Ryan Laney loves using technology to support storytelling. He is a visual effects supervisor at Teus Media and has recently become known for his innovative use of machine learning techniques that protect witnesses in documentary films.
Digital veiling he developed and produced for the documentary Welcome To Chechnya earned the film a Visual Effects Society Nomination for Supporting Visual Effects and a spot on the Oscars' VFX Shortlist, the first documentary to do so.
Ryan has had a distinguished career in the film industry. He has worked with outstanding visual effects teams at Manex Entertainment, Industrial Light and Magic, Digital Domain, and Sony Pictures Imageworks, and has contributed to the technical development of groundbreaking effects for numerous summer blockbusters like "Spider-Man 3" and "Ant-Man," and has supported many more story-driven projects like "The Aviator" and "Hidalgo."
In 2018, he developed a novel technique to protect documentary subjects for "Welcome to Chechnya." The approach safeguards identities while maintaining the authenticity of the testimony, and the integrity of the contributors' emotions. In 2023, he was honored with a technical achievement Oscar commendation for this digital veiling technology.
Working with human rights groups and doc filmmakers, he continues efforts to improve digital veiling processes, to make identity protecting tools available wherever needed, and, by extension, helping filmmakers and their contributors tell their stories.
