For the past three years, the American Cinematheque has presented “Bleak Week,” an annual festival devoted to the greatest films ever made about the darkest side of humanity. This year, the festival will not only be unspooling in Los Angeles June 1 – 7 — with special guests including Al Pacino, Lynne Ramsay, Charlie Kaufman, and Karyn Kusama — but will travel to New York for the first time with a week of screenings at the historic Paris Theater starting June 9.
“We are honored to co-present ‘Bleak Week: New York’ in partnership with one of the most beautiful movie palaces in the world,” Cinematheque artistic director Grant Moninger told IndieWire. “This year, over 10,000 people will attend ‘Bleak Week: Year 3’ in Los Angeles, proving that audiences are hungry for such powerful and confrontational cinema. Many people thought they were alone in their desire to explore films with uncomfortable truths, but the truth is that they are part of a large community,...

As the Cannes Film Festival celebrates its parties and standing ovations, audiences in Hollywood and New York prepare to wallow in despair. And they’ll enjoy it (almost).
The festival called Bleak Week this week will deliver 43 films to an expected audience of 10,000 at theaters including the restored Egyptian in Hollywood, the Aero in Santa Monica and the Paris in New York.
Created by the American Cinematheque, Bleak Week will feature celebrities and Q&a sessions explaining why their projects deal with existential dread, nihilism and “uncomfortable truths,” as Bleak Week creative director Grant Moninger puts it.
Not surprisingly, there surely also will be post-screening alcoholic consumption for filmgoers seeking to ease the pain.
As the Cinematheque details it, Bleak Week was not prompted by Gaza, student protests, geomagnetic storms or the possible loss of yet another studio (Paramount).
Rather, its announced purpose is to honor an important if long-ignored...

Cristiano Ronaldo has the most followers on Instagram. Elon Musk claims that title on his platform X (naturally). And Letterboxd has Martin Scorsese.
When he joined in October, shortly after his film “Killers of the Flower Moon” hit theaters, the director quickly became the most-followed account on the burgeoning social media platform, which allows users to rate and review movies, create lists and follow their friends. The director — or whichever canny member of his team is behind the account — doesn’t use the platform as a viewing diary though. Scorsese’s inaugural post was a list of 59 titles cited as companion texts to his own work. In the weeks since, he’s shared a second list of his favorite wide-screen movies.
Scorsese will draw a crowd, but it’s still a bit of an anomaly for an octogenarian to become the most popular account on a social media platform — especially...

Clear your calendar, L.A. cinephiles! The American Cinematheque has announced the titles for its extraordinary 70mm festival taking place at the iconic Egyptian Theatre in the days after the movie palace reopens following a three-year restoration. Netflix, in partnership with the American Cinematheque, bought the cinema in 2020.
The 516-seat theater, which was the longtime home of the American Cinematheque before the refurbishment, will retain its full ability to project 70mm prints and also be one of only five cinemas in the U.S. capable of projecting nitrate film. That early form of celluloid prints is notable for its astounding sharpness and vivid colors — you’ve never seen Technicolor until you’ve seen it in nitrate — but it’s extremely flammable, which you know if you’ve seen “Inglourious Basterds,” and thus harder to handle for many projectionists today.

The idea of a U.S. film festival sticking to its dates in 2020 with a fully programmed, all-physical, non-virtual slate of screenings? It might seem beyond possibility, but then, the suspension of disbelief is particularly accentuated at L.A.’s annual Beyond Fest, which programs “genre” films every fall at the American Cinematheque’s Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. With all indoor theaters in the county currently mothballed, the celebration of horror and fantasy moved to the most fantastical of SoCal places — Montclair — for a week of double-features at the Mission Tiki Drive-In, wrapping up with Thursday night’s riotously received world premiere of Blumhouse’s “Freaky.”
“If you had told us a year ago we were going to premiere at a drive-in, it might not have felt like an awesome thing,” said Adam Egypt Mortimer, the director of “Archenemy,” standing beneath the big screen and stars before the world bow of his film Wednesday night.

Dedicated to delivering the elite in horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and badass cinema, this year’s Beyond Fest programming reflects a globally diverse and eclectic mix of premieres, rare repertory screenings, and special events, all of which are anchored in bringing firsts to the community of genre fans in Los Angeles.
Beyond Fest has also partnered with Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network as its presenting sponsor, a partnership that will make much of the festival’s programming free to creative makers and film fans alike.
“The response was so great last year that we knew we had to bring Beyond Fest back, so much so that we immediately started planning this installment,” said Christian Parkes, co-founder of Beyond Fest.

On Saturday evening, the American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood continued its tradition, (along with its sister theatre, the Aero in Santa Monica), of the best year-round film programming on this coast or any other, as actor-filmmaker Ed Harris appeared live for a Q&A session after a screening of Knightriders, the 1981 film directed by George A. Romero. The film is a true original, a (sort of) retelling of the legend of Camelot through the members of a traveling road show who dress up as medieval knights and have jousting tournaments while riding motorcycles. Harris, in one of his first lead film roles (perhaps the first?), plays a character named Chris, who is the titular king of the group of Knightriders, and takes this position very, very seriously. Too seriously for an off-shoot of the troupe who just want...
