The much-awaited sequel to Vetrimaaran’s Viduthalai Part 1, which starred Soori and Vijay Sethupathi in the lead roles, is currently in the making. The film, titled Viduthalai Part 2, is expected to release in mid 20241. The film is based on the short story Thunaivan by B. Jeyamohan, and follows the lives of a police officer and a separatist leader in the 1960s.
One of the most interesting aspects of the film is that Vijay Sethupathi and Manju Warrier, who play pivotal roles in the film, have undergone a de-aging process for their characters. According to sources, the portions featuring Vijay Sethupathi and Manju Warrier are set in the 1960s, and hence the de-aging process was necessary to make them look younger.

CinemaIn ‘Natchathiram Nagargiradhu’, Pa Ranjith has shredded the plot and characters of ‘Minsara Kanavu’ to derive a more assertive narrative about love.It has been one year since Natchathiram Nagargiradhu released in cinemas worldwide. While some have enthusiastically appreciated Pa Ranjith’s attempt at addressing a range of contemporary socio-political topics, others have called it an experiment gone sour. Most commentators, however, agree that this movie saw the filmmaker flexing a novel story-telling muscle to communicate abstract yet progressive ideas. There is one fine detail that most reviewers and critics seem to have missed. Natchathiram Nagargiradhu has not emerged from a blank canvas. Instead, it artfully continues a conversation that was set in motion long ago. In the groundbreaking BBC docu series Ways of Seeing (1972), Marxist art critic John Berger says, “Remember that I am controlling and using for my own purposes the means of reproduction needed for these programmes … As with all programmes,...

OpinionMani Ratnam developed a new syntax for filmmaking, where along with powerful storytelling, the depiction of each frame counted. From the way scenes were staged to songs were choreographed, it was all by design and never by chance.Anand Kumar RSTamil cinema, for as long as it has existed, has been ruled by its stars. From Mgr-Sivaji and Kamal-Rajini to Ajith-Vijay now, stars in pairs have consistently held sway over the Tamil audience and the industry’s market dynamics. But even amid this, once in a while, you see the ascent of a director who makes a mark with his indelible style of filmmaking. In the years of 1960s and 70s, it was CV Sridhar who emerged as the first director whose films were sought after by filmgoers — especially the women. K Balachander would be the next, making his presence felt in the 70s and 80s, followed by Bharathiraja in the 80s and 90s.

If we rewind to exactly 25 years ago, we are transported to a time when private Tamil television (Sun TV) was only five years old and standalone theatres were still mostly the only place where we courted the stars. As it turns out, 1997 was a distinctive and extraordinary year for Tamil cinema. There was no shortage of critically acclaimed movies or blockbusters. A high was guaranteed practically every time you went to the theatre. Back then, before the age of social media, the movie-watching experience was so pure and so highly anticipated that satisfaction was always on the cards.

Quite an iconic film for the Tamil movie industry (and Indian cinema), “Bombay” is one of the highest grossing Tamil movies of all time, while A. R. Rahman’s work in the title is considered one of the greatest Indian soundtracks of all time. It is also a rather controversial production, particularly due to the depiction of inter-religious relations between a Muslim woman and a Hindu man, which led in bans in Singapore and Malaysia upon release. Even worse, two homemade bombs were thrown at the house of Director Mani Ratnam, who had to be hospitalized with shrapnel injuries.
The story starts in 1985, when Shekhar, the son an orthodox Hindu, returns to his coastal home village in Tamil Nadu, from Bombay where he is studying to be a journalist. His relationship with his father, Narayanan Pillai, is already tense, but things get worse after he notices Shaila Banu, a Muslim schoolgirl from the village,...

KollywoodHere's a list of Tamil songs, old and new, that are perfect for a dance party. Tnm StaffThe Tamil film industry has produced some of the best dancers in the country. Be it Kamal Haasan, Sridevi, Anand Babu, Prabhu Deva, Dhanush, Vijay, Sai Pallavi, Trisha, Silambarasan or Simran, these actors are a joy to watch on screen simply because of how they're able to dance with abandon. The songs in which they feature are regularly played at parties, too, because of their high recall value. However, we're in coronavirus times now and the only place where you can party is your home. But not going out doesn't mean you can't have some fun. All you need for a party, after all, is good food, drinks of your choice (alcoholic or otherwise), and great music! If you live alone, you can still get on a Zoom call with your friends and party together.

OpinionMy mother is in her late 70s today, her memory is fading, but her pick for her most favourite filmmaker continues to be Kb even today.Anand Kumar RSRavichandran NBack in the ‘70s, in my middle class household of five members, the only person who would watch movies was my mother. She would do that with her “lady” friends in the neighbourhood who were all in their mid-thirties. Typically, they would catch the matinee show at the nearby single screen cinemas. And in the days to follow, discussions and heated arguments around the movie, its story, the characters and its climax would dominate their daily evening ‘thinnai’ chats. As a small kid, these were my first induction sessions into the world of cinema. My mother and her group of women in the same milieu were quite choosy of the films they watched. If there was one filmmaker whose films they would never miss,...

Amidst this clutter though, few films deserve to be remembered and celebrated. Rajiv Menon’s Kandukondain Kandukondain (Kk), which completes 20 years today since its release, is one of them. I remember watching this film in Mumbai, back in the year 2000. It was probably the first Tamil film to be released with subtitles with an intention to reach the non-Tamil audiences. The presence of non-Tamil actors like Aishwarya Rai, Tabu and Pooja Batra (in a song sequence) perhaps influenced that marketing decision. And reach it did. The film ran to packed houses for a few weeks even in Mumbai. I vividly recall reading rave reviews of the film by Bollywood beat critics,...
