“The Invisible Man” star Oliver Jackson-Cohen and “Grantchester’s” Jeremy Neumark Jones have been tapped to lead upcoming World War II feature “The World Will Tremble.”
Written and directed by Lior Geller, the film tells the true story of a group pf prisoners who broke out of the Third Reich’s first Nazi death camp, Chelmno.

They are joined by Anton Lesser (“Andor”), David Kross (“The Reader”), Michael Fox (“Dunkirk”), Charlie MacGechan (“We Die Young”), Michael Epp (“The Beekeeper”), Danny Scheinmann (“Stan & Ollie”), Tim Bergmann and George Lenz.

Sean Bean and Miranda Richardson are set to star alongside John Malkovich in the biopic of Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache, Variety can reveal.
Also joining the cast is Ben Schnetzer (“The Book Thief”), who has replaced Rupert Friend after scheduling difficulties meant Friend had to drop out of the project. Schnetzer will play a young version of Celebidachi while Malkovich will play the conductor later in life.
They will be joined by Kate Phillips (“Downton Abbey”), Anton Lesser (“Game of Thrones”) and Charlie Rowe (“Rocketman”).
“The Yellow Tie” tells the story of controversial classical conductor Sergiu Celibidache, one of Romania’s best known classical music artists. He battled homelessness and prejudice before becoming the youngest ever conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

It’s tough to say goodbye. Endeavour’s ninth series concluded over a decade spent with the Cowley Station (later Thames Valley) gang, so it’s only natural for fans feeling bereft to seek out their favourites’ next steps. Having hung up his Fred Thursday hat, Roger Allam can be seen this year on screen and stage, while Shaun Evans is taking on a very different kind of crime drama role.
From Endeavour production company Mammoth Screen, there’s a new period drama co-production, plus the return of series creator Russell Lewis’ next ITV detective drama, starring John Simm. Find all the info below.

Reaching into Inspector Morse’s past for a prequel series was a gamble that paid off handsomely. Endeavour, which followed the young detective over a seven-year period from constable to detective sergeant in the 1960s and early 1970s, just concluded after nine series. It was an exemplary prequel, beloved by newcomers and by fans of the original Inspector Morse, which it referenced playfully and with imagination.
Endeavour’s success was not a given, nor should it be laid at the feet of simple IP recognition. Prime Suspect 1973, which attempted the same trick by following a younger version of Helen Mirren’s celebrated Dci Jane Tennison, lasted only one series. Young Wallander on Netflix made it to two, but the response has been lukewarm. The 1930s-set Perry Mason starring Matthew Rhys in the lead role is faring better on HBO, but it’s clear that it’s not enough simply to...

Warning: contains spoilers for the Endeavour Series 9 finale ‘Exeunt’.
With funereal imagery and talk of death, the Endeavour finale presaged tragedy, but then took its leave with merciful care. Its characters were dispatched like a fond parent putting to bed a favourite child. All survived, and went away with assurances to us about their futures. Bright, DeBryn, Miss Frazil, Jim, Jakes, and the Thursdays were generously waved off into the sunshine in an emotional ending.
All survived. But did they? The one character we knew had to live past the finale’s credits was, in a cryptic way that befits this playful series, perhaps its sole victim. This whole time, we’ve been clocking up the many and frequent portents of Fred’s death, forgetting that this ending was always destined to symbolically kill off somebody else – Endeavour, to leave behind Morse. Just Morse. That was perhaps the significance of the gunshot in the churchyard,...

If you’re a fan of TV shows that require a lot of work, 1899 is for you. The new series, a German-produced word-of-mouth hit that features 11 different languages, is easily the most complex series out there right now. It follows migrants aboard an ocean liner who come across an alarming discovery while on the high seas: another ship that went missing days before. So far, so simple.
It’s when a few of these characters decide to explore the boat, though, that things take a mind-bending turn. Let’s just say, watching with a pen and notepad close at hand is advised. It’s a show designed to confound and, for those with a predilection for mystery layered upon mystery, it will lure you in hook, line and sinker. But there’s just one problem: the show is on Netflix.
In fairness, the streaming service was very kind to Dark,...

Denise Gough took it as a sign.

Warning: contains major spoilers for the 1899 finale.
Ever tried to pick a piece of eggshell out of a just-cracked egg? It’s right there, but the slippery forces at play keep sliding it out of grasp. That’s our brains trying to make sense of Netflix series 1899. Just when you think you’ve got a grip on the truth behind the Kerberos, the Prometheus, the simulation and why the Creator did what they did, away it slides, back into the goop.
The first big twist came at the end of episode three ‘The Fog’, when we saw the characters of this supposedly 19th century story being watched on multiple TV screens. From there, anachronistic tech kept appearing, from Daniel’s pocket device to his electric torch, to the First Mate’s triangular messaging system. Elliot regenerated in that cabinet, somebody froze time, and, as if remote-controlled, most of the ship...

Throughout each episode of "Andor" to this point, the Tony Gilroy-created series has taken pains to set itself apart from the previous installments of Disney-owned "Star Wars" that have come before. As established in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," the protagonist Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) is far different than any other Rebel we've yet seen. The central story unfolds in a way that puts story and character first -- not Easter eggs, cross-pollinating cameos, and other types of fan-service. And in terms of villains, there might not be a single other figure in canon who can rival the terrifying, methodical, and relentless fanaticism of Syril Karn.
Portrayed brilliantly (and chillingly) by the always thoughtful actor Kyle Soller, Syril has undergone an oddly compelling arc from a jumped-up security goon to a pathetic wretch quietly enduring his mother's icy disapproval to an obsessive true believer in the Empire's authoritarian cause.

The long-awaited 1899 premieres Thursday, November 17, on Netflix.
After watching the episodes provided to critics for review, it's clear the series is another winner from Dark creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese.
1899 takes viewers to the high seas for a story focused on a group of migrants traveling from London on a steamship to start a new life in New York City.
However, things turn mysterious when they encounter another migrant ship adrift in the ocean.
The mysteries crafted by the creatives leave you with more questions than answers, but the beauty of the writing is that we get a lot of payoff throughout the first six episodes.
There's an immediate sense of dread in the series premiere that doesn't subside as crazy happenings occur, leaving us with the feeling that things will get worse before they get better.

One of the more interesting characters on "Andor" is Dedra Meero, the Imperial Security Bureau officer played by Denise Gough. When we first meet Dedra, the audience learns to identify with her through the challenges she faces in her job. It just so happens that she works for the Empire, traditionally the villains of the "Star Wars" universe. Yet "Andor" is already a show built around a Rebel "hero" whose first act when we met him in "Rogue One" was to kill an injured informant in cold blood. The series has continued to explore the gray areas in-between the conventional, clear-cut, black-or-white divisions of "Star Wars."
Even in the the original "Star Wars" trilogy, there were Imperial officers you could root for, like Admiral Piett (Kenneth Colley), if only because their position was so precarious at all times. One wrong move and Darth Vader was liable to permanently relieve them...

There's only one way out for those avoiding spoilers for "Andor." Turn back now if you haven't watched the latest episode.
The morning after a new episode of a buzzy new show releases is hardly the time to make grand proclamations or sweeping statements about quality. But sometimes, one just has to make an exception. Episode 10 of "Andor" truly does feel like the absolute peak of this shockingly compelling addition to the "Star Wars" franchise. Titled "One Way Out" (you can check out /Film's recap by Bryan Young here), the dark and thrilling hour focused predominantly on Cassian Andor's (Diego Luna) prison break, but it also wrapped up several key narrative threads from this latest mini-arc within the overall series. But one much more minor subplot runs the risk of getting lost in the hype, despite offering one of the best improvements on the recently-concluded sequel trilogy that we've yet seen.

If you were a fan of Netflix’s Dark, then the next mind-bending series from creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar looks to be right up your alley. Netflix has released another trailer for 1899, a mystery series which follows the passengers of an immigrant ship encountering the biggest mystery of their lives on their journey across the cast and treacherous Atlantic Ocean.
Set against Jimi Hendrix’s cover of All Along the Watchtower, the 1899 trailer looks like a wild ride, full of disturbing imagery and mysteries just begging to be solved. Baran bo Odar has previously teased that 1899 will be unlike Dark in a lot of ways. “Dark was not about action at all, but this is really an action show, with a lot of violence, beating, running, screaming,” Odar said. “I think it’s going to be exciting to watch with the audience [to see] if they love this new puzzle too,...

"None of this makes any sense…" Netflix has revealed an official trailer for 1899, a mysterious new sci-fi supernatural thriller series from the creators of the very popular "Dark" German sci-fi series on Netflix. Full of hope for a better future, passengers aboard a ship to the New World sail into a nightmare when they find a second vessel adrift on the open sea. On their journey across the vast and treacherous Atlantic Ocean, the passengers of the Kerberos encounter the biggest mystery of their lives. Welcome to 1899, an immersive new series from the creators of Dark. This seems like a story about the Bermuda Triangle, but they wouldn't pass through that region going to New York from Europe. Then again, triangles plays a big part in this, appearing everywhere including on tattoos and hidden messages and this weird switch board. Hmm. What is going on in this?! The massive international cast includes Emily Beecham,...

It’s kind of weird that there hasn’t been more rock music in “Star Wars” up until now. It’s story of rebellion in a galaxy that, while long ago and far away, presumably has some analog synthesizers and drum kits to go with its giant starships and faster-than-light space travel. For so many “Star Wars” episodes on film and TV, however, the series’ mode of storytelling and the music that goes with it has been rousing adventures and orchestral epics. Much like The Force, John Williams will be with us always.
But the narrative ambitions of the latest “Star Wars” story, “Andor,” are more of a b-side. The prequel series for Diego Luna’s “Rogue One” character is still a space adventure story of an unlikely hero called to oppose the evil Empire — but the show is, thrillingly, much messier in the execution, and its hero is much less starry-eyed.

The first three episodes of LucasFilm‘s new Star Wars series, Andor, are now officially available! Disney+ released the installments together as a block, seemingly as a tactic to secure future viewers due to the show’s slow burn pacing. That said, the remainder of the first season will be making its way to the streaming service in weekly doses.
Helmed by Doctor Who and Sherlock director Toby Haynes, the initial three-episode Andor arc reintroduces us to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s rebel spy Cassian Andor, who died heroically at the end of that movie. As Andor is a prequel to that prequel, we meet the character here at an earlier stage in his life when he is still just a shifty thief who will kill mercilessly to cover his tracks, and who doesn’t exactly have his eyes on the revolutionary prize quite yet. However, by the end of episode three,...

Warning: contains spoilers for Endeavour season 7.
In the closing moments of Endeavour’s seventh season, Morse lost the woman he loved. Violetta (Stephanie Leonidas) died in his arms after sacrificing her life by jumping in front of the bullet her husband Ludo meant for Morse. If it weren’t for Fred Thursday, Morse might well have followed her. Fearing his bagman was in danger, Fred had left his and Win’s Christmas celebrations and rushed to Venice, where he saved Morse’s life by shooting the villainous Ludo, who fell – apparently dead – into a canal.
Before Morse lost Violetta, he came very close to losing Fred too. Over the year that season seven’s episodes ‘Oracle’, ‘Raga’ and ‘Zenana’ unfurled, a chilly distance developed between the pair. It culminated in a stand-up fight over a dead body, a telling off from both Max de Bryn and Jim Strange, Morse requesting a transfer to Kidlington,...

BAFTA-nominated I Hate Suzie star Leila Farzad and Broadchurch’s Andrew Buchan are to lead BBC One’s Better, the latest drama from prolific Chernobyl producer Sister.
Farzad, who was BAFTA-nominated for her role in Billie Piper and Lucy Prebble’s dramedy, will play Di Lou Slack, a quick-witted policewoman whose success lies on a foundation of deceit and corruption.
Buchan, who is also penning Sister drama Passenger for ITV, plays Col McHugh, a charming businessman and property developer who heads a citywide drug trafficking gang.
The show from Humans scribes Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent tells of the pair’s bond set in a world where they have created their own version of “right” and “wrong.”
Farzad called it a “a brilliant fresh take on the morality tale,” adding: “I am excited to have the opportunity to play Lou Slack, the vehicle through which we explore the multivalent layers of good and bad.

Detective Sergeant Endeavour Morse (Shaun Evans) returns to Masterpiece on PBS Sunday, June 19 for three more 90-minute episodes of the popular British mystery series Endeavour. “I’m here to make sure justice gets done,” Morse asserts in the Season 8 trailer, which shows the Oxford detective and his colleagues on the trail of more murderers in 1971. He’s joined once again by Detective Chief Inspector Fred Thursday (Roger Allam), his loyal senior officer/father figure; Chief Superintendent Reginald Bright (Anton Lesser), their recently widowed boss; and Detective Sergeant Jim Strange (Sean Rigby). Other longtime characters are also returning: pathologist Max DeBryn (James Bradshaw), newspaper editor Dorothea Frazil (Abigail Thaw), and Thursday’s wife Win (Caroline O’Neill) and daughter Joan (Sara Vickers), whom Morse has been pining for since the mid-’60s. Joan was noticeably absent from Season 7 due to the actress’s real-life pregnancy. In those episodes, set in 1970, Morse had...

Morse’s plan to transfer to another force has either been scrapped or put on the back burner in series eight, which finds the detective in Oxford and the Castle Gate team tackling “the most challenging of cases so far,” according to the official press release. This review contains A Discovery of Witches spoilers.
An episode as fun as this one almost makes it a shame that A Discovery of Witches is a continuing story and not a case-of-the-week romp. Imagine it: Matthew and Diana through the centuries, tracking down magical items, exposing historical figures as massive, Anti-Semitic prongs, having punch-ups with the royal guards and, at the end of every episode, readying the horses for a swift getaway. Exhilaration itself!
Enjoyable as that arrangement might be, we’d miss out on so much. As season two nears the home straight, its many elements are being drawn together in a way that an episodic format could never provide. The Book of Life, Matthew’s blood rage, the Oxford attacks and Knox’s pursuit are gathering for the final three episodes. All those trails of dominoes set up over the last seven weeks feel as though they...

I’m always relieved, if not excited, to encounter a horror film that isn’t about anything supernatural. A lot of today’s audiences wouldn’t even consider that a horror film; if it doesn’t goose you with effects or try for some version of the uncanny, it’s just a drama. But horror doesn’t need to be fantasy, and when it isn’t you can feel like it’s out to spook you without cheating. “Kindred” is a demonstration of how a naturalistic horror film can be derivative, in the most flagrant and shameless way, and still work.
The director, Joe Marcantonio (it’s his first feature), has laced together “Rosemary’s Baby” and “Get Out,” and he’s done it so obviously that you keep ticking off the moments and concepts the film reminds you of. One of our greatest working directors has wrapped production on his latest film. Following 2011’s The Deep Blue Sea, 2015’s Sunset Song, and 2016’s A Quiet Passion, British director Terence Davies was set to begin shooting Benediction, about World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon, earlier this year, but the pandemic halted plans. He was able to recently resume and now the film has wrapped.
Led by Jack Lowden he plays Sassoon, marking Davies’ second biopic of a poet, immediately following his Emily Dickinson film. Sassoon was known for his epic, satirical poems detailing trench warfare and the horrors of a war in which he fought bravely but spoke out against. He was also a closeted gay man in Britain, where those in power considered his sexual identity a crime.
The film, which has debuted its first image above via Deadline, also stars Peter Capaldi as Sassoon in his older years,...

"You're not well... You don't even seem to realize that." IFC Midnight has revealed the first official trailer for a "psychological thriller rippling with suspense" titled Kindred, from filmmaker Joe Marcantonio. This one is skipping out on October entirely, and opening at the beginning of November this fall. Kindred follows vulnerable mother-to-be Charlotte, played by Tamara Lawrance, as she is taken in by her recently deceased boyfriend's mother and her step-son, who seem increasingly obsessed with her every move. Soon plagued by strange hallucinations, Charlotte's suspicions grow about Margaret and Thomas' intentions for her unborn child. The cast includes Fiona Shaw, Jack Lowden, Edward Holcroft, Chloe Pirrie, & Anton Lesser. This looks extra discomforting and intense, especially when all the weird things start happening in the second half of the trailer. Definitely worth a look. Here's the first official trailer for Joe Marcantonio's Kindred, direct from IFC's YouTube: When...

“What is dead may never die,” goes the saying on the Iron Islands, and that certainly appears to hold true on “Game of Thrones.” After the game-changing resurrection of Jon Snow a couple seasons back, the series has firmly established a world where death is not necessarily the end. Now that “Game of Thrones” is coming to a close, it’s the show’s last chance to bring back some beloved or not-so-beloved characters.
The fantasy series has a few built-in ways for people to return from the dead or at least become undead, which is, you know, a return of sorts. Priests of the Red God R’hllor has seen fit to resurrect both Jon Snow and Beric Dondarrion (Richard Dormer), the latter a total of six times, although they were slightly changed afterward. Down south in King’s Landing, disgraced maester Qyburn (Anton Lesser) took the putrefying body...
