Since I seem to be on a sort of nostalgia kick lately, let me add one more to the mix, and in light of conversations we've had on this blog about the dearth of movies that tackle mental illness in the black community (partly spurred on by recent films like Jono Oliver's powerful "Home" which stars Gbenga Akinnagbe, and even Halle Berry's "Frankie & Alice")... Now I will admit openly that I have never been a fan of Diana Ross as an actress (so go ahead and shoot me...), but I have to say that there is one thing she’s done that absolutely impressed and convinced me that she had the goods to be a truly...

A moving, informed tale dealing with one man’s struggle with mental illness, Jono Oliver’s debut feature Home is graced with both heart and street smarts. The film tells the tale of Jack, an outpatient hoping to leave his group home, reunite with his son, and manage life on his own. Adversity comes from both his illness but also the day-to-day realities of life in New York. Indeed, Oliver’s great achievement is to make Jack’s reality an entirely palpable one while not sugarcoating the issues of his affliction. In a film with strong performances thorughout, Jack is wonderfully played by Gbenga […]...

Last year, both Tambay and I didn’t have enough words to say about Jono Oliver’s terrific feature film directorial debut Home. Starring Gbenga Akinnagbe (The Good Wife, Graceland and many other film and TV roles), the film deals with a man suffering from a mental illness in a halfway house facility who is trying to rebuild his life, make peace with the wife he was once married to, and to be a father to the child they had together. And the first thing he needs to do on his road to accomplishing all of that, is to find his own place, which, for him, symbolizes his freedom, independence and, hopefully, a new life. Needless to say, it’s not easy and he encounters more than...

The 45th Annual NAACP Image Awards went off without a hitch earlier this evening (February 22) with "12 Years a Slave" continuing to make waves snagging the biggest prize of the night.
Before her film won Outstanding Motion Picture, the gorgeous Lupita Nyong'o added another piece of hardware to her already impressive collection taking home a trophy for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, while Kerry Washington snagged up her second Image Award with a win for Best Actress in a Dramatic Series. Kerry's show "Scandal" also won Outstanding Drama Series.
In addition, the hilarious Kevin Hart took home Entertainer of the Year, while Oprah Winfrey paid tribute to the late Nelson Mandela with a touching speech and musical dedication.
"He was everything we have all have heard and more. He was humble and he was unscathed by any kind of bitterness after all that we know he's been through," Winfrey said.

Renaissance man Gbenga Akinnagbe has been somewhat quietly building a production empire of his own, attached in some capacity to two feature film projects that made their debuts in Park City last year (acting in, and co-producing Neil Drumming's feature film directorial debut titled Big Words - at Slamdance; and producing Shaka King's Newlyweeds - at Sundance, both in 2013). He also stars in and co-produced Jono Oliver's acclaimed drama Home - another film we've covered quite a bit on this blog over the last 12 months, which will be out next month, after a successful film festival circuit journey. In addition to producing and acting in films in this country (the...

One of the nicest surprises when the 45th NAACP Image Awards Nominations were announced recently, was the nomination for Outstanding Direction for A Motion Picture, which went to Jono Oliver for his independent film Home. He joins Steve McQueen, Malcolm D. Lee and Lee Daniels, who were also nominated for best director. And no doubt both Tambay and I have both raved about Home, because, simply, it’s really worth it (Here, Here and Here); but what about Oliver himself? Though Home is his first feature film as a director, he has had years of experience in filmmaking as a DGA assistant director on films and TV shows as such The Great Debaters, Notorious, Guess Who, Barbershop 2,...

Jono Oliver's Home is an Odyssey, with Jack Hall (Gbenga Akinnagbe) its anxiety-ridden Ulysses whose curse is a severe mental disorder.
Separated from his family and living in a recovery home following a psychotic episode during which he tried to burn his house down, he's in the final weeks of his program and executing a plan to reenter society as a working man with his own place.
Akinnagbe's embodiment of Jack is the most wholly realized accomplishment in the film. His speech, hesitant and stammering, is matched by defensive body language, his walk and posture as guarded and wary as a bird's. It's a truly physical performance in a film that didn't demand it. Home oscillates wildly between the unstudied, intimate drama it wants to be and often overwrought melodr...

Tambay, back in April (Here), wasn’t giving you the bunk when he said that writer, producer and director Jono Oliver's dramatic film, Home, was “endearing” and, “Inspirational.” The film, which stars Gbenga Akinnagbe, Tawny Cypress, Danny Hoch, James McDaniel, Joe Morton, and Isiah Whitlock, is a moving, engrossing and beautifully acted film that also works incredibly effectively as a solidly crafted “feel good” film.Despite its serious subject matter, about a mental patient suffering from perhaps extreme bi-polar disorder, Home is far from a grim, dispiriting film. Just the opposite; it’s a film that deals with the eternal possibility of hope and that good things eventually do...

When you think about it, one subject that black filmmakers have basically overlooked is the subject of mental illness.Of course, there are exceptions, such as filmmaker Jono Oliver’s quite moving and powerful recent indie feature, Home (which will be screened at the Black Harvest Film Festival in Chicago this August). But aside from Oliver’s film, black films that deal with mental illness are few far and far between. There’s no one reason why for this. Perhaps because the subject of mental illness is still a touchy one among black people, or possibly because it’s considered to be “dirty laundry” that shouldn’t be exposed in the public. Who knows? But there’s a newly completed film...
