“The Sopranos” is turning 25 by way of a 21st century social media phenom: TikTok.
The iconic HBO series celebrates its 25th anniversary with the “Sopranos in :25” campaign on TikTok, with recaps of every episode launching in 25-second snippets.
To further honor the series, streaming platform Max released never-before-seen deleted footage and five hours of behind-the-scenes content. Free episodes of the series will also be available through on-demand cable platforms with select providers, and the first two episodes of the show are streaming for free on Max’s YouTube page. The official “The Sopranos” anniversary date is January 10.
“‘The Sopranos’ left an indelible imprint on the global entertainment culture and was instrumental in defining HBO as the destination for groundbreaking, award-winning programming,” Zach Enterlin, executive VP of brand, content and creative of streaming marketing for HBO and Max said in a press statement. “The many ways we will honor this...

Paramount is really trying to make “Fetch” happen, this time with a younger generation.
On October 3, forever enshrined as “Mean Girls” Day in memory of the first time hottie Aaron Samuels asked Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) what day it was in the 2004 teen comedy, Paramount put the entirety of “Mean Girls” on TikTok, viewable for free in 23 chunks.
It’s the first time a movie, new or classic, has been released in full by a major movie studio on TikTok, though Peacock earlier this year released the full pilot episode of the Craig Robinson series “Killing It” as an appetizer to bring in audiences to the streaming show. Other distributors have experimented with such models on other platforms, like the Fortnite premiere of “Tenet” or when Oscilloscope posted a movie in 6-second segments on Vine.

A summer full of hope for theaters is giving way to a fall filled with uncertainty. Anxious studios, paralyzed by striking actors and writers demanding better labor contracts, are pushing several films like “Dune: Part Two” and “Kraven the Hunter” to 2024, and there’s a good chance that more release delays will come if the strike continues.
How ironic then, that cinemas might get a bailout not from a studio, but from the Antihero.
Last week, Taylor Swift set the film industry on its ear when AMC Entertainment announced that it would directly distribute a concert film recorded during the pop star’s wildly successful Eras Tour with a full theatrical window starting Oct. 13. After just one day, AMC reported a stunning $26 million from presales. Now, exhibition sources told TheWrap, Swift’s concert film is likely to become the first October release to top $100 million on its opening weekend.

“Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour” is already on track to be among the biggest theatrical titles for the rest of 2023 — and that’s already ruffling some Hollywood feathers.
With box office analysts already projecting a possible $100 million-plus opening, the filmed concert documentary is exactly what theaters ordered to maintain momentum following a “Barbenheimer”-fueled summer movie season. The big surprise is that the film, produced with a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement, will be released directly via AMC and participating theaters, with no studio involvement.
“It’s scary that Taylor Swift can come in and become a hit without using conventional marketing routes,” Bruce Nash, founder and publisher of box-office data site The Numbers, told TheWrap.
Adding to the unsettling feeling is the fact that legacy studios made a play for the concert film, only to get rebuffed, which might explain the sour grapes.

After an unexpectedly robust summer at the international box office, there is a near-term question mark about what will happen next: Will recovery stall due to a paucity of Hollywood tentpole movies? Or will international theatrical decouple and find new drivers to maintain the momentum?
The good news is that most of the international market’s top territories are now fully open and operating without significant restrictions on seating capacity. These include the U.K. and Ireland, Japan, France, Germany, Spain, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Brazil. The smaller number of territories still laboring under restrictions nevertheless include some valuable ones: China, Turkey, Argentina, Hong Kong and Russia.
Hollywood movies that have driven the recent international recovery include “Jurassic World Dominion” (611 million internationally); “Minions: The Rise of Gru” (486 million); “Thor: Love and Thunder” (405 million); and “Elvis” (126 million).

Who were the top draws at the international box office in 2015 in terms of overall film grosses? Hint: a lot of them came from a single franchise. But there are some surprises in the mix. The data for the Top 20 was provided to Deadline by Box Office Analyst's Robert Mitchell. Departing from previous years, we’ve expanded from 10 to 20 since the Top 10 are heavily skewed by one or two films, and it’s elucidating to play the field wider. Contrary to last year, there is…...

Killing Them Safely, Nick Berardini’s incisive documentary about the lethality of tasers in the hands of police officers, is exploring just about the most prescient subject of 2015: police brutality. But Berardini’s film doesn’t take the conventional issue-doc routes of either a specific case and examining the damage, or even just confronting the subject matter head-on. Rather, Killing Them Safely starts backward, centering the entire story around Taser International, the Arizona-based company who has made a fortune suppling police departments across the country with tasers. They’re an utterly strange company whose choices (and non-choices) illustrate lofty concepts about corporate trust, moralistic delusion, and that’s even before the film dives into the intertwined adjacent conversation about the ethical and political implications of non-lethal weapons like tasers.
These are all strong accomplishments, but Berardini’s film would be cold to the touch if it didn’t transcend...

Todd Haynes is in the running for best director and both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are in contention for best female lead alongside Room’s Brie Larson as Carol earned six 2016 Film Independent Spirit Award nominations in Los Angeles on Tuesday.Scroll down for full list of nominations
Close behind were Spotlight and Beasts Of No Nation on five apiece, followed by indie darling Tangerine and Anomalisa on four each.
Not even a glitch that saw the list of nominees temporarily appear on the Film Independent website prior to the official announcement could spoil what turned out by and large to be a recognition of independent film in its myriad forms.
Besides the more predictable contenders like Carol, Spotlight and Room, there was plenty of love for Tangerine, shot on an iPhone, and Beasts Of No Nation from Netflix, whose day-and-date release (and what that portends) infuriated large swathes of the exhibition sector but has clearly...

It Follows has become the most talked about horror film of the season thanks to rave reviews and a ridiculous amount of press from not only genre outlets but mainstream ones as well. With so much hype surrounding it, I deemed it necessary to drop everything and see it as soon as possible. As I left the theater, I couldn’t shake the feeling that while what I saw was both engaging and thought-provoking it still somehow missed the mark of true terror.
In It Follows, a teenager (Maika Monroe) has disturbing visions following a strange sexual encounter. She has the inescapable feeling that someone -- or something -- is after her.
I couldn’t help but be intrigued with the premise of what has now become a juggernaut of a horror film. As a Christian who promotes sexual abstinence before marriage, the concept of “It Follows” caught my attention right away.

Midweek releases help movies steal a march on the competition
A decade ago, release date etiquette was easy. Films opened on a Friday, with only the occasional movie sneaking out a day early. Most tickets were sold at the weekend, and this was the period that always featured in box-office reports. In an age of appointment TV, tempting audiences into cinemas midweek was a challenge.
Today, it's a different story. Friday is still the presumed release date for films, but exceptions are now so common they can barely be termed exceptional. This summer alone, we have seen films large (Avengers Assemble), small (Leave it on the Floor) and all points in between pursue a midweek strategy. Some releases worked (The Amazing Spider-Man boosted its opening tally with £4.3m of previews), others did not (What to Expect when You're Expecting added just £69,000), and the trend is showing no sign of abating.

Ken Loach is honoured by the French, and real male strippers liven up the Magic Mike after-party
Loach lands the Lumière
Ken Loach celebrated the news that he was to receive the prestigious Lumière award in Lyon by taking a swipe at the British government's attitude to film. "I'm surprised and thrilled to become part of a very distinguished club," he told me, as he joined previous honorees Clint Eastwood, Milos Forman and Gérard Depardieu as only the fourth recipient of the Lumière.
"I've always enjoyed such a good relationship with French audiences. If it wasn't for the French, I don't know where I'd be. I probably wouldn't be making films at all. I'd have probably stuck to documentaries and hoped to work for television.
"The reason I've been welcomed in France is because they have a government which supports their cinema. Successive British governments have had an impoverished view of cinema.

Many people may off-handedly say they want to kill their mother, but the two sisters who were the subject of Toronto Star reporter Bob Mitchell’s book “The Class Project: How to Kill a Mother: The True Story of Canada’s Infamous Bathtub Girls,” well, they were pretty serious about it. The book tells the story of a pair of girls whose lives had been torturous for as long as they could remember due to the various abuses committed against them by their alcoholic mom and her string of sleazy boyfriends, so they hatched a scheme to rub mommy out and collect the insurance money. First time director Stanley M. Brooks has already got Abigail Breslin (Zombieland) and Georgie Henley (The Chronicles of Narnia) signed on to play the sisters in a film adaptation, and now Variety is reporting that Oscar winning actress Mira Sorvino has just joined the cast in the role of the abusive...

Since her Oscar-nominated turn in Little Miss Sunshine, the talented Abigail Breslin has been working, for the most part, with lighter fare — No Reservations; Definitely, Maybe; Rango; and even Zombieland, which has a consistently comedic air to it. Her upcoming commitments, however, point toward a change in the atmosphere.
She’s already signed on to Hilary Brougher‘s Innocence, a drama-thriller that involves vampires nesting in a private school. It’s her latest project, though, that is the real eye-opener. It’s titled The Class Project, and Breslin will star as one of “two Canadian sisters who, tired of their mother’s alcoholism and abusive boyfriends, plot to kill her.” [Variety]

Abigail Breslin, Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee for the sleeper hit Little Miss Sunshine, is all grown up now. Or at least grown up enough to commit matricide. Breslin is set to star in Stan Brooks' real-life-based indie drama The Class Project, the story of two teenage Canadian sisters who, fed up with their alcoholic mother, decide to do away with her — reportedly with the assistance of the 15-year-old boyfriend of one of them — by first pumping her up with vodka, Tylenol 3, and codeine, and then drowning her in the bathtub. Hence the girls' tabloid moniker: "Bathtub Girls." Leave it up to the media to come up and spread around the most idiotic nicknames. Production on The Class Project is slated to begin next month, reports Variety. The screenplay is by Fabrizio Filippo and Adam Till, who adapted Toronto Star reporter Bob Mitchell’s 2008 book The Class Project: How...

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been waiting a long (long, long, loooong) time to see Little Miss Sunshine herself, that charming tot Abigail Breslin, sign on for some murder action. Just me? Breslin has joined the cast of The Class Project, which tells the story of two sisters who plot to kill their own mother after years of dealing with both her alcoholism and her abusive boyfriends. Breslin will play one of the sisters in the film. And while that plotline alone sounds titillating to all get-out, it only gets better. It’s based on the true story of two Canadian sisters who got away with the crime for nearly a year. The girls were just 15 and 13 years old at the time. Toronto Star reporter Bob Mitchell wrote a book in 2008 on the crime, which was committed back in 2003. The book has the much longer (and snazzier!) title...

Currently in that star child actress moving onto more adult roles phase of her career, Abigail Breslin is moving closer to the direction of acting peers such as the Fannings by taking on some tougher, less flattering indie drama roles. After signing up for Hilary Brougher's Innocence, the actress will now topline The Class Project, playing one of two teen sisters turned murders. To be directed by Stan Brooks (we've got no clue who this director is), lensing begins this month. Producers include Michael Rotenberg, Damian Ganczewski and Juliette Hagopian.
