When NBC sent out its weekly Tonight Show listings yesterday, there was a curious lack of guests for November 19. Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite have the music gig, but there wasn’t a headliner. Now we know why. The network spilled to the AP today that President George W. Bush will make his fourth appearance on the Jay Leno-hosted show that night, taking about life after the White House. It’s a solid get for the show, as the former commander-in-chief has kept relatively quiet since leaving office in 2009, rarely giving extended interviews. He most recently sat with Leno in November 2010. Not a bad November sweep for The Tonight Show thus far, politically speaking: Tea Party champion Sen. Ted Cruz made his debut on the late-night circuit with Leno this past Friday. Related: Obamacare Angles For Starring Role On Primetime TV...

No one's ever considered Justin Timberlake timid, but when he took the stage at the White House to participate in the "In Performance at the White House: Memphis Soul" show on Tuesday night (April 9), he proved he had no fear by ordering the crowd, President Barack Obama included, to sing along.
The "Suit & Tie" singer joined forces with 71-year-old guitarist Steve Cropper to perform "(Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay," and during the silky smooth number, Timberlake asked that the President take it away. "Mr. President, everyday, come on," he said, as the crowd, President Obama and the first family included, sang the chorus.
The evening, which will air on PBS, celebrated the music of Memphis in the '60s, involving soul-inspired performers like Mavis Staples, Booker T. Jones and the Alabama Shakes.

Justin Timberlake made an appearance at the White House in Washington DC yesterday. The entertainer was on hand for Michelle Obama's Soulsville, USA: The History of Memphis Soul event, an interactive music workshop for 120 middle and high school students from across the country. Justin spoke to the crowd in the State Dining Room, where he was joined by legendary artists Mavis Staples, Sam Moore, and Charlie Musselwhite to teach the origins and influences of Memphis soul music. They took turns sharing stories and even had some laughs, stopping to fist-bump each other on the stage. The first lady's educational event precedes an evening concert called In Performance at the White House, a tradition that the Obamas started back in 2009. Later, Justin hit the stage with Queen Latifah and several other performers to celebrate the history of soul music. President Barack Obama hosted the event, and joked to Justin that...

We go back over them again and again. And they’ve played an important part in our history.” Queen Latifah, Steve Cropper, William Bell, Ben Harper, Cyndi Lauper, Joshua Ledet, Sam Moore and Charlie Musselwhite also performed...

Justin Timberlake performed at White House's celebration of Memphis soul music on Tuesday, serenading Barack and Michelle Obama with a strong take on "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" and imploring the president to sing along.
The event was a part of the Obama's "In Performance" series. The first couple has made a habit of inviting musicians from different genres to explore the themes and history of their respective crafts. Tuesday's event also featured Otis Redding, Booker T Jones, Queen Latifah and Cyndi Lauper.
A clip of Timberlake's performance is available above. Tuesday's gig is yet another step in Timberlake's hot streak that began when he released "Suit & Tie," the Jay-z-featuring lead single off his comeback album "The 20/20 Experience." Despite oft-overlapping acts, massive music festivals have a tendency to always reflect their surroundings. No matter if Coachella is being headlined by a holographic Tupac or a bill brimming with early-90s Britpop nostalgia, the festival is always going to to feel like an outgrowth of Los Angeles--and be very different from Chicago's Lollapalooza.

Los Angeles — Be it concert or charity auction, Bruce Springsteen can bring any event to a crescendo.
Springsteen briefly took over auctioneering duties before being honored as MusiCares person of the year Friday night, exhorting the crowd to bid on a signed Fender electric guitar by amping up the deal. The 63-year-old rock `n' roll star moved the bid north from $60,000 by offering a series of sweeteners.
"That's right, a one-hour guitar lesson with me," Springsteen shouted. "And a ride in my Harley Davidson sidecar. So dig in, one-percenters."
That moved the needle past $150,000. He added eight concert tickets and backstage passes with a bonus tour conducted by Springsteen himself. That pushed it to $200,000, but he wasn't done.
"And a lasagna made by my mother!" he shouted as an in-house camera at the Los Angeles Convention Center cut to his 87-year-old mother Adele Ann Springsteen.
And with an extra $250,000 in the musicians charity's coffers,...

When a singer-songwriter (Ben Harper) and a blues legend (Charlie Musselwhite) put their heads and their hearts together in the name of a good tune, the resulting tapestry of scales, shouts, hums, riffs and broken-hearted ruminations is bound to be a vibrant one, and that’s exactly what the pair set out to celebrate last night at Irving Plaza. Get Up!, the product of Harper and Musselwhite’s collaboration that saw its official release yesterday, was an effort in the making for over a decade. They were introduced by blues great John Lee Hooker when they were brought in for a recording...

Plant recorded "Walking Into Clarksdale" with former Zeppelin bandmate Jimmy Page and has visited the town numerous times. The rock star is returning to Clarksdale this weekend to headline the Sunflower River Blues and Gospel Festival's 25th anniversary celebration with his new roots-music band, the Sensational Space Shifters.
On Saturday, Plant will take the stage with Grammy-winning vocalist Patty Griffin, West African virtuoso musician Juldeh Camara, guitarists Justin Adams and Bill Fuller, keyboardist John Baggott and drummer Dave Smith.
The performance is being hailed "one of the single biggest things to happen to Clarksdale," said resident and Cat Head music store owner Roger Stolle.

-- Tom Waits, "Bad as Me" (Anti-)
Tom Waits' first album of new music in seven years is a satisfying treat spanning his various sounds and styles. The 61-year-old musician is in peak form, working his voice like another one of his instruments – spitting and wailing on some tracks, charming with his haunting falsetto on another.
Waits brings in a host of celebrated musicians to help him tell stories about heartache, war, life and living on "Bad as Me." Bluesman Charlie Musselwhite contributes harmonica to several tracks; veteran keyboardist Augie Meyers plays piano, organ and accordion; David Hidalgo of Los Lobos plays guitar on a few songs, as does the legendary Keith Richards, while Flea and Les Claypool contribute bass lines. Waits' son, Casey Waits, plays drums on most of the album's 13 tracks (The deluxe version has three additional songs).

At this point, perhaps we can officially declare Eminem's comeback to be complete. He's already got the year's best-selling album (and a pair of the biggest singles), and now, well, he's the most-nominated artist of the 53rd annual Grammy Awards.
On Wednesday night (December 1), Em picked up a staggering 10 Grammy nods, including Song and Record of the Year (for "Love the Way You Lie") and Album of the Year (for Recovery, which is also up for Rap Album of the Year). He also scored noms for Best Rap Solo Performance (for "Not Afraid"), Pop Collaboration With Vocals (for his turn on B.o.B's "Airplanes Part II") and Best Rap Song (for "Lie").

It’s that time of the year already! The 53rd annual Grammy nominations (for 2011) were announced last night and it’s safe to say that Eminem made a clean sweep popping up in 10 categories. Love the Way you Lie is up for Song and Record of the Tear while Recovery has received nominations for Album and Rap Album of the Year. Just for a quick memory jog, remember who was a big winner at last year’s Grammys? Beyonce! Other big nominees this year include Bruno Mars with seven nominations, and Jay-z, Lady Gaga and Lady Antebellum with six each. John Legend and B.o.B follow closely with five. Katy Perry, who’s performing for VH1 Divas Salute the Troops (Sunday, Dec. 5, at 9/8c), scored four nominations, including one for Album of the Year for Teenage Dream. What’s your take on the nominees this year? Did anyone get left out?...

HollywoodNews.com: Cyndi Lauper is a savvy survivor. Of course, she’s not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And it’s a scandal. Lauper is the real deal. Not only does she have the hits, she’s also a multi talented musician and composer who constantly reinvents herself.
On Wednesday night, she showed off her latest invention: the blues. Her new album, “Memphis Blues,” is the genuine artifact, made with loving care and the actual musicians. In concert at Town Hall, she brought along not only legendary Charlie Musselwhite but also the great Allen Toussaint as guest stars. You’ve never seen Madonna do this before a show started: Lauper, eyes welling up, introduced her amazing band and then said what an honor it was to play with them.
It’s really a tribute to Lauper that she’s been able to adapt to the blues.

It got contentious in the boardroom on last night's "The Celebrity Apprentice" between Holly Robinson Peete and Cyndi Lauper, with Cyndi coming out on the short end of the stick when Donald Trump uttered the dreaded words, "Cyndi, you're fired." For Cyndi, there was no sorrow in hearing them. She had had enough. The morning after she says, "I didn't want to participate in that kind of thing any more with Holly. It was too much. Sometimes there is a lot of backstabbing. I like to be straight ahead. I couldn't do it anymore." That said, Cyndi has no regrets that she took part in "The Celebrity Apprentice." For one thing, it reconnected her with Sharon Osbourne; for another, she feels she got an education in how to work with different kinds of people. "I still would keep my demeanor of being very straightforward," she says. "That show got a little too talk-behind-your-back.
