Like OBEs, middlebrow British prestige biopics symbolize a desire to raise national morale by bestowing laurels upon an extraordinary individual. These subjects require no special case-making, for their efforts speak for themselves. The result tends to be patronizingly risk-averse, as story dots are joined with the goal of spoon-feeding a historic achievement to the masses. An inspirational message becomes a claim to contemporary relevance while a popular actor leads the charge towards awards recognition.
What sets Anthony Hopkins as Sir Nicholas Winton aside from Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing in “The Imitation Game” and Eddie Redmayne as Steven Hawking in “The Theory of Everything,” is that while these two men are known for their scientific inventions, Winton acted from an instinctive desire to do something humane.

“A Very British Scandal” production designer Christina Moore spent time driving around the Scottish Highlands as she sought locations for the Amazon Prime limited series. Set in 1963, the historical drama charts the tumultuous marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll, played by Claire Foy and Paul Bettany.
The Duke, who had inherited Scotland’s crumbling Inveraray Castle, married a series of women hoping to use their money to maintain the castle. His third marriage was to society figure and serial adulteress Margaret Whigham. As rumors of adultery, violence and alcoholism come into play, their divorce becomes a subject of hot gossip.
Moore found numerous locations around Scotland and London to help steep audiences in the history of the story.

As Moore traveled around Scotland, she thought it was unlikely that the filming crew would have access to the actual Duke’s Inveraray Castle, on the Western coast. But...

Jessica Swale’s World War II-era “Summerland,” debuting on demand via IFC on July 31, turns the English coastal countryside into a character in the tale of a reclusive writer played by Gemma Arterton — and the house in which much of the action takes place serves as a portal to those surroundings.
Making her feature film debut, Swale, the Olivier-winning playwright who penned “Nell Gwynn,” enlisted set decorator Philippa Hart to create the ambience of the house. It’s there that Arterton’s Alice is writing a thesis about the mythology of the area, when a boy — an evacuee from London — is left in her care. Overcoming her initial misgivings, she establishes a friendship with the child that reawakens her emotionally and allows her to reconnect with the memories of a former love (Gugu Mbatha-Raw).
The house that’s featured in the movie is film-friendly — its exteriors were used in the final scenes of 2007’s “Atonement.

It has been seventy-five years since World War II ended and there appears to be no shortage of new tales to tell. Enter Summerland, written and directed by Jessica Swale. The film concerns Alice (Gemma Arterton), a hermetic writer living in Southern England. She’s hated by the entire community, and hates them right back. The legend Tom Courtenay offers up some pitch-perfect facial expressions as the principal of the local school.
As the war tears apart London, a group of children arrive in the seaside town to be temporarily adopted for their safety. Alice is perturbed to find she has apparently volunteered to take care of one: a boy named Frank, played by Lucas Bond. Before long, of course, the pair grow comfortable with one another.
Arterton has been an under-appreciated performer for much of her career. Too often do her stellar turns come in under-seen fare, such as Tamara Drewe and Byzantium.

Updated, 11 Am: Former Jessie star Debby Ryan has posted a video tribute in memory of co-star Cameron Boyce, her first response since Boyce’s death Sunday at the age of 20. She re-posted a video of a speech Boyce gave at the Thirst Project’s 9th Annual Thirst Gala in 2018. “It’s crazy. We can tweet whatever we want and we can use social media and Instagram and make the world a better place instead of a worse one, which so many people use it for,” Boyce said in the video-taped speech. “But we need to use our resources and what we have… we’re all in here wearing suits. We need to use what we have to make the world a better place for other people… other people, people who need us!” Boyce was honored with The Pioneering Spirit Award at the Gala. Ryan has not released any further statements on Boyce’s death.

"These men may spend the night in jail, there may be guards all over the place, but when they're with these horses they're free." One Media has debuted a trailer for a film titled Running Wild, a drama about a woman trying to save her ranch by working with convicts to rehabilitate a herd of wild horses that came on to her property. This stars Dorian Brown as Stella Davis, the rancher woman who learns that "there is no better remedy to misfortune than helping another living creature." Indeed. Sharon Stone also stars, along with Tommy Flanagan, Christina Moore, Jason Lewis, Tom Williamson, John Ducey, & Michael Wiseman. This looks like a straight-to-tv Hallmark movie, but somehow it's sneaking into some theaters. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Alex Ranarivelo's Running Wild, direct from YouTube: Running Wild is about Stella Davis, a widow who saves her ranch by working...

Jeremy Shada has never seen “Rushmore” or “Election” (granted — he’s been busy as a working actor for the majority of his 19 years), but he plays politico teenager Tyler Prendergast with a magical combination of Max Fischer’s charisma and Tracy Flick’s moxie.
Tyler Prendergast is the anchor at the heart of “Mr. Student Body President,” a snappy and smart comedy that takes its teenage characters as seriously as they take student government. Tyler runs a tight ship at Berenger High, buoyed by his right-hand woman Hadley (Arden Rose), always to the dismay of his formidable principal (Christina Moore). Whether it’s a hall monitor strike, a problem with the peace treaty between the nerds and the jocks, or a power play from an upstart freshman, there is no problem Tyler and his team cannot handle.
