‘Ripley’ Review: Andrew Scott and Dakota Fanning in Netflix’s Moody Fresh Take on Patricia Highsmith
The Italy of Anthony Minghella’s remarkable 1999 adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley is positively bursting with la dolce vita.
It’s an ebullient and passionate world of religious and artistic fervor and when Matt Damon’s Tom Ripley begins to kill to secure his place in that world, he does so with the improvisational flair of the Blue Note jazz albums he studied to help him assimilate. And who could blame Damon’s Ripley for desiring, by any means necessary, to stay? As photographed by the great John Seale, the entire cast of The Talented Mr. Ripley practically glows. Not to justify serial murder, but who among us wouldn’t kill to spend just a little more time close to this version of Jude Law, much less to become him?
Steven Zaillian’s Netflix take on Patricia Highsmith’s novel has done away with the titular modifier. In Ripley,...

Editor’s Note: The following post contains spoilers for “The New Look” Episode 9.
With the penultimate episode of “The New Look” comes the end of the road for Elsa Lombardi (Emily Mortimer), one of the most fascinating and fictionalized characters in Todd Kessler’s Apple TV+ series. After a fight with Coco (Juliette Binoche), a critical interaction with Spatz (Claes Bang), and a fatal overdose, Elsa is found dead while Coco weeps over her body.
But a quick scan of history reveals that Elsa Lombardi never existed. According to Kessler, Mortimer’s character is an amalgam of two figures in Chanel’s life, fused for narrative purposes to serve the series. One of those is the French-Polish musician Misia Sert, who met Chanel in 1917, and the other is British socialite Vera Lombardi, whose lifestyle inspired the House of Chanel.
The real-life Lombardi was Chanel’s way into British high society,...

Award-winning Peruvian multi-hyphenate Joanna Lombardi, formerly in charge of heading Movistar’s original content slate for Latin America, dives into documentary with her latest feature “Stay Still” (“Quédate Quieto”), selected to screen in competition at the upcoming Málaga Festival, running Mar. 1-10.
Produced by Lombardi alongside Hernán Musaluppi co-headed Cimarrón Cine (“El Motoarrebatador”) and Enid “Pinky” Campos (“Dioses”), the film – selected for San Sebastian’s Co-Production Forum in 2021 – centers on a gravedigger and two young women vying for security and a place to settle down.
“At first, I approached this story because I wanted to relay what it was like moment by moment to invade a piece of land. Find the place, demarcate the space and have to stay there, without moving, so that they don’t take it away from you. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce ended Super Bowl Lviii with a kiss like a fairy-tale ending. The NFL has leaned into the coverage between the singer-songwriter and the Kansas City Chiefs star and now they have released audio of the couple leading up to the kiss.
Cameras and microphones caught the moment Swift and Kelce celebrated the Chiefs taking the Lombardi trophy with a kiss and Inside the NFL dropped the footage in the “Mic’d Up” segment.
“Thank you for coming, baby,” Kelce told Swift on the field. “Thank you. Thank you for the support.”
As the couple hugged, Swift said, “Oh, I cannot believe that. I can’t believe you! How did you do that?”

Taylor Swift has shattered virtually every major record in the music industry, and as she lives her best life supporting her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, she’s also breaking the brains of right-wingers.
For months now, the digital fever swamps have been fuming over everything and anything Swift-related. Her popularity, the success of the Eras Tour, her relationship, her appearances at NFL games, and especially her politics. The Chiefs won the AFC championship on Sunday, punching the team’s (and potentially Swift’s) ticket to the Super Bowl in February.

From its opening landscape shot of a forest complete with moody voice on top, The Retaliators looks very good indeed. There is definitely an energy reminiscent of a heavy metal music video here, in both sound and visuals, but it works well with the theme and the tone of the movie. Directed by Samuel Gonzalez Jr. and Bridget Smith and penned by the team of Darren Geare and Jeff Allen Geare, this is a good old revenge flick and boy-oh-boy do I enjoy a revenge flick.
There is something very bitterly precise about this, something that looks you in the eye and doesn’t look away, a solid sledgehammer to the face in the guise of vengeance.

Spurred by modest state funds, growing TV support and co-production pacts, filmmaking in Peru is on the rise and with it, a rousing presence on the international stage.
Peruvian pics snagged six awards at March’s Malaga Film Festival and industry component Mafiz, an unprecedented haul for the event’s country guest of honor.
Plaudits went to Mauricio Frey’s “Estados generales,” Francesca Canepa’s “La otra orilla,” Ximena Valdivia’s “4eber,” documentary “Hatun Phaqcha” by Delia Ackerman and Leonardo Barbuy’s “Diogenes.”
“This is the first time that Peru has brought back so many awards from a single event,” notes Erika Chavez, head of the culture ministry’s audiovisual directorate, Dafo, who points out both national and regional films funds have ticked up since launching alongside Peru’s 2019 Film Law.

The Retaliators follows a small-town pastor as he uncovers a dark world trying to find answers after his daughter is brutally murdered.
Co-director Michael Lombardi, who plays the Bishop, recently sat down for an exclusive with uInterview founder Erik Meers to discuss how he understands his character.
“The interesting thing about relating to this character is I can understand their religious background,” Lombardi shared. “I was an altar boy when I was young. I get the religious aspect very much. I layered this guy, too, like was he a guy who maybe didn’t come from the best place, but then looked to God and found some answers so he’s choosing to be passive in situations, but he has something underlying like we all do as human beings? An upstanding pastor uncovers a dark and twisted underworld as he searches for answers surrounding his daughter’s brutal murder. A high-octane original soundtrack and cameos from some of the biggest names in rock music set the tone as this horror-thriller reveals a game of revenge played using a new set of rules.
All of the promotion I have seen for The Retaliators has been centred on some of the cast being members of rock and metal bands. Many of whom feature on the soundtrack too. I guess promoting it like this will get a certain amount of eyes on the movie from fans of these bands...

Part of a perfect 1956 matinee double bill, Alex Gordon’s supernatural thriller features an iconic monster, a piece of real horror art from monster-maker Paul Blaisdell. The production can best be described as ‘pedestrian’ but there’s no denying that the movie is an odd nostalgic favorite — a great poster helps. The cast mixes veterans with new blood — but the real reason to watch is starlet Marla English. This one should have been a classic.
