Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor are two half-brothers with a whole lot of problems.
The duo star as the titular Raymond and Ray for the upcoming AppleTV+ dramedy “Raymond & Ray,” premiering October 21 on the streamer. Raymond and Ray come to terms with their estranged father’s death by attending his funeral and dredging up their past — emotionally as well as literally, as the pair grab actual shovels to dig up their father’s grave.
Raymond and Ray then embark on a road trip to get to know their deceased father. Their path leads them to a nurse (Sophie Okonedo) who cared for their dad, as well as their dad’s mistress (Maribel Verdú) and her son (Maxim Swinton), who is their other half-brother. Oscar Nuñez, Vondie Curtis-Hall, and Todd Louiso also star.
“The old man was always screwing with us,” Raymond (McGregor) says to Ray (Hawke) in the trailer.

Hulu’s High Fidelity, released on Valentine’s Day, deftly walks the line between remake and reinvention. The terrific new series features a lot of material specific to its characters, like the uniquely self-destructive quality of its Rob (Zoë Kravitz), or the running gag about how she’s never seen The Sopranos. But along the way, it also frequently pays homage to the classic Nick Hornby book, and the equally classic 2000 film starring John Cusack as Rob.
Here are some of the series’ most interesting remixes of familiar moments from the book and/or movie.

Rob, the record-store-owning hero of Nick Hornby’s classic novel High Fidelity, has strong opinions on many musical subjects, particularly the making and deployment of a great mixtape. He has rules about what kinds of songs to use, in what order, and believes that structuring the playlist just the right way says more about who he is and what he cares about than anything he could say with his own words.
In the 25 years since the book was published, Hornby’s words have been used and reinterpreted plenty. There was the 2000 High Fidelity film,...

Exclusive: High Fidelity is on the move. Disney+ 10-episode series starring Zoë Kravitz, which had been set up at Disney’s upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service, will relocate to fellow streaming platform Hulu.
The decision comes a couple of weeks after the close of Disney’s $71.3 billion acquisition of Fox assets, which gave Disney controlling 60% stake in Hulu.
Disney+ is being billed as a service featuring programming that appeals to all ages while still conforming with the Disney brand. It runs the gamut of different demographics but it is considered a place for family-friendly fare vs. the more adult-oriented Hulu.

"Hi Rob. You f**king asshole."
Rob Gordon is a great example of a character not having to be likeable to be interesting and entertaining (He made it to number 16 on our totally definitive list of the Top 50 assholes in cinema).
Yet you can’t help but root for Rob, because he’s played by John Cusack, and John Cusack can make hitmen sympathetic. Plus, as evidenced by the first article I linked to, I am in no position to criticize anyone for making endless lists. As you are reading a website called Den of Geek, there’s a chance you can also relate to Rob’s obsessive behaviour.

After lengthy negotiations, Zoë Kravitz ("Big Little Lies") has been tapped to star and executive produce "High Fidelity," the reimagining of Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel and the 2000 feature starring John Cusack with a female point of view, which had been in development at Disney’s upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service.
With Kravitz on board, the project has received a formal 10-episode order. The "High Fidelity" reboot hails from writers Veronica West & Sarah Kucserka, the Midnight Radio producing team and ABC Signature Studios (Smilf), and the cable/streaming division of ABC Studios. Midnight Radio is comprised of Scott Rosenberg — who co-wrote the High Fidelity feature — Jeff Pinkner, Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec.
Kravitz will play the ultimate music fan, a record store owner who’s obsessed with pop culture and Top Five lists, a female take on the character played in the movie by Cusack.

There’s a movie opening this week that you should be paying more attention to. It’s one of 2018’s very best, features an Oscar worthy lead performance, and announces a brilliant female filmmaker as someone to really watch out for. The movie in question? All About Nina, which I’ve been raving about since the Tribeca Film Festival. This weekend marks the time where it finally hits theaters. The performance in question belongs to Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who will blow you mind. The filmmaker in question is Eva Vives, who should be at the top of ever executive’s list when looking for an exciting director to meet with. It all adds up to something that’s among the five best things I’ve seen all year. The flick is phenomenal from start to finish. Once again, for those of you who forgot, the film is a pitch black...

Back at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, the best movie, by far, was Eva Vives’ All About Nina. Featuring the best performance to date from Mary Elizabeth Winstead, it was a real gem. With The Orchard putting it out into theaters next month, a Trailer has dropped for the flick. This film remains a real favorite of mine, so it’s one that will heavily mentioned in the weeks to come, you can take that to the bank. Today, we’ll be focusing on the Trailer itself, which you can see below. First up, however, some more raving about this movie. It’s one of my top five films of the year right now, so that kind of goes without saying. Vives and Winstead deserve plenty of attention when the precursor season hits in the late fall/early winter. The movie is a pitch black comedy with a...

A “High Fidelity” TV series is in the works for Disney’s upcoming streaming service.
The show is based on Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel and the 2000 movie starring John Cusack. The series will have a new take on the book and movie, centering around a female record store owner instead of a man.
Veronica West and Sarah Kucserka are writing the romantic comedy series, and it comes from ABC Signature Studios with Midnight Radio. West and Kucserka have recently worked on “Bull,” “Chicago Fire,” and “Ugly Betty,” among others. They’re both repped by Wme.

Exclusive: I hear a romantic comedy TV series inspired by Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel High Fidelity and the 2000 feature starring John Cusack is in early development for Disney’s upcoming direct-to-consumer service. The project, a gender-swapped take on the classic title, comes from writers Veronica West and Sarah Kucserka (Bull, Ugly Betty), the Midnight Radio producing team and ABC Signature Studios (Smilf), the cable/streaming division of ABC Studios. Written by West and Kucserka, the High Fidelity TV series is described as a departure from the book and the movie while still capturing the romantic comedy and authentic spirit of the original source materials. I hear it centers on a record store owner — a female take on the character played in the movie by Cusack — talking straight to the camera as she chronicles past relationships.

Once a staple of Hollywood cinema, the film noir has seemingly become almost solely the realm of independent fare. Studio honchos just don’t fawn over them like they used to. You can argue about whether that’s a bad thing or not, but that’s just the way it is currently. The likes of Brick, for example, showcase that small scale versions are still perfectly done. This week, a new indie noir comes out that deserves to find an audience. It’s Gemini, a modern noir that occasionally subverts the genre in pretty interesting ways. In some ways, it’s exactly what you’d expect. In others, it really goes in a different direction. The movie is a Hollywood set noir, though one that’s definitely on the unique side. Jill LeBeau (Lola Kirke) is an assistant to actress Heather Anderson (Zoë Kravitz), and the two clearly share a friendship as well.

Did you know Tim Robbins has never been nominated for an Emmy? The Oscar winner hasn’t been as much of a fixture on television screens as he has been on the big screen, but now he could be recognized by the television academy with a Best Drama Actor bid for “Here and Now.” Created by Alan Ball (“True Blood,” “Six Feet Under,” “American Beauty”), this freshman HBO series centers on a multi-racial family whose bond is fractured when one of their children starts seeing things the rest cannot. Robbins plays Greg Boatwright, a philosophy professor and the family patriarch. In honor of his latest small-screen achievement, let’s take a look back at some of his best big-screen outings. Any geek who understands movies or music more than they do romance will see themselves in Stephen Frears’ wonderfully smart anti-rom-com, High Fidelity. The head geek is played by John Cusack who holds court in his record store surrounded by the one thing he has an uncomplicated relationship with: records. He’s also surrounded by a terrific supporting cast including Jack Black, Todd Louiso and a cameo from some rock n’ roller named Bruce.

In The Last Word, Shirley MacLaine stars as Harriet Lauler, a successful, wealthy but not beloved retired businesswoman, who decides to write her own obituary prior to her death. To craft the perfect obit, she hires a young writer at the local newspaper, played by Amanda Seyfried, mostly for her skill in making unpleasant people sound admirable.
Shirley MacLaine plays the kind of flinty character she has played so often and so well since Terms Of Endearment. The film looks like a showcase for the iconic star and indeed MacLaine is the best thing in this unremarkable if well-meaning film. Surveying Melanie Lynskey’s diverse body of work, from her impressive debut in Peter Jackson’s “Heavenly Creatures” 20 years ago to the Duplass Brothers’ “Togetherness,” one thing is clear: Lynskey takes her project choices as seriously as she does her performances.
Over the last few years, Lynskey has appeared in a robust offering of indie films: Joe Swanberg’s “Happy Christmas,” Todd Louiso’s “Hello I Must Be Going,” and her friend Clea Duvall’s directorial debut, “The Intervention,” for which she received a special jury award from the Sundance Film Festival. She continues her winning streak with Linus Phillips’ “Rainbow Time,” an offbeat comedy that explores sensitive territory without devolving into cliche.
The film stars Phillips as Shonzi, a developmentally delayed jokester with a fondness for women, filmmaking, and his brother Todd (Timm Sharp). Lynskey plays Lyndsay, Todd’s idealistic girlfriend, who coddles Shonzi during trying moments when Todd would rather punch him.

We all have predisposed notions about the infamous “romantic comedy.” As with other genres, there’s a large subsection of offerings, giving it a bad name. But, for every tired, cliché-driven comedy, there is another impressive offering that redefines the genre, garners plenty of laughs, and tells an honest story about love and relationships, however warped they may be. In the coming weeks, we’ll take a look at the fifty romantic comedy films that should be seen. These may not all be classic films, but they certainly put a stamp on the industry and the genre we affectionately call “rom-coms.”

Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard deliver gripping performances in a dark, atmospheric and bloody MacBeth. While this dark, bloody film is powerful, this film should not be one’s first introduction to Shakespeare’s classic, as a significant amount of the play itself is missing. No boiling cauldron and “double, double toil and trouble” open this version of the Scottish play, although the three “weird sisters” appear after a battle with their prophetic pronouncements. It is more an updated interpretation than the definitive screen adaption but still a must-see for fans of the Bard, as well as a worthy addition to the film canon of his works.
Brooding, bloody and filled with ghosts, director Justin Kurzel’s MacBeth takes place in a ruggedly beautiful landscape, creating a film that is visually striking. As the film unfolds, the screen often suffused with red, and landscapes take on increasingly darker tones. Battle scenes,...

Macbeth
Directed by Justin Kurzel
Written by Todd Louiso, Michael Lesslie and Jacob Koskoff (Based on the play by Shakespeare)
U.K., France, U.S., 2015
There have been countless adaptations of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet, but with the exception of Roman Polanski’s 1971 film, Macbeth has largely gone ignored by cinema. Justin Kurzel, fresh off the success of The Snowtown Murders, may have delivered the definitive take on the Scottish Thane. From the very beginning Kurzel marks that his vision will be different, as the film opens on the funeral of a small child, then transitions to bloody combat. Usually set on the stage, depictions of war in Macbeth are avoided because of budget constraints and available space–a shame considering how influential those scenes prove to be. The violence and trauma of the warring tribes and his child’s death sets the stage for Macbeth’s...

From the producers of The King’S Speech comes the story of a fearless Scottish General, Macbeth (Michael Fassbender), whose ambitious wife (Marion Cotillard) urges him to use wicked means to gain power of the throne. A thrilling interpretation of one of Shakespeare’s most famous and compelling characters, MacBeth is a dramatic reimagining of the realities of war-torn times and a tale of all-consuming passion and ambition.

Brutal. Ferocious. Intense. If you think those words apply to the latest technical challenge on Bake Off, then Justin Kurzel's visually stunning adaptation of Shakespeare's 'Scottish play' should set you straight. Spearheaded by Michael Fassbender's mesmerising lead performance, this tragic tale grips your senses from the beginning and never lets go.
Fassbender initially cuts a traumatised yet courageous figure, leading his men into bloody battle before encountering three witches armed with a prophecy. They tell him that he's destined to become the King of Scotland, an ambition later fuelled by the malevolent manipulations of his wife (Marion Cotillard). Deception, murder and madness ensue, amidst a gritty and breathtaking landscape that alternates texturally between fire and ice.
When such a familiar text (the scourge of many a Gcse English Lit student) is subject to yet another adaption, you have to question its purpose. What new elements can it bring?...

"Ultimately, however, the prophecies of the witches prove misleading, and Macbeth alienates the nobility of Scotland, his wife commits suicide and he is defeated in battle by 'Prince Malcolm'. The final film in competition, Justin Kurzel’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth delivers a spectacle of dripping blood, slow-motion battle scenes, sprawling Scottish highlands and Michael Fassbender. Fassbender stars as the Scottish warrior turned regicide and paranoid monarch, who after a particularly bloody battle has a vision of three witches predicting he will be King of Scotland. Macbeth starts out as an honorable soldier loyal to King Duncan (David Thewlis) and decides to only become king the “natural way”. However, after imprudently sharing the witches’ prophecy with his wife, played by Marion Cotillard, Macbeth finds himself constrained by her ambitious power lust.

Of all of William Shakespeare’s classic works, Macbeth must surely be amongst his most famous.
Certainly, in the more than 400 years since its first publication, it has been one of the most frequently adapted; revived regularly on stage and re-envisioned time and again in the age of cinema and television.
Now comes a bold and daring version starring Academy-Award nominee Michael Fassbender (12 Years A Slave) and Academy-Award winner Marion Cotillard (La Vie En Rose).
Directed by Justin Kurzel (Snowtown), MacBeth had its World Premiere at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and was the final movie to screen in Competition.
In his review, Guy Lodge (Variety) praises the director’s “thrillingly elemental new adaptation. Fearsomely visceral and impeccably performed, it’s a brisk, bracing update, even as it remains exquisitely in period.”

Cannes — This Scottish General is a mad warrior. He takes down one victim after another, seemingly fueled by an endless stream of rage. He applies war paint to the faces of his teenage soldiers and throws them onto the battlefield, eventually haunted by their wasted deaths. Constant war has made Macbeth a man on the edge of madness, and that’s exactly what director Justin Kurzel wants to exploit in his stylistic new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic play. One of Shakespeare’s most acclaimed creations, “Macbeth” has been adapted as a film or TV film at least 15 times in some form or another, with the most notable interpretations coming from Orson Wells, Roman Polanski and Akira Kurosawa (“Throne of Blood”). Kurzel differentiates his predecessors by incorporating a striking and gritty aesthetic to the proceedings while also abridging the story to allow for a shorter movie-going experience. (Polanski’s...

It has been a long and winding road for "Macbeth," Aussie director Justin Kurzel's revamp of the Shakespeare classic of guilt and revenge, to finally get to the Cannes competition this year. This adaptation of the deliciously dark masterpiece of evil stars Michael Fassbender as the titular power-mongering general and Marion Cotillard as the scheming, hand-wringing Lady Macbeth. Kurzel debuted in 2011 with the unsettling and powerful "Snowtown," which centered on the grisly true story of a spate of brutal cult murders in an atrophying Aussie suburb. So "Macbeth" feels like a natural progression, another grim portrait of power gone horribly awry. "Macbeth" has been adapted time and again, most notably by director Roman Polanski in 1971 just after Sharon Tate's murder. But if it's anything like "Snowtown," Kurzel's new revamp, from a script by Jacob Koskoff and Todd Louiso, will be visceral and real. Some are calling this a red carpet.

Some movies, no matter how old they are, never age a day. Their situations and themes remain as relevant now as when they were first released. Watching them today, they reflect and comment on our present in ways they couldn’t possibly have anticipated. Every month we’re going to pick a movie from the past that does just that, and explore what it has to say about the here and now. There are creaky moments in High Fidelity. Any time you hear Rob (John Cusack) talk about making a mix tape, the movie groans with its pre-iPod era technology. And yet many of High Fidelity’s cultural sensibilities have become anything but antiquated. From a vinyl resurgence to pop culture snobbery, much of the movie has only ripened with relevance since it was released 14 years ago. 1. Though we won't be seeing Australian director Justin Kurzel's "Macbeth" until 2015, a few still enticing new stills from the film have landed. This adaptation of Shakespeare's deliciously dark masterpiece of evil stars Michael Fassbender as the titular power-mongering general and Marion Cotillard as the scheming, hand-wringing Lady Macbeth. Justin Kurzel confidently made his directorial debut in 2011 with the powerful "Snowtown," which centered on the grizzly true story of a spate of cult murders in a dreary Australian suburb. With that film in mind, "Macbeth" feels like a natural progression, and another grim portrait of power gone horribly awry. "Macbeth" has been adapted time and again, most notably by director Roman Polanski in 1971 just after Sharon Tate's murder. But if it's anything like "Snowtown," Kurzel's new revamp, from a script by Jacob Koskoff and Todd Louiso, ought to be a visceral and disturbing experience. Count us excited for this one.
