Exclusive: Gunpowder & Sky’s sci-fi arm Dust has teamed with Sylvester Stallone and Braden Aftergood’s Balboa Productions to develop the sci-fi sports drama series Meshed based on the short story by the same name by Rich Larson. Edward Ricourt is on board to adapt.
Set in the not-so-distant future, Meshed is centered around a technology — appropriately called Mesh — which allows for an immersive experience of professional basketball through the eyes of its athletes. Mesh enhances the game for viewers while commoditizing the lives of its players. The show will explore the intersection of sports, sponsorship, friendship, global entertainment and winning at all costs.
“Rich Larson’s visionary short story sits at the cross-section of two very prescient ideas: the role of technology in enhancing athletic achievement, and the increasingly immersive world of spectator sport,” said Aftergood. “Sylvester Stallone and I are honored to...

Jay Z celebrated his 47th birthday in style on Saturday at a star-studded bash in Los Angeles, with details and the guest-list kept strictly on the down-low.
The secrecy seems to have worked as neither Jay Z nor his superstar wife, Beyoncé, were seen arriving or leaving the super exclusive event, which was held at the swank Republique restaurant.
Watch: Beyonce Debuts Holiday Merch So Fans Can 'Sleigh All Day'
The upscale eatery was covered in tarps on the outside to grant ultimate privacy for the party-goers inside, who included Beyoncé’s mom, Tina Lawson, and her husband, Richard Larson, as well as Bey's Destiny's Child bandmate, Kelly Rowland, and her husband, Tim Witherspoon.
Mama Tina looked ready to party in a camo jacket with black leather sleeves, which she paired with leather pants and leather boots. Kelly looked chic and sleek in a silver trench coat and gray fedora.

R Kurt Osenlund gives Gary Ross's The Hunger Games three out of four stars, which is a fairly solid endorsement, coming from Slant. That's nice and all, but The Hunger Games as a film is really only half the story. The other half has to do with marketing and the impact the film will have on the industry, aspects of a movie we don't usually pay all that much attention to around here, but in this case, they cannot be ignored.
According to Bloomberg's Michael White, when it opens on Friday, The Hunger Games may pull in between $115 million and $270 million during the first three days of its run. "It will also transform Lions Gate, an independent filmmaker known for horror movies, Tyler Perry comedies and a long takeover fight with Carl Icahn. With The Hunger Games, Twilight and two more projects with sequel potential, Vancouver-based Lions Gate has...

Platinum Studios, Inc. and Practical Pictures ("American Pie") report they will team to develop writer Bob Keenan's 2008 one-shot, graphic novel "Alien At Large", illustrated by Rich Larson, as a feature film :
"...'Alien At Large' tells the story of Earth's first interstellar ambassador, 'Boxavo Tan', who is not the brightest star in the galaxy. "Denis Villeneuve's Incendies — an operatic saga of intergenerational woe — is the cinematic equivalent of a Harlem Globetrotters game, with brazen contrivances and a preordained outcome repurposed as dazzling spectacle." David Ehrlich at Reverse Shot: "A strained melodrama that unspools like the bastard child of Homer and Alejandro González Iñárritu, Incendies devotes the brunt of its 130 minutes to earning the audacity of its resolution — it's a work of such unchecked ambition that it almost has to be excused before it can be appreciated at all. But if Villeneuve's film ultimately resolves itself as little more than a gaudy parlor trick, it's an expertly executed bit of chicanery whose punchline hits you square in the gut."
"It's a dual story," explains New York's David Edelstein, "of French-Canadian brother-and-sister twins compelled by the will of their dead mother to locate a father they thought died decades earlier and a brother they never knew existed; and,...

Critics are calling this Twilight rip-off a Twilight rip-off.
"A flashy, lunkheaded sci-fi extravaganza sure to appeal to teenagers who like their interplanetary warfare bloodless and their high-school soaps squeaky-clean."
— Justin Chang, Variety
"...has more than a whiff of number two about it, but this bombastic combination of Twilight romance and Transformers destruction and decibel levels may very well connect with its target PG-13 audience."
— Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune
"...a franchise constructed almost scientifically from the ground up, a slick conglomeration of other popular successes which should totally work in theory (equal parts X-Men, Transformers, and Twilight), but just as Frankenstein discovered about his monster, the beast we're left with after fusing these various ingredients together has inherited no soul at all."
— Richard Larson, Slant Magazine
"...shameless and unnecessary."
— Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
"...nothing but a million little pieces from prior superhero series and the Twilight saga."
— Nick Schager, Village...
