Gerard Butler might take the leap into an extreme sports remake of Point Break. They can - just about - lose the surfing, but here's five things that can't change, says Ellie Violet Bramley

Reports out today that Gerard Butler is in talks for the role of bodacious badguy Bodhi in a remake of 1991 action cult classic, Point Break, have left us worried. For many, this stalwart of 90s filmic history is a "holy cow that Hollywood ought to leave well alone".
But, it's too late. Kathryn Bigelow's bovine will be re-written by Kurt Wimmer, of Salt and Final Recall fame, and will be directed by The Fast and the Furious's director of photography, Ericson Core.

Watching Chasing Mavericks, the silent-era smash hit Rough Sea at Dover springs strangely to mind, with those sweet stories of early movie goers looking for somewhere to run, as the incoming waves crash perilously close to the edges of their screen. Maybe we haven’t changed so much in the last hundred years, as we watch wide-eyed as the full colour, full sound immensity of the ocean dominates the screen for much of this movie.
The filmmakers boast “some of the most mind-blowing wave footage ever captured on film”, and co-directors Michael Apted and Curtis Hanson do not disappoint. The unbounded power of the ocean depicted here brings tremendous drama to the surfing scenes, and at times it seems the unpredictability of this force, so much greater than the tiny bodies tiptoeing on their boards, might actually snap in-two, bringing the story to an unexpected end.

I recently watched a 60 Minutes Sports piece by Anderson Cooper on surfing. While I've always regarded the sport as kinda' silly, Cooper's analysis made surfing interesting to me for the first time. In that 60 Minutes Sports segment, a surfer talked about how incredible it felt to be washed around in the ocean, at the mercy of the water and the waves. What sounds terrifying also sounds quite beautiful, at least in my opinion.
Chasing Mavericks does a good job of showing the human side of these kinds of adrenaline junkies who take pleasure in being smashed around at the beach. The film centers on Jay Moriarty (Jonny Weston)'s journey to surf the mythical Maverick surf breaks. He turns to local surf legend Frosty Hesson to train him and the two take on a very father-son relationship.

Do you know how to surf? If you don't, here's your chance to learn as the owner of the sweetest board on the beach.
"Chasing Mavericks" tells the true-life tale of Jay Moriarty (Jonny Weston), a young surfer who dreams of conquering the mythic Mavericks surf break in Northern California. To help him achieve his goal, he enlists the help of Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler), a veteran hanger of ten who mentors the lad on how to ride — or at least survive — the mighty wave.
You might want to go for something a little smaller than the Mavericks when you're first starting out, though you experienced surfers might've been mulling over taking on the mega-wave yourself but have been waiting for the right board with which to do it. Whatever the particular surfing scenario, a brand-new surfboard signed by the cast of "Chasing Mavericks" — including Gerard Butler and several legendary...

Chasing Mavericks, from Director duo Michael Apted and Curtis Hanson, tells the true story of Jay Moriarty (Jonny Weston), the precocious surfing prodigy who gained fame when his wipeout at Mavericks made the cover of Surfer magazine. Only sixteen when he took on the treacherous conditions and big waves of the famed break along California’s central coast, Moriarty quickly captured the surfing community’s imagination because of his mettle and his endearing optimism.
Mavericks offers a brief slice of the life Moriarty led: the few weeks that preceded his historic ride a few miles north of Half Moon Bay. It begins with Moriarty’s discovery of the supposedly mythical break when he surreptitiously hitches a ride with his neighbor, Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler), a surfer who has been riding Mavericks for decades. Once the young stowaway catches a glimpse of towering waves he becomes obsessed: the waves become Goliath begging to be slain.

Chasing Mavericks chronicles the heroic efforts of a teenage surfer to prepare himself for challenging the "mythic" wave known as Mavericks, and the father-son bond with his mentor that develops. Poignant and inspirational, it is a solid family film that tugs the heartstrings. Written by Kario Salem and directed by Curtis Hanson (8 Mile, La Confidential), the movie is is based on the true-life story of Jay Moriarty, who became world famous when his attempt to surf Mavericks landed him on the cover of Surfer magazine.
Jonny Weston (John Dies at the End) closely resembles his character Jay, a blonde-haired blue-eyed proverbial golden boy obsessed with surfing. Abandoned by his father and raised by an alcoholic mother, Jay is forced to grow up early, even working to help pay the bills. Chasing Mavericks is the real-life story of Jay Moriarty (Jonny Weston), a surfing prodigy from Santa Cruz who made waves (ahem) in 1994 when, at the age of 16, he seemingly came out of nowhere to surf the legendary Mavericks, a particularly dangerous Northern Pacific break known for massive crests of up to 80 feet. The film informs us that Moriarty didn’t actually appear out of thin air: Instead, he was coached, with Mr. Miyagi–like steeliness, by “Frosty” Hesson (Gerard Butler), a gruff, demanding older surfer and neighbor who taught the boy all about stamina, observation, and mental discipline. In turn, Jay taught the embittered, disillusioned Frosty about perseverance and family. It’s a perfect fortune cookie of a movie, full of bland life lessons for everybody; would that there were some drama or style in it somewhere along the way.Amazingly, the stiff, barely functional direction here comes courtesy of...

Chicago – After the initial disappointment that “Chasing Mavericks” wasn’t about the pursuit of John McCain archetypes – it’s political season, don’t you know – it was interesting to note that mavericks are water waves, and chasing them means surfing. Hang ten, dudes.

Basically this film is a watery “Karate Kid’ – complete with an appearance by Elisabeth Shue – that features surfboards instead of crane kicks. Gerard Butler is the “Mr, Miyagi” surfer dude, and he sports long locks and a California accent straight out of Scotland. Wasn’t “Endless Summer’ the last word in surfing movies? How about Frankie and Annette? “Chasing Mavericks” is a harmless diversion that has stiff dialogue, fuzzy character motivations, sudden death and the audacity to be based on a true story. Besides that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the movie? Oh, that’s next week.

Over the years we’ve seen several inspirational sports biography films. Certain sports seem to lend themselves to the cinema, like boxing with Raging Bull and Ali, or baseball in The Pride Of The Yankees and The Rookie. But surfing’s a more difficult to convey on-screen. Many folks may harken back to the crude rear-projection sequences in camp 1960′s flicks like Gidget, Beach Party and their sequels. With documentaries like the first Endless Summer, new film technology allowed for an up close look at the surf pros. Chasing Mavericks is the dramatic life story of one of those pros: Jay Moriarty. In a way this is similar to a superhero story. Instead of getting a uniform and shield, we see how Jay got his wetsuit and board. It also has an element of the wise elder training the young upstart. Think Mr.Miyagi in The Karate Kid films and...

You may recognize Jonny Weston as one of the zombies in "John Dies at the End" or as the ex-boyfriend of an up-and-coming porn star in "About Cherry," but the 24-year-old is making big waves this weekend with his first leading role.
In the biopic "Chasing Mavericks," Weston plays surf legend Jay Moriarty. At the young age of 16, Moriarty became infamous for riding the Mavericks in Santa Cruz, Calif., one of the world's most dangerous surfing destinations. Weston has more than just the blonde, blue-eyed good looks and acting chops to portray Moriarty — he also happens to be an avid surfer with all the right skills for the part.
We had the chance to chat with Weston about his breakout role in "Chasing Mavericks" as well as his board-riding skills and audition experiences while paving the way to Hollywood.

If you thought a surfing movie from the directors or "L.A. Confidential" (Curtis Hanson) and "Chronicles of Narnia" (Michael Apted) and starring King Leonidas sounded goofy, then check out these clips from "Chasing Mavericks" because the movie itself actually looks really well done.
Based on the true-life surf legend Jay Moriarty (Jonny Weston) and his gruff mentor Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler), the movie chronicles their friendship and their quest to find the perfect wave, which also happens to be America's most dangerous one as well.
1. Gerard Butler is the surfing equivalent of Mr. Miyagi. Sex wax on, sex wax off...
2. "All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz and I'm fine."
3. His name shouldn't be "Gerard Butler" — more like Gerard Handyman.
4. Playin' it cool in the pool.
5. Apparently Greco Roman wrestling is the same as surfing.

We're not exactly thrilled about the new Gerard Butler surfing movie Chasing Mavericks, in which he essentially plays Bodhi from Point Break but without the bank robbing. But we won't fully judge it until it comes out, and in the meantime at least one cool thing is resulting from this project. Mashable points us to a viral video for the movie featuring two surfers who jump on motorized surfboards and take to the streets of New York, heading from uptown to Battery Park with the same slow-mo vibes and chill music normally found in real surfing videos. Remember "moto surf" from Surf Ninjas? This is a way cooler version of that. ‘Chasing Mavericks’ Trailer Proves That Big Wave Riding Isn’t Just For Macho Jerks With a Death Wish
If you thought that the last scene in Kathryn Bigelow’s legendary bank-robbing-surfers movie Point Break was the coolest presentation of big wave riding that was ever going to be put on film…well, you were probably right. But just because it was the best word doesn’t mean it has to be the last word. So now we’ve got Chasing Mavericks, a Gerard Butler- and Jonny Weston-starring film that tells the true story of how surfing legend Jay Moriarty learned to ride a board on top of ridiculously big walls of water. Like most true stories about an underdog chasing an impossible dream, Chasing Mavericks looks pretty cheesy. All of the standard tropes are there: the tenuous relationship with an initially gruff mentor, the training montage sequences, the budding romance with an energetic blonde. But, before you dismiss this movie outright and go watch The Karate Kid for the thousandth time, note...

The star plays real-life guru Frosty Hesson and looks good doing it, as you’ll see in the trailer below.Chasing Mavericks tells the based-on-truth story of surf champion Jay Moriarty’s early days. Here played by Jonny Weston, he’s an enthusiastic pupil, but still has a lot to learn. The waves are very real too: the Northern California break known as the Mavericks makes for some lethal waters that can easily swallow inexperienced and unwary riders. Think Point Break without the FBI and the bit where Keanu shoots his gun in the air and goes "Aaaah".As directed by Curtis Hanson, the movie shows us how Frosty agrees to school Moriarty...

So are uplifting yet tragic surfing movies a thing now? Last year we got "Soul Surfer," the true story of a young woman who gets attacked by a shark while out on the water, loses an arm, finds God, and gets back on the board. And now, we're getting another wholesome slice of sadness in the form of "Chasing Mavericks," a movie that will make you feel good before dropping some heaviness on y'all. The film stars Gerard Butler, Jonny Weston, Leven Rambin, Elisabeth Shue and Abigail Spencer in the biopic of late surfer Jay Moriarty. The Santa Cruz native found his calling in the world of surfing at a young age and soon flourished with the guidance of local elder Rick “Frosty” Hesson (Butler). Moriarty (Weston) trained under a vigorous mental and physical program in preparation to surf Mavericks, a spot on the California coast where waves five stories...

I love the sport of surfing, and as a fan and surfer myself I've been looking forward to seeing how Gerard Butler's new surfing movie Chasing Mavericks turned out.
The film tell the true life story of Jay Moriarty, played by Jonny Weston. He was trained to ride the big waves of Northern California's Mavericks by Rick "Frosty" Hesson which is who Butler plays. The swells at Mavericks can get of five stories high! It's quite a sight to see, and the fact that surfers paddle into these bad boys is insane!
The movie also stars Elisabeth Shue, Leven Rambin, and Abigail Spencer, and it hits theaters on October 26th. It actually looks pretty good for a surfing movie! Check out the trailer below and let us know if it's a film that sparks your interest! Would you ever try to ride a wave that big?

Chasing Mavericks is the first feature film from Oscar winner Curtis Hanson since, uh, 2007's Lucky You, and if the dialogue feels a bit more banal and generically inspirational than anything Hanson gave us in L.A. Confidential or Wonder Boys or even 8 Mile, at least there's a whole lot of gorgeous surf photography. Gerard Butler plays a reclusive older surfer who takes real-life surf icon Jay Moriarty (played here by relative newcomer Jonny Weston) under his wing to train him for the gigantic NorCal waves known as Mavericks. Supportive wives and mothers Abigail Spencer and Elisabeth Shue lend a maternal touch/do laundry.

"Have you ever felt like you were meant for something more? Something bigger than you?"
That's what aspiring surfer Jay Moriarty (Jonny Weston) intones at the beginning of the new trailer, courtesy of MTV, for "Chasing Mavericks," and as you'll see in the footage they really deliver on the whole "bigger" thing.
Specifically, some super gnarly, mythologically huge waves on the Pacific Ocean that real-life surf god Moriarty conquered with the help of veteran surfer dude Frosty Hesson, played with wild-eyed charm by Gerard Butler. While Moriarty tragically died in a diving accident in 2001, Butler nearly did himself in while shooting the film in December, luckily escaping with his life, abs and Spartan shield intact.
Originally titled "Of Men and Mavericks," "Chasing Mavericks" was directed by the eclectic and often brilliant filmmaker Curtis Hanson ("L.A. Confidential," "Wonder Boys"), who has already tackled choppy water in "The River Wild" and biopics with Eminem's "8 Mile.

If Soul Surfer was just a little too on-the-nose and cloying, L.A. Confidential and Wonder Boys director Curtis Hanson is delivering a more serious surfing drama this year with Chasing Mavericks. Previously going under Of Men and Mavericks (and just Mavericks), the film is a biopic of the late surfing icon Jay Moriarty, who made news conquering a massive wave at age 16 (which is the story this film takes on), before dying at the age of 22 in a diving accident.
Jonny Weston plays the character, but the biggest name here is Gerard Butler, fitting in as the role of mentor. Although I’m not particularly invested in the content at hand, Hanson has been known to craft a solid drama with strong characters and while the trailer seems a bit generic, I have faith he can pull it off again with the subject matter here. Check out the trailer...

It's taken a while, but Gerard Butler is finally going to answer his calling as an action star. The genre-hopping tough guy found success with a couple of romantic comedies, but his Oscar bid for "Machine Gun Preacher" fell short, so he's redoubling his efforts to become an A-List head-smasher. Butler's attached to Naval thriller "Hunter Killer," war picture "Thunder Run" and a heist film, "Brilliant," and now he's going to follow in the footsteps of fellow tough guys Clint Eastwood, Michael Douglas and Wesley Snipes. You guessed it: he's going to steal the Declaration of Independence save the President Of The United States, in the jargon-y sounding "Olympus Has Fallen."
Butler will play an ex-Secret Service agent in the actioner, in charge of stopping a terrorist attack on the White House. No other details have been released, but since he's an ex-agent, we do hope he's a rogue and a renegade.

Gerard Butler is currently seeking treatment at the Betty Ford Center.
According to TMZ, the actor is in rehab for a number of substance-abuse problems including prescription drugs and cocaine, but the focus of his problems are in "pain management."
The site reports that his problems stem back to 2006, when he was shooting "300" and the physical demand took a toll on him. The problem was reportedly aggravated on December 18, when he hurt himself on the set of "Of Men and Mavericks" while surfing.
He reportedly entered the rehab facility three weeks ago after he realized he had been using prescription drugs too much and didn't want it to become a full-on addiction. The site reports he is expected to leave sometime Friday (February 24).

No matter how tough someone might be, when Mother Nature decides to have her way with them, they've no choice but to roll with it and wait until it's over. Gerard Butler learned that first-hand once while surfing. He had an experience so traumatic he felt he was reliving it while telling the story on "The Graham Norton Show" (Sat., 10 p.m. Est on BBC America).
"I'm with three of the best surfers in the world, and they're just going, 'Paddle, Gerry! Paddle!'" Butler said of the moment before the first wave took him. They came out of nowhere and were topping out at nearly 30 feet high. Anyone who's been in the ocean can attest to the random huge waves that seem to come from nowhere, and vanish just as quickly.
Before he could regain himself and find the surface, another wave took him and kept him tumbling underwater.

It’s been nearly five years since Wonder Boys and L.A. Confidential director Curtis Hanson released a feature, so fans of his work are presumably pretty primed and ready for his next movie Of Men and Mavericks to complete filming. On that front, fans of Hanson are in for some really bad news, which will then be tempered by a little bit of good news to ease the pain. The really bad news is that Hanson is experiencing some complications from his recent heart surgery and won’t be able to complete principal photography on the film, which is a biopic of big wave surfer Jay Moriarty. The better news is that Hanson already has most of the shooting done, in fact there is only two weeks left of scheduled filming to get in the can, so veteran director Michael Apted (Gorillas in the Mist, The World is Not Enough) is going to step in and...
