“That was sick,” exclaimed a twenty-something guest as the Los Angeles Philharmonic concluded its stirring gala opening night performance celebrating the 90th birthday of composer John Williams on Tuesday, Sept. 27. The LA Phil, conducted by music & artistic director Gustavo Dudamel, had just surprised attendees by playing Williams’ famed Star Wars :Main Theme” song as an encore. It capped a night that also included selections from his memorable scores for E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Schindler’s List (played by acclaimed violinist and guest artist Anne-Sophie Mutter), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, plus “Princess Leia’s Theme.”
Williams, who turned 90 in February, took the stage himself to conduct Mutter and the LA Phi playing his original Violin Concerto No. 2, a piece written especially for the violinist.

John Williams has hinted that “Indiana Jones 5” might be his last film. The legendary musician and Oscar-winning composer behind the scores for “Jaws” (1976), “Star Wars” (1977), “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1982) and more teased the news in an interview with Associated Press, “At the moment I’m working on ‘Indiana Jones 5,’ which Harrison Ford — who’s quite a bit younger than I am — I think has announced will be his last film. So, I thought: If Harrison can do it, then perhaps I can, also.”
Williams, 90, pointed to the six-month commitment often required by blockbuster films. He said, “At this point in life, [it’s] a long commitment to me.” But five-time Oscar winner Williams made it clear that he wasn’t going to close the door on music. He said, “I don’t want to be seen as categorically eliminating any activity.”

John Williams turns 90 years old on Feb. 8. And the world’s most famous film composer shows no signs of slowing down.
The five-time Oscar winner, creator of many of the most well-known movie themes of all time — everything from “Jaws” and “Star Wars” to “E.T.” and “Harry Potter” — is finishing work on two new film scores and, Covid permitting, plans to conduct concerts with at least five orchestras between April and November.
Commemorating Williams’ nonagenarian status is the release of “John Williams: The Berlin Concert,” a two-disc Deutsche Grammophon set recorded during the composer’s Oct. 14-16 concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic.
The 93-minute collection includes many of Williams’ familiar signature tunes — “Star Wars,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Jurassic Park,” “Superman” — plus a few less familiar pieces, including his theme for “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and his moving, non-film “Elegy for Cello and Orchestra.”

The pandemic may have cancelled live performances and moviegoing for most of 2020, but for film-music buffs, that just meant more time at home listening to their favorite music, including many releases of music never before heard outside their original cinematic contexts.
“There is still an unquenchable thirst for classic scores, both previously unreleased and reissues of scores that are expanded, re-mastered, or both,” says Matt Verboys, co-owner of L.A. label LA-La Land Records. “As technology keeps advancing, many previous releases can now get a sonic upgrade that makes the music well worth a revisit.”
The business challenges remain unchanged, however, he says: “Who holds the rights to a given score and can those rights be obtained? Do the music elements even exist and if so, can they be rounded up? Once obtained, is the audio good enough to release, or does massive restoration work need to be done?”

Composer John Williams received two Grammy nominations, as announced yesterday, bringing his grand total to 71 nominations, with 24 wins to date.
Williams was nominated in the composing and arranging field. His “Galaxy’s Edge Symphonic Suite,” written for the new “Star Wars”-themed park at Disneyland, was nominated for best instrumental composition, while his arrangement of “Hedwig’s Theme,” the best-known piece from the “Harry Potter” films, for violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter’s all-Williams album, was cited for best instrumental arrangement.
According to official Grammy statistics, these are the legendary film composer’s 70th and 71st nominations.
Surprisingly, considering his 58-year history of Grammy attention (dating back to his 1961 nod for his TV score “Checkmate”), he is not the most-nominated film composer. He is now just one nomination behind his colleague Henry Mancini, who amassed 72 nominations before his death in 1994.

Playing violin is an art that many people are yet to master yet admire from afar. It takes passion and continuous training to become good at it. Regardless of what you think of the Star Wars prequel films, one thing you can’t really talk crap about is the musical score that was created by John Williams because ints incredible work!
Well, Williams recently teamed up with German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter to create a new arrangement for the score, “Across the Stars”, which was the memorable theme created for Anakin and Padme in Attack of the Clones.
The new arrangement for the song turned out absolutely beautiful. This will be a part of an album that will consist of a compilation of Williams scores that have reinterpreted that will be released next year.
Some of those other scores will include Cinderella Liberty, Dracula, Schindler’s List, Harry Potter, Memoirs of a Geisha and Munich.
Listen to the new arrangement of “Across the Stars” and let us know what you think.
