Overtake! is a sports anime about F4 racing. Money and sponsorships determine the outcome as much as skill. The protagonist Haruka Asahina is a young driver allied with the independent “privateer” team Komaki Motors. All it takes is a bad tire for Haruka to lose a race. His rivals, Satsuki Harunaga and Toshiki Tokumaru, belong to the larger and wealthier team Belsorriso. They win even on their worst days. The stage is set for an underdog story, where a young boy comes from nowhere to beat the establishment at their own game. Related: Overtake! Is a Great Way to Get Into Formula Racing Certainly the climax of the series sees Haruka and Komaki Motors challenge Belsorriso’s dominance of the track. But Overtake! has a lot more on its mind than just Haruka’s story of perseverance. The series spends just as much time with Satsuki and Toshiki of Belsorriso.

An unsung master of movie magic, Solon Luigi Colani has worked on some of the biggest Hollywood movies ever shot in Germany and beyond, among them works by Quentin Tarantino, Ron Howard, George Clooney, Denis Villeneuve, Paul W.S. Anderson, Gore Verbinski and the Wachowskis.
His enormous range of practical visual effects have also become regular fixtures in Germany’s domestic film and TV industry, where he has helped filmmakers and showrunners bring their visions to life.
In Matthias Glasner’s current Berlinale Competition screener “Dying,” for example, he created a pneumatic pump, hose system and the necessary chunky liquid for a dramatic scene in which a character falls ill at the Berlin Philharmonic concert hall.
Colani established his Berlin-based company Pyro Labs in the 1990s as a side business while working as a young It specialist. Initially focused on firework displays for weddings, birthday parties and other live events, the...

You would expect fireworks from a racing film based on true events that has Daniel Brühl in the cast, right? Sure, every single film is different, but expecting good things from Race for Glory: Audi vs. Lancia is understandable enough, with a very compelling story of David triumphing over Goliath and, of course, Brühl’s association with it. Given the actor’s most popular role till date is playing the legendary Austrian F1 driver Niki Lauda in Ron Howard’s Rush, easily one of the greatest racing films ever made.
Sadly though, Brühl is pretty much wasted in Race for Glory: Audi vs. Lancia, where he bats for the Goliaths by playing Ronald Gumpert, the engineer and manager of the Audi racing team who revolutionized sports car-making by inventing four-wheel-drive vehicles. As big as Gumpert was in real life, his role in this film is pretty much that of a minor supporting character.

After the release of Neill Blomkamp’s Gran Turismo, it feels like the perfect time to reflect on Ron Howard’s biographical racing drama, Rush, starring Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Brühl, and Olivia Wilde. The 2013 film focuses on the 1976 motor-racing season and the rivalry between Briton James Hunt and the Austrian Niki Lauda. Like most biographical dramas, Howard dramatizes Rush’s plot points for the audience, including Hunt and Lauda’s rivalry and Lauda’s wife’s reaction to his injuries.
Other story elements were invented for the film, such as altercations off the race track and details about who participated in what race and the results of their efforts. While it’s typical for a biographical film to blur fact from fiction to create a more compelling narrative, Rush takes several liberties with Hunt and Lauda’s story despite the duo being friends early in their careers.

The Walkmen were the musical guests on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Wednesday night, marking their first live performance since 2014. Instead of debuting new music, however, the rock band performed their 2004 classic “The Rat.”
Personally, if we were scheduling our first concert in nearly a decade, we would not want to do it on television! But The Walkmen, who have a handful of proper reunion shows coming up, made their time away feel insignificant, especially considering it was barely over a month ago when guitarist Paul Maroon tweeted that “The Rat” was “extremely fast and currently [he] cannot play it.”
All of The Walkmen must’ve really hunkered down and practiced. “The Rat” went off without a hitch on Colbert, with the band playing the breakneck rocker pretty dang close to the studio version’s tempo. All the members looked a little bit overwhelmed, but also stoked to be back; most importantly,...

George Harrison wrote his 1979 song, “Blow Away” after not writing a single tune throughout 1977. He had some demons to work out, and thankfully he emerged from it all with a great song.

During a 1979 interview with Rolling Stone, George revealed that he didn’t pick up his guitar or write a song once throughout 1977. He didn’t miss it, either.
There were a couple of reasons for George’s hiatus. He told Rolling Stone that around that time, he hated that when he was doing other things or going on vacation, he’d have to return to his work just as he was starting to enjoy himself. George had begun to think of music as a job, which he hated.

Daniel Brühl will always stop for a photo with a fan. What he is recognised for largely depends on where in the world he is at the time. If he is in Italy, chances are people know him for playing Formula One ace Niki Lauda in Rush. In Germany, he is still approached by admirers of his early indie drama Good Bye Lenin! and outside Europe it will almost always be for Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. Whichever role it is, the 44-year-old Brühl is happy to oblige. Other actors ask how he remains so patient. “I’ve always had this urge to be liked,” he confesses bashfully. “Even up until now.”
It’s funny because over the past two decades, the Spanish-German actor has cultivated a reputation for the opposite. On screen, he is often found scowling, if not moustache-twirling. First, there was his star-making turn as Tarantino’s unctuous,...

For a new adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front, the actor faced a dual responsibility – to portray a forgotten German hero, and deliver a warning from history
When he first glanced at the script for a new adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s 1928 novel All Quiet on the Western Front, Daniel Brühl was immediately hooked. “When I was growing up, this was one of the most important books we read. I think almost all of us read it at school and it so impressed us. When I was older I felt I had to read it again.” So, almost 100 years after it was published, being able to adapt it cinematically in its original language for the first time was something Brühl was “immediately intrigued by”.
The German-Spanish actor is best known for his roles in Good Bye, Lenin! (2003), Inglourious Basterds (2009) and Rush (2013), where he played the late Formula One great Niki Lauda.

For as often as he directs vanilla Oscar bait and "hooey" Robert Langdon movies, Ron Howard sometimes pulls out a film like "Rush" and reminds us he's capable of making genuinely exciting pictures. “We’re all used to stunt movies. But to really keep your main character and his emotions as the center of the story, that’s what keeps the audience connected. If it’s just action, you tune out. Could Julian Day be the unofficial go-to costume designer for movies about icons? With films such as “Control” (Joy Division), “Nowhere Boy” (John Lennon), “Rush”, “Diana” (Princess Di) and “Bohemian

Nikolaus “Niki” Lauda, the Austrian Formula One racing legend whose rivalry with British driver James Hunt during the 1970s inspired the Ron Howard film “Rush,” died Monday from undisclosed causes. He was 70.
“His unique successes as a sportsman and entrepreneur are and remain unforgettable,'” Lauda’s family said in a statement. “His tireless drive, his straightforwardness and his courage remain an example and standard for us all. Away from the public gaze he was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. We will miss him very much.”
Born in 1949, Lauda entered a racing career despite the disapproval of his family. His determination to succeed as a racer was such that in 1971, finding his career stalled, Lauda took out a £30,000 bank loan to buy his way into a team. Sometimes it feels like Ron Howard has been around forever. Although the actor/director is in his 60’s, he’s been a star in TV and movies for over 55 years. From his early days playing Andy Griffith‘s son Opie on “The Andy Griffith Show” to his directing of the latest “Star Wars” story, “Solo,” the unassuming Howard still finds himself the center of attention.
Now primarily known as a director, Howard has won two Academy Awards — for producing and directing 2001’s Best Picture winner “A Beautiful Mind” starring Russell Crowe — and has two more nominations to his credit for producing and directing 2008 nominee “Frost/Nixon” starring Michael Sheen and Frank Langella.
With “Solo” in theaters, let’s take a photo gallery tour of his 15 greatest feature films, ranked from worst to best. Keep in mind that our gallery strictly focuses on his directing career and leaves out his terrific work as an actor in movies.

The Northern Irish politicians make an intriguing cinematic pairing, but there are even more fiery duos that film could fictionalise
Nick Hamm’s new film The Journey tells of the decades-long enmity, followed by the highly surprising friendship, between Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness as they laboured towards the Anglo-Irish agreement. It slots neatly into a favourite mini-genre of mine, mostly cornered by screenwriter Peter Morgan, who has made half a career of creating dramatic face-offs between real-life figures with diametrically opposed worldviews: Lord Longford and Myra Hindley (Longford); Brian Clough and Don Revie (The Damned United) and James Hunt and Niki Lauda (Rush). Other film-makers have taken up the format, too, in My Week With Marilyn, The King’s Speech and now The Journey.

Among the many horror stories that sprung from WWII, one of the lesser-known, at least in terms of popular culture, is the pillaging of the Warsaw Zoo, which the Germans bombarded so that they could steal what they considered the most valuable animals. The operation was led by zoologist Lutz Heck, who intended to use the animals to bring back to life species that had long been extinct. In Niki Caro’s The Zookeeper’s Wife, Heck is played by Daniel Brühl, who begins as a noble scientist who seems interested in helping zookeepers Jan (Johan Heldenbergh) and his wife Antonina (Jessica Chastain) with their preservation mission, but slowly reveals his true colors, for his obsession with science only helps reveal his lack of empathy and humanity.

The pragmatic Austrian who went to hell and back offers some candid testimony but the post-crash story is played too straight
That “untold” snipes at Ron Howard’s Rush, where Niki Lauda was deployed as an uptight yardstick against which James Hunt’s roistering could be more efficiently dramatised.
This studious documentary profile – Austrian-assembled, despite its overblown American voiceover – benefits from the candid testimony of a driver who went to hell and back while displaying a supremely Teutonic matter-of-factness: on being offered the last rites in the wake of that 1976 inferno, Lauda recalls “my pragmatic thinking was that it couldn’t do any harm”.

Exclusive: Who owns history? In the run-up to the Oscars, the critiques playing out in the press over the “accuracy” of events portrayed in Selma, American Sniper and The Imitation Game have never had a more powerful purchase on the public conversation.
Few contemporary writers have tangled with the issue as consistently — and entertainingly — as two-time Oscar nominee Peter Morgan. He might recreate the days-long encounter between a British interlocutor and a paranoid U.S. President, as he did first onstage and then in film with Frost/Nixon. Slice through the emotional tensions in a legendary Formula One racing rivalry, as he did in Rush. Or imagine the private conversations between the Queen of England and a succession of Prime Ministers, as he does in The Audience, the hit West End play starring Helen Mirren that is in rehearsal for its upcoming Broadway bow.

Every year there's plenty of performances that never get the recognition they deserve from the Academy Awards. And that's certainly true of Daniel Brühl, who gave one of the finest performances of 2013 as F1 race car driver Niki Lauda in Rush. But, despite movies like Inglourious Basterds and The Fifth Estate, Brühl hasn't just been overlooked by the Academy, he's been overlooked by American audiences in general. That's definitely about to change, though, because Brühl has just been cast as the villain in Captain America: Civil War. We don't know precisely who Brühl will be playing in the film, which brings back The Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo, we just know he'll be causing a spot...

As a musician my greatest fear always is not knowing where the music comes from. I'm always afraid that somebody's going to turn off the tap.
Right now there's no composer in Hollywood who's more in-demand than Hans Zimmer. His rousing scores can be heard in everything from dramas 12 Years a Slave and Rush to blockbuster epics such as The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy.

It's easy - I don't think Steve McQueen understands the word no. That's the flippant way of saying it.

Here we are again after the Golden Globes, Mike Fleming and Anita Busch taking on the task of play by play during the most wide-open Oscar race we can remember. Even on the party circuit, industry insiders who usually have a grasp of who’ll walk away with Oscars were evenly torn between Alfonso Cuaron’s 3D masterpiece Gravity and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave. Then again, there were so many terrific films that got Best Picture nominations, and all of them have at least a puncher’s chance at an upset. Related: Oscars: Pete Hammond’s Absolute Final Predictions That includes American Hustle, where David O Russell co-wrote the Best Original Script nominee with Eric Warren Singer and got tour de force performances and nominations for Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Perfs so strong there was no room on the nomination roster for perennial Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner.

3D space disaster movie wins six awards at Royal Opera House, including best director and best British film
It was a contest between two wildly different films – a 3D space disaster movie and an unflinching portrayal of 19th-century American slavery – and on paper it was the former, Gravity, which emerged as the biggest winner at the 2014 Bafta ceremony.
It won six awards, including best director and best British film. But 12 Years a Slave unquestionably picked up the biggest prize, best film, with Chiwetel Ejiofor named as best actor.
In a year when no one film swept the board, American Hustle also came away with three prizes.
Alfonso Cuarón was named best director and said you would not know it from his accent but he considered himself a part of the British film industry. He has lived in London for 13 years and joked: "I make a very good case for curbing immigration.
