Best known for his role on Cheers as Sumner Sloan, whose character sets the entire series in motion on the pilot episode, ditching Diane Chambers (Shelley Long) at the bar. He returned for two more episodes later on.

McGuire was originally cast as Bill Mulderig, the Federal Narcotics Agent, who was the nemesis of NY detective Popeye Doyle. At the last minute, McGuire was replaced by actor/stuntman Bill Hickman.
