Award-winning actor Aaron Lazar, known for his two decades of captivating audiences on Broadway and beyond, is set to release a powerful new album, Impossible Dream, featuring some of the brightest stars in theater, television, and music on August 16.

Lazar said, “I first sang ‘The Impossible Dream’ 24 years ago as a grad student in Cincinnati playing Don Quixote in The Man of La Mancha, as my impossible dream of becoming a professional actor was coming true. All these years later, the song and its message have become an anthem for me. In a very sad development, Carly Simon lost both of her sisters this week, with Broadway composer Lucy Simon dying of breast cancer Thursday and former opera singer Joanna Simon passing from thyroid cancer on Wednesday.
Both deaths were confirmed by a source close to pop superstar Carly. Lucy Simon was 82, Joanna Simon was 84.
Born into wealth and a rarified atmosphere of celebrity and literati to Simon & Schuster publisher Richard Simon and wife Andrea, the Simon sisters – their brother Peter was the youngest sibling – would all find their ways to success in professional music careers.
Lucy entered show business in the early 1960s when she and Carly formed the folk singing duo The Simon Sisters, performing in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and New York City’s Greenwich Village. In 1964, the sisters recorded and released the song “Wynken, Blynken & Nod” to moderate success.

Simon died Thursday at her home in Piedmont, New York, after a long battle with breast cancer, a family spokesperson announced.
She and Carly began their careers in Provincetown, Massachusetts, as The Simon Sisters, and their folk act opened for the likes of The Tarriers in Greenwich Village nightclubs. Their recording of “Wynken, Blynken & Nod” reached No. 73 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964.
Lucy Simon became the rare female composer to have a show on Broadway when The Secret Garden debuted in April 1991. “To say that this is a dream come true is an understatement,” marveled Sutton Foster in 2002 when Jerry Orbach and Doris Roberts called her name as the winner of the Tony Award for her performance in “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” Now exactly 20 years later, Foster could win her third trophy for her work in the revival of the classic Broadway musical “The Music Man,” starring opposite fellow Tony winner Hugh Jackman. Below, see a list of all seven of Sutton Foster’s Tony nominations and her two wins.

After 27 months, the Tony Awards returned on Sunday night to honor Broadway’s best. The ceremony — highlighting the shortened 2019-2020 season — served as an emotional ode to the power of live theater, as well as an elaborately produced advertisement to get audiences back to the Great White Way.
Split between streaming and live TV, viewers at home were treated to galvanic performances and moving speeches. Still, there’s plenty that cameras didn’t capture at the Winter Garden Theater in Manhattan. Here’s everything you didn’t see during the four-hour telecast.
A plea to wear masks
Broadway’s back, as audiences were reminded every few steps, and that meant pandemic-era safety protocols were in full force. Everyone had to be fully vaccinated in order to step foot in the theater, and anyone who walked the red carpet had to show proof of a negative Covid-19 test taken no more than 48 hours in advance.

Even though Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be shortened to just one pre-taped hour on TNT and TBS, the special In Memoriam segment will still be a highlight. Since the 2020 event aired on January 19, it will be over 14 months until the one on April 4. That means even more actors, actresses and members of SAG/AFTRA will hopefully be honored than the 40 people in the tribute last year.

The date for the 2020 Tony Awards ceremony, remains shrouded in mystery. Voting is already underway however. With the announcement that Tony voters will cast their ballots March 1-15, David Buchanan and I got together to discuss the outcomes in a 2021 Tony Awards predictions slugfest. What will these industry voters want to reward as Broadway theatres still remain shuttered during the pandemic? Watch David and I discuss which musical nominees might win top honors in the video above.
David and I are both predicting “Moulin Rouge!” to claim the coveted Best Musical prize. It embodies the escapism and grand spectacle that so many folks associate with Broadway. But I smell an upset brewing for “Jagged Little Pill.” The Alanis Morissette show has plenty of heart, covers pressing social issues, and has the most nominations of any musical. There is a void.
Where once there was sunlight.
There is a void.
Where once there was a marriage.
There is a void.
There is now an empty, dark abyss that has taken the place of the warm, comforting glow of the sun, a bridge over which love crossed freely.
And I can’t seem to cross over the darkness. I want to step over it, leap over it. I feel she wants me to. But I’m not prepared, I’m not equipped. It seems impossible.

With no Tony Awards this year to honor those Broadway stars and workers who have passed away, a new In Memoriam video directed by actor Raúl Esparza is picking up the mantle. Good News: The 2020 Tony Awards will be held virtually this fall, giving the shuttered Broadway industry a desperately needed shot of good will. Bad news: Only four new musicals opened before the new eligibility cut off date of February 19, 2019. The limited number of contenders has industry insiders scratching their heads as to what the musical categories will look like.
The four new musicals competing for the coveted Best Musical prize are “Jagged Little Pill,” “The Lightning Thief,” “Moulin Rouge!,” and “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.” Under the usual Tony Awards rules for show categories, there can only be three nominees for categories with four or five eligible contenders. So one of these four musicals will be left in the dust unless there is a tie for third place.

Stephanie J. Block is the frontrunner to win Best Actress in a Musical at this Sunday’s Tonys for her dynamic embodiment of Cher in “The Cher Show.” However, Tony history is not on her side. You have to go back to 2000 to find a leading lady who won without her show at least being in contention for Best Musical or Best Musical Revival.
Heather Headley won for “Aida,” edging out Toni Collette (“The Wild Party”), Rebecca Luker (“The Music Man”), the late Marin Mazzie and future Tony record-setter Audra McDonald (“Marie Christine”). Collette, Luker, and Mazzie all headlined productions that competed for one of the top categories.
It was something of a shock when “Aida” was left out of the Best Musical category. Perhaps that snub built sentiment for “Aida” and its powerhouse star. Voters certainly disagreed with the nominating committee as the tuner took home an additional three Tony Awards.
