Beta Cinema is launching international sales in Cannes for director Fatih Akin’s upcoming film “Amrum,” which starts shooting in Hamburg Monday. The film stars Jasper Billerbeck, Laura Tonke and Diane Kruger.
“Amrum” will be released in German theaters in September 2025, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
It is set on the island of Amrum in spring 1945. Seal hunting, fishing at night, toiling in the fields – nothing is too dangerous or too arduous for 12-year-old Nanning to help his mother feed the family in the final days of World War II. With the longed-for peace, however, completely new conflicts arise, and Nanning must learn to find his own way.
The story is based on the childhood memories of German director and screenwriter Hark Bohm. Akin said: “What began as a Hark Bohm film now becomes my 12th feature film and an extraordinary mission: ‘Amrum’ is the journey of young Nanning, who...

The thriller will star Lucas Gregorowicz, Katharina Schüttler and Denis Moschitto. Martin Hawie and Laura Harwarth (screenwriter of Toro) are currently working on the gansgter drama Die Zukunft ist ein einsamer Ort [The future is a lonely place]. The film will center on Frank, a man who attacks a money transporter and willingly turns himself in, for no comprehensible reason. In prison, he meets Fuad, a convict protected by his clan. Aiming to get closer to him, Frank gets involved in the drug business and has to face both his Arab and his German inmates. He only becomes emotionally attached to Susanna, one of the guards. Yet Frank – who has in fact entered the prison seeking revenge against Fuad because he considers him responsible for the death of his wife and child in a car accident – doesn’t know that Susanna and Fuad are having a sexual...
A major presale has been signed for “Bella Germania,” and fittingly for a sweeping tale of Italian immigrants in Germany, it has been picked up by Rai. The Italian pubcaster will play it on its flagship free-tv station Rai Uno and is expected to launch it this summer.
Spanning several generations, “Bella Germania” comprises three 90-minute episodes. It traces the fortunes of the first wave of Italian immigrants to Germany, from the 1960s and encompasses the present day. It is told through the eyes of the new arrivals and the people they meet and fall in love with, and traces their lives as they become part of the fabric of their new home.
The cast includes Natalia Belitski, Silvia Busuioc, Alessandro Bressanello and Denis Moschitto.
The miniseries captures the international TV zeitgeist. Germany has emerged as an international drama hot-spot, with such shows as “Dark,” “Deutschland 83” and “Das Boot” churning up global sales,...

Chicago – In one of the more truthful and contemporary films of 2017, “In the Fade” is a German/French production about the fallout due to a terrorist act. What it also emphasizes is the generated hatred, frustration and waste of such acts, and its textual story is stunning and distressing.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
Diane Kruger portrays the victim of terrorism in the film. She is an international actor who has appeared in American films (“Inglourious Basterds,” “National Treasure”) and completely owns the tenor of what happens in this period of her character’s life. It is a classic collaboration between her and the director/co-writer Fatih Akin, running through a horrid laundry list of dreaded emotional reactions, while also expressing the toughness and need-for-help that is necessary to survive. As a statement about terrorism, it is an ultimate one in a sense, as to where we will all end up if it continues.

"...'Katja', married to 'Nuri Sekerci' has a 5-year-old son, living in Hamburg, Germany.
"She first met Nuri when she was a student and bought hash from him, then marrying him when he was serving time in prison for drug trafficking.
"Studying while in prison, Nuri is released, to work at a translation and tax office.
"She drops their son off at her husband’s office in the afternoon. When Katja returns for him in the evening, she finds the road blocked. A policeman tells her that a man and a child have been killed in an attack, that they say is not terrorism, but revenge from drug traffickers.
"Katja is so despndent she sees no reason to continue living...until she decides on taking revenge.

"They'll be punished, I promise you." Magnolia has unveiled an official Us trailer for Fatih Akin's In the Fade, a dramatic thriller starring Diane Kruger. Kruger won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival this year, where the film played in competition. She stars as a German woman named Katja, who goes for revenge after a bombing that kills her husband and son. The cast includes Numan Acar, Ulrich Tukur, Johannes Krisch, Siir Eloglu, Denis Moschitto, Jessica McIntyre, and Ulrich Brandhoff. This is going to be a very divisive, likely controversial film - because of what it addresses and what happens and how it all plays out. It's a fascinating, emotion-fueled film worth discussing. I saw this in Cannes and I think it's an impressive film with a hell of a performance by Kruger. This trailer gives away a lot, watch out. Here's the new official Us...

There’s been a very low, but noticeable simmer of awards season talk surrounding “In The Fade.” The latest from director Fatih Akin features Diane Kruger in the lead role, and by all accounts, she gives a ferocious turn in a drama that’s eerily timely.
Co-starring Denis Moschitto, Numan Acar and Johannes Krisch, the story follows a woman who becomes widowed after her husband and son are killed in a bombing plotted by a young, neo-Nazi couple.

Get a glimpse at one of the films playing at Cannes. A French teaser trailer has debuted for the German film titled In the Fade, directed by German-Turkish filmmaker Fatih Akin. This just premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday, to mostly positive reviews from critics. Prominent German actress Diane Kruger stars in what is apparently her very first German role playing a woman named Katja, who goes for revenge after a bombing that kills her husband and son. The cast includes Numan Acar, Ulrich Tukur, Johannes Krisch, Siir Eloglu, Denis Moschitto, Jessica McIntyre, and Ulrich Brandhoff. I saw this film at Cannes and I think it's a great film, playing strong on emotions but also providing much to think about. I always appreciate films that can inspire good discussions, and this is definitely one that will. Here's the first international teaser trailer (+ poster) for Fatih Akin's In the Fade,...

Fatih Akin has had a directorial trajectory that oscillates between the compelling and raw Head-On to the less successful Armenian genocide movie The Cut via the joys of Soul Kitchen. In the Fade sees Akin in his native Hamburg tackling racism and the burgeoning far right extremism.
The film opens with Nuri Sekerci (Numan Acar), wearing a white suit and black shirt reminiscent of Tony Manero, is heading out of his prison cell and into marriage with Katja (Diane Kruger). The jostling and joshing inmates cheering him on his way is a joy. From here we jump ahead a few years and see the two happily ensconced in a beautiful home with a lovely six-year-old son Rocco. Nuri has a legitimate business and Katja is a stay-at-home mum. But when a bomb explodes and kills her family, we wonder how legitimate Nuri was and where all the money came from.

Closed Circuit starts off with a literal bang, as an explosion at a crowded London market leads to the arrest of suspected terrorist Farroukh Erdogan (Denis Moschitto). Before the "trial of the century" starts, Erdogan's lawyer suddenly dies—suspicious much?—so a new defense attorney, Martin Rose (Eric Bana), steps in. Because of some classified evidence, the government appoints an additional defense attorney, Claudia Simmons-Howe (Rebecca Hall), who's prohibited from talking to Erdogan or his lawyer. One problem: Claudia and Martin just happen to be ex-lovers, and that's out of order, Your Honor! Can these two keep their gavel banging a secret? Will their guilty-pleasure behavior make...

Closed Circuit is being billed as the new Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and though I disagree in the long run with that comparison I see what they mean. Closed Circuit seeks to wrap the audience around a web of political intrigue and espionage amongst a drab and dreary British setting with characters who may or may not be what they seem, yet where Tinker was a stoical ode to the analog 70s spy game this film tries to melodramatically incorporate the omniscient eye of CCTV for the self-evident conclusion that we’re always being watched. It’s Le Carre-lite, and doesn’t have one iota of the subtlety or adeptness of Tomas Alfedson’s 2011 adaptation of Tinker. Instead, Closed Circuit is an exposition-heavy boilerplate thriller with some interesting casting choices whose main success is being able to make the tangles of the British legal system somewhat interesting.

As you might expect, Closed Circuit opens with CCTV images of a central London market — showing us families, teenagers, vendors going about their business. It’s not the first time this year that we’ve been asked to see things through the eyes of the all-seeing security state, but in this case, the illusion of control is shattered when a terrorist bomb blows the place to smithereens. And that quick opening juxtaposition turns out to be a central one for this legal thriller, which isn’t so much about the deep state doing deep evil things so much as it is about one trying to cover up its own incompetence. The actual setup, though, is pretty high-concept. Three Days of Ardour: Crowley’s Political Thriller Blunderbuss
There’s considerable promise at the beginning of Closed Circuit, employing a sort of Mike Figgis cam of multiple frames, collapsed in a violent explosion that unites all angles in death. But quickly, John Crowley’s fast paced tale meant more as a criticism of Britain’s judicial system as an enemy unto itself rather than as a treatise on acts of terrorism, begins establishing ridiculous plot developments that recalls those pulpy John Grisham adaptations of the 90s replete with romantically involved lead characters.
One harried November morning, a bomb goes off in a London market which causes many fatalities. Only one of the responsible members of the terrorist cell is apprehended, Farroukh Erdogan (Denis Moschitto), along with his wife and teenage son. What promises to be the trial of the century is complicated by the government’s decision to use classified evidence to prosecute Erdogan,...

If you like the courtroom dramas of John Grisham or the espionage of John LeCarre, you may dig the new political thriller Closed Circuit. It begins with a bang – during the opening credits, the screen is broken into an increasing number of closed circuit camera displays trained on an outdoor London marketplace. A truck explodes killing 120 people. One member of the suspected terrorist cell survives: Farroukh Erdogan (Denis Moschitto), who’s promptly arrested and jailed. Preparations begin for the trial but there’s a hitch: the government will use classified evidence to prosecute Erdogan, evidence so super top secret that neither he nor his lawyers can be allowed to see it. Hence the need for the Attorney General (Jim Broadbent) to appoint Claudia Simmons-Howe (Rebecca Hall) as Special Advocate, an additional government-approved defense lawyer, one who has clearance to see classified evidence and who can argue for its full disclosure...

Chicago – The threat of terrorist acts defies security. That is a fundamental truth. With 7 billion people on the planet – and an infinite number of motivations within them – all the security cameras, techniques and agencies cannot stop a determined group or individual, as depicted in “Closed Circuit.”
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The film presents a fictional terrorist scenario in London – a market bombing – and dissects it through the legal defense team that will try to determine their client’s connection to the crime. The complex story uncovers a web of deceit and cover-up, and the British government is involved. But basically the film speaks to power – the power of determination over bureaucracy, the power of secrets over truth and the power of a societal structure that allows governmental agencies to freely spend and develop terrorist preventatives that ultimately are just cover-thy-butt procedures.
The film begins with the multiple points-of-view familiar to closed circuit security cameras.

Percolating without ever boiling over, Closed Circuit is a British conspiracy drama that's content to serve a cup of room-temperature tea, sit back, and shake its head with mild disapproval. What a pity, eh? The title refers to the closed circuit cameras that blanket London, and the efficient direction by John Crowley (Intermission, Boy A) makes constant reference to them and the unseen observers who are always watching. The original screenplay by Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things, Eastern Promises) feels ripped from the headlines: 140 people are killed when a bomb explodes in a busy market. The only surviving suspect, Farroukh Erdogan (Denis Moschitto), is held for trial; the British government decides that top secret evidence will be used to prosecute him, but it is...

In the international suspense thriller Closed Circuit, a high-profile terrorism case unexpectedly binds together two ex-lovers on the defense team – testing the limits of their loyalties and placing their lives in jeopardy.
One morning, a busy London market is decimated by an explosion. In the manhunt that follows, only one member of the suspected terrorist cell survives: Farroukh Erdogan (Denis Moschitto), who is arrested and jailed. Preparations begin for what promises to be the trial of the century.
But there’s a hitch: the government will use classified evidence to prosecute Erdogan, evidence so secret that neither he nor his lawyers can be allowed to see it. Hence the need for the Attorney General (Jim Broadbent) to appoint a Special Advocate, an additional government-approved defense lawyer (Claudia Simmons-Howe, played by Golden Globe Award nominee Rebecca Hall), one who has clearance to see classified evidence and who can argue for its...

While we all hear the title Closed Circuit and hope it means that we’re finally getting a Short Circuit threequel, alas we’re not. Nope, Johnny 5 won’t be taking on terrorists in this upcoming thriller from director John Crawley. Luckily, Eric Bana is on the case and you can check out his mixed accent and broodiness in the latest trailer, below.
Bana plays a high profile lawyer who together with his ex-girlfriend, played by Rebecca Hall, finds himself on the defense team for a terrorism suspect. With a starry cast in tow the trailer points towards the flick being an intelligent alternative to the usual popcorn fare offered up during the summer season. Joining Bana and Hall are Ciaran Hinds, Jim Broadbent, Anne-Marie Duff, Julia Stiles, Riz Ahmed, Kenneth Cranham and Denis Moschitto.

Berlin – "John Rabe," an historic biopic about the German business man who saved 200,000 Chinese civilians from the Nanking massacre, is the front runner for this year's German Film Awards – or Lolas – with seven nominations.
The film's nominations include best film, best director for Florian Gallenberger and a best actor for star Ulrich Tukur as Rabe.
Steve Buscemi also picked up a nomination as best supporting actor for his role as an idealistic American doctor who helps Rabe. It was one of the few Lola nominations ever given to a non-German actor.
Uli Edel's Golden Globe and Oscar-nominated terrorist drama "The Baader Meinhof Complex" picked up four Lola noms, including best film and best actress for Johanna Wokalek.
"Chiko," a gangster movie by first time director Ozgur Yildirim, surprised many by also nabbing a best film nom along with ones for Yildirim's screenplay, for lead actor Denis Moschitto and for editor Sebastian Thumler.

BERLIN -- Two not very bright would-be crooks take on a big-time drug supplier with predictable results in Ozgur Yildirim's gritty but unpleasant crime story "Chiko".
The title is the name that Isa (Denis Moschitto) has tattooed on his forearm in a flamboyant font that declares his determination to overcome his shortness of stature and brainpower to get rich. He and former junky buddy Tibet (Volkan Ozcan) knock over a front man for dealer Brownie (Moritz Bleibtreu) in order to gain his attention and get a job.
It works, but the kingpin immediately grasps Chiko's main problem. "Your friend will fuck you up", he tells him. Yildirim points his screenplay in that direction so obviously that it's just a matter of when and how.
The setting amid Turkish immigrants in Germany is atmospheric, and the grim and violent episodes familiar in such tales are quite well done. There's nothing fresh in the story, however, and the characters are all so dumb and nasty that audiences will be hard to come by.
Chiko is the more ruthless of the ambitious pair though not, as it turns out, ruthless enough. He spouts the usual moronic demand for respect while doing nothing to earn it. Tibet is more of a dimwit who believes that so long as he's found God then he can get away with pretty much anything. After they beat up one of the drug dealer's men and take his stash, they go to the mosque to pray.
They care for each other a bit more than either of them would choose to admit, and they're mama's boys, with Chiko effectively adopted by Tibet's sick mom who desperately needs new kidneys.
Brownie is impressed with Chiko's impertinence and puts him on trial, selling 10 keys of hashish in 10 days. When Tibet rips off a gram from each packet and starts peddling the stuff at playgrounds, Brownie dishes out a harsh lesson.
That sets the two young men on disparate paths as Chiko goes on to lucrative coke-dealing with enough cash to indulge in expensive bling, a fancy apartment, a hooker named Meryem (Reyhan Sahin) to share it with and a white Mercedes to impress the boys in the 'hood. Returning to his junk habit, Tibet seethes with envy and resentment.
There's only one place the story is headed, and it goes there with stark efficiency accompanied by a fair amount of blood and banal rap mixes on the soundtrack. Moschitto does his best to give Chiko some depth, and Bleibtreu makes his record-producing drug dealer fairly colorful.
Tibet, however, is a one-dimensional character that Ozcan can do little to illuminate. As the fateful end draws near, it's hard not to think they're all getting what they deserve with no reason to care.
