con is designed to resemble the Master Sword while the left sports a design similar to the one typically featured on the Hylian Shield.
Much more than just a wink and a nod to the franchise, the layout of these beautiful controllers will offer an additional layer of immersion for Zelda fans who want to feel as if they’re truly swinging the Master Sword and holding the Hylian Shield.

The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 grew out of Nintendo's Dlc plans for the previous game...
The announcement of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, or whatever this sequel will end up being called, was one of the biggest show-stealing moments of E3 2019. But before the closing shot of the trailer confirmed what was going on, fans weren't sure if they were looking at Breath of the Wild Dlc or a brand new game. As it turns out, the sequel was actually born from Dlc ideas for Breath of the Wild.
"When we released the Dlc for Breath of the Wild, we realized that this is a great way to add more elements to the same world," producer Eiji Aonuma told Kotaku in an interview. "But when it comes down to technical things, Dlc is pretty much data—you’re adding data to a preexisting title.

“The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild” takes place after all of the other installments to the franchise, according to the official Nintendo Japan website and reported via SiliconEra.
During the weekend, Nintendo updated its Japanese Zelda webpage, which includes a timeline of the series, and placed the Nintendo Switch title “Breath of the Wild” at the very end. 2011’s “Skyward Sword” is, in contrast, placed at the very beginning of the timeline. What complicates matters is that in “Ocarina of Time,” there are multiple outcomes for the player. The story ends with victory or with Link’s fall. Further, there is no indication whether or not “Breath of the Wild” occurs after the fallen hero or victory outcome in “Ocarina of Time.” SiliconEra also notes that another change in the fallen hero timeline is that “Link’s Awakening” has now been moved to before the “Oracle of Ages” and “Oracle of Seasons” games,...

Breath Of The Wild may just be the first of many open-world Zelda titles, says producer Eiji Aonuma...

Despite it having achieved universal acclaim following launch last month, Nintendo took a rather hefty risk with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Link’s latest adventure rewrites the tried and tested formula that’s been adhered to since the Ocarina of Time days, and it appears that one of the most lauded changes – a truly open world sandbox – is here to stay for future entries in the series.

There are many questions I was expecting to ask of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. How have Nintendo expanded beyond the increasingly regimented boundaries of their second flagship franchise? How will our hero, Link, fit into a world of Witchers and Far Cries, which have perfected their open worlds over the past decade? There was one question, however, I was not expecting to ask: Is this the greatest video game ever made? For a hundred-hour game, the broader story is simple. You, Link, wake up after a century of stasis, to find that the world of Hyrule has fallen to calamity – namely, Calamity Ganon. Hyrule Castle has been subsumed by his swirling horror, and you are asked (by a mysterious Old Man, of course) to make your way there to find Princess Zelda. Along the way, Link must re-gather his memories. Lots of people seem to remember him,...

Imagine your first project at Nintendo was The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Where do you go from there? How do you possibly top one of the most critically-acclaimed and beloved titles of all-time? I’m referring, of course, to the career of legendary game designer Eiji Aonuma, who might be considered — at least in some people’s eyes — to have “peaked early” with that Nintendo 64 titan. As someone who’s enjoyed subsequent titles even more than that formative 3D adventure experience, I can’t say I’m in agreement; and yet, it does seem like Aonuma has spent the majority of his career trying to get out of the massive shadow he cast with his first project.

Nintendo certainly hasn’t broken the mold by announcing a collection of Dlc for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild before the highly-anticipated title is even out, but that hasn’t stopped some from taking issue with the timing of the reveal. The Big N having never made additional content for a Zelda title before could perhaps explain the increased scrutiny its so-called expansion pass has been placed under, but whatever the case, Nintendo’s Bill Trinen is on-hand to provide a little context for the reveal.
Speaking to IGN (via VG247) Trinen admitted that “It [the expansion pass announcement] was tough, because we actually had a lot of debate in terms of do we announce it, how do we announce it,” adding that, despite the fact that Link’s...

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will have an Expansion Pass that includes two add-ons as well as a day one bonus, Nintendo has announced via press release. Two of these will contain “useful items,” according to the Big N, with the third housing an exclusive, immersion-breaking shirt adorned with the Nintendo Switch logo for Link to wear during his adventures.
As for the Dlc packs themselves, the first is scheduled for release at some point during the summer, and will introduce the Cave of Trials challenge, as well as a new difficulty mode and feature for the in-game map. Initially announced for Wii U all the way back in 2013, it’s fair to say that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been a long time coming. Much of that comes down to the Big N fostering development of its new hardware – currently bearing the codename Nx – allowing Breath of the Wild to be released across both the Wii U and its oncoming successor, the Nx.
But as long-time series producer Eiji Aonuma told Edge magazine (via Nintendo Life), mismanagement at the top end is also to blame for the game’s prolonged stint in development.
Upon reaching certain milestones in development, Aonuma-san revealed that a breakdown in communication meant that the process became much longer than it needed to be. Essentially, it appears the team became caught...

Every E3 is filled with surprises of all sorts. Sometimes a game shows up that you didn’t expect. Or perhaps a game is detailed in a way you didn’t expect (coming out soon, or has added features for example). Another way surprises shock fans at E3 is by simply being that, a surprise. This E3 was no different and we got a few surprises that came out of nowhere that shocked quite a lot of fans.

I didn’t catch wind of Quake appearing at E3 until it was just about to begin, then bam Quake appears. Bethesda showed off a quick teaser and that was about it. However the teaser had other teasers in it with hints of Wolfenstein making a return.
This announcement would have gone higher up on my list if we had any content to go with it.

In related news, Nintendo producer and Zelda stalwart Eiji Aonuma revealed that the team had at one stage considered introducing the option of choosing a female protagonist at the beginning of Breath of the Wild – perhaps placing players in the shoes of Zelda in lieu of Link – but as pre-production progressed, the notion was ultimately left on the drawing board.
Cut before it could gain any significant traction, Aonuma’s reasoning for the move was that, “if [Nintendo] places princess Zelda as the main character who fights, then what is Link going to do? Taking into account that, and also the idea of the balance of the Triforce, we thought it best to come back to this [original] makeup.”
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is currently in development for both Wii U and the as-yet-mysterious Nx. No word yet of a release date for either, though the Big N has ensured would-be early adopters that the 2017 title will ostensibly offer the same experience across each platform in both gameplay and visuals.

Nintendo has kicked off their E3 show this year with a first look trailer for "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild". This boundary-breaking new open-world game in the acclaimed series sees you traveling to learn what became of the ruined kingdom of Hyrule.
Series Producer Eiji Aonuma says the new installment is a clean break from the conventions of previous games, removing boundaries that forced players to follow a set path and introducing new gameplay that has not been experienced in previous games in the series.
"The Legend of Zelda" will launch for Wii U in 2017 and will serve as a debut title on the Nintendo Nx.

Nintendo’s aiming to do “something new” for The Legend Of Zelda Wii U, says series producer Eiji Aonuma. Speaking to Japanese publication Famitsu (via Kotaku), Aonuma described his desire to make this year’s (hopefully) Zelda title very different to what fans have come to expect from the games by way of a rather strange analogy.
I think the base of our secret sauce has always been Ocarina of Time. But this time, the change in flavour will be like going from Japanese food to Western style food. Perhaps, players will be surprised.
In other words, it sounds like Aonuma and his team want to surprise players by changing up the usual dungeon-crawling formula of past games. How different the game will be, though? Nobody knows right now: we’re not even sure which console(s) it will end up releasing for.

So. I’m guilty. I’m guilty of being one of the self-proclaimed fans of Nintendo who shamelessly complained at what seemed like the most lackluster Nintendo showing at E3 in years and after a day of pouting I’ve realized how wrong I really was.
First, let me give you a few samples of my bitter cynicism throughout the event.
I’m not going to lie. I felt really underwhelmed by the content showed during their Digital Event and, to be completely honest, a little blue balled. On Sunday, we knew Nintendo was going to announce Ryu, Roy, and some other new content for Super Smash Bros. WiiU. But what we didn’t know is that Ryu and Roy would be launching the same day as Lucas. On Sunday. The day of the official announcement. Not only that, but they’ve been listening to us, the fans, bitch and complain about tournament mode.

Since announcing that The Legend of Zelda for Wii U would be released in 2015, during last December’s Video Game Awards, producer Eiji Aonuma and his team have had a change of heart. As such, the game will no longer be releasing this year and will not appear at E3 2015, to the disappointment of many.
In a short video that recently hit the Internet, Aonuma speaks directly to fans as to why it is that The Legend of Zelda for Wii U will not meet its originally intended release window. Nintendo's Legend Of Zelda entry for the Wii U, once scheduled for this year, is "no longer making a 2015 release"...
If there's a game on the horizon just about every Wii U owner's looking forward to, it's Nintendo's next entry in the Zelda series. Touted as a radical departure from the linear design of its predecessors, the currently-untitled Zelda Wii U is said to be the biggest, most open game in the series so far.
But Zelda Wii U's breadth, it seems, is time-consuming to create. Originally scheduled for release this year, Zelda is now delayed, with producer Eiji Aonuma stating that his team is "no longer making a 2015 release our number one priority."
