Drama, suspense, thrill, and glory! All emotions run high during the March Madness season. The NCAA college basketball league is a month-long ritual that fans eagerly await every year. However, the championship tournament had been through various transformations before reaching this magnitude of popularity. So how did this madness start? Let’s have an insight into how March Madness evolved to this date.
The Advent of March Madness
The NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament kickstarted in 1939 with merely eight teams. Oregon won the first championship league by defeating Ohio State. During the first matchup, your favorite sports event wasn’t “March Madness.” So, when did it get this famous title?
The Illinois high school official Henry V. Porter originated the title “March Madness” in the same year. However, he coined this term for the state’s high school game as the title of his essay in the Ihsa’s magazine.

McCarver broke into the major leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1959 at age 17 and took his final swings for the 1980 World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies. Blessed with a good eye and a disciplined approach in the batter’s box, he compiled a .271 batting average over 21 seasons and pushed the Cardinals to titles in 1964 and ’67.
The Memphis native, who also played for the Montreal Expos and Boston Red Sox, developed a strong rapport with Hall of Fame pitchers Bob Gibson and Steve Carlton, earning two All-Star appearances and a spot in the Cardinals Hall of Fame.

As a Japanese-American kid growing up in Los Angeles, Glenn Kaino was drawn to the image of Tommie Smith and John Carlos standing with arms raised on the podium of the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, during the medal presentation for the 200-meter dash. Not that he saw “the salute” live; he wasn’t yet born. But that’s how iconic the image of the two track-and-field stars had become. As an artist and the co-director of “With Drawn Arms” — streaming now — Kaino took that memory, sought Smith out and began a collaboration that led to a 2018 art exhibit and to this moving and relevant documentary.
It’s easy to see why the artist was taken with the image. There is sculptural beauty in that still life of Black protest. Smith’s black-gloved hand and right arm are raised; Carlos’s gloved hand and left arm are raised, creating, as Smith recounts,...

After more than 50 years, Olympic gold medal-winning sprinter Tommie Smith shared the full story behind his raised-fist salute atop the podium at the 1968 Olympic Games in the documentary “With Drawn Arms” — and, by doing so, offers a greater insight into the meaning behind his silent protest and its aftermath.
In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, CAA hosted a virtual conversation with Smith and filmmakers Afshin Shahidi and Glenn Kaino. The film — which is among the 240 projects that have qualified for the Oscars Best Documentary Feature race — details the legacy of Smith’s fist-raising gesture after winning the gold medal in the 200 meter race, reflecting on the domino effect his protest had both personally and on the next generation of athlete activists, like Colin Kaepernick and Megan Rapinoe (both of whom are featured in the doc).

In “Action,” the new documentary series from Showtime, multiple participants in the show compare the allure and pull of sports gambling to an addictive substance. Some casual bettors go so far as to describe the need to erase a day of unsuccessful wagers as akin to chasing a fix. Professional behavioral psychologists explain how the elation that can come with seeing a giant parlay pay off originates in the same centers in the brain that light up with any other form of pleasurable activity.
What “Action” also manages to capture is the idea that putting all sports gamblers into the same simplistic category is as misguided and counterproductive as claiming that heroin addicts and recreational vapers should be filed in the same overall camp too. Though not as immediate as something like “The Trade” and not quite as formally showy as other overviews of massive money schemes, “Action” still gives...

Have college football’s golden couple called it quits!? Reports are swirling that Alabama’s star Qb A.J. McCarron and his bikini-wearing beauty queen/Splash starlet girlfriend Katherine Webb have split. Listen up, Brent Musburger, this could be the best day of your life!

RadarOnline posted a story this morning naming Katherine’s own mother Lesley as the source of the rumor. “Yes [they've broken up],” she tells the website. “Katherine’s just trying to stay real busy.” She cited the strain of Webb’s blossoming modeling career and reality show gigs as the reason for the break-up.
But apparently mother doesn’t always know best, because according to Katherine herself, the rumors aren’t true in the slightest. “Don’t believe everything you hear…smh,” she tweeted earlier today. While a part of us is obviously glad that the couple is still intact, we’re selfishly a little...

New York, Sep 09: Rapper Eminem was spotted sharing a bizarre, humorous conversation with football announcers Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit during Espn's Michigan-Notre Dame broadcast on Saturday.
The 40-year-old was there to promote his latest single, 'Berzerk,' the New York Post reported.
When Herbstreit asked the musician about the thing that he is most excited about his upcoming album, 'Marshal Mathers LP 2,' Eminem reluctantly said 'nothing,' adding that he probably will be most excited to be done with it following the release of the album on November 5. (Ani)...

New York (AP) — Eminem made an unlikely and puzzling appearance on Espn's "Saturday Night Football" halftime show. The rap superstar, who has a new album out in the fall, appeared to promote his new single and video, "Berzerk." Sitting with Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit, Eminem seemed at first slightly confused, with his mouth hanging open. Eminem rarely does interviews, and certainly not live on Espn. Musburger asked him questions about his music and referred to him by his given name, Marshall Mathers. Said Eminem: "Live TV freaks me out a little bit." But he soon seemed to relax, saying...

Rapper and actor Eminem appeared on Espn's Saturday Night Football as Marshall Mathers, and turned in a less than enthusiastic interivew on live TV. Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit had Marshall in the broadcast booth during halftime at the Michigan – Notre Dame game. Eminem looked to be catching flies as he hemmed and hawed about his new album. “I’m really uncomfortable right now. Live TV freaks me out a little bit,” he says. “When it will be out November 5, I’ll probably be most excited to be done with it,” he says to a bemused Kirk Herbstreit. The Detroit native was asked about his Lions, a bit of lag ensued, then he stated he was all for the...

It's safe to say live TV appearances are not Eminem's shtick...at least when it comes to football halftime shows. The Detroit native popped up last night during Espn's Michigan-Notre Dame halftime show to give a sneak preview of his new music video for "Berzerk"…and went a little berserk himself. Kicking off the interview with a blank stare for about 30 seconds, Eminem said "sorry, live TV freaks me out a little bit," when he was able to snap out of his trance and realize he had been asked a question. In spite of Eminem's freak-out, sports anchors Kerk Herbstreit and Brent Musburger pressed on with the awkward interview, trying to get the rapper to talk about his...

Directed by Klay Hall
Written by Jeffrey M. Howard
USA, 2013
The story goes, per a five-part PBS documentary back in the early 2000s about the history of the Broadway musical, that when Andrew Lloyd Webber was shopping around Cats to be performed and produced in the United States, he reached out to iconic producer/director/Stephen Sondheim collaborator Harold Prince. Webber pitched Prince on Cats, inspired by T.S. Eliot’s book of feline-centric poetry, and when he was finished, Prince admitted to not grasping the deeper metaphor. Were the cats representative of the English class system? Was one of the cats a member of the royal family? What piece had Prince not figured out yet, he wondered. Webber paused, then said, “Hal. It’s about cats.”
One imagines that, if he was forced to provide details about the so-called “World of Cars,” John Lasseter would answer similarly. Does it...
