In an amusingly meta instance of sci-fi imitating sci-fi, “Orphan Black” is getting a futuristic sequel series before anyone has time enough to miss the original. That’s either a big mistake or more of a good thing in a booming genre that could almost always do with more feminist entries.
Set in the year 2052, “Orphan Black: Echoes” stars executive producer Krysten Ritter as an amnesiac woman named Lucy who we meet unraveling the insidious impacts of a mysterious procedure she doesn’t remember having. In a classic streaming age mess-around, the IP extension comes just seven years after the Canadian cult hit became a household name in made-for-tv cloning.

Tatiana Maslany, who is coming off the first season of Disney+’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, is no stranger to kicking butt on the small screen.
As part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she plays lawyer Jennifer Walters, who “inherits” the superhuman qualities of her cousin Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) after a freak accident, and starts to attract the attention of nefarious organizations. Much like Sarah Manning’s clones, our readers came out in droves to support Tatiana Maslany. In our recent poll asking which of 2016’s drama lead Emmy champs is most likely to return this year, 70 percent picked the “Orphan Black” star over Rami Malek (“Mr. Robot”).
Both stars didn’t have the chance to defend their crowns, but only Maslany’s was out of necessity. The fifth and final season of “Orphan Black” premiered after last year’s Emmy eligibility period, so her absence was less alarming. Maybe people would’ve voted for her if they could. She will have to bank on her passionate base of supporters to land her a third nomination as it will have been a year since “Orphan Black” left the air.

Malek’s omission was far more cause for concern.

Television can offer magnificent surprises early, often, and anywhere in between. From series and pilots built around an unpredictable twist to moment-by-moment developments that’ll knock you for a loop, time is on TV’s side — and yours. Great thrillers, mysteries, and other dramatic fair can deliver shocking moments on the regular, while more and more comedies are also getting in on the risk/reward ratio benefitting those who know how to play the odds.
If fortune favors the bold, then consider what’s below a list of the boldest television auteurs (or at least their boldest gambles). Limiting it to 25 slots, IndieWire has culled the most shocking moments and best twists of the 21st century (so far). Each selection is indisputably memorable, meaningful, and — hopefully — not too morbid. Death can often be a surprise, so some of the selections below steer away from the sudden departures and look at other scenes with equal impact.
