John Glenn, and when Glenn was elected, he resigned from the Senate so Ohio's governor could appoint Glenn to fill the seat, thereby adding to Glenn's seniority. In 1976 Metzenbaum defeated Senator Robert Taft Jr., Taft resigned on 28 December 1976, and Metzenbaum was appointed the next day to fill the vacancy before the term for which he was elected began on 3 January 1977.
