Vertical Entertainment has acquired North American rights from NeoClassics Films to “The Lears,” starring Bruce Dern in a modern-day interpretation of William Shakespeare’s “King Lear,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The film also stars Anthony Michael Hall, Sean Astin, Aly Michalka, Nic Bishop and Victoria Smurfit. Vertical is planning a day and date platform release on Feb. 15 in 10 markets.
Written and directed by Carl Bessai, “The Lears” premiered in 2017 at the Nashville Film Festival. Smurfit recently won the Irish Film & TV Academy Award for best supporting actress for her role in the film.

Vancouver-based NeoClassics Films is launching a new division, NeoClassics Home Entertainment, which will distribute in the U.S. home entertainment market.
Nhe's first release will be Christophe Van Rompaey's "Moscow, Belgium," slated for Jan. 26.
Other upcoming releases include "Captain Abu Raed," "The Black Balloon" and "Surviving Crooked Lake."
Nhe is being managed by Rene Leda and Anatol Chavez.
Irwin Olian, CEO of NeoClassics, said the new home entertainment division "will now provide us with the opportunity to maximize penetration of our pictures in the home video marketplace, as well as offering to producers, sales agents and other distributors the opportunity to maximize home video revenues on their product with the lowest possible fees, costs and overheads, while maintaining transparency and accountability throughout the distribution process."...

Culver City-based sales rights rep NeoClassics Films has formed a production division, NeoClassics Production.
NeoClassics chief Irwin Olian said principal photography on a first film -- the romantic comedy "Gypsy Love" -- will begin in New York in October.
Written by Slade Kennett and Amin Matalqa, "Love" centers on the courtship of a young Italian-American woman from Brooklyn and a mysterious young gypsy.
