Tom Oliver has quit 'Neighbours'. The 76-year-old actor - who has played Lou Carpenter in the Australian soap for 27 years - will be scaling back his role on the show, but will continue to film the occasional storyline. A spokesperson for the Channel 5 show told the Mirror: ''Tom has scaled back his workload over the past few years and while he will not be appearing as regularly on 'Neighbours', good news for the many Lou Carpenter fans is the producers have persuaded him to continue to do guest appearances. What happens when the makers of Trainspotting and Four Lions train their sights on the Met for a Channel 4 comedy drama?
Danny Boyle is up a ladder, looking down on the chaos he's created. Dust settles on what's left of a terrace house's bathroom, its plastic peach suite covered in powdered masonry and plaster from the recently demolished toilet wall. A gunman has just burst through it head-first, leaving a beige fog behind him as he runs away. Boyle's hair has little bits of plaster in it as he peers into the monitor, satisfied. "Ok, got it," he says quietly and the crew start clearing up.
We are not in a terrace house but a curtained-off area in the middle of an open-plan 70s office block next to the Tower of London. Boyle, along with Peep Show writers Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong, is tackling the damaged relationship between the police,...

Neighbours legend Tom Oliver has hinted that Lou Carpenter's daughter Lauren will be heading back to Ramsay Street. The actor told What's On TV that producers are planning to recast the character, who was last seen on screen in 1994. Oliver commented: "There is a possibility in the near future that Lou's daughter Lauren will be coming back. But I don't think the character will be played by the original actress, Sarah Vandenbergh. She's now happily married and living overseas. "I'd also love to see Lou's adopted daughter Lolly back as an adult. Jiordan Anna Tolli played that part for seven (more)...

Neighbours legend Tom Oliver has credited the show's community spirit for its ongoing success. The Ramsay Street serial's popularity with UK audiences was shown once again last night (September 24) as it won the 'Best Daytime Soap' prize at the 2012 Inside Soap Awards. Oliver, who plays fan favourite Lou Carpenter, was present to receive the gong and spoke to Digital Spy about the result on the red carpet. Reflecting on the programme's appeal, Oliver explained: "Everyone likes a talk over the garden fence. A lot of the young people don't communicate with their neighbours like they used to when I was young. And I think [Neighbours] promotes that - it promotes communities getting to know each other and I think that's something people really want." On playing the role of Lou, the 74-year-old commented: "He's getting (more)...

Neighbours star Ryan Moloney has admitted that he finds watching old episodes of the soap embarrassing because of his character's haircut. The 32-year-old, who has played Jared 'Toadfish' Rebecchi (Toadie) for nearly 18 years, told MSN that he hated his character's signature hairstyle. "It's a little embarrassing when you look back at those photos and go, 'Wow, what was I thinking?'" he explained. "I think it was the worst haircut in the world, it looked like I had a dead rat hanging out the back of my head. "Unfortunately the producers made me keep it for a number of years. It was quite hard being an 18-year-old guy with that kind of thing hanging on your head." Viewers eventually saw Toadie's ponytail being chopped off in public by Lou Carpenter (Tom Oliver) in an episode that (more)...

Comedian Paul Burling will make his return to the Britain’s Got Talent stage, but the dad revealed that he wasn’t always so outgoing. Read the interview below where Paul talks about his shy childhood, his biggest ever audience and his previous claim to fame.
When and how did you discover you had your talent?
I was quite shy at school but would do my impressions at primary school to my friends, it was mainly cartoon impressions when I was younger so it just developed from there but I never thought I would make a career out of it. I remember being on a school trip and sitting around a table and everybody asking me to do some impressions which I did, and then I realised one of the teachers were recording it, I don’t know where that tape is now but people said I was funny and...

Tom Oliver has revealed how he would like his character Lou Carpenter to eventually exit Neighbours. The actor, who first appeared in the Australian soap in 1988, rejected the traditional ways characters leave Ramsay Street in favour of some of his own ideas. "[Going to] Bendigo seems to be choice number one, some couples have gone to Perth too. I don't think Lou will ever retire. Just for fun I wrote half a dozen ideas of how Lou could leave the show," he told Digital Spy. "Choice number six was that he drops dead of a heart attack in the general store, holding (more)...

Neighbours actor Tom Oliver has admitted that he was 'gutted' when Ian Smith decided to quit the Australian soap. The star described the pair, who first appeared together on screen in 1988, as "old rascals" and claimed that they keep in touch all the time. "It was a sad farewell. Not just in character, but for me and Ian too. We worked together for so long and were both on the same wavelength," he told Digital Spy. "We had as much fun off camera as we did (more)...
