On March 26 1969, on a quiet country road outside Biloxi, Mississippi, John Kennedy Toole took his own life. Aged just 31, the literary professor and author left behind two unpublished novels. Over the course of the next decade, Toole’s grieving mother Thelma dedicated her life to ensuring the second of these, “A Confederacy Of Dunces,” found publication. Eventually, she succeeded, and the New Orleans-set picaresque tale of slovenly philosopher and medievalist Ignatius J. Reilly went on to sell over two million copies and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1981, making Toole one of only three writers to win the prize posthumously.
Almost as much as the book itself, readers were intrigued by the unique journey the novel took to publication, with a flamboyant yet grief-stricken mother dedicating what remained of her life to ensuring her son’s genius was recognized by the world.

Josh Mostel is someone that many people can probably say they remember, at least by appearance, while his name might escape them for various reasons. But taking into account that he’s been just about as famous on stage as he has on-screen, it’s pretty easy to think that he’s easier to remember due to his performances since he’s rather skilled when it comes to his craft. Hollywood has no shortage of big men such as Josh but there are different reasons why a lot of them are remembered and while it’s sad to think that some of them are remembered

Chicago – In 1973, director Norman Jewison fashioned a radical film version of the rock opera/Broadway show “Jesus Christ Superstar,” and the cinematic innovations plus stellar cast equaled a timeless movie musical classic. Josh Mostel portrayed King Herod and Barry Dennen was Pontius Pilate in the iconic film.
Jesus Christ Superstar (Jcs) began it’s life as a rock opera, a concept record released in 1969 with Ian Gillan of the rock group Deep Purple singing the part of Jesus. Two key members of the album’s cast went on to do the film … Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene and Barry Dennen as Pontius Pilate. The Broadway show adaptation opened two years later, and the 1973 film followed with Ted Neeley as Jesus.

John Sayles’ coal strike epic is grand American filmmaking bolstered by fine Haskell Wexler cinematography, great performances by dedicated actors, and a screenplay that avoids the common pitfalls of liberal filmmaking — by assuming the structure of an action Western. Filmed on a shoestring not far from the site of historical events, the pro- Union picture revs up viewer emotions, winding up as a moving, satisfying experience. Matewan’s been out of circulation far too long, but those that remember it will give it a high recommendation.

Looking back on the previous century, we see that the good ole’ U.S. of A. gave birth (or at least nursed and nurtured) several, vibrant art forms. A revered trio springs to mind, ones originally looked down upon by “the cultural elite”, but now celebrated worldwide. There’s jazz, graphic sequential story art (a “fancy-schmancy” term for comic strips and comic books) and the theatrical musical comedy. And amongst the hundreds produced (many barely made it past opening night), a couple of dozen or so could be called perennials ,shows that are constantly revived on the “great white way” while still being staples of community theatres, along with colleges, high schools, and even middle or “grammar” schools. Of those, the Rogers and Hammerstein classics get the most “play”, followed closely by another duo, Lerner and Lowe. Then there are those singular classics from the 50s and 60s that may...

Regina King is a hugger. “I’m so glad you saw this movie,” she said to one well-wisher after another. Then they got the warm embrace. This was the after-party following a Manhattan screening of “If Beale Street Could Talk.” The lower level of P.J. Clarke’s across from Lincoln Center was packed. Playwright and filmmaker Kenneth Lonergan was on one side of the room, while Josh Mostel was tucked in a back booth. And throughout the place, normally jaded academy voters seemed genuinely starstruck by King and co-star Stephan James.
James worked the room effortlessly, but King was dead center and the core of the party. “I want everyone to see it,” she repeated to me. “I haven’t made a movie in years. And plenty have come across my desk. This film gives the audience affirmation and a hug.” The film hugs too!

In our second feature of “obscure movie character I love” I’d like to center our attention on actor Josh Mostel who you might remember from the movie City Slickers. He was one half of the faux Ben and Jerry’s team “Ira and Barry’s.” He’s the guy that played Barry Sholowitz. Mostel has 61 credits to his name and can certainly be in our “That guy actor” segment as well. But I’d like to focus on his character in Billy Madison. Mostel played none other than Principal Max Anderson who was the principal at the elementary school Billy Madison attended in

“Money talks nobody walks.” As part of this year’s Greater St. Louis Humanities Festival – which runs from Sept. 23-Oct. 2, and whose theme is “E Pluribus Unum?” – Cinema St. Louis presents a free screening Monday, September 26 at 7 Pm of writer/director John Sayles’ masterful City Of Hope (1991), which compellingly explores the racial attitudes and socioeconomic forces that divide the citizens of the fictional (but all too realistic) Hudson City, N.J.
An ambitious, richly detailed panorama of a city in decline – and rapidly approaching crisis – City Of Hope addresses urban decay in the United States by poking around in Hudson City’s political garbage, turning over and exposing the contaminated dirt of patronage, bribery, and special interests, demonstrating how the toxins trickle down to the middle class and poor, seep into our attitudes, and poison our thoughts. The sprawling cast includes actors from the director’s informal stock company – Joe Morton,...

'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' poster. With Daniel Radcliffe. Rupert Grint. Emma Watson. 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' quiz question: Does state-of-the-art CGI equal movie magic? (Oscar Movie Series) Alfonso Cuarón seems like an odd choice for director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third installment in the Harry Potter movie series. That is, if one thinks only of Cuarón's pre-Harry Potter sleeper hit, the François Truffaut-esque Y tu mamá también, while ignoring two of his earlier efforts, the critically acclaimed A Little Princess and the moderately respected Great Expectations. This time around, working with a reported $130 million budget (approx. $163 million in 2015), state-of-the-art special effects, and the Harry Potter franchise, Cuarón surely could do no wrong. At the box office, that is. For although Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is stylistically superior to Chris Columbus' previous work in the series,...

Chicago – The TV show “Get Smart,” which had its original run on the NBC network from 1965-1970, was an oddball classic. Created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, the sitcom was a goofy satire on cold war politics of the 1960s, with a hapless operative named Maxwell Smart (Don Adams) working for the Control agency, spying against a foreign menace called Kaos. Barbara Feldon (Agent 99) and Bernie Kopell (Sigfried) were part of the supporting cast.

Chicago – To answer the musical question, “Baby, if you ever wondered, wondered whatever became of me?” there is the sublime Loni Anderson, who portrayed Jennifer Marlowe on the popular 1970s sitcom, “Wkrp in Cincinnati.” Anderson was an attendee of “The Hollywood Show,” which comes to Chicago again on September 7th and 8th, 2013.
Loni Anderson is much like her character on Wkrp – luminous, intelligent and with a unique perspective. She climbed the show business ladder herself, after having a first marriage and a child in her teens. After that marriage ended before her 21st birthday, she finished college at the University of Minnesota and started an acting career, taking roles on stage and in local and national commercials. After moving to Los Angeles in 1975, she dyed her jet black hair to blonde, and began a series of high profile appearances on familiar dramas and comedies of the era, including “The Bob Newhart Show” and “Police Woman.

Teachers' Second Jobs: Educators Doing Double Duty From 'Varsity Blues' To 'Warrior' (Photos/Videos)
With a slow economy and many spouses out of work, there's an enormous percentage of school teachers taking second jobs in recent years. That means the new Kevin James comedy, "Here Comes the Boom," is quite relevant. And not just for national financial reasons, but also for issues with the American education system as well. In the movie, James plays a biology teacher and former collegiate wrestler who returns to the ring for extra money as a mixed martial arts fighter in order to save his school's music program. It wasn't always like this. Searching through the history of cinema and television, we don't come up with a lot of teachers who needed extra income. Some of those who could compare to James's character include Principal Anderson (Josh Mostel) in “Billy Madison,” who was a wrestler before becoming an educator but not simultaneously. When discovered, Anderson was very embarrassed, though...
