Truth Of Dare
Stars: Liam Boyle, Jack Gordon, Florence Hall, Nicky Henson, Jennie Jacques, Jason Maza, Tom Kane, David Oakes | Written by Matthew McGuchan | Directed by Robert Heath
I find with British horror, especially films with smaller budgets there is a tendency to stick to the mainstream idea of what is popular. Set up an injustice at in the first few minutes of the film then have a character come back for revenge. Its cliché, it’s over used and to be quite honest it’s boring. The ironic thing is though there is always a hidden gem that manages to shine through, down to some clever writing and actor choices. This is what you get with Truth or Dare.

*here be minor spoilers. Director: Robert Heath. Writer: Matthew McGuchan. Cast: Liam Boyle, Jack Gordon, Florence Hall, Nicky Henson, Jennie Jacques, Tom Kane, Jason Maza, and David Oakes. Truth or Dare is a revenge thriller created by director Robert Heath. Heath recently completed another dramatic thriller titled Sus in 2010. Heath has cast a wide range of actors for his latest. Arguably, Jennie Jacques (Shank) and television actor David Oakes have the most acting experience. Eleanour (Jacques) and Justin (Oakes) are also coincidentally the two main villains in this picture with Felix (Tom Kane) acting as a quiet and shy protagonist. Truth or Dare transitions from a revenge thriller into a gory horror picture thanks to a few twists along the way. And, this film is an enjoyable watch despite a few awkward scenes. The film's story is set up much like a trap in the first act. Justin invites several...

With regard to The Asphyx Sothcott says, "Essentially, last week my partner, Billy Murray, and I sat down with writer/director Matthew McGuchan and ripped our story apart in order to put it back together again and make the film we really want to. What we had was (like the original) a personally-motivated version of Frankenstein - and while it was a quality piece of writing, it wasn't quite what we want to give audiences. The Asphyx is a film I want to be judged on - I'm really proud of some of the others, but this one needs to be the special one. Where we are now is having Dr. Christina...

Black and Blue FIlms are making a name for themselves in the UK film industry with films such as Dead Cert and Devils Playground. They’re also the company behind the remake of classic British nasty Expose – a film which I am Eager to see. The next film on the remake block for Black and Blue Films is another British classic, The Asphyx, from producer Jonathan Sothcott and starring Danny Dyer and Alison Moody.
The guys at Dread Central got the low-down on The Asphyx remake direct from Sothcott himself, along with some fantastic concept art:

But he is a man quickly becoming obsessed with a curious and frightening question: What is the mysterious apparition found in the photographs of his dying subjects? Hugo brings to a family boating party his newest invention – a motion picture camera.

As far as remakes go, 1972's The Asphyx is a curious choice. Yet, writer-director Matthew McGuchan is going to take a crack at it for Black & Blue Films in 2010. "I've had my eye on it for a while," says producer Jonathan Sothcott, whose currently overseeing Dead Cert 's production in London. "There were a load of films made in the '70s that had really, really interesting concepts, but the filmmaking limitations of the time, and the budget and all kinds of things, stopped them being what they could be. The idea of scientists trying to isolate the spirit as it leaves the body I think is fantastic." Directed by Peter Newbrook, The Asphyx (the only film he directed in his career) concerned about a scientist whose experimentation with the...

Dave Legeno [the villain from The Cottage] is an absolute powerhouse, and Andy Tiernan is just hypnotic on screen.”
