Actor Alexander Siddig, who played the plucky, handsome young medical officer Dr. Julian Bashir on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," began the series credited as Siddig El Fadil, his professional name from the start of his career until he changed it in 1995. Dr. Bashir was something of a naïf in the show's first few seasons, and would, in subsequent seasons, come to outgrow his once-firmly-held immature notions that practicing medicine in desperate locations is a bright, plucky adventure. He quickly came to realize that he merely needed to work hard to help people in need, and that righteousness was a reward unto itself. Unlike a lot of the "young" characters on "Star Trek" (Wesley Crusher and Harry Kim come to mind), Dr. Bashir was allowed to grow up; he had personality traits other than his youth.

Among the dozen Emmy Awards “Game of Thrones” collected in 2019 for its final season was one for casting, which made it the first drama program to achieve a third victory in that category. Each time it was honored there, it also won Best Drama Series, setting a precedent that “Succession” could emulate this year after having taken both prizes in 2020 and 2022. Although it is heavily favored to clinch the top honor again, its potential casting win might not come as easily or at all, given the remarkably stiff competition it faces from “The White Lotus.”
After winning 10 Emmys in 2022 while classified as a limited series, “The White Lotus” is now competing in seven specific drama series categories, including casting. Its genre shift was triggered by its second season’s incorporation of previously established characters. As it goes against “Succession” in this race, it will also have to fend off two-time winner “The Crown,...

Last year’s breakout hit “Yellowjackets” swarmed awards season with seven Emmy nominations including Best Drama Series in 2022. The Showtime drama is looking to outperform those numbers this year by submitting 18 actors for consideration from its Season 2 cast. The Emmy ballots were officially unveiled on the Television Academy’s website on June 15, the same day nominations-round voting began (it will conclude on June 26 at 10:00 p.m.).
Most notable is Melanie Lynskey, who earned a Best Actress bid for playing Shauna Sadecki last year and currently ranks second in our odds to win the prize this time around. Cast mates joining her in the Best Drama Actress field are Tawny Cypress (Taissa Turner), Juliette Lewis (Natalie Scatorccio) and the teen version of Shauna, Sophie Nélisse.

Yellowjackets creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson had been working on the pitch for the survival drama when they heard of a Lord of the Flies feature film idea floating around in 2017.
“That was more of an ‘oh no’ moment, which happens very frequently when you’re coming up with ideas and working on pitches — there’s just some kind of synchronicity that tends to happen,” Lyle told THR Presents on Thursday night at Harriet’s Rooftop in Los Angeles, California. “It did feel very different. It was a film that they were going to do, and it was literally Lord of the Flies, but gender swapped. But what I think struck us was, I looked at the comments because I’m always very curious what people have to say about things, and the comments were very brutal, but in a way that...

We see it often in shows: flashbacks or flash-forwards to give the audience a deeper glimpse into the lives of — or what life has in store for — our favorite characters. But to establish that deep connection with the characters for viewers, casting directors search far and wide for physical and spiritual similarities to cast multiple actors in the same role, younger or older.
NBC’s This Is Us has been a prime example of doing it right for the past eight years, and this Emmys season, shows like Yellowjackets, Pachinko and Night Sky showcase younger and older versions of key characters as a primary component of the storyline.
Showtime’s Yellowjackets took it a step further, though. It has two simultaneous storylines that intertwine: The first, set during the 1990s, follows a group of teenage girls lost in the wilderness after a plane crash,...

Melanie Lynskey is having a moment. The actress has two plum roles this TV season — plane crash survivor Shauna in Showtime’s “Yellowjackets,” for which she won a Critics Choice Award, and real-life ax-murder victim Betty Gore in Hulu’s “Candy.” She landed a “Variety” cover story and made her very first late-night appearance in her career as a guest on “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” “It’s funny to be having this many first moments at 45 years old,” says Lynskey in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “It’s not something I ever expected.” Watch the full video chat above.

Production designer Brian Kane has the challenge of replicating the ’90s on top of contemporary New Jersey in the Showtime drama “Yellowjackets.” The series centers on a group of teen girls who experience a plane crash in 1996, with some of them surviving to 2021 as they try to unpack the traumas of their youth. With both storylines running through each episode, the production designer points out that the ’90s scenes aren’t necessarily flashbacks. Rather, “they influence each other,” says Kane in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. Watch the full video chat with Kane above.
One of the most important settings for the show is the wilderness, where the girls create their own society. As Kane explains, “the wilderness isn’t just a location, it’s a character in our show. It is both the captor and the savior for our girls.” Kane’s team found an area in Surrey,...

Tawny Cypress had no idea where her character would be going when she first signed onto “Yellowjackets.” The Showtime drama centers on a group of teenage girls who survive a plane crash, try to rebuild in the wilderness and return to civilization as changed people. The actress plays the older version of Taissa, an ambitious leader who is now, in 2021, running for state senate despite several skeletons in her closet related to what went down in the woods. As the season goes on, Taissa’s darker layers are gradually revealed. “I knew there was going to be something deliciously fun about her and I didn’t know what,” says Cypress in an exclusive new webchat for Gold Derby, of her early days on the show. “It was all a revelation to me going along.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Did you know that being in medicine is a good prerequisite for becoming a casting director? Well, you do now, because not only was that what “As We See It” casting director Cami Patton was initially studying, but her first boss was also once in the medical field. “Oddly, I was pre-med, but my sister was an actress and I followed her around on interviews and I always knew everybody that was there and she was like, ‘Oh, you should think about casting,’ and my first boss was a registered nurse, Eileen Knight,” Patton tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: Casting Directors group panel (watch the exclusive group roundtable video above). “It was very interesting. We both really loved the study of medicine, but didn’t really wanna practice. And it just ended up being a natural fit.”

If you’re a fan of “Yellowjackets,” chances are you can’t get over how good the casting is. The Showtime drama follows the lives of four high school soccer teammates surviving in the Canadian wilderness for 19 months after their plane crashes in 1996 in addition to their adult counterparts 25 years later in present day. The dual performances for the main quartet feel so in sync that it has even caught casting directors Libby Goldstein and Junie Lowry-Johnson by surprise.

He also wrote scripts, executive produced and starred as abolitionist John Brown, approaching history with a witty bent. Meanwhile, Little Marvin blended classic horror genre elements with the all-too-real terror of otherness and racism when a Black family moves into a predominantly white neighborhood in “Them” for Amazon Prime Video
Both men dabbled in the past for these limited series, with “The Good Lord Bird” set in the 1850s and “Them” set a century later, in the 1950s. But it was their very modern mindsets about the subject matter, as well as the importance of teamwork with their casts and production crews, that helped inspire such passionate responses to the projects.

Welcome to Rumorville! Here you can learn about casting news that’s about to break in Hollywood. These speculations might be only rumors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t follow the trail all the way to the audition room. “Deadwood”Fans of “Deadwood” who have anxiously been awaiting the reality of a movie might have some hope. We know there’s a script, but TVLine reported this week that the team has secured financing and will go into production in fall 2018. They also say HBO hasn’t given the film a “formal green light,” but it’s more progress than has been made since the show went off the air. Casting isn’t even a consideration on the project as of now, but it’s worth noting that Junie Lowry-Johnson and Libby Goldstein cast the series, so they could be back if the movie gets the official go ahead.

Let’s talk about sex, Baby.
Okay, the Salt-n-Pepa song won’t be popping up in Showtime’s new drama series, Masters Of Sex, which is set in the 1950s when Dr. William Masters (played by Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) conducted their revolutionary study of sex. The series is based on Thomas Maier’s biography, Masters Of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson.
Since the show is very much focused on sex, gay characters also are a part of the series.. In the first few episodes, a lesbian prostitute (Broadway’s Annaleigh Ashford) helps Masters move his study into a brothel in exchange for her getting her tubes untied so she can have a baby and have a chance at a ‘normal life’ with a man. Junie Lowry-Johnson and Libby Goldstein on how they found the hit Showtime series' five main actors. Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) Junie Lowry-Johnson: If we’d said Damian’s name at the beginning, he wouldn’t have gotten much attention, because we were initially looking at well-known actors. Libby Goldstein: People we wanted didn’t want us. A lot of them passed — you’d be surprised who. J.L.J.: One actor really wanted to know whether Brody was a good guy. He didn’t want to play a bad one. L.G.: That’s why he didn’t get the part. Idiot. Also, we wanted someone who looked all-American. J.L.J.: Believable as having been a soldier. L.G.: And that could go on to politics. J.L.J.: We were scrambling, and someone had seen a movie called Keane [a 2004 drama about a father coping with his daughter’s abduction]. When we all saw that film,...

A few cable networks are diving into the pilot season frenzy, securing casting directors for their own pilots amid the broadcast rush. Two drama pilots and a series pickup from TNT, as well as a drama pilot from Bravo, have secured casting directors, Backstage has learned. You could have mistaken TNT for a broadcast network two weeks ago, as they ordered two high-profile drama pilots from big-name producers. The first, called “Murder in the First,” hails from “NYPD Blue” writer/executive producer Steven Bochco. It will follow two San Francisco homicide detectives as they investigate a single case over the course of an entire season (presuming the pilot gets a series order). The show will cover all phases of the investigation, through the arrest of a suspect and the trial. Plans are to shoot in San Francisco, although a start date has yet to be determined. Junie Lowry-Johnson will handle casting.

As far as pilot orders go this season, NBC has been the most prolific network, getting a jump with several off-cycle orders and augmenting those with a slew of green lights over the past two weeks. The Peacock also seems to be moving more quickly than the competition to secure casting directors for its projects, as Backstage has learned of six more pilots that have closed deals for casting. On the comedy side, “Assistance” will be cast by Geraldine Leder. The project—one of a few pilots about the plight of underlings that have gotten an order this season—centers on a young woman who copes with her demanding boss with the help of her fiancé as well as her "work husband." Another comedy with a female lead, “Girlfriend in a Coma,” will be cast by Junie Lowry-Johnson. The pilot tells the story of a woman who awakens from a...

The major television networks are scrambling to cast dozens of new pilots for next season, which means new opportunities for actors. ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and the CW are each taking different approaches to their array of drama and comedy projects, so Backstage takes a look at all of the latest developments of this pilot season. Nbcnbc has ordered 11 comedy pilots so far this season, including “About a Boy,” based on the book by Nick Hornby that was adapted into a 2002 film starring Hugh Grant, which will be cast by Cami Patton; “Joe, Joe & Jane,” being cast by Jeff Greenberg, about a children's book author who must deal with his needy wife and his best friend/co-author; and “Assistance,” about a female assistant who must deal with her demanding boss with the help of her “work husband” and her fiancé, to be cast by Geraldine Leder. Lisa Soltau was living in Seattle when her friend Bonnie Gillespie sent her a book she had written called "Casting Qs," a compilation of interviews with casting directors. "I read it and I absolutely loved all the aspects of the job," says Soltau. "I loved the entertainment industry and movies and television. The process of casting sounded wonderful."She called one of the two casting offices in Seattle and ended up working as an intern there for about six months. But the CD told her she should move to New York or Los Angeles if she really wanted to pursue a career in casting. "I picked L.A. because I had lived there once for about three years and I thought it would be easier to acclimate there," Soltau says. "Plus I wanted to work on 'Six Feet Under,' which was airing at the time.

Spoiler Alert! Pam will not get to avenge those great Betsey Johnson pumps she ruined tracking the creature that turned out to be meanad Maryann in Sunday night's season finale of True Blood (HBO, 9 p.m. Et). The following is a list of the top 25 Power Casting Directors in film and television (including Casting Director of the Year, Debra Zane; see page 9). We began with more than 100 candidates. In some cases, collaborations were so closely tied that we considered multiple people as one entity.
