Ten years after the invention of the “Drunk History” format, comedian Derek Waters is reconsidering how to describe the performers who get wasted, then narrate their take on a pivotal moment in history. “I want to start calling them ‘storytellers,'” he said. “It sounds more important. I think ‘narrator’ sounds like a voiceover actor.”
Indeed, the term “narrator” doesn’t quite do justice to what intoxicated celebrities bring to the series, which returned to television Tuesday night after nearly 13 months off the air.
Tuesday’s “Drunk History Christmas Special” will be followed by the show’s full return on January 23. It’s been a long time since new “Drunk History” episodes premiered, something Waters (who co-created the show with Jeremy Konner) acknowledged. “If I was a fan, I’m thinking the show’s over,” he said. “‘I thought you were dead.’ But that’s better like that than people going,...

It seemed that Lisa Nowak had all the right stuff. As a Nasa astronaut, she went into space as a mission flight engineer on July 4, 2006. She was a crew member on a 13-day Shuttle mission, operating the robotic arm for several spacewalks. A married mom of three young kids, she was also a flight officer in the United States Navy.
But on February 5, 2007, her accomplished life began to shatter.
Nowak had driven 900 miles from Houston to Orlando. In her car, she had a trench coat, black wig, pepper spray, a Bb gun, rope, trash bags, an 8-inch knife and other items.

Ten years after the storming of the Winter Palace, Sergei Eisenstein’s surreal and savage epic October reimagined Russia’s 1917 revolt – and parodied Stalin, who had commissioned it. We revisit its explosive unruliness
Coleridge said that seeing the fiery Edmund Kean act was “like reading Shakespeare by flashes of lightning”. Watching Sergei Eisenstein’s classic silent film October is like watching the Russian revolution the same way. It’s surreally lit up by stark images that sear your retina; gone the next second, to be replaced by others just as mysterious and disorientating. October is not a historical document, more a remembered dream. I sometimes wish we could see it without music, with just a deafening thunderbolt on each of its 3,200 cuts. A violent electrical storm of strangeness.
The film was commissioned in Stalin’s Soviet Russia for the 10th anniversary of the 1917 October revolution, as a suitably fervent propagandist celebration.

Ten years after their 2007 film Inside shocked audiences with its blood-soaked imagery (think pregnant women and sharp scissors), directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo bring their sick sensibilities to a major horror franchise with the Texas Chain Saw Massacre prequel Leatherface. And the newly released red-band trailer for the film, which premiered on Bloody-Disgusting earlier today, does seem to promise a visual experience as rich as a decadent French dessert—only with, um, human skin instead of butter. Yum?
Anyway, with the retro Texas setting and plentiful bloodshed, the only problem here seems to be the haunting ballad with the childlike vocals that’s become so commonplace in horror movie trailers. We’ll see if Maury and Bustillo can pull off something truly compelling so late in the Texas Chainsaw game when Leatherface premieres on DirectTV on September 21, followed by a theatrical run on October 20.

Zoe Kravitz, Ilana Glazer, Scarlett Johansson, and Jillian Bell star in Lucia Aniello’s bachelorette party comedy Rough Night, Photo by Macall Polay. Courtesy of Columbia/Sony Pictures.
Scarlett Johansson leads a cast of raucous women characters in a comedy that does more than just flip the usual bachelor party trope on its head, in Rough Night. The result is a refreshing take on buddy comedy that not only turns the tables on gender but completely nails how women really interact with each other, in a fitfully funny comedy.
Besides a strong female lead cast, Rough Night is directed by a woman, Lucia Aniello, who also co-wrote the script and is one of the producers. Unlike the typical male-written script, these female characters are spot-on and interact like real women do, even if the situation is over-the-top comedy. While the women characters and how they interact is refreshingly accurate, the humor is sometimes uneven.

When Anna Nicole Smith was found dead in a Florida hotel room in 2007, authorities recovered nearly a dozen different prescription and illicit drugs from her bedside, many of them prescribed by the hundreds. The drugs included sedatives, muscle relaxers, painkillers and sleep aids.
Investigators soon charged several people in Smith’s inner circle with felonies related to her death.
Dr. Sandeep Kapoor was a Los Angeles physician who was alleged to have prescribed Smith with methadone and Vicodin, among other drugs. In 2009, he was charged with eight felonies, including conspiring to furnish controlled substances, unlawfully prescribing a controlled substance and obtaining fraudulent prescriptions.

One of the most audacious cons in history is aided by the certainty that no one would tell a lie so obvious.
A film about an outrageous hoax, based on a true story as told in a book written by the perpetrator of said hoax. With so many layers of reality between the actual events and their onscreen translation, should we assume everything in 2007’s The Hoax is accurate?
Perhaps the more important question is: does it matter?
My feeling is that a film’s first prerogative is to entertain. In any adaptation (whether from real life or another medium of fiction) concessions will be made to the necessity of visual drama. When real life is the model, I’m less concerned with accuracy so long as the film is never presented as evidence of the real events. (In other words, JFK is great drama. You can say it’s a great movie, but...

When everyone has a gun…no one’s in control.
It’s kind of amazing to me that every film that features a gun (let alone a full stockade of guns) is not a horror movie. In 2017 alone, over four thousand human beings have been killed as a result of a firearm. When John Wick unsheathes his Glock 26 and rampages through the club popping one headshot after another, we should be fleeing to the exits rather than shoveling the next load of popcorn into our face. Have we simply built an immunity to ballistic violence? Has the trauma of the nightly news numbed our compassion, or have we reached peak saturation on tragedy. “Tonight on News 7, another horrible event we must ignore to maintain our sanity.”
Ten years after a gunman stormed the Virginia Tech campus killing 32 individuals and wounding 17 others, I found myself flinching during the trailer for Ben Wheatley’s latest film, Free Fire...

Tom Cruise is not dating his Mission: Impossible co-star, Vanessa Kirby.
A source close to Kirby tells Et that recent reports claiming the two are dating are simply "not true."

"Production hasn't even started yet," the source says, shooting down rumors that Cruise has tapped the 28-year-old actress as wife No. 4.
Kirby has landed a role in Cruise's upcoming Mission: Impossible 6, which begins filming next month in Paris -- though according to In Touch, Cruise has been a big fan of the British actress since seeing her in Netflix's The Crown.
While Et's source slammed reports that the two are dating, Cruise definitely has a history of romancing his co-stars.
The 54-year-old actor met his second wife, Nicole Kidman, on the 1990 set of their film, Days of Thunder, shortly after he divorced his first wife, actress Mimi Rogers. Ten years after Cruise...

Ten years after the cult-classic teen pregnancy film “Juno” was released, the cast is coming together again to stand up for the nonprofit reproductive health services organization Planned Parenthood. On April 8, Ellen Page and Jennifer Garner will participate in a live reading of the script. In a twist on the original, the male parts played by Michael Cera, J.K. Simmons and Jason Bateman will be read by actresses, making this an all-female cast. Director Jason Reitman was inspired to reprise his Live Read series as a response to the election of President Donald Trump. “Considering how much this and what Planned Parenthood.

Legendary director Ridley Scott’s promise that Alien: Covenant will hark back to the original Alien with more horror, more gore and more scares was welcome news for lovers of the franchise who were divided by the philosophically ambitious but much-criticized Prometheus. Due to hit screens May 19, this part two of a planned prequel quadrilogy will act as a bridge between Alien and Prometheus. Ten years after the doomed Prometheus expedition, the crew of colony ship Covenant is bound for a...

Today is Steve Irwin’s birthday. The endearing, daredevil animal lover would’ve been 55.
While Irwin’s presence and passion for sharing the wonders of wildlife are missed, he instilled the same devotion to the animal kingdom in his family, especially his children Bindi and Robert.
Both of Irwin’s kids have gone on to show that their father’s message of animal advocacy is always in their hearts with their own forays into wildlife education.
It’s hard not to think of their dad’s big smile, welcoming demeanor and fearlessness when you watch this pair interact with crocodiles,...

Ten years after Planet Earth premiered on TV (on BBC in the U.K. and on Discovery Channel in the U.S.), transforming the way audiences saw their planet, the Emmy-winning docuseries is back -- this time taking a much closer look at the habitats of the natural world. In a simulcast premiere, Planet Earth II will make its debut on AMC, BBC America and Sundance TV Saturday, Feb. 18, with the remaining episodes airing every Saturday on BBC America.
Thanks to new advances in technology (mostly in remotely operated cameras) and an interest in providing audiences with a new perspective on Earth, Planet Earth II will put audiences inside the journeys seen on-screen. “They [will be able to] empathize with the challenges that the individual animals are dealing with,” says Michael Gunton, executive producer of the new series, adding that unlike its predecessor, the show will not have a God’s-eye view of the planet. Rather, the view...

As in the past few years, the 2017 Sundance Film Festival kicked off with a sampling of six movies from the different sections, but the movie that probably had the most interest right off the bat was the premiere of An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power.
Ten years after Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth was blowing minds about global warming from its 2006 Sundance premiere to winning the Oscar, he’s back with an update that offers at least some hope for the future of the earth, but tempered with a warning that the United States could end up backtracking under the leadership of a vocal denier of climate change.
The previous movie was essentially Gore’s slide show presentation of graphs and charts showing how the build-up of carbon gases in the atmosphere has created unstable climate and weather, being responsible for the increase in the deadliest typhoons and hurricanes. At first,...

Plot: Ten years after An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore continues to fight climate change in the face of numerous political setbacks. Review: Part of the power of An Inconvenient Truth was the simplicity of the film, with Al Gore simply presenting the facts via his famous slide-show. Nothing else was really needed. He gave you the stats, scared the crap out of you, and urged the audience to get involved.... Read More...

While he’s not ageless like his onscreen persona Legolas in the Lord of the Rings franchise, Orlando Bloom’s hobbies certainly make it seem like he’s under the impression he’ll live forever.
The actor, who turns 40 on Jan. 13, has proved he knows how to turn any day into an adventure since opening his Instagram account to the public last year. Motocross racing, cliff jumping and motorcycling through India are just a few ways Bloom is still getting his adrenaline fix.
Bloom also recently paid tribute to the 15th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, posting a series of photos of him preparing for his role taken during the New Zealand production. There was archery, helicopter rides and catching some waves when the cameras weren’t rolling.
The actor talked about the cast’s time at the beach when he sat down with Et in 2001, where he explained the reasoning...

Ten years after launching a school in South Africa, Oprah Winfrey is reuniting with her first students to see how far they've come. The emotional reunion takes place in Fusion's upcoming documentary O Girls, in which Oprah looks back on the opening of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. "My work with these girls feels as natural to me as if they were my own children," the former talk show host shared during the interview. "For me, this is what mothering was meant to be." O Girls will also document the lives of five of the girls from the original class, some of whom are set to graduate college. Probably one of the least known works of Yonfan, “Immortal Story” is a film that exemplifies love and its complexity, as much as Macao.
Mei Ling is an orphan girl with a great voice living in Macao, who depends on her aunt to make decisions for her. Her only friend is a kid named Le Wen Chi, who seems to idolize her, but also has a tendency for stealing. Eventually he finds a wallet and they decide to return it to Chung Chuen, a rich foreigner who is staying in the place with some colleagues. When Chung visits the restaurant Mei Ling is performing, he falls in love with her and the feeling is mutual. However, he eventually has to leave, and Mei Ling, despite having his address, decides not to ever write him, wary of the difference in social status.
After some years, she meets Pak Lan, an owner...
