Sony Music Entertainment has acquired Somethin’ Else, which touts itself as the U.K.’s largest independent podcast and audio producer, and one of the BBC’s biggest independent producers of programs.
Terms of the acquisition are not being disclosed.
With the deal, Sony Music is creating a newly expanded global podcast division, headed by Somethin’ Else’s two top execs: Steve Ackerman (above left), chief content officer and vice chairman; and Jez Nelson (above right), founder, executive chairman and CEO.
Ackerman and Nelson are both being named executive VPs, co-heads of global podcasts at Sony Music, jointly spearheading Sme’s global podcast content and business development strategy. Ackerman will oversee operations in New York, and Nelson will run the division’s U.K.-based podcast operations. Both will report directly to Dennis Kooker, Sony Music Entertainment president for global digital business and U.S. sales, and Tom Mackay, president of premium content A&r.

Podcast consolidation continues.
Sony Music Entertainment has acquired British audio and TV producer Somethin’ Else. The record label is expanding its global podcast division after the deal, which will see it ramp up its in-house creative production capabilities.
It is the latest M&a deal in the audio world following Amazon’s acquisition of Wondery.
Sony and Somethin’ Else have previously collaborated on podcasts such as David Tennant Does A Podcast With… and Power: The Maxwells.

They've entertained millions with their 5 live film review show and Wittertainment podcast off-shoot, but now Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo are in full-vision thanks to new online offering The Film Thing.
Available through the duo's YouTube channel and the BBC website, the first episode of The Film Thing brings Kermode and Mayo's movie debates to the screen with reviews of Unfriended, Two By Two, Monsters: Dark Continent and Far from the Madding Crowd.
The 23-minute show also features a cameo appearance from Jason Isaacs*, Countdown's Susie Dent explaining Wittertainment term 'Brechtian Alienation Device' and an extended interview with Carey Mulligan.
The Film Thing is made by Somethin' Else, who also produce the 5 live show and the podcast.

Virgin Media report today that Rolling Stones band member – and Absolute Radio DJ – Ronnie Wood is to launch a new music show on Sky Arts 1 next year.
The show, to be entitled, ‘The Ronnie Wood Show’, will see Ronnie joined in the studio by a series of “well known guests from the music industry” for interviews and live performances.
Speaking about his show, 64 year old Ronnie said, “I’ve had so much fun doing my radio show and had lots of success with recent awards…
