- Paul Monette met Winston Wilde in 1990. They shared a life until Monette's death in 1995.
- Published six novels, three collections of poems, and several memoirs. His book Borrowed Time: An AIDS Memoir won a Lambada Literary Award.
- Shared a life with Roger Horwitz from 1974 until Horwitz's death from AIDS in 1986. Before his own death in 1995 (also from AIDS), Monette established the Monette-Horwitz Trust to honor individuals and organizations for their significant contributions toward eradicating homophobia.
- Won the National Book Award for nonfiction in 1992 for his work Becoming a Man: Half a Life Story.
- Wrote groundbreaking nonfiction about the experience of being a gay widower.
