Oppenheimer took home the most golden statues — including director Christopher Nolan’s very first Academy Award — at the 2024 Oscars, which was hosted once again by Jimmy Kimmel.
Christopher Nolan’s J. Robert Oppenheimer biopic led the pack with 13 nominations and ultimately won best picture, best director, best actor (Cillian Murphy), best supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), best cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema) and best original score (Ludwig Göransson). It was followed by Poor Things, which won four awards (including best actress for Emma Stone) and was nominated for 11. Killers of the Flower Moon earned 10 noms but left the show empty-handed, while Barbie was nominated for eight Oscars and won best original song for “I’m Just Ken.”
The 96th Oscars were held on Sunday, March 10 at Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. Those who missed the live telecast can stream the ceremony on demand on Hulu.

Updated with Emma Stone win: Poor Things wrapped up its night at the Oscars with a lead actress win for Emma Stone, along with earlier nods for Production Design, Makeup & Hairstyling and Costume Design. See the acceptance speeches above and below.
A clearly emotional Stone thanked director Yorgos Lanthimos for the “gift of a lifetime” for her role as Bella Baxter. This was Stone’s second Oscar win out of four nominations. She also served as a producer on the film.
In her acceptance speech, Stone said “It’s not about me. It’s about a team that came together to make something greater than the sum of its parts and that is the best part about making movies.”

John Cena may have not run across the 2024 Oscars stage nude Sunday, but he certainly did awkwardly walk to present the award for best costume design.
Jimmy Kimmel initially kicked off the bit by asking, “Can you imagine if a nude man ran across the stage today? Wouldn’t that be crazy?” The host was referencing when Robert Opel infamously streaked during the 46th Academy Awards in 1974.
Cena proceeded to pop his head out from backstage to inform Kimmel, “I changed my mind. I don’t want to do the streaker bit anymore. … You should feel ashamed right now for suggesting such a tasteless idea.”
“It’s supposed to be funny,” Kimmel responded before Cena quipped, “The male body is not a joke.” But the host added, “Mine is.”
As Kimmel continued to push Cena to streak across the stage, he reminded the WWE star, “You wrestle naked. Why not?...

Despite two historic strikes, shifting release schedules, and the ongoing risk of coronavirus, Hollywood had a lot to celebrate at tonight’s 96th Academy Awards. If there was a message to take away from this year’s awards season, it’s that 2023 was a very good year for movies.

My, how much the race has evolved since the 96th Oscars nominations were announced January 23. We won’t say changed, since it seems like the certain sure bets at that time have become even surer bets. You all know “Oppenheimer,” long considered a frontrunner in many categories,” received the most nominations then with 13, followed by “Poor Things” with 11 and “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10. Well, tonight, this evening of Sunday March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles at 7:00pm Et, we’re finally gonna see if what we all assume to be true is actually going to pan out: That “Oppenheimer” is teed up for a very big night, as IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has predicted, with her final Oscar picks, herself.
“Oppenheimer” has won top honors at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Surely Oscars domination is next, right?...

The biopic “Oppenheimer” was meant to take the award season by storm ever since its release. With a powerhouse cast and a director known for meticulous attention to detail, the film seemed destined for critical acclaim.
A still from Oppenheimer (2023)
However, a recent observation by industry expert Amy Nicholson has thrown a wrench into “Oppenheimer’s” awards trajectory. Known for catching historical goofs and picking movies apart, she spotted a small detail that feels illegal for a Christopher Nolan movie. This could either just be a harmless oversight or maybe a potentially award-sinking misstep.

The films in contention for the 2024 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our current odds posit “Barbie” (10/3) as the frontrunner, followed in order by “Poor Things” (7/2), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), and “Napoleon” (9/2).
Since she was previously feted for “Anna Karenina” (2013) and “Little Women” (2020), Jacqueline Durran’s ninth career nomination for “Barbie” could make her the dozenth costumer with three or more wins. As is the case this time, her 2020 bid resulted from a collaboration with director Greta Gerwig, while her 2013 one was her third of five for a Joe Wright film, after “Pride & Prejudice” (2006) and “Atonement” (2008) and before “Darkest Hour” (2018) and “Cyrano” (2022). Her remaining two bids came for “Mr. Turner” (2015) and “Beauty and the Beast” (2018).

Oscar-nominated artisans landed historical firsts in numerous categories in this year’s race. After decades in the industry, costume designer Ellen Mirojnick earned her first nod for “Oppenheimer.” Scott George became the first Osage Nation songwriter to be nominated for his song in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” while Diane Warren scored a record 15th nod. John Williams bested his record-breaking achievement when he was recognized for original score.
When they’re not making history, what makes these artisans special is their storytelling through their craft. Building worlds and environments with rich, lush textures to immerse audiences into their scapes.
Here, Variety takes a look at the nominated artisans across all the crafts ahead of the guild awards and Oscars on March 10.

“Peoor Things” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Costume Design with a win for period pictures at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 21. It prevailed over three of its Oscar rivals, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon” and “Oppenheimer” plus “Maestro.”
The fifth Oscar nominee, “Barbie,” won the fantasy/sci-fi race. The other CDG winner was the contemporary film “Saltburn”
In its 25-year history, the CDG has previewed only 12 of the Oscar winners for Best Costume Design: nine of these have been period pictures and three have been sci-fi or fantasy flicks. Of the last six Costume Designers Guild Awards winners three have gone on to repeat at the Academy Awards: “Cruella” in 2022, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in 2021 and “Black Panther” in 2019.
Last year, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” pulled off an upset in the fantasy/sci-fi race over eventual Oscar champ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Some categories go together naturally, like Best Picture and Best Director. It’s no different in the below-the-line categories, either, with Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling having an interesting relationship with one another.
The three design awards are often paired or grouped together as a trio and awarded to the same film. Most recently, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” won both Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Let’s take a closer look at this trifecta of categories and examine the last 20 ceremonies to break down how often these awards overlap.
As you can see, in the past two decades, there have been 11 instances where a film has won at least two of these three design categories.
Eight films have won both Costume Design and Production Design: “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004, “The Aviator” in 2005, “Memoirs of a Geisha...

Best Costume Design is always a popular category at the Oscars since, unlike some other below-the-line categories, it’s more apparent to moviegoers at large which costumes are worthy of note and thus worthy of winning. This year’s category includes three previous Oscar winners and three first-time nominees, and though period pieces tend to do very well in this category, it’s two of the more unique films that mix contemporary, period and genre elements likely to get the most attention.
It might not be a coincidence that all five of this year’s nominations line-up with this year’s Best Production Design nominees. The two categories go hand-in-hand when it comes to crafting glorious-looking films.

Following Oppenheimer‘s leading 13 Oscar nominations on Tuesday, writer and director Christopher Nolan is still “somewhat amused” by the film’s level of success, given it’s an R-rated, three-hour black-and-white biopic about nuclear physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer.
“We’ve clearly caught a wave with the film and that’s something we’re very grateful for,” Nolan tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We never imagined this level of success. But we did have faith that it was a great story. You know, certainly audiences going to it in the summer, I think it was the strength of the story itself, this great piece of American history that was driving things for us. Also, for a film that came out in the summer to be recognized by the Academy at the end of the year or beginning of next year, it’s just a very rewarding thing to wake up to. Frankly,...

Oppenheimer was one of the surprising success stories of the summer box office, and now Christopher Nolan’s World War II-era biopic has landed 13 Oscar nominations, more than any other film this year.
Notably, it marks Nolan’s first time landing both directing and writing nominations for one of his films, and it is also Nolan’s most nominated film ever. (2008’s The Dark Knight, 2010’s Inception and 2017’s Dunkirk each received eight.)
Oppenheimer is nominated for best picture (for producers Nolan, Emma Thomas and Charles Roven), while Nolan is in contention for the adapted screenplay. (He adapted the script from the 2005 J. Robert Oppenheimer biography American Prometheus, by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.)

Production designer Ruth De Jong and costume designer Ellen Mirojnick have worked on projects helmed by incredible filmmakers. De Jong earned an Emmy nomination for David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return and worked as the production designer on Jordan Peele’s Us and Nope. Mirojnick, meanwhile, earned an Emmy for Behind the Candelabra — one of her six collaborations with Steven Soderbergh — and designed costumes for Steven Spielberg (Always), Richard Attenborough (Chaplin), Kathryn Bigelow (Strange Days), Oliver Stone (Wall Street) and Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Showgirls and Starship Troopers).
So the pair know a thing or two about what makes a great director. But it’s Oppenheimer writer-director Christopher Nolan whom De Jong and Mirojnick call the ultimate filmmaker.
“There is no other director like him, and I’ve worked with some of the best,” says Mirojnick. “His method of collaboration is very generous, and he shares a massive amount by comparison to anyone else.

Albert Einstein had his theory of relativity, and Breaking Baz has his theory of party lift-off.
Friday night at the Universal filmed entertainment soiree, the moment of fusion came when Snoop Dogg hit the room at the Sunset Tower and was immediately embraced by Oppenheimer stars Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh.
No wait. Surely, it was when Blunt took Robert Downey Jr. in her arms and a giddy little waltz ensued.
Maybe the right molecular vibe kicked in when Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan arrived with Emma Thomas, its producer, and they fell into a lively conversation with Cillian Murphy and Downey Jr.
Perhaps it was when Colman Domingo sauntered in, resplendent in red. He stars in Netflix movie Rustin and WB’s The Color Purple, neither of them linked to Universal. Didn’t matter a jot. The warmth of the welcome for him was palpable. “I’m happy to be here,...

Costume designers are stepping up their decades-long fight for pay equity and gender equity.
On Thursday, Hollywood costume designers launched Pay Equity Now, a movement designed to spotlight longstanding pay discrepancies. Emmy award-winner Ariyela Wald-Cohain (“Waitress”) explains, “Costume design has historically been viewed as ‘women’s work’ and due to the lack of understanding of our job, there has been a lack of respect for our craft.”
With IATSE Basic Agreement negotiations set to start in March, the guild is pushing forward with a call to action. Among the four-step plan, costume designers should ask their agents to demand the same pay as department heads such as production designers or directors of cinematography, and to share their salaries and terms of their contracts with costume designers who are working for the same studios.

Since January 2, the four motion picture guilds comprising makeup artists & hairstylists, costume designers, art directors, and sound mixers have announced their nominations for the year’s best work in their respective fields. While there has been plenty of variation in their choices, all four organizations have shown solidarity in recognizing three films: “Barbie,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer”. All of these rank among our top 10 Best Picture candidates, with “Oppenheimer” in first place, “Barbie” in third, and “Maestro” in sixth.
Six of the remaining nine guilds will be heard from over the next week, starting with both the actors and directors on Jan. 10. They will be followed in order by the cinematographers (Jan. 11), producers (Jan. 12), sound editors (Jan. 15), and visual effects artists (Jan. 16), all of whom will reveal their awards finalists during the Oscar nominations voting period.

Three of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the 2024 Oscars reaped bids on January 4 for the Costume Designers Guild Awards.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things”contend here in the period picture category against “Maestro,” “Napoleon” and “Oppenheimer.”
The Oscar frontrunner, “Barbie” vies here in the sci-fi/fantasy race against “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire.”
‘The contemporary costume contenders are “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield” and “Saltburn.”
Our two other predicted Oscar nominees — “The Color Purple” and “Wonka” — can take heart that the guild often overlook films that go on to contend at the Academy Awards. Indeed the 2020 Oscar winner for Best Costume Design, “Little Women,” was snubbed by the CDG as were two of the other nominees, “The Irishman” and “Joker.” The guild honored...

The Costume Designers Guild has announced nominations for the 26th Costume Designers Guild Awards, with “Maestro,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things” and “Oppenheimer” among those landing nominations.
The costume designers behind “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon” will vie for the top prize in excellence in period film, while the artisans behind “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield” and “Saltburn” will compete for excellence in contemporary costume.
Notably missing from the lineup were the costume designers behind “The Color Purple,” “Wonka” and “Ferrari.”
Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has been an Oscars frontrunner for costume with Jacqueline Durran’s designs translating from the big screen into mainstream when the film became a cultural phenomenon last summer. The Oscar chances for Best Costume Design frontrunners “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer” were bolstered by their nominations for the 26th Costume Designer Guild Awards on January 4. The Cdga will be held February 21, 2024, at Neuehouse Hollywood.
While “Barbie” was nominated in the sci-fi/fantasy category — and should prevail over “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” — the other four compete in the period category against “Napoleon,” with “Poor Things” as the clear favorite here.
Meanwhile, the contemporary contenders include “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield,” and “Saltburn.” None is expected to make the final Oscar cut, but “Saltburn” is the flashy favorite here.
In terms of the Oscar race, it looks like a feminist battle between Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster “Barbie” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.

Awards Season Barbie is already proving to be a dominant force in the market.
Who could have imagined it was possible that a movie about a Mattel doll come to life would become not only the box office juggernaut of 2024 but also a growing awards magnet? We live in unpredictable times indeed, boys and girls. But now that “Barbie” has hauled in more than $1.4 billion worldwide and topped both the Golden Globes movie nominations with nine and now the Critics Choice Movie Awards (announced Wednesday morning) with a record-breaking 18, the film is more than just trending – it’s overachieving on a grand scale.
Or maybe we should call it just plain old achieving.
SEECritics Choice Movie Awards: ‘Barbie’ sets record with whopping 18 nominations
Should we have seen this coming? Maybe. Greta Gerwig’s comedic masterpiece is perhaps the one movie of 2023 that everyone is united on in love and admiration.

“My biggest challenge on ‘Oppenheimer’ was understanding the scope, understanding how we had to bring different periods across,” explains costume designer Ellen Mirojnick on the undertaking of the Christopher Nolan film. As she details, the epic look at the Manhattan Project and its architect J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) “took place over 45 years with ease in the cut, so you can’t have anything that’s gonna jump out of frame” in terms of her wardrobe choices. She discusses the scale of the task in a new video that Gold Derby is debuting exclusively, which also includes interviews with cast members and behind-the-scenes footage of filming. Watch the “Oppenheimer” exclusive video featurette above.
One of the key looks of the film for Mirojnick to get right was Oppenheimer’s trademark hat and pipe. She notes how the figure’s “silhouette from the beginning through the end of his life didn’t really change.

From production designers to composers, the creatives behind the biggest films of this year sat down to chat with Variety’s senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay during Variety’s A Night With Artisans. The creatives who helped build the Los Alamos set for “Oppenheimer” or acquired 1,000 blankets for “Killers of the Flower Moon” shared their creative processes and stories from set.
In six separate conversations, Tangcay spoke with the teams behind “Oppenheimer,” “Saltburn,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “American Fiction” and “The Color Purple.”

“She blended in — there was no ‘Kitty’s world,’” “Oppenheimer” production designer Ruth De Jong says of the woman portrayed by Emily Blunt in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster.
Kitty is a scientist with her own ambitions when she meets J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the man who led the atomic bomb project. Her career takes a backseat when she falls in love with him, and she watches her life slip by as his work overwhelms and consumes them both.
When she first appears in “Oppenheimer,” however, Kitty is a well-to-do woman filled with confidence — “so bright and alive and unwilling to contort and conform to the housewife ideal,” Blunt says.
And while the film very much centers around what is going inside Robert’s mind, Kitty keeps her husband grounded throughout the movie.
Editor Jennifer Lame took care to convey Kitty’s air of confidence when she and Robert first meet.

From the moment “Oppenheimer” first opened in July, it’s been at the top of many awards pundits’ Oscar predictions. But lead actor Cillian Murphy, who portrays J. Robert Oppenheimer, aka the “father of the atomic bomb,” tries “not to think about it too much.” As he explains, “When we’re making movies, you just wanna make the best movie possible. And the movie isn’t finished, really, until you show it to an audience. It’s very, very lovely to know that other people have enjoyed the movie … so I’m very flattered by all of it.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
As of this writing, the non-traditional biopic has amassed nearly $1 billion at the worldwide box office, a feat Murphy is “pleasantly surprised” by. The actor reveals, “We all knew we had a great movie, but you can’t ever tell. [Filmmaker Christopher Nolan] presents his films in a very particular way.

Cillian Murphy had to “sit down for a moment” and gather his thoughts when he received the out-of-the-blue call from director and longtime collaborator Christopher Nolan about playing the lead in his epic biographical thriller Oppenheimer.
Murphy said during Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles panel for the Universal film, “I knew it was a big one, but it was absolutely kind of electrifying feeling but also terrifying, but that’s the place I always want to be when I’m making work – I don’t ever want it to feel easy or safe, but this was a biggie and I knew it was a huge responsibility and a huge amount of work.”
Murphy plays the titular complicated and brilliant physicist tasked with leading the Manhattan Project, the secret effort to create the atom bomb.
