Of any Pixar film to sequelise, a follow-up to Inside Out makes perhaps the most inherent sense. In fact, the ending of the first film actively invites it. While a new status quo is established in Riley’s mind – with Joy and Sadness reconciled – there’s a big ‘Puberty’ button just waiting to be pressed, and a tantalising question from Amy Poehler’s Joy: “After all, Riley’s 12 now. What could happen?” The answer is, a lot. Hence, Inside Out 2 will see the influx of several new emotions in Riley’s headquarters, set to rock her world all over again – a reflection of the total upheaval that comes with adolescence.
As Poehler tells Empire, that process of emotional evolution never really ends – and her hope is that there’ll be many more Inside Out movies to come, reflecting that journey. “I just think that they should make these films like Seven Up,...

The majority of Pixar films are not to be watched without tissues. From the furnace farewell in Toy Story 3, to the ‘Married Life’ sequence in Up, to the ‘Remember Me’ scene in Coco, the studio tends to have one hand placed firmly on your tear-ducts. And that’s not to mention Inside Out, perhaps the most emotionally effective of any Pixar film. The ‘death’ of Bing Bong, the first foray through young Riley’s mind, the reconciliation of Joy and Sadness… it’s a non-stop heart-squeezer. And that’s a tough act to follow for this year’s Inside Out 2, following Riley through puberty as a raft of new emotions – chiefly Anxiety, plus Envy, Embarrassment and Ennui – come into play.
According to incoming writer Dave Holstein, the newly-developed ‘Belief System’ in Riley’s mind isn’t just a cool environment for the sequel to explore – it’s going...

Some of the biggest laughs of CinemaCon came from Disney and Pixar’s well-received debut of the first 35 minutes of “Inside Out 2,” the sequel to its beloved Oscar-winning original film about a young girl named Riley and the emotions in her head. The sequel opens June 14.
Amy Poehler, who returns as the emotion Joy, was on hand in Las Vegas Thursday to introduce the “new story that captures the beauty and hilarity of the emotions we experience on a daily basis.”
It begins with Riley – now entering her teens – back playing ice hockey while reintroducing the emotions from the first film: Joy, Sadness (Phyllis Smith) and Anger (Lewis Black) along with Fear and Disgust. Riley has grown to be kind, and with her friends is among the players invited to hockey camp.

In keeping with CinemaCon tradition, Disney this afternoon treated attendees to the first 35 minutes of its latest Pixar movie; this year being Inside Out 2.
The sequel to the 2015 pic brings viewers back into the mind of the now-teenage Riley (Kensington Tallman) as her emotions try to keep up with her new feelings. And while Pixar has gotten the short end of the stick during the pandemic with its movies Soul, Luca and Turning Red being sent to Disney+ and Lightyear shunned by Toy Story purists, Inside Out 2 had the Colosseum in stitches.
It was punctuated by the humor of Amy Poehler and Lewis Black, along with Maya Hawke’s scene-stealing turn as the antagonist Anxiety, who takes over the soul of young teen Riley from the feelings of Joy, Anger, Sadness and Fear. Let’s also not forget about Envy (Ayo Edebiri), who is in cahoots with Anxiety for the spirit of Riley.

Emotions are high this afternoon as Pixar debuts a full Inside Out 2 trailer, teasing more of the plot while introducing several new elements to Riley’s psyche. The new trailer arrived just as Pixar Studios invited us to visit their studio later this month to explore Pixar’s highly-anticipated sequel to Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen’s 2015 animated original. I’ll be representing JoBlo during the event and could not be more excited! It’s been a dream of mine to visit Pixar Studios for decades. Make sure you visit the site closer to the film’s release as I report what I saw and share more details about the upcoming sequel!

The premise of "Captain Marvel" was borne out of unique, if limiting, circumstances. The film was the 21st entry in Marvel's Cinematic Universe, and the first to put a female hero center stage. Perhaps more than any MCU film that'd preceded it, "Captain Marvel" had a complicated brief to adhere to. It was introducing one of the most prolific heroes in Marvel history at a veritable late point in the franchise, just before "Avengers: Endgame" brought about the end of the Infinity Saga. "Captain Marvel" also needed to establish the title heroine as someone with a history, all while avoiding a decades' worth of continuity concerns.
Where had Carol Danvers been while the Avengers defended an alien attack, or assembled against Thanos in "Infinity War"? "Captain Marvel" had a bevy of questions to answer — or, more accurately, to avoid — and according to insider book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios,...

Is anyone else hearing things or are those just the voices in my head? For once, this isn't a sign of serious psychological problems, but simply another tease for one of Pixar Studios' most highly-anticipated sequels yet. I can still remember that rainy Saturday during the summer of 2015 while I was babysitting my little cousins and figured I'd surprise them with an impromptu trip to the theaters to see "Inside Out." Unfortunately, it turned out that everybody had the same idea, and all the showings were already sold out ... so we ended up settling for "Minions" instead. But don't worry, this story has a happy ending since we eventually got around to seeing the brilliant emotional rollercoaster and all agreed that it was better than "Minions" inadvertently confirming some discomfiting connections to Adolf Hitler.
In any case, we're finally getting a follow-up to one of Pixar's best original movies...

Theatrical movies truly came back in 2023. Despite a major strike and the ongoing effects of the Covid pandemic, audiences returned in droves to watch big releases. From the twin tentpoles of Barbie and Oppenheimer to the more niche faves such as Five Nights at Freddy’s, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, and John Wick: Chapter 4, the cinematic slate of 2023 gave fans of every variety a reason to get back to the cinemas.
Moviemakers hope to continue this trend in 2024, and the key strategy seems to be sequels, prequels, and remakes. Some of these movies come from the artists who captured audiences’ hearts in the first place, while others come from fresh faces, hoping to infuse a familiar tale with new energy.
Some of the big names include a third Sonic the Hedgehog movie, a new continuation of the shocking and shockingly successful Terrifier story, the Netflix movie Beverly Hills Cop 4,...

Fantasy is a genre that is often hard done by the awards groups, particularly the academy. Occasionally, the odd masterpiece such as Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, which won 17 Oscars, will break their barrier but, in general, the genre doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Even “Harry Potter” failed to earn an Oscar win and was never nominated in any above-the-line category.
However, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” is poised to be the next fantastical film that makes the academy’s voters sit up and take notice. Part romance, part ghost story, the film is loosely based on Taichi Yamada‘s 1987 novel “Strangers.” The story follows Andrew Scott‘s Adam as a writer struggling with his latest project who forms a relationship with Paul Mescal‘s Harry. As their relationship progresses, Adam finds himself drawn to his past and visits his hometown only...

How fitting is it that on the morning after the official end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, one of the first new trailers we get is from a movie about unleashing all sorts of heightened emotions? This moment of perfectly-timed collective catharsis comes courtesy of Pixar, as the animation studio has released our initial look at one of their most highly-anticipated sequels ever: "Inside Out 2." The 2015 original left nary a dry eye in the room after introducing the world to young Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) and the torrent of preadolescent feelings swirling around her head. And just when we thought we could start to recover from what happened to the lovable Bing Bong (Richard Kind), they've gone ahead with a sequel that's sure to be another emotional roller coaster.

It’s an exciting time for Pixar fans as the trailer for ‘Inside Out 2’ has been released, showcasing a thrilling new addition to Riley’s emotional palette: Anxiety. Voiced by Maya Hawke, this character joins the familiar faces of Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust in Riley’s mind. As Riley steps into her teenage years, these emotions are set to navigate an even more complex world.
Directed by Kelsey Mann and written by Meg LeFauve, who were both a part of the first film, ‘Inside Out 2’ brings back the essence of the original movie with a fresh twist. The first ‘Inside Out’ was a massive hit, bagging the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2016. It was praised for its insightful portrayal of emotions in a young girl’s mind as she struggled with a big move and the challenges of growing up.

Guess Joy is hard at work for Pixar fans, because “Inside Out 2” has just dropped its first trailer.
“Inside Out 2” is the sequel to 2015’s animated coming-of-age film “Inside Out.” The first film centered on 11-year-old Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) and the five emotions in her brain, led by a star-studded cast: Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), Fear (Bill Hader) and Anger (Lewis Black). In the sequel trailer, a new emotion is introduced: the frazzled, orange Anxiety.
After reported salary disputes, Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling are not returning as Fear and Disgust in the sequel. They have been replaced by Tony Hale and Liza Lapira, respectively.

The world is never a nice place in the stories of Roald Dahl. Across the beloved British author's vast body of literature, one will find works about abusive caretakers, sadistic authority figures, and horrible fantasy characters itching to do harm to children. Just as often, though, his tales center on courageous kids and kindly adults willing and able to stand up to these bad grownups and terrifying monsters. It's why Dahl's writing continues to resonate with younger generations, despite the ongoing struggle to reconcile the timeless messages of his novels and short stories with Dahl's many failings as a human being.
Having acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company back in 2021, Netflix has a financial motive for keeping Dahl's stories alive and well in the general public's memory. The streamer has already released a well-received film adaptation of the "Matilda" stage musical based on Dahl's book of the same name,...

Exclusive: Ed Solomon, film and television writer, has teamed up with the Black List to host Word by Word. The show will broadcast live on Zoom starting Thursday, June 29.
“During a strike years ago, I took some writing classes in order to challenge the way I was approaching my work,” Solomon said in a statement. “This time, I wanted to open it up for others who maybe felt the same. This led to the idea of making a space for creatives at every stage of their practice and career to ask questions and hear others talk about things that aren’t in writing books or better taught elsewhere–in particular, things about the inner process.”
He continued, “I want this series to be casual, accessible, personal, honest, and (hopefully) interesting… but most of all, fun. I’m truly looking forward to learning from the many incredible guests who will be participating.

Exclusive: Veteran TV lit agent Amy Retzinger is departing Verve where she has been a partner for more than 11 years. She just confirmed her exit in a company email with the subject “New Adventures…”
In it, Retzinger revealed that she is leaving agenting and plans to focus her efforts on a plastics reclamation startup, acting on her passion about eliminating single-use plastics. She also may pursue career opportunities in hospitality, I hear. This coming summer, Retzinger and her family will be moving to Portugal where their children have been enrolled in school for next fall.
Retzinger was the first agent outside Verve’s founding trio of Bryan Besser, Adam Levine, and Bill Weinstein to join the partnership two years after the agency was launched. She added TV lit experience to Verve, whose founding partners all hailed from the feature side of lit representation, and spearheaded the agency’s television strategy.

Audiences of all ages love to watch old and new Disney movies based on classic fairy tales. Several years ago, Disney announced they were working on a version of Jack and the Beanstalk named Gigantic. Skillful people were working on the film, and two Academy Award-winning individuals were behind the music. One of them is even an Egot winner. However, the film never saw the light of day.
Disney canceled ‘Gigantic’ due to creative differences
Gigantic would have taken place in Spain, where Jack discovers giants living in the clouds. Fans of the original story felt excited by the adaptation, but it would never happen. According to MsMojo, Disney and Pixar canceled Gigantic about two years into production.
The reason for the cancellation? Unspecified creative differences. Nevertheless, the movie could have been Disney’s next hit due to the people working on it.

Weinstein’s clients include J.D. One of the big reveals from last year’s D23 Expo was that Pixar will be returning to the world of Riley and her colorful emotions with “Inside Out 2,” scheduled to come out on June 14, 2024. During the announcement, original “Inside Out” director (and Pixar’s chief creative officer) Pete Docter was joined by Amy Poehler, who voiced Joy.
Noticeably absent were other actors from the original film – Phyllis Smith (who played Sadness), Bill Hader (Fear), Lewis Black (Anger) and Mindy Kaling (Disgust). Rumors persisted that several of the actors weren’t coming back because of salary disputes. Now, TheWrap can confirm that Kaling will not be back.
While speaking to TheWrap about her new HBO Max series “Velma,” Kaling said that she wouldn’t be returning for the follow-up film, this time directed by “Onward” head of story Kelsey Mann and written, once again, by Meg LeFauve.

As December approaches, Netflix is giving the well-reviewed Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio a high-profile debut.
Netflix Animation — despite its challenging year on the business side — has a strong and varied slate of animated feature contenders, the most notable being del Toro’s moving stop-motion retelling of Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio, which is having a limited theatrical rollout ahead of its Dec. 9 streaming debut.
Netflix burst onto the animation scene in 2019, releasing its first original animated feature, the Christmas movie Klaus, directed by Sergio Pablos, as well as French film I Lost My Body, from Jérémy Clapin. Both movies earned Oscar nominations in 2020, and Netflix has had at least one category nomination each year since. It did win an animated short Oscar in 2021, for If Anything Happens I Love You, but the streaming service is still vying for its first animated feature category win.

Cartoon Saloon’s “My Father’s Dragon” (streaming on Netflix November 11), the whimsical 2D adaptation of Ruth Stiles Gannett’s classic children’s book, got some Oscar heat this week by winning the Special Jury prize at the Animation Is Film Festival. It’s quite a contrast to Irish director Nora Twomey’s Oscar-nominated directorial debut, “The Breadwinner,” based on Deborah Ellis’ popular YA novel about Afghan oppression.
But the mere suggestion that “My Father’s Dragon” is kid-friendlier registers a protest from the director. The tone might be gentler, but the themes of parenting and puberty are very complex, she insists.

Like a department store that pulls out its winter holiday items weeks before All Hallows' Eve, Netflix isn't going to let a little thing like the calendar stop it from bombarding its subscribers with Christmas movies in November. That's not to say the streamer's exclusive yuletide rom-coms are all bad — quite the opposite, in fact (consider this your friendly reminder to finally watch "Single All the Way" this year).
Fortunately, if films like "Falling for Christmas" (aka the long-awaited Lindsay Lohan Netflix Christmas movie) aren't your bag, there are plenty of other options on the service to choose from that month. Perhaps you'd be more inclined to watch "Slumberland," Francis Lawrence's fantasy film adaptation of Winsor McCay's classic "Little Nemo in Slumberland" comic strips starring Jason Momoa as a shaggy-furred half-man, half-animal with mountain goat horns and an impeccably flamboyant fashion sense? Children’s literature loves few things as much as a mighty monster who remains, against all outward appearances, defiantly benign — one who sets out to soothe young nightmares after initially stoking them, ultimately proving that fears and anxieties aren’t limited to little folk. Boris, the cheerfully dorky title character in Ruth Stiles Gannett’s 1948 book “My Father’s Dragon,” is cut from the same soft felt as Frank L. Baum’s Cowardly Lion, Roald Dahl’s Big Friendly Giant or Jill Murphy’s Worst Witch. A would-be flying fire-breather who hasn’t yet found his wings or his flames, he has even more growing up to do than fearful 10-year-old hero Elmer, and their mutual guilelessness sets the tone for Irish animator Nora Twomey’s winningly sweet-natured, visually transporting adaptation.

A beloved children’s novel is turned into a charming animation in My Father’s Dragon, which is world premiering at the BFI London Film Festival. Oscar-nominated director Nora Twomey (The Breadwinner) helms a story of childhood friendship based on the 1948 novel by Ruth Stiles Gannett, with animation from Cartoon Saloon and a screenplay by Meg LeFauve (Inside Out). It’s a sweet adventure with appeal for young kids and a starry voice cast including Jacob Tremblay as hero Elmer, and – in one of the film’s more amusing moments – Whoopi Goldberg as a cat.
In the opening scenes, a narrator (Mary Kay Place) introduces her father, Elmer, who had a magical experience some time ago. We meet Elmer when his mother (Golshifteh Farahani) is running a modest but successful retail business, involving her son in the day-to-day workings of the store.

"My Father's Dragon" is a 2022 animated feature that feels like a classic. Between the charming hand-drawn aesthetic, the imaginative setting, and the myth-like narrative structure, it has that rare quality of being truly timeless; this is a film that could have come out forty years ago, and will feel as relevant generations from now as it does today.
And I worry that no-one else will like it.
Directed by Irish animator and director Nora Twomey ("The Breadwinner"), "My Father's Dragon" tells the story of a boy who finds himself on an unexpected adventure. When he and his mother lose their shop and fall on hard times, Elmer (Jacob Tremblay) runs away from home, vowing to raise the money to reopen the family business. Elmer has a knack for finding things and prides himself on being a fixer, which only makes it harder for him to accept that some problems in life don't have answers.

Ruth Stiles Gannett’s 1948 Newbery Honor children’s fantasy novel, My Father’s Dragon, gets Cartoon Saloon treatment in Nora Twomey’s lovingly hand-crafted feature adaptation. Brought to life by a starry voice cast headed by Jacob Tremblay and Gaten Matarazzo as a 10-year-old boy named Elmer and Boris, the dragon with whom he discovers the rewards of friendship and bravery, respectively, the film takes its visual inspiration directly from the original illustrations by the author’s stepmother, Ruth Chrisman Gannett. Cartoon Saloon is one of the best animation studios working today. The Irish studio has continuously given us gorgeously-drawn tales that combine fantasy with reality, unafraid to hit some hard truths about life, particularly the sins of the past, while still delivering fun and exciting adventures for the whole family. From their Irish Folklore Trilogy and its exploration of mythology and history, culminating in the spectacular masterpiece that is "Wolfwalkers," to the more dramatic but still impactful Angelina Jolie-produced "The Breadwinner," the studio has a unique visual style and a penchant for using the medium of animation to tell stories that kids can watch without shying away from the hardships of the world.

Walt Disney Animation Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee regularly returned to the centennial of the Walt Disney Company during the studio’s massive panel devoted to the features they have coming up over the next several years. Innovation was the name of the game. With three years passing since the last time audiences were ensconced in Hall D23 both Walt Disney Animation and Pixar touted a desire to change with the times. Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter said, if anything, the pandemic forced the studio to ask “what’s our purpose” and based on the footage for both studios, there’s a desire to make that purpose great storytelling and A-list actors voicing iconic characters.

That noise you hear is the sound of Fear panicking. Or maybe it's Joy jumping up and down with glee? It could be Disgust turning her nose up as she utters, "Ugh, this better not be another 'Cars 2.'" Or maybe it's Anger yelling, "Why mess with a classic?!" It might even be Sadness quietly muttering, "Everybody knows the 'Toy Story' sequels are the only really great Pixar sequels." Honestly, it's probably all of these things at the same time.

Netflix Animation showcased a bevy of upcoming, diverse projects this week at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival: That included the unveiling of a scene from the anticipated Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio; the world premiere of Oscar winner Chris Williams’ original The Sea Beast, which premieres July 8 on the streaming service; and new footage from Henry Selick and Jordan Peele’s stop-motion Wendell & Wild.
The animation arm has been closely watched since April, when during its first-quarter earnings announcement, Netflix reported it had lost 200,000 subscribers in the quarter and expected to lose an additional 2 million during the second quarter. Since then, its animation business was affected by layoffs and several cancelled projects, such as Meghan Markle’s Pearl.
