- Best known as Frank DiGiorgio (Dirty Harry's partner) in the first three "Dirty Harry" films (Dirty Harry (1971), Magnum Force (1973) and The Enforcer (1976)) and as Pvt. Hoffenmueller, the trooper who only spoke German, in the western comedy series F Troop (1965).
- There was a movement to have his "America, Why I Love Her" declared the National Poem for the US.

- Children: daughters with wife Joy Hallward: Victoria Ann Mitchum (B. December 18, 1941 in Los Angeles) and Christine Estelle Mitchum (B. January 9, 1944 in Los Angeles) and with wife Nancy Jean Munro: Cynthia "Cindy" Diane Mitchum (B. May 8, 1958 in Los Angeles). Son John "Jack" Mitchum II (died March 5, 2001 of a bleeding ulcer at age 46).
