Before Morgan Spector ever put on the three-piece suit of railroad baron George Russell, he was concerned audiences might feel alienated by the opulence of HBO’s “The Gilded Age.”
“The vast majority of people just don’t have anything in common with someone like George Russell,” he says. “When I first read these scripts, it was in 2020. Bernie Sanders was still a frontrunner in the presidential campaign, and class politics were in the news. There was a sense that maybe we are tired of billionaires and their power.”
He’s not wrong for wondering just how elastic viewer tolerance would be for 19th century cultural warfare between old and new money. But Spector credits creator Julian Fellowes with recognizing the timeless appetite for sudsy yet sharp historical fiction that places privileged characters and their often-trivial problems in the context of a transformational moment in history. During the show’s second season,...

Will “The Gilded Age” find Emmys gold?
After its sophomore season, HBO’s historical drama “The Gilded Age” has entered the Emmy race with up to 37 nominations, Variety can exclusively reveal. This includes outstanding drama series, 15 main cast members and the season finale “In Terms of Winning and Losing,” which will represent director Michael Engler and scribe Julian Fellowes in their submissions.
The central couple, Bertha and George Russell, played by Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector, are contenders in the lead acting categories. Coon, an Emmy nominee for the third season of the anthology crime series “Fargo” in 2017, has a solid chance of picking up her second nom, competing against contenders Anna Sawai, Jennifer Aniston and Emma Stone. Already proving to be a big year for the actress, she could find herself in the Oscar race later this year for her remarkable performance in Azazel Jacobs’ family drama “His Three Daughters,...

Next month, when the 2024 Tony Awards for excellence in Broadway theater are handed out, hair and wig designer Nikiya Mathis will be honored with a Special Tony for her work on the acclaimed play Jaja’s African Hair Braiding, Jocelyn Bioh’s seriocomic celebration of West African immigrant hair braiders in Harlem who create masterpieces atop the heads of the neighborhood woman.
Anyone who saw Mathis’ marvelous wig creations will understand immediately why she is one of three recipients this year of Special Tony Awards, non-competitive honors bestowed by Tony organizers for productions, artists and organizations who do not fall into any of the competitive categories.
But what many in the theater community don’t understand is why Mathis or any of her design colleagues in wig, hair and makeup can’t simply compete in a category devoted to their artistry and work. And some of those designers, along with...

What's the best Disney villain song? I love Scar's devious rallying call "Be Prepared" from "The Lion King." For the feminine villains, "Mother Knows Best" from "Tangled" (sung by Tony winner Donna Murphy as Gothel) is deliciously theatrical.
Ultimately, still, the crown can't go anywhere but to "Hellfire" from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," as Claude Frollo (the late Tony Jay) sings before a searing fireplace about his lust for Romani "witch" Esmeralda (Demi Moore). Jay's mellifluous baritone was like no other — the actor's voice was so powerful it lifted the song with its echoes.
Now, the "Hunchback" soundtrack is nothing to sneer at, but "Hellfire" is on another level of daring ambition. "Out There" (by Tom Hulce as Quasimodo) is the "yearning song" seen in many a Disney movie, a la "Part of Your World" from "The Little Mermaid" or "Belle's Reprise" from "Beauty and the Beast." Esmeralda's...

“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins.
Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Hmm, a two-person cast losing to a 34-person ensemble? Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

Jonathan Frakes' 1998 film "Star Trek: Insurrection" was about a remote planet called Ba'ku, the home of a gentle colony of farmers who, thanks to a quirk of the planet's radioactive rings, can live healthily for centuries. A shady species called the Son'a have teamed up with Starfleet to harvest the radiation from the Ba'ku homeworld and forcibly relocate the citizens. Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) feels that the forced relocation of the Ba'ku is morally wrong under the circumstances, and stages the titular insurrection.
The film climaxed with Picard and the Son'a captain Ru'afo (F. Murray Abraham) fighting one another for control of the radiation collector. Picard was in his 60s and Ru'afo's body and face had been ruined by many years of cosmetic surgery. While Picard and Ru'afo engaged in a fistfight, Commander Riker (Frakes) battled a Son'a ship using scooped-up explosive gases as a weapon. On the planet below,...

The Gilded Age stars Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon go way back — they first shared the Broadway stage in 1984, when the Tony-winning Baranski played mother to Nixon in Tom Stoppard’s acclaimed play The Real Thing. “Who’s this young, gifted, charming woman?” Baranski recalls of first working with Nixon, who — nearly 40 years after their first collaboration — now plays Ada Brook, the sister to Baranski’s Agnes van Rhijn on Julian Fellowes’ historical HBO drama.
“I was already in awe of her,” says Nixon of working with her scene partner decades ago. “I was basically a kid, but we’re only 14 years apart. She was way too young to be my mother, but that didn’t occur to me at the time.”
Adds Baranski with a laugh: “I loved playing her mother, and now I’m her older sister. Don’t you love showbiz?”

Jonathan Frakes' 1998 film "Star Trek: Insurrection" is hardly the most celebrated of the 13 extant "Star Trek" movies. The film wasn't terribly well-reviewed when it was released, and a general fan consensus seems to dictate that it may be the least of the four films based on "Star Trek: The Next Generation."
Notably, "Insurrection" looks cheap. The bulk of the film's action takes place on the Ba'ku homeworld, but the filmmakers were unable to do anything to make it look appropriately alien. The exteriors were filmed in Thousand Oaks, California, as well as the Sierra Nevada mountain range, and, well, it looks like they just shot the film in California. Additionally, the Ba'ku were given no alien makeup, leaving them looking like regular old people. Worst of all, the Ba'ku costume designs were unbearably boring, as everyone was draped in loose-fitting, off-white hippie-wear that even mannequins would be embarrassed by.

Throughout "Star Trek," Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) has engaged in precious few romances. Early in "Star Trek: The Next Generation," he reunited with an old flame (Michelle Phillips) in the episode "We'll Always Have Paris," and it was implied that he had a fling years earlier with a lawyer (Amanda McBroom) in "The Measure of a Man," but those relationships concluded before "Next Generation" began. Of course, Picard had a wild dalliance with Vash (Jennifer Hetrick) in "Captain's Holiday," lived out a life with his imagined wife (Margot Rose) in "The Inner Light," had a time-travel fling with a classmate (J.C. Brandy) in "Tapestry," and had a very palpable romance with Lieutenant Commander Nella Darren (Wendy Hughes) in "Lessons."
Oh yes, and Picard was very clearly attracted to Lwaxana Troi (Majel Barrett), and throughout "Next Generation," Picard and Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) shared a professional regard through a definite romantic undercurrent.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 2 finale.] Everything has changed after The Gilded Age Season 2 finale. Sunday’s episode revealed the victor of the opera war, confirmed a new but long-suspected romance, and delivered a Van Rhijn family cliffhanger in the final seconds that won’t be addressed until the potential third season of the HBO period drama. The Gilded Age Season 2 was delightfully fun TV with every episode, building and improving upon the Season 1 foundation. Fans (and we) are already clamoring for a renewal, but that’s a ways away. For now, let’s dive into the delicious Gilded Age finale twists with Louisa Jacobson (Marian Brook), executive producer/writer Sonja Warfield, series creator Julian Fellowes, and more. Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) and Mrs. Astor’s (Donna Murphy) opera war came to a head in Episode 8. After much social campaigning and private plotting — and some battles won by the queen of...

“I don’t understand. Are you and Mrs. Astor friends or rivals?” Gladys Russell (Taissa Farmiga) asks her mother in a recent episode of The Gilded Age. “The two are not exclusive,” Bertha (Carrie Coon) responds without missing a beat.
Bertha struggled in the first season to be considered without disdain. Now, she is the master of this game, going up against high-society maven Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy) rather than courting her attention. The exchange between mother and daughter sums up how the ongoing opera wars are turning a frenemy dynamic into a socialite feud. In doing so, the HBO series from Julian Fellowes has hit a glorious stride worthy of the Sunday night slot, tapping into an irresistible mix of petty quarrels, lavish parties, and captivating couture.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 4, “Duke It Out.”] Carrie Coon‘s Bertha Russell is fighting two battles in The Gilded Age Season 2: her public opera war with Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy) and her private battle with Enid Turner/Mrs. Winterton (Kelley Curran). Episode 4 proved she’s currently winning both. After a famous playwright came to town in Episode 3, the Manhattan elite were visited by the English Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb) in Episode 4, and the Russells and the Wintertons were both competing for the prize of his attention. The Wintertons knew the Duke from their time across the pond, but Bertha wouldn’t give her former lady’s maid — and would-be seductress of her husband, George (Morgan Spector) — the satisfaction of the public notoriety that would come with sitting next to him at dinner. She switched their name cards, which was enough to make Turner seethe across ...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 2, “Some Sort of Trick.”] Unlike the inherited titles of Julian Fellowes‘ Downton Abbey nobles, his American characters of The Gilded Age can fight their way to the top of society. Bertha (Carrie Coon) and George Russell (Morgan Spector) have succeeded at that as the leaders of the new-money crowd, and Bertha’s fighting for a more permanent spot in Season 2’s “opera war” with old money queen bee Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy). But the downstairs staff of these wealthy New York City homes experience more than their fair share of class struggles and triumphs. The Gilded Age Season 1 revealed that Russell employee Mr. Watson (Michael Cerveris) had a much different past life (and name). Viewers learn more about his untold story in The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 2, which reveals that he was once a very wealthy man named Mr. Collier before he lost his fortune...

It’s been virtually 100 years to the day since Walt Disney’s animated mouse took the wheel of a steamship and steered himself into immortality. But for anyone who grew up watching Disney movies that might seem surprisingly recent. Since near its very inception, Walt Disney Animation Studios has evoked a timeless sensibility which seems eternal and everlasting. With likely your parents and grandparents growing up on Disney movies, the studio’s brand of hand-drawn magic has always been there in the background of living memory. But every magic has its dark side… and the shadows cast by the House of Mouse have always been faintly more sinister than parents remember until they put a little one in front of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs or Fantasia. You show a child Chernabog for the first time, and I’ll show you a week of nightmares.

It has been a long 19 months since we’ve been able to luxuriate in a withering line from Christine Baranski’s Agnes van Rhijn, but fans of “The Gilded Age” may now celebrate as the HBO drama has returned with its second season. After the first batch of episodes ended with Carrie Coon’s social climber Bertha Russell making significant inroads with “old money” New York, these new episodes will find her at odds with the old guard once again as they go head-to-head with rivaling opera houses. The season premiere aired on Oct. 29 on HBO and streamed on Max.
With such an operatic season arc and its many other subplots, “The Gilded Age” has avoided a sophomore slump. As of this writing, the show has a 74 score on Metacritic, indicating “generally favorable” reviews. It is also certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 94% freshness score, with their critical consensus reading,...

The Gilded Age Season Two begins with hats. Lots and lots and lots of hats. It is Easter Sunday, and all the women of 1880s New York society are putting on their fanciest headgear before heading to church. And by far the most fabulous hat of all is the one you can see in the picture at the top of this review, a towering concoction of feathers and flowers, placed atop the head of the show’s richest woman, Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon).

Bertha Russell is staring out the window at the falling rain. Perched a few feet away, anxiously waiting, is her guest, but Mrs. Russell (played by Carrie Coon) pays her little mind. One gets the sense she could’ve stood there peacefully for 10 minutes, maybe 20, without eliciting any questions from the invited woman (a character best left unnamed), but a TV show can rarely ask its audience to sit in silence for that long, so Bertha pivots to her prey and dispatches with her quickly. “Some gossip has reached me that I confess I find disquieting,” she says, swatting away a follow-up query meant to steer focus to a separate topic. Instead, Bertha continues apace, proceeding to annihilate her visitor, bluntly laying out her failings before making clear she has no room for recourse. She will do what Bertha demands, or she will be further embarrassed — perhaps in public, rather...

There’s ample gold leaf in Season 2 of Julian Fellowes’ “The Gilded Age,” miles of flashy yardage, a flock of feathered hats and swoon-worthy Fifth Avenue ballrooms. Amid a horrifying month in world news, it’s a relief to reenter the world of “The Gilded Age,” where problems are something to be gossiped about over lawn tennis in Newport. In Julian Fellowes’ opulent, HBO-funded take on 19th century New York, the recently concluded Civil War takes up a fraction of the real estate devoted to the Opera War, a brewing fight for patronage and prestige between the establishment-favored Academy of Music and the upstart Metropolitan. Can new money arriviste Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) go head-to-head with grande dame Caroline Astor (Donna Murphy)? Can Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) be gainfully employed as an art teacher and maintain her prospects as a marriageable young woman? Can Marian’s aunt Ada (Cynthia Nixon), much to the horror of her sister Agnes (Christine Baranski), serve soup at a luncheon? What a privilege it is to contemplate these questions, or even share...

HBO's "The Gilded Age" is back for season two, and we couldn't be more excited. Created by "Downton Abbey"'s Julian Fellowes, the historical drama depicts the lives of high society in late-1800s New York City. Season one was jam-packed with drama but if you're not a history buff, you might wonder if the show is based on a true story, or if it's totally fiction. While the main characters are made up, the setting and era that the story explores definitely are not.
Here's a breakdown of the true story behind "The Gilded Age."
What Was The Gilded Age?
The last few decades of the 1800s were coined "The Gilded Age." In general, the era was marked by the rapid growth of industry, an influx of European working-class immigrants, and growing wealth inequality. As a result, railroads and related industries exploded, labor accidents rose sharply, and trusts began forming,...

For a series stuffed to the gills with Tony Award-winning actors, it makes perfect sense that the second season of “The Gilded Age” would find its ensemble embroiled in a plot over dueling opera houses. As Carrie Coon’s social climber Bertha Russell says at the beginning of the new trailer, “I intend to bring the great city of New York the opera house it deserves.” That development puts her at odds once again with the moneyed old guard of the city, played by Christine Baranski and Donna Murphy. It opens with Bertha lamenting over the old money keeping the new money crowd at arm’s length “with impunity.” Knowing Bertha, this will never fly, so she sets her sights on making the new Metropolitan Opera house the go-to music venue of the season. Mrs. Astor and Agnes are not so keen on her fighting spirit and the change it threatens to bring. “That’s it: head to head, and one will be the winner,” Bertha declares of the...

Yesterday was Star Trek day, marking the anniversary of Star Trek’s debut on tv in 1966. Since then, the series has spawned so much content that what’s considered the “best Trek” or “Worst Trek” is divisive. But, as far as the big screen movies go, one that remains divisive is 1998’s Star Trek: Insurrection. In 1996, Star Trek First Contact proved to be a sizeable hit for Paramount Pictures, with the action-packed addition to the franchise grossing a strong $92 million domestically and another $54 million abroad. Industry insider Daniel Richtman is firing up the old rumor mill this Monday by saying Disney is looking for Elvis filmmaker Baz Luhrmann to helm its live-action adaptation of Tangled. While there has yet to be an official word from Disney about Luhrmann boarding the project, rumblings about a live-action adaptation of Tangled have circulated for weeks. In addition to Luhrmann potentially eyeing the director’s chair, Richtman says Florence Pugh is up to play the lead with sentient locks.
It’s worth noting that even though Richtman’s prediction track record is impressive, industry vet Jeff Sneider says Richtman’s been ill-informed about details related to Disney‘s live-action version of Tangled. While I could see Luhrmann directing, I find it hard to believe Pugh would star as Rapunzel. What do you think?
In Disney’s 2010 animated masterpiece, the magically long-haired Rapunzel spends her entire life in a tower.
